With just a month-and-a-half to go, Zululand officials say they are on track to have scheduled flights operating at Ulundi’s Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Airport.
ECR Newswatch has been speaking to Mayor Blessed Gwala about the estimated R80-million project, which will see flights from Ulundi to Durban and Pietermaritzburg leave the runway.
It is hoped they will be able to offer flights between Ulundi and Jo'burg in the future.
Gwala says their latest task was purchasing a GPS system from overseas, which will allow pilots to locate the airport when preparing to land during poor weather.
He says though that aviation officials need to activate the system before it can be used.
Gwala says they have sent a request to the Civil Aviation Authority about the matter.
"According to our plan, we are ready. But we can't force the Aviation Authority to come down because they have to come with their own plane, so that they can set it correctly and then they will be able to say it is now fine. So, we have already sent a request and we are waiting for them to come."
Gwala says they are hopeful that the flights will play a major role in stimulating economic growth in the Zululand District Municipality.
"Once we have started, I will be very happy because our dream will be fulfilled."
