Lake Geneva (WI), Dunes (IN shore), Harbor Country (s.w. MI, on Lk Mich) are the closest. Chicagoans actually Further afield: nw IL (Galena), Door Co (WI), upper shores of Mich's lower peninsula (Traverse City up to Maccinac), Starved Rock (state pk in IL) Eagle River area (No WI). the Dells, of course! Actually, much of Wisconsin is Chgo vacation country. Milwaukee is a draw for those who want another (and much smaller) city. And if they're interested in day trips right in the metro area: the Fox River towns (Geneva, St. Charles, etc.), the Chgo Botanic Gardens (Glencoe), a drive up the North Shore on Sheridan Road (Evanston to Lake Bluff), Illinois-and-Michigan canal right of way, Kankakee River college football weekend in Champaign, Iowa City, Madison, South Bend, Bloomington, etc. STR September 25th, 2004, 07:34 PM Yeah, Wisconsin Dells looks nice. (mindless bored stupor) edsg25 September 25th, 2004, 08:57 PM Yeah, Wisconsin Dells looks nice. (mindless bored stupor) STR, there really is plenty more in the Dells today that have little to do with the tackiness along the strip. Resorts have gone upscale and at many of them you can have a great time without even leaving the grounds. The original Dells scenery still is quite beautiful. The Dells are evolving and much of the tourist trap tackiness will continue to be less and less of the mix. geoff_diamond September 26th, 2004, 05:04 AM Why would we need to escape? Non-Chicagoans escape to Chicago on the weekends... we stay put :) edsg25 September 26th, 2004, 05:59 AM Why would we need to escape? Non-Chicagoans escape to Chicago on the weekends... we stay put :) forgive me, geoff, for not mentioning oogling the scantily clad broads at Oak Street beach, as the chief weekend get away. would a weekend jaunt to old orchard or oakbrook be considered acceptable? geoff_diamond September 26th, 2004, 08:34 AM FUCK NO!!!! Better you should go to the Dells! Why would you want to go to some stupid suburban mall!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! edsg25 September 26th, 2004, 04:54 PM FUCK NO!!!! Better you should go to the Dells! Why would you want to go to some stupid suburban mall!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! geoff, chill! old orchard and oakbrook don't even have f-ing roofs on them. that's got to count for something. i mean, i didn't go off of the deep end here and make the ridiculous suggestion of going to woodfield! are you seriously suggesting that culture isn't alive and well in Skokie (even if the matzoh balls and kreplach aren't what they used to be)???? Rivernorth September 26th, 2004, 09:04 PM Hell, Woodfield would be better than Oakbrook. Atleast your sales tax goes to Cook County then :) edsg25 September 26th, 2004, 11:27 PM That settles it. I'm going with Old Orchard: no roof, AND the taxes go to Cook County. But would someone please let the owners know we wouldn't be caught dead telling someone we were going to a place that calls itself Westfield Shoppingtown, no matter how many of those stupid signs they put up across the nation. 24gotham September 27th, 2004, 12:51 AM Yeah, on Michigan Ave, Nordstrom is locatated at "Westfield Shops at North Bridge" That's just wrong. Why do they feel they need to brand a mall? Who cares, a mall is a mall, whether it be in the city or the burbs, it is still a mall. (Although the ones in the city are usually at least better designed.) If the urge comes up to go to a suburban mall, I would have to choose Old Orchard. Not that the the urge ever comes up, ever, but if a gun was held to my head, I would choose Old Orchard. geoff_diamond September 27th, 2004, 05:22 PM bah... I'll never chill when someone talks about *gasp* wandering beyond the city limits. Wait... on second thought... the ocassional trip to Ikea is acceptable :) Steely Dan September 27th, 2004, 05:35 PM Why would we need to escape? Non-Chicagoans escape to Chicago on the weekends... we stay put :) i'm with you man, why would city dwellers wish to escape on the weekends? summer weekends in chicago are filled with good times. mystad September 27th, 2004, 09:29 PM In my experience, the "Chicagoans" seeking weekend getaways in Wisconsin tend to be more often from the suburbs than from the actual city. 24gotham September 27th, 2004, 11:12 PM ^It's cause they need to excape from the burbs, and they are too afraid of the city. :) edsg25 September 28th, 2004, 04:27 AM ^It's cause they need to excape from the burbs, and they are too afraid of the city. :) Rest assured, InTheLoop, that that great big city of Chicago is well loved from the beaches of the North Shore to the Land beyond O'Hare and among the crab grass of DuPage. Suburban Chicagoans would die without the city being there. So only Suburbians like to get away from the city? Imperial Teen September 28th, 2004, 06:35 AM My wife regularly suggested going somewhere on the weekend. ANd I was always "what are you crazy, waste a weekend that could be spent in Chicago!" mystad September 28th, 2004, 05:21 PM So only Suburbians like to get away from the city? No. Let me clarify. As a young kid growing up in Wisconsin, our lakes in the summer were jammed with other Wisconsinites as well as "Chicago" people who were more often than not from places like Lisle and Downer's Grove. We just assumed they were all from the city. tigidig14 July 16th, 2006, 03:12 AM i mana go to 6flags of america, 2morow bnk July 16th, 2006, 04:33 AM I will be on lake genvea in 2 weeks. :) The Urban Politician July 16th, 2006, 04:53 AM What's up with you people reviving extraordinarily ancient threads? ;) Azn_chi_boi July 16th, 2006, 06:55 AM Gurnee Mills and Woodfield! Its true, but I don't go there on my weekends. If it during the school year, on weekends, I usually take the L and hang out around downtown and the lake or maybe still in my neighborhood. If it is summer, Old Orchard shopping, downtown, or the North Ave. Beach, if it is nice, or maybe Wisconsin Dells, Indiana Dunes, or even up to Milwaukee.
