nazrey September 25th, 2004, 08:01 AM Wonderful impression !! .How many stadiums are there in Penang?
Pablo September 25th, 2004, 08:23 AM 2 stadiums--1) City Stadium
2) Batu Kawan Stadium
This two r the biggest stadiums in Penang. Batu Kawan Stadium is the biggest stadium in the Northern region while Penang City Stadium just renovated. This 2 stadiums r special for big event like SUKMA.
Penang internasional Sports Arena (PISA) is the largest indoor Sport Arena in the Northern region.:)
Actually Penang has more than 2 stadiums...I think in the middle of seberang Prai and Kepala Batas ( Penang Mini Putrajaya ) also have stadium, but they r small...
Oh ya..Penang University Sains Malaysia (USM) also has 1 stadium. Many schools' sport day r held at there even the MSSPP.;)
So total stadiums in Penang: 5 stadiums exclude PISA

Amazing skaters: Cutting and Van Wyk
will be performing in PISA this weekend.
THE magical combination of ‘happily ever after’ and ice-skating will hit Penang this weekend as Disney on Ice: Mickey & Minnie’s Amazing Journey is staged at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA).
Part of the 46-member international cast in town for the production were Amber Van Wyk and Joshua Cutting, both former national skaters for their countries.
Falling in love with the ice at the age of 10, Cutting now believes he has one of the best jobs in the world.
“There’s something about Disney productions that takes people out of the ‘normal’ world.
“It’s like an escape into a world of magic and fantasy and nothing very serious.
“And even if there are serious things, everything gets wrapped up wonderfully in the end in a ‘happily ever after’,” said Cutting, 29, who skated competitively in his hometown of Ontario, Canada, before joining ice shows nine years ago.
Cutting, a line captain in the production, will portray the part of David, a clumsy lovable surfer who has a crush on Nani, Lilo’s older sister in the movie Lilo & Stitch.
The magically combination of happy endings and unforgettable tunes has always been a hit with Van Wyk, who loved The Little Mermaid while growing up in Minnesota, the United States.
“I always loved how the music managed to bring out the story in Disney films.
“On the ice, there’s just so much freedom of movement, almost like a flying sensation. ‘Skating’ the movies is almost better than watching them and the feeling is indescribable,” said the lanky 26-year-old.
However, portraying the evil, fur-seeking Cruella De Vil in the production would seem to be a challenge for the sweet, curly haired American lass.
“This is my first role in ice shows after joining Disney On Ice last year, and I really enjoy the character.
“There’s so much drama and comedy in Cruella and it was a nice change from always striving to look pretty and graceful in competitive skating.
“With this character, there was that same challenge of being graceful but at the same time embodying what it is to be a true villain,” Van Wyk said.
Audiences who attend the event in Penang will be in for a special treat as Mickey & Minnie’s Amazing Journey incorporates five segments of Disney’s most loved animated features.
“Mickey and Minnie are like the tour guides of the show and they visit London for the 101 Dalmatians, Hawaii with Lilo & Stitch, go under the sea in The Little Mermaid, to Neverland with Peter Pan and Africa with the cast from The Lion King,” Cutting said.
Daring twists, spins, double axels and lifts are just some of the attractions that the ice show promises, alongside colourful costumes and beautiful backdrops.
“The audience should pay special attention to the end of The Lion King segment,” Cutting said, hinting that the routine will involve a skating move called the ‘headbanger’.
Disney on Ice: Mickey & Minnie’s Amazing Journey will be staged at PISA on April 12 at 11am, 4.30pm and 8.30pm and April 13 at 11am and 4.30pm.
Tickets are priced at RM55, RM105, RM155 and RM205 (excluding an RM3 Axcess fee for each ticket). To book tickets, call 1300 88 3011 or 03-7711 5000. More information can be found at www.disneyonice.com or www. prworldwidelive.com.

THOUSANDS were enchanted by Disney On Ice - Mickey & Minnie's Amazing Journey at the Penang International Sports Arena recently.
For the adults, it was a trip down memory lane back to their childhood while the children adored seeing their favourite Disney characters frolic and dance right in front of their eyes.
All, young and old alike, were transported to the enchanting worlds of Disney’s The Lion King, Lilo & Stitch, The Little Mer-maid, 101 Dalmations and Peter Pan.

Told in mini-episodes, the story showcases Mickey and Minnie’s travels around the globe visiting magical lands.
Starting off in the African savannah with Simba and friends from The Lion King, Disney on Ice’s international team of award-winning skaters brought picture postcard worlds to life, aided by wonderful choreography and music.

The setting then went beneath the waves for a reggae-spiced romp featuring Ariel and Sebastian of The Little Mermaid.
It was five-year-old Chew Xiao Wen’s favourite scene.
“It’s our first time watching a Disney show and we enjoyed it,” said Chew’s mother Celine Goh.

There was also a dreamy London cityscape, the setting of Peter Pan and a colourful tropical island which provided the backdrop for Lilo & Stitch.
“It was very interesting, I feel younger after watching the show,” joked Goh Kong Leng who is in his 20s.
The mood and lighting created by Patrick Dierson brought a sense of realism to each scene.
“This particular show is very water-oriented. Never Land is an island, Ariel’s story takes place under the sea, and Lilo lives in Hawaii,” Dierson explained, adding that special effects were used to make the ice look like the surface of the ocean in some scenes.

“Not only is this show a journey to many Disney destinations, it is also a journey of emotions,” said director Jerry Bilik.
There were also beautiful costumes made by costume designer Arthur Boccia. From nightgowns, grass skirts, fur coats down to the black-and-white spotted Dalmation outfits, everything was faithfully reproduced from the original cartoons.
R. Para, PR Worldwide Live director said that the management had reduced ticket prices by almost 20% this year to enable more families to enjoy a day out.

THE Penang Education, Training and Career Expo 2008 will be held at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) at the end of the year.
The two-day expo to be held on Dec 20 and Dec 21, is jointly organised by Social Economic and Research Institute (Seri), Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) and PenEvents Sdn Bhd.
It is expected to feature a comprehensive showcase on education solutions and opportunities.
Its organising chairman Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon said the expo would also feature talks on career prospects and education opportunities abroad, not just booths set up by education and training institutes.
The talks, he said, would also cover topics on how to apply for Public Service Department (PSW) scholarships, PSDC training opportunities, education opportunities in Australia and the United Kingdom. Students would find the talks on employment and job growth trends in the coming years, useful.
Event director Ong Ban Seang said the state government-endorsed expo would also give the players in the education industry a chance to meet and network.

nazrey November 7th, 2008, 06:43 PM Penang Government Wants Two Sport-Related Projects To Resume
November 07, 2008 17:18 PM
PENANG, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- The Penang government has urged the Sports and Youth Ministry to resume two sport-related projects which were put on hold, for the sake of youths and athletes in the state.
State Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman, Ong Kok Fooi said the application for the projects was made in 2006 and approved under the Ninth Malaysian Plan.
She said the projects comprised the construction of a dry gym at the Penang International Sports Arena and upgrading of the Bertam Sports Complex, each project costing RM3.5 million.
"However, on Sept 9 this year, the ministry sent us a letter informing that the projects were being put on hold, without any excuse or indication on when they would resume," she told a press conference here today.
She hoped that the ministry would not bring political differences into the matter, but try to resolve the long-standing issue as soon as possible.
Ong said the dry gym and the sports complex were vital to the gymnasts and water-sport athletes who currently had to travel back and forth to either Ipoh, Perak or Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, to use the facilities there.
"We are not just concerned about the costs incurred, but also the safety of our athletes and coaches who have to travel to the two states for their weekly training," she added.

Thursday February 19, 2009
FENCING enthusiasts should grab the opportunity to attend the ongoing International Common-wealth Junior Championships featuring over 200 fencers, aged 20 and below, from 15 countries such as Australia, Britain, Guern-sey, the Isle of Man and New Zealand.
Admission is free and the five-day competition, which started on Tuesday at the Penang Interna-tional Sports Arena, is from 9am to 6pm.
Organised by the Penang Ama-teur Fencing Association (PAFA), the competition is only being held for the second time after its inaugural event in Chennai, India, back in 2006.
PAFA president and organising chairman Datuk Dr Kenny Ong in his opening address said the international competition was initially headed to Kuala Lumpur but Pe- nang managed to wrest it from them.
“We have excellent venues such as PISA to hold these international competitions. In fact, PISA was also the venue for some events during the 1998 Commonwealth Games.”
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who officiated the event, said there would be more opportunities for the state to host similar international competitions in the near future.
“We will use PAFA’s successful partnership with private companies and sponsors as a model to follow when holding events of such nature.”
As the hosts, Malaysia have the largest contingent with 48 fencers in two teams.
Penang Fencing Association honorary secretary and National Sports Council development coach Lim Peng Jin said the state’s 12 national junior fencers selected by their ranking were among the best in the country.
The championship consists of individual and team events for all three weapons which are the foil, sabre and epee .
