EU satisfied with Turkish reforms http://www.wowturkey.com/forum/images/smiles/china.gif

The European Union enlargement chief has voiced satisfaction with Turkey's reforms as Ankara presses for formal negotiations on its EU membership bid.

Enlargement Commissioner Guenter Verheugen said there were "no more obstacles" for Turkey on its path towards opening accession talks.

He was speaking in Brussels after talks with the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey's delay in adopting a new penal code earlier troubled EU officials.

But the Turkish parliament has now decided to reconvene on Sunday to discuss the controversial penal reform code.

A row over a clause to outlaw adultery - part of the reform package - complicated Turkey's diplomatic push to open EU accession talks.

Mr Erdogan is reported to have told EU officials that the code would not include the controversial adultery law.

Mr Verheugen told reporters after his meeting with Mr Erdogan that "we have been able to find solutions for the remaining outstanding problems".

A report by the commission due on 6 October will say whether Brussels believes talks on the Turkish bid should go ahead.

"From my point of view there are no further conditions which Turkey must fulfil in order to allow the commission to make a recommendation," Mr Verheugen said.

Delays

The Turkish government was earlier frustrated that the commission was making such heavy weather about the package of legal reforms, the BBC's Tim Franks in Brussels reports.

But equally, officials at the commission have said it is very worrying that Mr Erdogan appears not to be in control of his own Islamist MPs.

Earlier, Mr Verheugen's spokesman Jean-Christophe Filori said "we would like to know what will happen now in Turkey... at what speed the reform process... will go forward".

Mr Erdogan's government last week withdrew the legal code bill from parliament, as a result of pressure from hardline Muslim groups who want to make adultery illegal.

The bill had also proposed the strengthening of freedom of expression, women's rights and increased the penalties for torture and rape.

Turkey has been an EU candidate since 1999.

The final decision on whether to start full membership talks rests with the leaders of the EU member states, who are due to make up their minds in December.

I think it's Pakistanbul or Afghanistabul rather than Istan York or Sao Istanbulo. Just kidding:)

It's not only Istan York and Sao Istanbulo, but also Paristanbul, Istandon, Istankyo, Istong Kong and Istanghai. Maybe it's a combination of all.

Très bien fait! Félicitations aux Istanbulais!

I don't believe that Athens is such a mess but Istanblue has all the ingredients to be a metropolis. And, skyscrapers point to this direction... Istanbul has what I like about Athens recently: the capacity to take long rides on highways and go around, from the Golden horn to Levent and see the changes in landscapes. Also, Levent and Maslak are notable for the fact that they give this impression of "city within a city" that we start feeling in Athens with Maroussi, the Olympic complex and the new multi-entertainment centres under construction in this area. But Istanblue, yes, it rocks. Give me a good camera , Asim and Kerem to go for a ride with the car on a sunny Saturday morning to take pictures and go for a coffee in Metrocity (or even by the sea in Ortakoy, it looks just fine).

Lovely city!!!

Gregory's ancestors are Constanti-noble Greeks by the way, which explains his noble character. :okay:
