They came over to Canada in the early 1900s in the time when there was lots of immigration from eastern europe(ukraine especially-out of all eastern european nationalities ukrainian is the most prevalent in canada). lol, I know it's huge. The area is vague but it's something around the border where Buffalo city on American side is and Niagara Falls Canadian city on the other side. The Ontario province and NY state. But all my other relatives remained in Ukraine. I also trace my family tree to 1700's btw. I know one of my relatives name was Barvinok-Dudka (my last name is Barvinok now ) and he was a Cossack commander of a regiment or something of that sort. Actually I have relatives from all parts of Ukraine, the westernmost Carpathians and Easternmost Kuban' (Russia today, where Cossacks moved to). But mainly from Kyiv itself, possibly for the past 200 years my family lived in Kyiv.

Since you mentioned some of your family lived in the Austrian Empire ... I though it might well be Lviv, since the Ukrainian part that belonged to Austria was around the Lviv area.

Glad to know that you cherish your roots, Nate. I met many people in uni which have even more recent Ukrainian ties, and don't know much (or care) about their background. I was kind of disappointed, it's sad really. Glad to know it's not everyone!

So if Russian person would start speaking Russian to Ukrainian speaking person, the latter will reply in Russian. Also a lot of people are russified and speak Russian anyway. As well as Crimea, where Russians makes up 80% of population or something like that.

I'm actually really good at telling what nationality people are just by looking at them. I don't know why, it's just instinctual, but most of the time, I just need to look at a person, and I can mostly tell what country they're from, or at the very least the area.

Anyway, it really doesn't matter if people think I look Canadian, as I said before, it's probably just the picture. All that matters is that I know who I am. :)

It's Bienvenue AU Canada. "Du" is often used to say "of". So you said "Welcome of Canada". Yes, it turns to another french lesson on the EE forums. ;)
