Pictures from my most recent trip, an almost four week long journey in the Nepal Himalaya. After a few days in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal with almost 5 million people i took a
flight to Lukla, a tiny 450m long airstrip at 2800m with 12% gradient, known as one of the most dangerous airstrips in the world. From there i trekked up through the Khumbu
Valley towards Everest Basecamp. My trip didn't go to the crowded Everest BC but to Chhukhung and then to the ultimate climb of Imja Tse (Island Peak), 6 189m. In between all
this i explored villages and towns of the Khumbu valley, and climbed the Chhukhung Ri (5550m) as acclimation.

I originally wanted to show all the pictures horizontally, but since i later discovered its hard to scroll horizontally on all browsers except Chrome i change it to the standard up
to down. You can still see all these pictures horizontally here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=3132755&postcount=1) (recommended if you have Chrome). Also, press F11 to go Fullscreen if you are on a low screen resolution, the
pictures are somewhat large.

Very interesting thread. Nepal, especially its cities and towns, is a place that rarely gets shown in photos. I'm eagerly waiting for the other shots, especially the ones from the climbs ;)
BTW, the horizontal scrolling using the shift key only works in OS X, but not Windows (at least using Chrome). Then again, it's a good tip - didn't know about it until now :D

^^ i guess i should have done some more research before using a horizontal layout. Everything works perfect in Chrome on Windows 7. In Firefox you can easily use the right arrow key, works well, at least to me. Opera however has fucked up everything and seem to cut the pictures at 15 000 pixels so that half of the pictures fall down. If you are using Explorer you are lost, any type of scrolling horizontally there is dead slow. So this destroys my wish of having horizontal layout as easy as the standard up to down.

So easiest options are (on Windows 7):
Chrome: Hold SHIFT and scroll
Firefox: Use arrow right key
Opera: Use arrow right key (but the browser doesn't put the picture horizontally)
Explorer: Use scroll bar on the bottom of the browser

So should i arrange the pictures back to the standard up to down instead?

Actually, I retract my comment. When I was trying it the first time, I had my mouse and keyboard connected to my Win 7 PC over the network using Synergy. When they're connected via USB, the shift key works. :)

Changed it back to a normal layout, so nobody should have any fuss scrolling now! Still, there is a link on top to a post where i put the previous horizontal layout.

Very interesting place. Can't wait to see the pictures from the mountains! The vertical panorama in the panorama -thread is amazing.

I originally wanted to show all the pictures horizontally, but since i later discovered its hard to scroll horizontally on all browsers except Chrome i
change it to the standard up to down.

Horizontal scrolling works perfect on Safari+Magic Mouse

Continuing towards Himalaya, some in flight pictures taken from the Kathmandu - Lukla flight. Due to weather, and a very poor flight system in Nepal it took me 2 days on
Kathmandu Airport to get on the flight. But finally, after those very long two days i got my life most amazing flight flying through narrow valleys eventually landing on the
450m long Lukla airstrip, one of the most dangerous airports with planes crashing and fatalities claimed almost yearly. Since these pictures were taken through a shitty
Dornier Do 228 window the quality of the pictures are low. Click here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=3132755&postcount=1) to view the pictures horizontally.

Thanks for the pictures Þróndeimr. Looks like you have had an exciting trip. Are all the houses in your pictures of Lukla under construction?

Þróndeimr
May 8th, 2011, 09:08 PM
^^ no, thats suburb of Kathmandu (partially completed buildings, most buildng in Nepal never gets completed), Lukla is a small village in the Himalayas. Its the flattest place you can find there, thats why they built an airport there. Still, the runway goes uphill/downhill (12%). I am adding some descriptions to the images now.

From the airport in Lukla you have to walk for two days to reach Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Khumbu Region situated at 3 440m. Sadly the
weather stayed dull on these days, mostly grey and cloudy during the day. And in that sort of weather my
pictures turn as dull as the weather, so this is a boring and poor set of images. View the pictures arranged vertically here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=3132755&postcount=1).

I did two nights in Namche Bazaar, with a acclimatisation trip on my spare day. I had some plans of doing a spectacular trip to a ridge at 4300m, but
another day with poor weather made me just take a hike up to some neighbor villages to Namche (Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde) before
i walked up through some foggy forests up to 4100 before going down again.

Awesome pics, trondheimer - been waiting a long time for these :)

Looks like you had an incredible trip.. did you really sleep in a tent? Seems like it shouldn't be too expensive to get a decent room there. The buildings in Nepal look sort of similar to those I have seen in Cairo - though far more colorful.

Btw, I think I've been in this town in Uncharted 2: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y136/cityw/Skyscrapercity/BETWEENBAR_3pix.jpg :D (last pic on the previous page)

Not even kidding - ever played the game? A part of it takes place in that area and I swear I got a deju vu when I saw that picture.

Sort of reminds me of Machu Picchu in Peru - next trip for you, perhaps? :)

During my trek up the valley i sleeps in lodges, prize at 100 to 200 Nepali rupees (7-14NOK) a night. You won't find any hot showers except from in Namche (500 - 1000 N.rupees a night for room with private bathroom). No toilet except from a hole in the floor exists outside Namche, and electricity is primitive, most rooms had one lamp they managed to power 2 hours in the morning around sunset and 2 hours in the evening after sunset.

But later on you will see that i vent outside the livable areas, there a tent is your only shelter for a few days.

I've seen some friends playing Unchartered 2, can't really remember where it looked like it could be though. Anyway, S.America and Asia is my favorite travelling destinations and so far i've only been to Asia three times, so S.America must happen sooner or later.

Next step of the trip was to go from Namche Bazaar (3440m) to Dingboche (4410m). This is a three day trip with one acclimatisation day in Tengboche,
a village located about in the middle at 3860m. I decided to skip the acclimatisation day in Tengboche and did it in two days since i caped with the
altitude very well. This first part of images show the first stage, from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche. The day i left Namche the winds shifted and finally
i got the weather i was hoping for, i just hoped it would stay as nice all the way to the top. As usual you can view the images arranged horizontally here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=3132755&postcount=1).

What a place... it must have been exciting. Although it does look depressing in some photos. I mean the way people live and their habitats where living quality, I would guess, is not quite excellent. The photography itself is top notch, as we all expect from you. :)

From Tengboche (3860m) to Dingboche (4410m). As i had no guide or porter and carrying everything my self my backpack starts feeling a lot heavier passing 4000m.
Uphills as getting really slow (and here everything is uphill!). As i have to stack up on more water the weight of my backpack goes up to 20kg, not much for a porter, not
too much for me either on a daytrip in Norway, but more than enough on my 6th day from the airport in this altitude. And i have more than 2000m left!

On the sixth day from Lukla i walk from Dingboche to Chhukhung, the last settlement on the trail to Island Peak at 4 730m. As you leave the main trekking rout
to Mt. Everest Basecamp your surroundings seem to double in beauty. Walking up the valley with Taboche Peak (6 367m) in your back, the amazing Ama
Dablam (6 856m) to the south and the massive Lhotse (8 516m) getting ever closer as you walk, it was damn nice! Then, most of this rout is uphill, slowly and not
steep, but forever going up. Closing 5000m with a heavy backpack claim your energy, and you never seem to get any energy back as you take breaks and eat food.

Map showing Dingboche to Chhukhung rout. As i arrived in Chhuchkung i left my backpack there and did a
3 hour trip up to a little moraine peak of rocks at 5 045m for a stunning view of Ama Dablam and the glaciers running down.

Time to finish the thread! I stayed in Chhukhung for two nights as i planned on doing a peak north of the village closer to the Lhotse wall, called
Chhukhung Ri at 5 550m. Finally i could walk a whole day without bringing along my backpack, and i noticed my physical condition seemed far better than two other
groups going up on the same day! So far i haven't had a single case of headache, dizziness or anything i was expecting from altitude sickness. As i was in
Tibet on Mt. Everest Basecamp i know what i had to expect. Since i was now going up to 5 550m, almost 300m higher than i have ever been before i
guessed i would feel something. Going up was fairly easy though going over 5000m means you need time to take every step forward. I came up eventually,
and the view was awesome! I sat at the top for 1 hour looking at some really spectacular glacial avalanches rolling down the southface of Lhotse as

Then the final installment. Island peak (6 189m) have had some fine days now and i heard of several successful teams that made it up. However, following the
blizzard two days before the temperature dropped to well below zero even in the middle of the day. I was planning on or at least hoping to find a place to sleep
the next night between Basecamp (4950m) and the attackcamp (5600m). The walk to the basecamp went all fine though it was a bit of a walk through lots of
rocks and morraines. I came to Basecamp and met some guys i was chatting to further down the valley who had tried to summit that they but didn't success
due to the cold and been exosted. I had a awesomely good dryfood dinner just after basecamp as i was about to start the steep climb towards attackcamp.
As i finnished the food i noticed some clouds shaping up all around us and quite soon i took the decisson to put up my tent immediately before it started
snowing. I rushed the tent and about 5min later it started snowing, the wind picked up and i gof a great Himalayan blizzard! Since the blizzards i've
experienced so far just lasted half an hour i still haven't given up on rwacheding higher levels before night came, but after 30min i went outside for a photoshoot.
I was about to walk back to basecamp to see how things was working out there when i noticed some sherpas going up the mountain. I deceided to join in and
tried to reach them as we accended Island Peak, as i love harsh weather! After a while i reached them and i was told to head down at once, but i informed
them that i was Norwegian and then i was allowed to join as they were heading up to search for several missing tourists who was suppose to summit but who
had apparently been lost during the blizzard. It took us about 2 hours to reach attack camp where a Russian expedition was camping. Some bad winds with
snow, the effective temperature was well below -30c, with visibility from 1m to 50m. I took two pics here, but the camera had a hard time getting focus, and
the cold was killing my batteries as soon as i put them in the camera. We found three expedition members at 5800m, whom was so exosted they could not walk
them selves. They also had a sherpa who we could not find. We had to carry them all the way down to Basecamp, then we reached it, the expedition members
had been on Island Peak for 18 hours. Several days later, when i came back to Lukla word reached me that a sherpa was found dead after falling during the
blizzard.

I got to bed at around 20.00 in the evening, late enough, as i had to start the accend of Island Peak at around 01.00 in the nigh to manage to reach the
summit. The blizzard finally came to an end, but the temperature dropped to similar levels as back home during the coldest periods. Even in my -25c sleeping
bag i had no chance sleeping due to the cold. At around 23.00 i lit up the gass to get some heat, i had more gass than what i needed for my 14 dryfood field-
rations anyway. At 01.00 i was still cold as hell, so it took me a whole lot of time and energy to finally get ready at 03.00. The sky was as clear in in the
mountains in Norway in mid-winter, as cold as well, but the wind was picking up the higher i walked on Island peak. By the time i reached attackcamp just before
the break of dawn there wasn't much visibility due to all the snow blowing from yesterdays blizzard. When the ligh came up i had reached the start of the glacier
and had my ice axe ready since one has to cross some dangerous cravasses and finally a 200m tall, steepness at about 60%, a face covered in ice to get up on
the summit of the mountain. The effective temperature here was probably around -60c, and there was no chance for me to eat any hot food as i was planning
on, but since i came prepared for this i ate some dry noodlez while walking! I never really reached the summit, i guess i turned around 20m before, knowing it
was 20m ahead of me, but it was no point in that weather (and i don't regret turning back). I didn't manage to get a single picture, untill i returned down to
Attackcamp and everything started clearing up again. Conclution: I had one awesome trip!

Lake Imja Tsho. The lake started creating when the glacier started retreting in the 1960s and is today a giant lake held up by some weak morraine shoulders. Its believed that it will soon reach
a critical level where the morrain shoulders can't hold the weight back and collapse. If that happen as with today's emergancy program thousands will die.

Oh how utterly mindblowing, thank you so very much! Both your photos and the trip itself can only be described as highly extraordinary. The panorama shots (both horizontal and vertical) deserve an extra round of :applause: . I admire you for your spirit and your physical condition.

Agreed. This is just too exotic for me. One must be very brave, determined and strong to actually do something like this. I can only pay my respect to Christian here.
