MELAKA, May 7 (Bernama) -- Melaka and Cambodia hope to forge close cooperation in rehabilitating historical sites to strengthen bilateral relations between the two entities, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said.

He said both Melaka and Cambodia had similarities in drawing tourists to visit historical sites especially after both were given recognition as world heritage sites (WHS) through the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

"They have longer experience because they had received WHS recognition since 1992 while Melaka received it in 2007 and as such, Melaka can learn from the experience of Cambodia through the WHS," he told reporters after receiving the visit of Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Sok An who made a one-day visit to Melaka.

Mohd Ali said the state government would make an official visit to the country, that is famous because of the Angkor Wat, at the end of the year. "Cambodia also invited Melaka to invest in its rubber planting industry while the state goverment wants more Cambodians to explore the opportunity of pursuing further studies and seek the best health and medical services here," he said.

Meanwhile, Sok An said Melaka and Cambodia could establish ties on the preservation and conservation on historic sites of mutual interest to both sides.

KUCHING: Parkson Retail Group (Parkson) which is 51.6 per cent owned by Parkson Holdings Bhd (PHB) is stepping into an aggressive expansion mode in 2011 after opening three to four outlets in China over the past six years.

In a research report by OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research), the group had earmarked eight outlets each in 2011 and 2012 and seven outlets in 2013, expanding the gross floor area by 16.7 per cent to 23.9 per cent.

Parkson indicated that capital expansion for the growth should range in between RMB400 million to RMB600 million for new stores and remodeling expenses.

The analyst assumed that there was little execution risk as the company had secured most of the land needed for expansion. Due to the opening of more new outlets and marketing activities, Parkson expected merchandise gross margins to decline by one to two percentage points in 2011.

The group also noted that its first quarter financial year 2011 (FY11) results, scheduled to be released May 19, should be in line with consensus estimates and was targeting a same-store-sales (SSS) growth of 12 per cent to 13 per cent in 2011.

While it was announced that PHB was acquiring 90.1 per cent of PT Tozy Bintang Sentosa Group (TBS) in Indonesia for a total consideration of RM39.5 million, the group indicated that no cash was involved with the corporate exercise.

Hence, the announcement was structured in such a way to comply with the regulations in Indonesia. The exercise would be completed in June or July 2011.

The research house believed that first quarter calendar year 2010 same-store sales (SSS) growth for Vietnam and Malaysia could be better than the group’s guidance of 15 per cent to 20 per cent and five per cent to six per cent respectively.

This together with the indicated in-line SSS growth from China led OSK Research to believe that PHB’s ninth month FY11 results should be at least in-line with consensus’ estimates.

The group planned to open its first retail mall – Festival City Mall in July 2011 and there were four more new outlets in the pipeline in 2012. Parkson was targeting to enter Phnom Penh officially in end of 2012 or early 2013.

While fundamentals remain unchanged, the research house’s net profit forecasts for FY11 and FY12 were reduced by three per cent to four per cent to RM350.5 million and RM422 million respectively due to some house-keeping exercises.

Based on 24 times price earnings for its China operation, 15 times for Malaysia operation, and 12 times for Vietnam and excluded stores, the pegged fair value was increased to RM7.42 per share from RM6.31 per share previously.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), whose unit MSM was listed on Tuesday, hopes to conclude the acquisition of land in Myanmar and Cambodia by year-end.

Felda's chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad told reporters following MSM's listing ceremony that the diversified agriculture and plantation group was in the final stages of negotiation to acquire more land in Myanmar and Cambodia for plantation purposes.

He added that the land in Myanmar covered about 20,000ha.

Felda currently has 853,000ha of land in the country with another 140,000ha outside Malaysia.

MSM debuted at RM4.45, up 95 sen or 30% from its initial public offer price of RM3.50.

Leader sees revenue from US$107mil Cambodia project

GEORGE TOWN: Leader Universal Holdings Bhd (www.leaderuniversal.com/) will be able to generate partial revenue from its US$107mil build-operate-own power transmission concession project in Cambodia in the third quarter of this year.

Group managing director Datuk Sean H'ng Chun Hsiang told reporters after the company AGM that the first phase of the power transmission project between Kampong Cham and north Phnom Penh was scheduled for completion in July.

“We can then start partial billing in the third quarter of this year. The second and third phases will be completed in 2012 and 2013 respectively,” he said.

On the expiry of the power purchase agreement for the power plant in Phnom Penh by 2015, H'ng said the completion of both the coal-fired plant in Sihanoukville and the transmission project in 2013 would ensure that the group's revenue and income from its power business would not be disrupted.

“We currently have in excess of about RM800mil worth of cable and wire products to deliver to our customers. About one-third of the orders on hand come from Asia, Australasia, Middle East and Europe, while the remaining is from domestic customers,” he said.

H'ng said the group would allocate about RM30mil to upgrade its cable production facilities in Kedah and Johor.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police fired tear gas and water cannon, making 1400 arrests during clashes yesterday with protesters who defied government warnings to rally in the capital for electoral reform.

Leaders of opposition parties were among those detained during a massive security operation, but it failed to thwart the outlawed demonstration, in which 50,000 citizens - the organisers' figure - took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Protesters faced baton-wielding riot officers in front of a bus station, retreating and regrouping to push back police lines in a cat-and-mouse confrontation in a downpour.

Some demonstrators fought back by picking up tear gas canisters, which they lobbed at police.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was injured during the protest when he fell on to the pavement after a tear gas attack and was taken to a hospital.

The protesters split into three main groups, and by late yesterday all were trying to reach the king's palace to hand over a memorandum detailing their demands.

However, the police line held firm.

''Why is the government trying to intimidate citizens?'' said Mohamad Manij Abdullah, 50, a businessman who joined the rally.

''We are only trying to reform elections and have a free and fair government.''

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian police confirmed Sunday they arrested 1,667 activists who participated in street rallies in the center of the country's capital Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

The activists were later freed.

Riot police firing rounds of tear gas and water cannon to disperse activists of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) who took to the streets illegally to demand for an electoral reform on Saturday morning.

The number of demonstrators have reached an estimated of 50,000, although authorities put the figure at five to six thousand people.

Many were injured during the stand-off.

Malaysia's opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim who held a press conference this morning condemning the police action at the rally was also arrested.

He was injured during the arrest.

Bersih, a non-government organization, vowed to launch street demonstration on July 9 advocating for a clean and fair election in the next general election, which is expected to start within this year.

Their demands include introducing automatic voter registration, reforms to postal voting and the use of indelible ink.

Elsewhere in the city, members of a Malay rights group under the United Malays National Organization (Umno) - Malaysia's biggest political party and a member of the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional held a counter rally against Bersih to defend the country's electoral system.

The head of the movement was also arrested.

Local police have strengthened security checks inside Kuala Lumpur by blocking many major roads heading to the city center starting from Friday night, dispatching more police forces in the city and using helicopers to monitoring the situation.

Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said on Friday that Bersih and its counterpart were only allowed to rally in stadium outside Kuala Lumpur and any actions inside the capital city was illegal.

KUALA LUMPUR — Police arrested hundreds of people and fired tear gas on protesters in Malaysia’s capital on Saturday in an apparent attempt to prevent an afternoon rally by election reform advocates.

Officials said they had arrested 672 people for “various offenses” by late morning as they closed off roads leading into the capital and some streets in the city in advance of the rally planned at Merdeka Stadium.

Demonstrators were seen scattering Saturday afternoon as police fired tear gas, and it was unknown whether the rally would be held.

Saturday’s confrontation between police and protesters culminated after weeks of growing tension as activists have called on Prime Minister Najib Razak to make election laws more transparent. National elections are expected to be held by the middle of 2012.

Saturday’s rally was organized by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, also known as Bersih, or “clean” in Malay. The coalition is made up of 62 nongovernmental organizations.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, Ambiga Sreenevasan, chairwoman of Bersih, said the arrests and firing of tear gas by police had stirred a sense of outrage among Malaysians.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy and democracy with regular national elections, but Bersih organizers say that elections are vulnerable to manipulation.

They have issued a list of eight demands, including marking voters with indelible ink to prevent them from voting more than once, purging electoral rolls of “phantom voters” and ensuring that opposition parties have equal access to the mainstream news media. The group is also calling for a royal commission to investigate how elections are conducted.

Last Saturday, the government declared Bersih illegal, because it had not registered as an organization and was causing unrest among the public. Bersih countered that it was not a new organization, but rather an alliance of existing groups.

Mr. Razak said the coalition could hold the rally if it agreed to meet in a stadium, rather than on the streets as first planned. Bersih organizers agreed to the terms, but the authorities said that Bersih cannot proceed without a police permit, which normally would not be granted to a group that has been declared illegal.

Bersih leaders responded by accusing the prime minister of having “reneged” on his offer to provide a stadium for their rally. Bersih leaders said they would go ahead with Saturday’s protest, despite not receiving permits from police.

In recent weeks, 225 people have been arrested in connection with the Bersih movement under various laws including the Sedition Act and Emergency Ordinance, which allows for detention without trial. On Thursday, the police said six people remained in custody. Human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have condemned the recent arrests, and called on the government to stop harassing those associated with Bersih.

“The Malaysian government’s crackdown on an electoral reform group shows utter disregard both for free expression and for the democratic process,” Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

A street rally calling for similar changes in 2007, in which the police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters, was credited with helping the opposition make historic gains in the 2008 elections. The next election must be held by mid-2013, but there is speculation it could be held as early as this year.





In rain and chaos, Bersih marches on

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Chaos has broken out in parts of the capital city.

Amidst pouring rain, warning sirens, shouts, chants and the whizzing of tear gas canisters being fired continued to fill the air.

Police helicopters are seen hovering over the city, monitoring the situation from above.

At the absence of their leaders, many of whom are defying orders locking them out of the city, Bersih 2.0’s protestors are moving on their own from separate locations to meet at one location — Stadium Merdeka.

At the historic site, the coalition of 62 NGOs is scheduled to hold its second rally since 2007 calling for electoral reforms.

But the police appear determined to stop them and are seen clubbing at protestors, dragging them away during arrests and piling them into navy blue trucks.

Undeterred, protestors are pushing on in groups, linking arms as they defy orders to stand down through jeers and shouts of “Bersih!”

Some are dressed in Bersih’s yellow, some are brandishing placards or banners and many came prepared with soaked cloths to cover their faces from the gas.

They run helter-skelter to dodge the police, constantly dispersing and regrouping as they move forward, past the plumes of tear gas and smoke.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Malaysians in Singapore today came out in support of Bersih 2.0’s call for free and fair elections in Malaysia, as the group here struggles to make it to its own rally.

Some 120 supporters gathered at Hong Lim Park in the island republic since 2pm this afternoon and began distributing yellow roses to passers-by there.

The organiser said since they did not have any speeches and banners, there was no need for law enforcement officers to be present.

The rally in Singapore is one of the many rallies planned in major locations worldwide in support of Bersih’s call for electoral reform.

Bersih called on all Malaysians across the globe to participate in it’s rally, and today drew tens of thousands of people to try and reach its gathering in the city centre here.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Police detained at least 338 activists trying to assemble at a stadium and sealed off parts of Malaysia's largest city Saturday in an attempt to prevent a banned rally seeking electoral reforms.

The opposition-backed rally planned for Saturday afternoon is the culmination of weeks of pressure on Prime Minister Najib Razak's long-ruling coalition to make election laws fairer and more transparent ahead of national polls widely expected by mid-2012. The National Front has been in power since independence from Britain in 1957, but opposition gains in recent years have spurred calls for change.

The Bersih coalition of civic groups organizing the rally has voiced hopes of attracting tens of thousands of people for what would be Malaysia's biggest political rally in nearly four years.

Many of the typically bustling commercial districts in downtown Kuala Lumpur were eerily empty Saturday as authorities took extraordinary security measures by blocking numerous roads, closing train stations and deploying trucks mounted with water cannons near the Independence Stadium.

The Kuala Lumpur police force said in a statement that it had detained 338 people in a clampdown called "Operation Erase Bersih." Many were held at public areas where they gathered to start their walk to the stadium.

"The public is reminded not to be involved in any demonstration," the federal police force said in a separate statement. "Stern action will be taken against those who disobey."

Numerous restaurants and stores announced they were closed Saturday because of the transportation disruptions and fears of violence. Riot police armed with batons have dispersed opposition rallies in previous years by firing tear gas and chemical-laced water at crowds.

Najib and other government officials have declared the rally illegal and accused opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's three-party alliance of endorsing it to cause chaos on the streets and undermine the National Front.

Over the past two weeks, more than 200 other activists have been arrested nationwide for trying to promote the rally. Six are being held under security laws that allow indefinite detention without trial. Most of the others were eventually released, but some were charged with laws banning activities linked to illegal assemblies. They face several years in prison if convicted.

The activists' demands include an overhaul of voter registration lists, tougher measures to curb fraud and fairer opportunities for opposition politicians to campaign in government-linked media. The National Front's mandate expires in mid-2013 but many analysts expect elections to be called by next year.

Supporters of the Bersih coalition were also planning solidarity marches over the weekend in foreign cities, including in Australia, Britain, France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and the United States.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that the U.S. has been communicating to Malaysia the importance of respecting human rights, including freedom of expression and assembly.

"We consider it incumbent on all sides to refrain from violence, particularly if we're going to have another rally tomorrow," she told a news conference Friday.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — While the police intensify efforts to stop Bersih 2.0 supporters from gathering here this morning, Malaysians across globe have already begun to rally in support of free and fair elections.

According to eyewitness accounts from Melbourne, Australia, some 750 marchers brandishing banners and placards in Bersih 2.0’s signature yellow have gathered at Federation Square to call for electoral reforms in Malaysia.

In Wellington, New Zealand, a group of about 10 people reportedly stood together while encouraging passing cars to honk their horns to indicate support.

At Bersih 2.0 New Zealand’s Facebook fan page, it was reported that a mini rally was held at the University of Canterbury.

About five hours ago, a supporter posted details on the various gatherings in New Zealand, calling on participants to meet at a car park in Church Corner, Christchurch; the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington; Morgan Street, Newmarket, in Auckland; and Royal Oat Mall, also in Auckland at a different time.

Bersih 2.0, a Malaysian-based coalition comprising 62 non-governmental organisations, have called on all Malaysians across the globe to participate in today’s rally, which is expected to attract tens of thousands of people to the city centre here.

Malaysians living in at least 24 cities in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Switzerland, Sweden, France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the US are expected to take part in the rally, which could notably turn into Malaysia’s largest movement to date.

Legends

The lake offers tranquil and peaceful surroundings steeped in myths and legends that have remained unexplained to this day. According to an Orang Asli legend, the lake is inhabited by a dragon called the Naga Seri Gumum (sometimes referred to as "Malaysia's Loch Ness Monster"). It is believed to contain an ancient sunken Khmer city at the bottom of the lake.

Cambodia looks to M’sia on ICT development

KUALA LUMPUR: Cambodia is keen to learn from Malaysia in the fields of cyberlaw, cybersecurity, e-commerce and e-government.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr Sok An said this when he met with Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili in Phnom Penh yesterday.

According to a statement issued by Dr Ongkili’s office yesterday, Cambodia, which joined Asean in 1999, is seen as new to ICT development, and the country holds high regards for Malaysia in this area.

“The country looks forward to gaining benefits from its Asean membership and working with its neighbours,” it said.

Dr Ongkili was in Phnom Penh, leading a week-long specialised ICT trade mission to Indochina which also covers Hanoi (Vietnam) and Vientiane (Laos).

While in Phnom Penh, Dr Ongkili also met Cambodian Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh.

Malaysia was Cambodia’s top investor and trade partner in the early 1990s before the economic crisis hit the region. — Bernama

Australia has officially signed its long-awaited asylum seeker deal with Malaysia, a move Prime Minister Julia Gillard says will "smash the business model of people smugglers".

Malaysia will have the right to veto any asylum seekers Australia wishes to relocate there under the terms of the refugee agreement signed in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

The swap deal, first announced by Ms Gillard and Immigration Minister Chris Bowen nearly three months ago, means Australia will send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia and accept 4,000 verified refugees in return.

Key points of the agreement:

Those sent to Malaysia will be given rights to work, health care and education, unlike the 90,000 refugees already there
Asylum seekers already on Christmas Island will be processed in Australia, but any arrivals from midnight tonight will come under the new arrangement
Once the scheme is fully up and running, they will be transferred to Malaysia within 72 hours
Transferred asylum seekers will receive no preferential treatment in the processing of their claims

Ms Gillard says it is designed to send a message that asylum seekers should not risk their lives in the hope of having their claims processed in Australia.

"This is a ground-breaking agreement which is designed to smash the business model of people smugglers," she said.

"My message to anyone who is considering paying money to a people smuggler and risking their life at sea and perhaps the lives of their family members as well, is do not do that in the false hope that you will be able to have your claim processed in Australia."

Australia will pay for all costs - around $300 million over four years - including transport, welfare, health and education.

The Prime Minister also confirmed the 4,000 refugees coming to Australia would be taken from those in Malaysia before the agreement and would not include any of the 800 asylum seekers sent from Australia.

"As part of this agreement, Australia will take 4,000 genuine refugees from Malaysia... they will be people who have been registered in Malaysia by today," she said.

However the 500 asylum seekers on Christmas Island who arrived after the Government announced the swap deal will be processed in Australia, not offshore as pledged.

In order to discourage asylum seekers from making the dangerous trip, the Government has repeatedly said those asylum seekers would be taken to a third country such as Papua New Guinea and not processed in Australia.

The policy appears to have worked to an extent, with the number of boats decreasing from the same period last year and asylum seeker numbers down from 1,700 to 500.

But Ms Gillard says the decision to process on the mainland was taken in light of the health concerns PNG prime minister Sir Michael Somare is facing.
Concerns

She says the agreement addresses concerns held by Australian officials that the 90,000 asylum seekers already in Malaysia do not have access to health and education services.

Ms Gillard says asylum seekers will be allowed to work and integrated into the community.

"Those sent to Malaysia will be treated with dignity and respect in accordance with human rights," she said.

"They will not be subject to any of the penalties imposed on illegal entrants - that means they will not be arrested and will not be caned.

"To ensure the welfare of the asylum seekers transferred, there will be an overseeing committee that will include members of the UNHCR."

Refugee activists have warned asylum seekers faced caning and other rights abuses in Malaysia should they be in breach of local laws.

It has also been reported that Malaysian police will have the authority to force asylum seekers off the aircraft that carry them to Kuala Lumpur.

Management and funding of the deal will be administered by a joint Australia-Malaysia committee and an advisory group from the UNHCR and the International Organisation for Migration will oversee the program.

The UNHCR in a statement "noted" the agreement, saying its preference had always been an arrangement which would enable all asylum seekers arriving by boat into Australian territory to be processed in Australia.

But it said the agreement did contain important safeguards like the right of asylum, the principle of family unity and best interests of the child and access to health care and work.

The deal was signed by Mr Bowen and Malaysian home minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein.

Everything is so spread out in KL, the good thing is roads and public transportation are very efficient I believe by looking at the pics

Wow Kuala Lumpur is a realy well City , it has much Green Places in the City.
Much Tree's and Parks unlike other Cities. Phnom Penh should learn from Kuala Lumpur , much Parks and beautiful Green places that makes a city realy pretty ^.^

UPSI To Build School For Champa Malay Muslims In Cambodia

KOTA BAHARU, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) (www.upsi.edu.my/) Tanjong Malim, Perak will assist in the construction of a school for Champa Malay Muslims in Cambodia.

Its chairman Tan Sri Abi Musa Asa'ari Mohamed Nor said the decision was made during the university management committee's recent visit to Cambodia, a country torn by civil war.

Abu Musa who is also Pilgrims Management Fund Board chairman said UPSI sympathised with the Champa Malay Muslim community in Cambodia as most of them are poor.

"They expect sympathy and assistance from foreign countries including Malaysia. Thus, UPSI agreed to assist in building a school in the the village," he told Bernama today.

Construction of the school in Kampongcham was estimated at RM180,000 while expertise in primary education will also be provided.

Abi Musa said a group of teachers from a school in the village were brought to Kuala Lumpur to enable them to educate primary school students back in Cambodia.

"The programme is held in cooperation with Proton in Tanjong Malim. UPSI will monitor the programme to ensure it meets the objective and target group for the sake of humanity," he added.

Another big residential skyline in Malaysia

PENANG - 2nd largest metropolis


^^ Penang's skyscrapers are mainly residential, it lacks the office buildings. If not, it could have been a mini Hong Kong. However, except Penang Island, in most parts of Malaysia, residential buildings are normally landed terrace houses.

The reason to that is simple, because most people in Penang work at its Electronics Factory, and not in Financial/Corporate Offices. That's why it is nicknamed "Silicon Island". And Penang Island has limited land for big housing estate, thus it goes upwards.

But I guess things are about to change in the next decade, as more commercial skyscrapers are now being planned and constructed. The retail market is also getting more diversed as more shopping malls and tourism facilities are being built.

I believe the skyline will continue to stretch to other parts of the Island (especially Gurney area) as the main area - Georgetown is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means it does not allow any skyscrapers there.

It is worth noting that Penang was once the host of Asia's tallest building - the KOMTAR - during 1985, before being topped out by a building in Tokyo and Seoul during the same year. :)

International architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan has delivered the concept master plan for the GCD Media Village in Medini, Malaysia, which will support the new Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, a circa $130m film and television production facility project which is expected to create over 3,000 jobs.

GCD Media Village will provide a home and catalyst for creative industries in the region as well support services for the future regional film industry, and it will be located in close proximity to the Medini Business District, which the practice is also masterplanning to create a series of new specialist business clusters.

The practice has also just completed the concept masterplan for the wider Medini project, which will create a series of mixed-use communities over a 1,000 hectare area, with new residential communities and resort hotels planned in Medini Living, the southern-most development zone in Medini, to maximise the hilly topography and views over the protected mangroves.

The practice’s team has delivered the masterplans for client Global Capital & Development, and has drawn inspiration from the surrounding landscape, which includes one of the largest areas of mangroves in South East Asia, and a beautiful waterfront.

Director of Masterplanning Ed Baker said: “The delivery of the masterplans is testament to close partnering with the client and wider project team, as well as the world-class skills, expertise and experience of our diverse team of expert masterplanners, architects and landscape architects.They will result in the delivery of a sustainable business community, and maximise connections with key catalyst projects already underway in the area, including the new Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, the University of Newcastle’s new medical campus, and future transport infrastructure.”

The Medini project is part of the larger Iskandar development plan, one of the Malaysian government’s key flagship projects covering an area of over 2,217 sq km and equivalent to three times the size of Singapore. The projects are being led by the practice’s Singapore-based team, which is currently celebrating a series of major project wins in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, as well as across the wider Southeast region.

YANGON: Felda, with two estates in Indonesia, is considering an offer to open estates in Cambodia.

Its Chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Isa Abdul Samad said Felda management was currently negotiating with the Cambodian authorities following an offer to develop 160,000 hectares (400,000 acres) land as estates in that country.

He said the Federal Land Development Authority has been provided with the necessary documents, relevant details and study findings of Malaysian organisations for consideration.

"I believe we will study the offer as it is a good opportunity," he told Bernama.

Mohamed Isa said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, duiring his visit to Malaysia, had suggested to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that Felda run estates in Cambodia.

He said Felda would study crop suitability either oil palm or other crops to be planted in the estates.

One of Felda's estates in Indonesia is a joint venture with Pilgrims Management and Fund Board (Tabung Haji) while the other with a local company.

Mohamed Isa said Felda was also working to expand its product sales worldwide.

"For instance, we've a factory in Turkey to penetrate the Eastern Europe market," he said, adding that Felda was also taking measures to enter the African market.

He, however, did not elaborate on plans to expand to the African continent.

Luxury brands are coming to Malaysia to invest following the government's announcement on the abolition of import duty on about 300 luxury items with effect from January next year, YTL Corp Bhd managing director Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeo said.

He said watch makers and artisans are already capitalising on this duty-free status as they are greatly impressed by the new potential of Malaysia as a luxury shopping haven.

"We now house the world's first stand-alone Hermes Horloger boutique, a French icon".

Maybank opens 11th branch in Cambodia

Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) has opened a new branch at Stung Meanchey, in Phnom Penh, to expand its network in Cambodia to 11.

Its Deputy President and Head of Global Wholesale Banking, Abdul Farid Alias said the opening of the Stung Meanchey branch, was timed to capture the medium and long-term growth in the country.

"Cambodia's economy is poised for a more than six per cent growth next year.

"The demand for financial sector products as well as services, has been increasing in the last few years, and is expected to continue in tandem with this economic growth," he said in a statement here today.

Abdul Farid added that Maybank will open at least one more branch in Cambodia to further expand its network in 2012.

Over the 12 months to October 2011, Abdul Farid noted that Maybank Cambodia had registered a 75.2 per cent growth in loans and advances, with four per cent growth for customer deposits.

Maybank is also pursuing a key initiative of applying for a local
incorporation licence from the National Bank of Cambodia.

This is to reflect Maybank's long-term commitment to that country and its standing as a regional bank.

Meanwhile, the new branch provides a full range of banking services, including trade finance, global automated teller machines (ATM) and loans to meet the financial and banking requirements of new and existing customers. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s home-grown franchise Secret Recipe Cakes & Cafe is aiming to open six outlets in Cambodia and 10 in India by end-2013.

The first cafe in Phnom Penh, Cambodia is targeted to open its doors next April while the business in India is due to start in the third quarter of 2012, after Secret Recipe has secured master franchisees in Cambodia and Southern India.

The franchise signing ceremony with Secret Recipe Restaurants India Pvt Ltd and and Faba Global Group Co Ltd (Cambodia) at Menara Matrade on Monday was witnessed by Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

Mukhriz said this was a boost in encouraging local brands and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) to take similar paths.

“The Malaysian franchise industry currently contributes about 6% to our country’s retail sector revenue, while in the United States and Australia, franchises contribute more than 50%. Therefore, there is great potential and room for growth in this sector locally,” said Mukhriz.

Secret Recipe Restaurants India director Chelikam Rajashekara Reddy said the first outlet in southern India would be opened in Bangalore.

“Bangalore is a prosperous IT (information technology) capital where the demands of such modern cafes are increasingly popular among the middle-class.”

Secret Recipe Cakes & Cafe Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Steven Sim said demand for such cafes was increasing in India and Cambodia due to emerging population landscape and lifestyles.

Very few Malaysian restaurants here and the food are quite expensive

I'm not sure if you guys have already posted, I wonder if anybody has a picture of the new federal capital city near Kuala Lampur. I think it is called Putrajaya (?).

KUALA LUMPUR: The ERL train extension from KLIA to KLIA2 will be ready by October this year, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

"The train journey between KLIA and KLIA2 will take about three minutes. The extension will likely see the volume of ERL passengers doubling," he added.

The ERL services, which include the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, carry about four to five million passengers every year.

Kong said the project to extend the line to the new low-cost carrier terminal totalled up to RM100mil.

"The project is currently running smoothly and about 25% complete. It is scheduled be ready by Oct 31 this year while the KLIA2's construction is expected to be completed in April 2013," he told reporters after visiting the construction site of the proposed rail extension here Thursday.

He added that the extension was necessary in line with the development of the new terminal as it will enable passengers from KL Sentral to reach the KLIA and KLIA2.

"I hope that when KLIA2 is in full swing, we will be able to make ERL services available 24 hours a day to cater to flight arrivals in the wee hours of the morning," he said.

Currently, ERL services run for 21 hours a day, taking a break between 1am and 4am.

Kong also commended the ERL services for achieving "on-time" performance of 99.83%.

The project to extend the ERL line started in July last year and covers 2.14km.

In 2010, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced plans to build the KLIA2, the world's first mega terminal for low-cost carriers.

He said it was expected to boost the nation's tourism industry by attracting more airlines and visitors.

Something that just opened recently in downtown KL.

With our uneven, tree-rooted pathways, I believe KL is way behind Singapore, Makati and Bangkok in its pedestrianised walkways. So I hope this is a good start. Air-conditioned and open walkways, and eventually to most parts of KL and not forgotting the new pathways that can ensure better security from motorists.

For the matter of aesthetic, it is due to the fact that they used the off-the-shelf model of Desiro used for Heatrow ... so the model is quite old ...

Yah, the banging noise when the doors shut is considered as the most annoying element of airport express/airport city line train.

However, PT men who run MOT are now planning to apply 20 Baht flat rate for the off-peak period to get more passengers and fulfill populist policies which really make me sick and nausea ... since the trains is crowding even after using 15-45 Baht rate for Airport City line.

I'm actually going to Cambodia on December 21, 2012 to see Angkor Wat and I think I will go to Malaysia for a few days or more depend on my budget. I really really wanna see Kuala lumpur. Here, thing is a bit more expensive than Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, but cheaper than Singapore in general. The best place to stay, if money is not a concern, is the Traders Hotel (where I say when I visit there). You can see the Petronas Twin Towers across the park from your window. It is a 3-5 minutes walk, but it you like you can get a ride there free of charge from the hotel. Suria KLCC Mall is a place that you can find good food to eat. Check out Madam Kwan restaurant there for good Malaysian food (reasonable price). Bukit-Pintang area near by is also a good place to shop and eat. You can take the KLCC-Bukit Pintang walkway (see in the pictures here http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=88273833&postcount=172) to go there by going through the Convention Center. If you like nature, you can go to visit Bird net Garden, the largest bird net maybe in the world. Your former president Clinton visited there.

If you are really serious of going there from Cambodia, you should check out AsiaAir website. Time to time it has sales and you can fly Phnom Penh - Kuala Lumpur only US$20 or less depending on days of the week.

Malaysia is more developed than Thailand in general (higer GDP per capita)

You can choose any hotels near Petronas Tower. It is close to all the major shopping and dining places, very convenient for walking and sightseeing around

Malacca looks beautiful.

Here, thing is a bit more expensive than Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, but cheaper than Singapore in general. The best place to stay, if money is not a concern, is the Traders Hotel (where I say when I visit there). You can see the Petronas Twin Towers across the park from your window. It is a 3-5 minutes walk, but it you like you can get a ride there free of charge from the hotel. Suria KLCC Mall is a place that you can find good food to eat. Check out Madam Kwan restaurant there for good Malaysian food (reasonable price). Bukit-Pintang area near by is also a good place to shop and eat. You can take the KLCC-Bukit Pintang walkway (see in the pictures here http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=88273833&postcount=172) to go there by going through the Convention Center. If you like nature, you can go to visit Bird net Garden, the largest bird net maybe in the world. Your former president Clinton visited there.

If you are really serious of going there from Cambodia, you should check out AsiaAir website. Time to time it has sales and you can fly Phnom Penh - Kuala Lumpur only US$20 or less depending on days of the week.

^^ I was gonna stop at singapore but Malaysia looks more better and diverse. I always wanna see the twin tower because it sort of looks like a high tech angkor wat tower! :lol:

In america the suburb houses are spread apart from each other with privacy.

This is actually a British model - commonly known as Terrace Houses. You'll be surprised that each house is quite spacious, as compared to the ones in UK.

Palm oil from Malaysia sold in Crown Property Bureau Plaza in Songkla gone up right after hearing that the palm oil in Thailand is gone up from 42 Baht per litre to 50 Baht per litre:

1. the retail price: Up from 38.50 Baht per kg to 42 Baht per kg
2. Palm oil sold in 5 kg bottles: from 190 Baht per bottle to 200 Baht per bottle
3. Palm oil in paper box (17 sack - 1 kg per sack): from 610 Baht per box to 635 Baht per bottle

This is due to the more stringent control by Custom Dept to prevent palm oil smuggling

In some places in Canada, they have to same thing, identical, and they are called townhouses. The only difference between those in Malaysia and Canada is the parking. Here, we can underground secure, but common parking whereas in Malaysia each unit has its own parking inside the unit (which I like more).

I think most Malaysians including myself love such suburbs . Home price is lower than downtown, streets are largely freed of serious traffic jam, etc. But the only problem is distance to nearby shops & facility- you usually need to drive few hundred metres to buy your drinks.

My Cambodian friend ( who arrived in Malaysia last year for work ) complained this issue- that he had to walk nearly 20 minutes to buy some simple grocery ( since he has no private vehicle ) . Whereas in virtually any places in Cambodian cities you can find grocery right at doorstep.

It really depends on the building materials, and how fast fire brigade can attend the scene. With modern fire resistive materials, fire don't usually spread very fast. But I agree, the risk is higher if housing in too close to each.

I think he was referring to the design of each development project, which could be anywhere from 5 units to possible 100+ units, and the design will be identical, or very similar theme with those expensive one.

People must got a serious medical problem if they find a few hundred meters a problem.

If your friend has no private vehicle, he should find a places closer to the markets, or get a bike.

I hate to live right next to a shops, I don't like to have too many unknown people wondering outside my places. Problem with virtually any places in Cambodia, is you can set up a business anywhere you want, you could buy a property in a "Borey" complex, and you will find the neighbours still run business in the area.

500m away from all shops/business will be perfect for me.

Yah ... for old suburbs within BMA (Bangkok, Thonburi), Lad Phrao, bang Kapi, Minburi, Samrong, Pra Padaeng, Nonthaburi City, Pak Nam City, Rangsit City, Pakkret City ...

The traffic even gone worse in Sri Nakharin (from Bang Kapi to Pak Nam), Lam Lookka due to the even more shortage of good BMTA buses - ONLY private run buses or minibuses run at higher prices ...

STRENGTHENING FOOTHOLD: Bank now ranked seventh in terms of assets among 33 banks operating in the kingdom

MALAYAN Banking Bhd (Maybank) aims to be among the top five banks in Cambodia by 2015.

Having opened its first branch there in 1993, Maybank now has 11 branches and is currently ranked seventh in terms of assets among 33 banks operating in the kingdom.

Maybank is building a 10-storey building in Phnom Penh as its corporate head office. The building is expected to be ready in 2014.

In addition, Maybank has developed an automated-teller machine (ATM) network, which is inter-linked in the country and regionally across Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. This means cardholders in Cambodia enjoy local cash withdrawal facilities at no cost.

Last month, Maybank received a local incorporation licence from the central bank there.

Following this, Maybank has set up Maybank (Cambodia) plc and raised capital from US$30 million to US$50 million (RM91.8 million to RM153 million). This means the bank can operate at a comfortable capital adequacy ratio above 12 per cent, while maintaining an aggressive growth strategy in the years ahead.

The launch of the new locally-incorporated company was officiated by the governor of the National Bank of Cambodia Dr Chea Chanto, witnessed by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, at an event in conjunction with the 9th Asean Leadership Forum held in Phnom Penh yesterday.

Maybank president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said the local incorporation will provide Maybank greater opportunities to expand its branch network in Cambodia.

"We are optimistic about growth prospects in Cambodia, especially in the retail segment," he said.

Maybank Cambodia has seen its assets and deposits doubling in the last four years. Total assets rose from US$129 million (RM395 million) in June 2007 to US$313 million (RM958 million) in December 2011, while deposits increased from US$100 million to US$231 million (RM306 million to RM707 million).

Loans expanded almost sixfold from US$30 million to US$168 million (RM108 million to RM514 million).

Revenue in June 2011, meanwhile stood at US$10.2 million (RM31 million) from US$0.45 million (RM1.4 million) in June 2007 while pre-tax profit for the same period rose to US$8.4 million (RM26 million) from US$0.38 million (RM1.2 million) previously.

In the six months to December 2011, revenue reached US$12.8 million (RM39 million), while pre-tax profit was US$4.47 million (RM14 million.

Maybank had initially operated in Cambodia on a wholesale banking business model with a single branch, serving mainly home-based customers doing business in the country.

In 2008, this changed to a commercial banking business model to meet the growing demand of local enterprises and individuals.

"We will soon be introducing Internet banking, agriculture loans as well as more modules of TradeConnex," said Wahid.

PETALING JAYA: Malayan Banking Bhd's (Maybank) Cambodian operations have received a local incorporation licence from the National Bank of Cambodia.

The bank, to be known as Maybank (Cambodia) Plc, will see its capital raised from US$30mil (RM91.98mil) to US$50mil (RM153.3mil) and has set its sights on being among the country's top five banks by 2015.

There is an empty lot along Norodom between Central bank and Independent Monument. It has been empty for maybe a decade or more. It is at the corner of 172 (or Oknha Ket) and Norodom. It is near Secretariat of State Civil Aviation and former war museum (now hospital?). I can still see it from space on Google Earth.

In late 2010, they only sold Carrefour Thailand to Casino Group.

In 2011, they have decided to stay back in Malaysia and Singapore with more expansion plans on the way.
