Hope you'll like those, (most likely you will). I think you'll see the progress I made between Dijon (my first picture session here) and Budapest (the last).

Dijon

Dijon was once the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy (this is where it is tricky, there was a Duchy of Burgundy as a part of France, and a Kingdom of Burgundy at the same time with Cluny for capital).

Unlike I've seen it on many forum, most building aren't gothic or baroque. The main architectural style is Romanesque. But not pure Romanesque, it's mixed up with younger methods of building that came from the gothic and baroque style, true. It's the birthplace of Gustave Eiffel, and also a strong production place for wines, mustards and various liquors. Ginger bread from Dijon is also famous.

The most important building there is the Palais des Etats de Bourgognes (Palace of States of Burgundy), wich is the actual name. The old name was the Palais des ducs (Palace of the Dukes). It was built by the Dukes of Burgundy as their residential place. It also because the administrative place of the region of Burgundy. The dukes of Burgundy, even if they were vassals of the French kings betrayed France during the hundred years' war and lost. The dukes lost all their power and became totaly assimilated by France.

http://premium.uploadit.org/LeChacal/Palais_des_Etats_de_Bourgogne13.JPG

In front of the palace, you can see the Place d'Armes (Square of the Weapons). Ii was built in the form of half a circle. Because the Dukes were disgusted at the poverty of the city (they ruined it themself, let it be clear)and wanted to see only the richs in from of their palace.

http://premium.uploadit.org/LeChacal/Place_dArmes01.jpg

The Abbey, Sainte Begnine, is also an important landmarks. It's the necropolis of the last Duke of Burgundy.

Saint Michel could be a simple church. But it's one of the most beautyfull of Dijon (if not the most beautyfull). The Dukes of Burgundy were crazy at churchs and built a lot of them. Maybe the highest concentration of churchs of France. At the expense of the average citizen of Burgundy.

The Cathedral of Dijon is Notre Dame (Our Lady), it's a nice one, but not the best. It's one of those mixed style churchs. The particularity of this churchs, is it has a small (not very damaged) statue of a howl on its side. It was the symbol of luck in the former celtic belief of Gaul. And many people just come from all the city to touch it to get luck. Before exams or others.

Saint Phillibert is one more Romanesque mixed church built right next of Sainte Begnine. Talking about church density.

Saint Jean just a few steps away. I don't have a clear picture of his bell tower. But you can see it in one pics of Sainte Begnine.

The Marché Eiffel (Eiffel Market), is the marketplace. It was designed by Eiffel.

http://premium.uploadit.org/LeChacal/Marche_Eiffel01.jpg

The Hotel de Vogue is a former private hotel (in a long time ago, it just meant a big house). Now it's an administrative building. Here you can see the backside of the entrace arch. With a lot of trash.

And pics from various place of the city itself. With minor square. You'll see also the colored roof. Typical of the Burgundian architecture and make you believe you're in Austria.

Biarritz

Still in France, but now in Euskal Herria (Basque Country). As you can see, there is the ocean there. So I didn't took pictures all the time. Yet, a day, the weatehr was grey so I took pictures. And the last night, I was drunk but I managed to take some night shot.

The Côte des Basques (Basques' coast) is a beach where I often go. The other one is the Grande Plages, but I only have it in night shot.

Here are the night shots, they aren't that good. But I wasn't in full condition. You can see the Grande Plage (Great Beach), with the Casino behind it. And in the distance is the Hotel Royal du Palais, wich was a palace built by the royal family of France and converted in an hotel. It has its own church in front of it and the lighthouse in behind it.

Tarbes is an ordinary town. In the southwest France. It's at the feet of the mountains. But when it comes to architecture it's not a wonder. It's the birthplace of the Maréchal Foch and is the military industrial town of France. It's also the place where one of the two fencing schools of France is (the other is in Paris), and also where the equitation national school is. I lived there for 14 years. In high school, in math class, I had the world 5th best in fencing at my left, and the world 12th best at my right.

The Jardin Massey is the public park. It was almost entirely destroyed during the great storm of 1999.

Lourdes

Lourdes is a small town. In the southwest France. Even smaller than Tarbes. It has only 13.000 residents. But the tourism is hell active here. In 2000, 5.000.000 of tourists came. The city itself only has 2 real landmarks. The main reason of tourism is the catholic pilgrimage. Lourdes is a holy place where miracle are supposed to happen. I lived there for 1 year, but it's not possible. The huge tourism kills every possible life.

The Basilique Notre Dame du Rosaire is built on the holy place itself. It has nothing really special and it rather modern. You can see the big esplanade in front of it. And the two ramps on its side.

Now it is Toulouse

It is the city where I was born, and where I'll work (very soon). It was the capital of many fallen kingdom and one of the wealthiest city of Europe for age. It's also in competition with Marseille for the status of oldest French city (Toulouse would have been founded in nearly the 9th century BC). I was first a city state, even in the Roman empire (traditional alliance with Rome), then the capital of the Visigoths' Empire, then of the Kingdom of Aquitaine and finally of the County of Toulouse.

The main landmarks is the Capitole or Capitolium. The building was a ruin in the 18th century. And was entirely rebuilt at the moment. The original date of construction is now lost, but possibly the 9th century. It has two square on each sides. The one in front of it has the Arcades in front of it and the Zodiakal cross, symbol of the city and much more. The part behind it has the keep, wich is now the tourism office. The building itself is now used for minor administrative stuff, wedding, and it's also the operahouse.

The Basilique Saint Sernin is the biggest pure Romanesque church. It was build in the 11th century. It's named after Saint Saturninus who christianised the city and was martyred in. Under the Albigensian crusade who opposed the North to the South of France, Simon de Montfort (there are many Simon de Montfort) died almost at its gate during the siege. And it was the siege of the Inquisition in France. It also has the largest collection of relic in France.

What an interesting thread!!

Many questions are springing up in my mind. But I will just ask you just two questions.

First of all, could you please give me some more detailed info about the city of Dijon? Things like population, area, main industry, and so forth.

And can you give me some history about the Duke of Brugundy? From the beginning to the end of the state. I appreciate in advance.

For the city of Dijon, the metroarea's population is about 240.000 people.
Dijon main source of income is wine and mustard. Wich generate a lot of profits, about industry, it's a normal city. But it never been the main goal of the city and so, unlike many city of north France it doesn't suffer their economic crisis.

The is the region of Bourgogne, wich match the former Dukedom.

This map show you the Kingdom of Burgundy

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/earlyblazon/images/carte/empire/bourgogne.jpg

The Duke of Burgundy were never more powerfull than the kings of France. Just because they had to use vassals to rule over their lands, like the kings of France. For example the Duchy of Burgundy controlled the County of Flanders. But I would rather say they were supposed to obey the Dukes of Burgundy. Just like the Dukes of Burgundy were supposed to obey the Kings of France.

So it's hard to define, but during the 100 years' war yes they controled a lot of territories when the Kings of England purchased their help. But when it began to turn wrong for England, they betrayed England for France.

Auch

Auch is a small town, historic capital of Gascony. The main thing to see there is the cathedral. The city was rather rich at the moment. This is why the inside of the cathedral is so nice.

It's a gothic church, but the interior has been modified several times. And include some baroque elements in (that's how it works here, we didn't build Baroque church because we already had church when the style was introduced but we modified the interiors).

It has a lot of gold inside it and the wood there is of extreme quality. Before being sculpted it stay in the river there (the Gers, it's also the name of the department) one full year. Then Auch afforded the best northern italian artists (wich I can't name but they were famous in their time) to work it.

This is why on some pictures, you have the impression to have gold over the wood. But in fact there is no gold on the wood (but there are tons everywhere else in) it's just light reflecting on the wood.

So here is the Cathedral, Sainte Marie

Luz Saint Sauveur

Luz Saint Sauveur is really a tiny village. Unsignicant on a map. And very hard to find. It's 20 km after Lourdes but the road is a pain. In 45min to do it and just a long succession of green mountainous canyons. The village is entirely surrounded on mountains and is far from everything.

So the question is, why would someone goes there? Well, there is a church, a fortified one. It is say it was built by the Templars there. The style of the church itself is hard to define. As you see, it's a fortified one, and the inside was modified several time as you can see, just like for Sainte Marie of Auch, details that are baroque and gothics. It was built around 800BC and was modified a lot of time too. For example, you can see a paint of a man holding a triangle, the triangle itself symbolise the holy trinity, but the man has 3 faces. It's what we name an "Anamorphosée" here, depending or you angle and distance of view you can see one or three faces. The angels also have a typical baroroque design, they are winged heards without body, in the classical architecture they have a doby and an undertemined gender.

Saint Bertrand de Comminges

Even smaller than Luz Saint Sauveur, this village is easily accessible. It's in a valley but the road is much better. This village has also an interesting church. First a roman fort (there are still some roman ruins at the foot of the hill) and has 2000 years of history (but the church isn't that old). Like Auch and Luz Saint Sauveur, it's a church that has been modified way a lot of time.

You can see the cathedral, named Sainte Marie again.

Barcelona

We're leaving France for a while. And going in Spain. But not too far, Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. It's the home of Gaudi, great architect. And has a rather diversified architecture. I stayed only one afternoon there but I tried to be as quick as possible (and I've been very fast). Couldn't take all I wanted to take.

First the Catalonia Square

Tripping in the gothic area. Sadly the Cathedral of Barcelona was in renovation and it was full of pilgrims anyway. You'll notice at least that jesus appeared in front of it. I also took some pictures of the king's square.

Also in Spain it's the capital of Aragon. The most important building there is the Basilica. A pure Baroque one. I would say the city is a one day trip. I also took the swatiska I've seen there.

The basilica del pillar. Some people say it's the most beautyfull church of Spain. I can believe it.

Prague

Now eastern Europe. This is Prague now. The Czech Republic.

stayed 5 days in Prague and so took a lot of pictures. I'll let you enjoy them. Many pictures are dark or taken looking at the sun, that's because I had to wake up early to avoid the huge tourists flow (insane). But in the other hand it gives some kind of dark image of the city.

The castle, it's a nice one but not my prefered. There is the cathedral, Saint Vitus, inside it's wall.

The Cathedral, Saint Vitus. The inside is very nice but like 80% of the building of Prague, no pictures allowed.

Budapest

This is where your computer might crash because mine what close (and it's a monster I've built myself).

After Prague, here is the second part of my eastern europe trip. Enjoy Budapest. One of my prefered city so far.

One of the most important stuff in Budapest is the Buda Castle. With a museum inside it and a nice view over the city.

Ok, last post I'll do here. I'll merge others in one because I don't want to reload this page at each of my post. Last one.

The Pyrenees

Here we go for some breathtaking pictures. Mainly landscapes. Unless it's specified, it's the French part. It is where I live.

Here is the Valle de Aran in Spain. It's the Spanish side but it's the Spanish Occitania (wich is tiny, yet due to this, they have their own council). Unlike the French side, peoples from there are still speaking the old Occitan language (I don't speak it).

My house, or rather my mother's house where I am sometime. It's still not finished, the trees are ours and the (tiny) river pass on our land. The cross is the basque cross, not the nazi cross. The mower lawn wasn't working at the moment (fixed now).

Kyenan, BTW you can ask everything you want. I'll answer in the limits of my knowledge. Yet, it better has to be about the southwest France than the North, since it's my domain of history and way of living.

Ellatur, wish I could go to Korea one day. I'll try in the future.

Let me guess, you're Korean?

BTW,are there many Koreans living in France?

For the Korean communauty in France. There is a small one, but clearly not a big one, and most of them are orphans (from the war or later) who were adopted (and so had no contact at all with the Korean society, at least those I know).

When talking about asian communauties, the two very important communauties from asia are from China and Indochina (and mainly Vietnamese). Because the Vietnamese spoke the French language and came to flee the Vietnam war and the communist government. Chinese, well I don't know why, but there are a lot of Chinese in France.

So if you look in France, you'll find some Koreans (but most of the time, the asian you'll see won't be Koreans) and the Koreans you'll see won't speak Korean at all (quiet the majority, in the contrary of Vietnamese and Chinese who often speak their original languages).

I'd love to visit France,especially Nice,Cannes & Monte Carlo but i don't think i'll have a blast cuz i don't know a single word in French.

Well, technicaly talking Monte Carlo isn't a part of France. About the language, yes it's an issue. Because a lot of French don't speak English (they aren't interested, the French language is often enough). But on the azure coast, you'll find some English tourists and others (like Dutch or German) who'll speak English.

If I would give you an advice, I would recommand the Atlantic coast more than the mediteranean sea. People are often younger there. And the landscape are much more preserved. For the sun, the mediteranean coast has more sun and less wind, that's clear. Atlantic coast is a big colder, but there are a lot of waves (but gotta be extra carefull). I live between the two and I really prefer the atlantic side.

Guess i'll have to learn some French then. What about Paris,do people there speak english more often since it's the capital?

Matthieu

Paris doesn't speak a better English than the "provinces" could be even the opposite. Restaurants there speak English without a doubt, same with shops. And Parisian aren't very welcoming (too many tourists).

I wouldn't recommand to try to learn French unless you really want to learn it. It has the reputation to be complicated and its a deserved one.

Just curious,if the Chinese & Vietnamese don't speak French, then how do they get by in France.

Are there many Korean restaurants in France. Is Asian food popular over there?

The Vietnamese who came in France often spoke French. They were polical refugees who fled the communist government and those were closer from France than other asians, now the main immigration is Chinese. But it's harder for them because of the language mainly. Well, you can come in France if you don't speak French and you can apply. There is no law against that but the problem is every official documents are in French. So better learn it. I don't know how they do, but they often learn French here I think. For Chinese applying is hard because of this problem and they can stay as illegal immigrants for years (it happens) who can't get send back to China because of the children (laws are very protectives to illegal immigrants with children in France).
