View Full Version : State Place
The Urban Politician September 25th, 2004, 06:24 AM What do you guys think about State Place?
I don't think it's an architectural masterpiece, but it is quite a structure. It occupies an entire block, has 3 midrises, and 1 highrises--all 1 giant structure! It creates a nice streetwall along State St, provides retail; and all of this, right next to an 'L station.
Also, isn't there something else involved with this project--some sort of underground connection between two 'L lines?
edsg25 September 25th, 2004, 10:12 PM I'd say it's a heckuva an improvement over the police HQ!
that deck that the high-rise and midrises share looks like a great space for the residents.
I do like the way the development is handling homes over shops concept.
geoff_diamond September 26th, 2004, 04:05 AM I've got no complaints about it. This is the first I've heard about there being an underground component to it though.
simulcra September 28th, 2004, 08:15 AM it's definitely far from being ugly. the orange line roosevelt stop overlooks it directly and I have to take the orange line with my crew team whenever we have to CTA our way to the boat launch site (if our van breaks down). I think it'll be a nice boon for the area.
And I don't know about the underground complement since all the L lines (red/green/orange) are all connected already... there's a REALLY long but also nicely decorated (with a timeline of the universe and some mosaics) tunnel/stairway that connects the red state street subway line with the green/orange elevated lines.
edsg25 September 28th, 2004, 12:55 PM I find that State Place, even under construction, gives an entrance to the State Street in the Loop area from Roosevelt Road that in the past was offered by Congress Parkway. There is a sense of "arriving".
They certainly got the podium idea right: not a garage, but stores that relate to the city scape. Meanwhile, that is a nice piece of real estate on top of it for residents, a large but compartmentalized area for those who live in the building and want to enjoy being outdoors within their own community.
geoff_diamond September 28th, 2004, 06:00 PM So... has anyone heard any word on what stores will be gracing the site?

And that's the undeground component. That link was built under State Place before construction started on it. I think three years ago.

It's safe to say, given our aging population, any new development will automatically be 'graced' with a Walgreen's or some other similar pharmaceutical outlet. . .
simulcra September 29th, 2004, 09:54 PM I'm fairly sure there already is a walgreen's nearby... or that may have just been a video store.

It doesn't matter. . . they're still going to put one along Roosevelt at State. . .
The Urban Politician September 30th, 2004, 01:08 AM I swear, if I see another goddamn Walgreens in downtown Chicago I'll scream
Rivernorth September 30th, 2004, 03:19 AM A Walgreens? Thats a shame. I'd prefer a mid range clothing store, as that would fit well on State, and possibly bring actual shopping further south on State. Then again, North State could also use a boost.
Either way, great to see the South Loop slowly fill out. Too many damn lots and too much general desolation exists south of Harrison St... Hell, Congress Parkway isnt pretty either.
