View Full Version : Why I知 starting to really hate San Antonio
Carolina Blue May 2nd, 2011, 10:38 PM I知 sure everybody remembers when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the kind people of San Antonio said to the city, 添ou have our sympathy and support, and while we池e at it, we値l just take that NFL team off your hands now賠SMDH...
After nearly a week's worth of hate mail, mostly from Gulf Coast residents outraged over the possible loss of their favorite team, Mayor Phil Hardberger said Thursday that he will continue to pursue relocating the New Orleans Saints to San Antonio: http://www.ksat.com/sports/5143279/detail.html
Well now the city is trying to purge South By Southwest from its neighbor Austin.
Councilman says S.A. officials should meet with South by Southwest organizers: http://www.bizjournals.com/sanantonio/blog/2011/04/san-antonio-councilman-says-local.html
South by Southwest: No way, San Antonio: http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/2011/04/25/south-by-southwest-no-way-san-antonio.html
Come on now, rather than steal from other cities why not just try to stand on your own to make your city better. I mean seriously, I知 having a hard time not hating this city right about now.
sweet-d May 2nd, 2011, 10:41 PM ok no one cares.
TampaMike May 2nd, 2011, 10:56 PM They didn't get anywhere, it was a suggestion. If anything, they probably called, talked about why San An would make a great location, and was told "Thanks, but not thanks.". Is it really stealing anyways if the team or company WANTS to go to San An?

I'm sure nobody took that SXSW move seriously except for that one councilman, but whatever...
desertpunk May 3rd, 2011, 12:46 AM It does speak to a kind of frustration that city officials get into when they swing for the fences and roll one to the first baseman. San Antonio obviously has enormous civic and cultural assets it can leverage to achieve something great. It just has to come from within and not just poached fom some other burg. An NFL franchise for the S.A.- Austin region seems inevitable but woe to those that try to pry away the Saints. And double woe to those that think they can muscle in on Austin's weirdness. ;)

Well in the case of the Saints, post-Katrina and post-Superbowl win, it does smack of kicking N.O. while it's down. If San Antonio were bidding for the Giants or Jets, no one outside the NY-NJ area would bat an eyelash.

I once had an idea how San Antonio could get its own professional football team, but no one seemed to ever want to listen unless I charged a price for it. So, I am available if they want to know and, as usual, I am dirt cheap.

Well, I remember when this happened. In the article it even said that the Saints owner was interested in relocating the franchise to San Antonio. Being here during that time, the citizens and media of San Antonio did feel that it was making them look bad, as if they were trying to steal from an ailing city, so it's not as if San Antonio officials and the public just out of the blue wanted to steal the team. In no way am I defending any official or citizen that wanted to kick New Orleans as it was falling by taking it's team, but that cannot be said for the whole. Besides that was 6 years ago and Hardberger is not the mayor anymore.
A city trying to lure in a sports team or convention? Shocking!!
In general it is really no secret that cities try to lure professional sports, big businesses, corporations, events, and even citizens from other cities. It may come as a surprise to some though I am sure you could find dirt on any major city about this. It certainly is not pretty, but it happens regardless.

It would be easier to get the superbowl winning Packers to relocate to San Antonio. Speaking of the city of Green Bay, a new Quickie Mart is being built on First St. off of Maple Avenue.
LSyd May 3rd, 2011, 04:15 AM so is San Antonio like the Bed Intruder of cities then? is that what you're trying to say?

ardamir May 3rd, 2011, 05:22 PM You make it sound like its a bad thing.
TU 'cane May 4th, 2011, 02:05 AM ok no one cares.
Same issue when OKC hosted the Hornets... Some people do care.
Anyway, San Antonio stands no chance of landing an expansion franchise. The NFL has made it clear it does not plan to expand anytime soon, but, if it would, it would be to Los Angeles.
The process of acquiring a team in the NFL will be through relocation. The teams that have had the most discussion surrounding relocation are the Vikings, Jaguars, and Bills. The Vikings and Jaguars are the biggest contenders for Los Angeles and the Bills have the best chance of going to Toronto.
Now, I'm not saying anything. Every time I bring these points up, someone gets all huffy and states that I am entirely wrong, when I'm not. I will admit I haven't seen any updates for the past year, those were the teams and cities in the running for any type of movement in the NFL.
San Antonio has stated that it should be next in line, I don't know if it should or not. The Superdome was just renovated and if there is a team that is supported in New Orleans, it would be the Saints. However, New Orleans sports teams seem to have terrible owners who are willing to sell out. The Hornets owner was a schmuck and now this story is popping up.
papa_spaz May 4th, 2011, 05:01 PM I can understand the people of San Antonio becoming excited b/c the Saints played a couple of games there when Katrinia hit. It was a temporary stay during a natural disaster. The same with the Hornets. In the end this stay helped OKC obtain a NBA team but I don't see San Antonio having a NFL team anytime soon. OKC had a new venue with the ability to upgrade. The Alamo dome is to old. It lacks luxury box suites and does not have the ability to create them. The Super Dome is old as well but it was built the right way. It has plenty of luxury boxes. San Antonio would need a new stadium which is not an easy task to complete.
Los Angeles and Toronto have been mentioned. Geography wise Portland would be a nice fit b/c of the lack of NFL teams in the northwest. I think a NHL team would be perfect for Austin or San Antonio. They would not compete with UT in anyway. Texas only has one NHL team in Dallas.
Green Bay Packers moving??? LOL, no way. This is one of the most storied franchises in all of football. Yes, Green Bay is a small city but the entire state of Wisconsin supports the Packers.
Panteran May 4th, 2011, 10:27 PM Texas is already dominated by the cowboys. No way Jerry would allow yet another team to take claim in his territory! Lol. Seriously, the odds of the packers moving to SA is about the same as the cowboys going to SA, not sure why it is even brought up...
And you shouldn't hate a city for trying to promote itself and obtain a great asset as a pro sports franchise. Perhaps one day SA will be large enough with enough influence for another pro franchise to emerge there.

Its not that San Antonio is trying to obtain things to improve the city that bothers me, its the tactics they're using IMO that are "foul". The Saints NFL thing was totally insensitive. The timing was just bad. People where trying to help New Orleans at the time but San Antonio was more interested in kicking the city while it was down. As for SXSW, its kind of the same thing. Austin has done a phenomenal job with the way it has grown that event. Its that city's signature event and has given them world wide attention. They had a few hiccups this past year and what does San Antonio do? Rather than come up with an idea to maybe share the event with Austin, or offer to bus people back and fourth from their city's hotels, they do what they do best. They make an unsolicited offer to poach the entire event from their neighbor. Lame!

It was a suggestion made by one person not an official campaign made by the city. Your perception of the story has no basis in any actual or real events.
ardamir May 6th, 2011, 08:00 PM I recall the owner of the Saints was shopping around for a new home before Katrina hit. Besides, the Alamodome is not suited for a NFL franchise. UTSA will be playing there this upcoming season.

After the embarrassment of being told by the SXSW organizers that they could haul azz its very easy to now say, oh we weren't serious, it was just one person with a crazy idea. But it seems that "one guy" had a lot of support...
"SAN ANTONIO -- Is SXSW getting too big for Austin? That's the lingering question after this year's music, film and interactive festival wrapped up with more than a few problems. Now city leaders in San Antonio are hoping to bring the popular venue to the Alamo City.
The biggest issue in the Capitol city seemed to be lack of hotel space, which one of the main arguments city leaders in San Antonio plan to make to those in charge of SXSW.
The 10-day music, film, and interactive conference and festival attracts international attention and brings in about 200,000 people every single year.
Councilman John Clamp says the Alamo City has more than enough hotel rooms to host the event. He says Fiesta is a prime example of how well the city handle's crowd control.
"When you bring 200,000 people downtown over, you know, a 10-day period that is heads and beds, our hotels, restaurants, our vendors, our retail shops. Every business is impacted by those people," says Clamp.
SXSW is also great for local growth.
Last year alone the festival brought in more than $113 million to the Austin economy.
San Antonio city leaders are meeting next week to talk about approaching organizers of the event."

Individual city leaders or staff throwing out ideas or discussing options is part of their job. Some stuff sticks, some doesn't. Given your moniker I'll ask - Are you old enough to recall some of the measures Charlotte pulled to strengthen their position among banking interests? Or Raleigh's aggressive pursuit of the Whalers that left the folks of Hartford rather hard-done? Neither may have matched the scale or tune we saw sometimes regarding the Saints, but the theme is the same: City leaders and officials doing what they can to advance their community. Sports have simply become the high-profile poster child for such antics, but it's been the norm for ages regarding events (festivals, bowl games, political events), manufacturing plants, trade ports, etc. Economic opportunism will always be intertwined with politics when you're talking about such scale.

But it is possible to get a franchise into San Antonio. To do so, one just has to be more of a devious b@stard than the NFL owners of which I happen to be:nuts:
FLAWDA-FELLA May 13th, 2011, 02:13 PM When I lived in San Antone back in the eighties, there was an USFL team(Gunslingers) in town that didn't draw much fan support. Perhaps a joint effort between S.A. & Austin to bring an NFL franchise to South Texas may be a more viable option. Besides, if both Florida & California can support 3 NFL teams, I don't see why Texas shouldn't be able too.

Yeah I get you.... But dude c'mon USFL vs NFL... Coming from a true sports fan... I don't care if the sa team would suck.. I would support them and go to a majority of their games
