That's the roof of Stadium Negara. The indoor stadium was bulit in 1962 but the original roof was replaced with a domed one in the 80's. ;)

The other stadium in the picture is the 'nearly demolished' Stadium Merdeka.

Menara KL - A Towering Achievement

http://www.kiat.net/malaysia/images/menarakl.gif

Amidst the city of Kuala Lumpur stands the
Menara Kuala Lumpur at 515m above sea level.
Majestically poised at a breathtaking height of 421 metres, the Tower doubles as Kuala Lumpur's best known ambassador.

Situated atop Bukit Nanas at 94m above sea level, it is on higher ground than the Twin Towers of Kuala Lumpur. Menara Kuala Lumpur was constructed as a telecommunications tower to upgrade the quality of telecommunications and the clarity of broadcast transmissions. Undoubtedly, Menara Kuala Lumpur marks the start of a milestone in the telecommunications arena.

http://www.kiat.net/malaysia/images/kltower10.jpg

Menara Kuala Lumpur is one of the tallest concrete towers in the world, standing at 421m and built with 45,000 cubic metres of sturdy concrete. Designed with vertical ribs on the
external surface, the Tower weighs 100,000 tonnes and was built on no-piling, freestanding land. Menara Kuala Lumpur opulently stands as the tallest tower in Southeast Asia.

Menara Kuala Lumpur ranks fourth amongst the tallest telecommunications towers in the world and was constructed over a period of four years and completed in May 1996. Menara Kuala Lumpur is designed to withstand wind pressures
of up to 90mph. Menara Kuala Lumpur is a member of the prestigious World Federation of Great Towers.

http://www.kiat.net/malaysia/images/kltower11.jpg

The four tallest towers in the world are CN Tower in Canada at 553m, Ostankino Tower in Russia at 537m, Shanghai Tower in China at 468m followed by Menara Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia at 421

Has anyone heard Singapore is going to build "London Eye"?
It's very nice....more unit than communication towers

perhaps ..should design one for Putrajaya ...since the 21 renaissance buildings there are all a bit 'low-rice'....so malaysian could have the best of 'both' world

They should have more communications towers of this type in Malaysia, something like Germany (almost every city has these antenna towers!)...

Suggested cities include Penang, JB (the two big ones after KL), Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuantan... Not forgetting Malacca and Ipoh...

Free shuttle service to KL Tower

Dec 21:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KUALA LUMPUR: The newly-launched Menara Mobile shuttle bus service will mark another attraction for tourists to visit the KL Tower.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said with the service, he is confident that more tourists, especially foreigners, would visit the tower.

He was speaking to reporters at the launch of the service yesterday.

The service, which is free of charge, starts today and will pick up visitors from 18 participating hotels in the city’s ‘golden triangle’.

The shuttle starts at 9.30am and ends at 8.20pm daily.

Ahmad Zahid also urged more hotels to take part as they can use the service to boost occupancy.

“This is a golden opportunity to them. The tower has been frequented by eight million visitors so far. The hotels can use the service to attract guests,” he said.

Also present were KL Tower’s chief executive officer Zulkifli Mohamad and representatives of the participating hotels.

Meanwhile, several tourists viewed the service as a practical move.

“I think it is a good option for hotel guests to visit the KL Tower. Plus, they don’t have to pay for the taxi ride or other public transport,“ said 17-year-old Steph Hughes from Scotland.

Vicci George, 16, from England chipped in: “Although I prefer walking, the service is very convenient to tourists like me. We are assured of hassle-free transportation to the Tower.”

Y. Tamura, 64, of Japan said: “The shuttle is practical as we don’t have to worry about getting lost somewhere in the city. I suggest that the management do a bit of publicity so that everyone knows about the service.”

KL Tower Launches Cultural Unit To Woo Tourists
July 14, 2005 21:25 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd on Thursday launched the Menara Kuala Lumpur Cultural Unit to attract more local and foreign tourists to visit the Kuala Lumpur Tower.

Its chief executive, Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said the formation of the Cultural Unit, which would conduct performances on traditional music and dances, was timely to turn the tower into a one-stop centre for tourists to have a closer look at the multi-racial Malaysian society.

The unit, known as the Menara Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Group, would put up its maiden presentation on July 21 for visitors on the first floor of the tower, he told a press conference here.

Various types of traditional dances such as the Tarian Asyik, Zapin, Portuguese Dance, Joget, and Ngiluk to the accompaniment of traditional and ethnic music would be put up for visitors, especially foreign tourists.

Initially, the cultural performances would be free of charge to visitors beginning July 21 until July 31 on Thursday till Sunday at 11 am and 4 pm.

Subsequently, visitors can watch the performances at the Open Theatre on the first floor with tickets priced at RM15 for adults and RM9 for children.

Cultural treat at Menara KL
By THOMAS HUONG
Friday July 22, 2005

UNTIL the end of July, visitors to Menara Kuala Lumpur will be able to enjoy dance and music performances by the Menara Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Group.

The 36-member group comprises singers, dancers and musicians who perform a mix of traditional and ethnic music and dances as well as more contemporary numbers.

Menara Kuala Lumpur chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said the group could also perform at product launches, dinner functions and school holiday programmes.

He added that the group would help introduce Malaysian culture to foreign tourists and serve as an added attraction to the tower.

“Future plans include having the group teach foreign tourists some simple steps from ethnic Malaysian dances,” said Zulkifli.

He also claimed that Menara Kuala Lumpur was the only tower in the world that showcases the cultures of its country.

The Menara Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Group will perform at 11am and 4pm every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the tower’s amphitheatre.

The performances will range from ethnic music and “strollers” to Asyik, Zapin, Portuguese, Joget and Ngiluk dances.

After July 31, visitors can watch the performances by buying tickets, priced at RM15 (adult) and RM9 (children), to the tower’s Observation Deck.

Menara Kuala Lumpur opens daily from 9am to 10pm. It stands at 421m and is located at No 2, Jalan Punchak, off Jalan P. Ramlee, Kuala Lumpur. For details, visit www.menarakl.com.my.

53 daredevils to take off from tower

Doing some flips before getting
the parachute opened.

WITHOUT fail each year, these daredevils leap off the KL Tower, doing flips and other stunts as they go down.

It will be no different this morning from 8am onwards when 53 skydivers from 11 countries leap off the tower for the KL Tower Jump 2005.

KL Tower public relations and event department senior manager Anita Kushairy said three areas would be closed so that the skydivers could conduct their stunts. “They are the tower’s bus parking area, the tower’s runway strip and the open field, belonging to PUAS Bhd.

Skydivers from United States, Australia, England, Germany, India, Finland, Norway, Singapore, Mexico, New Zealand and Malaysia are participating in the event.

The skydivers went through a trial jump yesterday morning to get a feel of the place.

“Haste makes paste,” said Johnny Winkelkotter as he and friend Paul Phegan practised a double stunt that had them holding hands and jumping off together.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/10/1/central/m_p1jumper.jpg

As both men jumped, they let go of each other’s arms and crossed their right leg, counted four seconds and parted away to open their parachutes.

Johnny, from Utah, USA, said this was the fourth time that he had been to Malaysia for the jump.

“I love the country,’’ he said. “Kuala Lumpur, in particular, is a beautiful city and has some of the best, tall buildings to jump off from,” he said.

Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf will launch the event at 10.30am.

Other activities for the morning include a light aircraft fly past, helicopter roping, radio controlled aircraft displays and gliding exhibitions.

The event is to help Malaysia Down Syndrome Association raise funds and increase awareness of the disease.

104 years old Jelutong Tree besides the KL Tower

This rare Jelutong Tree ( Dyera Costulata ) is 95 years old. To conserve it the position of the Tower was shifted to avoid the tree, and a series of the soldier piles was installed as a retaining wall during the foundation excavation period to prevent the tree from topping. The conservation of the tree by perceptive planning and construction methods, incurring a total cost of Rm 430,000.00 permits this natural rarity to be enjoyed by yhe future generations. - Dated 1996

KL Tower to host festival
Saturday January 7, 2006

PONGGAL, a 5,000-year-old Tamil harvest tradition, will be celebrated in true Malaysian style at Kuala Lumpur Tower on Jan 14.

Organising chairman P. Kamalanathan said they had set a target of 500 people cooking the traditional ponggal (sweetened rice) at the base of KL Tower, moving away from the traditional location in Rawang.

“We made the decision to choose KL Tower as it was the best place to attract Malaysians as well as foreign tourists,” he explained.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/7/central/p18Saravanan.jpg

Federal Territory MIC secretary M. Saravanan (centre) pouring the milk while
KL Tower public relations and events senior manager Anita Kushairy adds the
rice as Kamalanathan (second from right) looks on.

“Besides cooking the rice, there will also be exhibitions and a Malaysian cultural performance for the visitors,” he said.

Kamalanathan said there were also discussions to organise a Ponggal at the highest level of KL Tower, which is 1,400m above sea level.

“If we get the green light, it will be a rare achievement,” he said.

Kamalanathan said more than 5,000 people were expected to be present at KL Tower to witness the festival organised by Malaysian Indian Fest and MIC Youth, with Serba Wangi Sdn Bhd were donating the Jati rice.

He said that similar ponggal programmes would be celebrated in Serdang, Jelebu, Bandar Muadzam Shah, Kuala Terengganu, Petaling Jaya and Alor Setar .

Experience zero gravity at KL Tower
Sunday February 26, 2006

KUALA LUMPUR: It's the hottest ride in town. You can now get the chance to experience what an astronaut feels when he is shot into space; with KL Tower's newest attraction, the “G Force X.”

For RM60, you can try the “reverse bungy” where you will be strapped into a capsule attached to cables and then catapulted into the sky.

“It’s like being in a rocket and blasted into outer space. It is definitely one of the best anti-gravity machines on the planet,” AJ Hackett Malaysia managing director Adam Quinn said.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/2/26/nation/n_p4tower.jpg

UP, UP AND AWAY: The KL Tower’s reverse bungy gives you a
chance to feel like an astronaut without leaving Earth.

AJ Hackett is renowned for operating bungy jumps and other related facilities around the world.

The G Force X is the highest reverse bungy facility in Asia.

When the capsule is shot into the air, it travels up to 120kph in two seconds and a person can experience five times the force of gravity.

At the top, he will get a feeling of weightlessness for a short while, similar to what astronauts feel.

Menara Kuala Lumpur chairman Tan Sri Md Radzi Mansor, who launched the tower's newest attraction yesterday, said it was an adrenaline-pumping experience after trying it himself.

Md Radzi said the G Force X was the first of several attractions for KL Tower.

In the works are the flying fox, Mast Climb (where a person climbs up to the antenna at the top of the tower), Skywalk X (where a person walks around the tower on an outside platform while strapped to a harness) and finally, the Sky Jump.

The Sky Jump, expected to open in August, is a freefall, similar to a bungy jump, from the tower.

KL Tower's Sky Jump at 421m will be the highest in the world, 188m higher that the current record holder - Macau Tower.

The G Force X is open every day, from 11am to 7pm on weekdays, and from 10am to 8pm on weekends.

Blast off!

FASTER than the F1 – so goes the tagline for KL Tower’s latest attraction. Reaching a speed of 120km/hour in two seconds as claimed, they’re surely not pulling a fast one. And it’s courtesy of the world famous AJ Hackett operations – the company started by the man credited with the first “modern” bungy jump. Of course, if you know the history, it was the natives of Papua New Guinea who jumped off a wooden tower with just vines tied to their feet as their “reaching manhood” ritual.

The contraption at the tower area is not a bungy, but kind of a “reverse” bungy or a slingshot that the operator, AJ Hackett Malaysia, calls the G Force X.

AJ Hackett Malaysia general manager Adam Quinn explains that cables are attached to a capsule where two people are securely strapped into plush seats and then the cables are winched, stretched and released to launch the capsule “into space”. The riders can experience a force equivalent to five times the force of gravity.

You can enjoy the high-flying experience for an introductory price of RM60 per person. Who needs to be an astronaut or pay millions to be a space tourist when you can feel like one riding the G Force X.

You reach heights of 65m, which makes this the highest such ride in Asia. And you need to sign a disclaimer form (which absolves the operator from any claims). But does this mean that there is a possibility of error?

Quinn claims they have had a 100% safety record in their operations worldwide. They have third party insurance where, for instance, if a part comes loose and hits the rider the insurance company will take care of any claims but in the same breath Quinn says they have never encountered this.

“We are very careful with safety procedures and do regular maintenance and checks. We used to change the wire cables after every 12,000 ‘shots’; now we change it after only 8,000 ‘shots’. There is a counter on the machine that records every shot, so it is very exact,” points out Quinn.

If you’re pregnant, then you have to pay double! That was Quinn’s little joke and he quickly clarified that there were restrictions on who could go for the ride. You have to be at least 13 years old with a minimum height of 137cm. If you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, suffer from epilepsy, have a nervous condition or heart condition, or other medical conditions that might interfere with the ride, then you don’t get to have lift-off.

There’s a camera attached to the capsule so you can have a video of your ride, for a fee of course. Later on, the company will offer a DVD-burning service and photographs (again for a fee).

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2006/3/3/lifeliving/27cap2.jpg

The contraption is mobile, so they can take it to any location they like. The one at KL Tower was brought in from Germany and is the latest model. Though the machine can be taken apart, it will be stationed at KL Tower on a long-term basis.

“This is part of efforts to attract tourists to visit us and also help the government’s efforts to increase revenue in the tourism sector,” says Menara Kuala Lumpur chairman Tan Sri Md Radzi Mansor, who launched the ride last Saturday and experienced the “trip” with Menara Kuala Lumpur chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad.

Zulkifli says the arrangement they have with AJ Hackett involved some form of technology transfer, as the locals would eventually be trained to run the operations. Quinn clarifies that they have already trained some locals but their policy is to always have one international staff in place even when the locals can take over completely.

Coming next this month is the “flying fox” (where a person is winched down on an inclined 100-metre-long rope) and Mast Climb (climbing up the communications antenna at the top of the tower while attached to a safety harness). Following this, in May, will be the Skywalk X (where a person walks on a platform that will be built outside the viewing deck while being harnessed).

Finally in August, if all goes well, the Sky Jump will be introduced – this involves a person jumping from the top of the tower while attached to a rope. It’s more or less a freefall, but just when you think you are going to go splat on the ground, you will abruptly stop short. It’s not for the faint-hearted.

While Queenstown in New Zealand is acknowledged as the adventure capital of the world, maybe Kuala Lumpur will soon be known as the extreme adventure capital of Asia.

G Force X is open seven days a week (11am to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 8pm on Sundays).

I thought this was really cool, apparently it has a new LED system and they are currently testing it. Any colour combination is possible, each panel can be individually changed.

Base jumpers leap from KL tower

Base jumper leaps off the KL Tower in Malaysia - 24/08/07

Base jumpers have been allowed to dive from the city's highest points
Dozens of people have been marking the start of Malaysia's 50th anniversary celebrations by throwing themselves off one of the country's tallest buildings.

The international base jump from the KL Tower is part of a tour of the country by extreme sports enthusiasts.

Malaysia boasts some of the world's tallest buildings, which are a familiar feature of its urban landscape.

Authorities are proud of the high-rises and generally relaxed about letting thrill-seekers base jump off them.

To honour next week's 50th anniversary of Malaysia winning its independence from Britain, international base jumpers have been allowed to dive from urban highpoints across the country.

This includes sites in the cities of Kuching and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo, and from towers in Alostar, George Town and the capital Kuala Lumpur in West Malaysia.

Three hundred metres up the KL Tower, a telecommunications tower in Kuala Lumpur, I asked one base jumper the obvious question: "Just how crazy do you have to be to jump off a building with just a parachute?"

"You have to be completely sane to jump off a building with a parachute," he replied.

"That's the point. I don't think any of us are really crazy. [We] put a lot of planning into this, think about it and make it as safe as possible."

All that planning is aimed at ensuring this celebration of half a century of Malaysia's high-rise ambitions passes off without any accidents.

KL Tower treats patrons to bubur lambuk
Thursday September 25, 2008
By SUHALIZA SIDEK
TheStar

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/9/25/central/m_p04nasaki.jpg

New experience: Japanese tourist Nasaki Akiyo (right) sniffing the fragrant
ingredients cooking in the pot while his friend Takotoshi is stirring the
porridge as media relations executive, Eliey Sahad looks on

The spicy aroma of mixed garlic and onions filled the air as tourists walked up to the upper ground floor of the Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower).

Held for the fifth year, the KL Tower staff recently cooked the bubur lambuk that is only available during the Ramadan month.

The bubur lambuk was served in two different styles €” one with the special ingredient from KL Tower’s Seri Angkasa restaurant, the cow’s leg bone €” and the vegetarian bubur lambuk.

The bubur lambuk was distributed to 1,000 people who visited the KL Tower that day.

KL Tower also organised a buka puasa session with the media and the Perwira K9.

Perwira K9, also known as The Bravehearts of K9, is a non-governmental organisation that supports people with spinal cord injuries.

On top of the buka puasa meal, KL Tower also donated RM10,000 to The Bravehearts of K9.

“K9 seldom receives donation, so we take this opportunity to donate some money for their expenses,” says General Manager of the Public Relations & Event Department of Menara Kuala Lumpur Mazlan Mahmud.

KL Tower lights up for cancer awareness month
Saturday October 18, 2008

Symbol of hope: KL Tower will be glowing
in pink until the end of this month.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/10/18/central/m_pg20ranjit.jpg

Pretty in pink: (From left) Zulkifli, Noraini, Noriah, Ranjit Kaur and
Loo at the launch of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month at KL Tower.

PINK is the colour of the month at the Kuala Lumpur Tower in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Month.

KL Tower Sdn Bhd in partnership with Estee Lauder Companies will be illuminating the tower in bright pink lights for two weeks from Oct 14 to 31.

The campaign was launched by Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Noriah Kasnon, KL Tower chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad and Estee Lauder Malaysia managing director Loo Kai Nan.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Noraini Ahmad was also present to lend her support for the cause.

The second unique illumination in Malaysia is part of the Estee Lauder Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative.

It is the brainchild of Evelyn Lauder, which focuses attention and spreads awareness about breast cancer and the message of early detection saves lives.

“In Malaysia, breast cancer is the most common overall cancer in women among all races from the age of 20 years onwards,” said Noriah.

“For thousands of women, their greatest fear is the reaction of their husbands, the dilemma of their marriage and family life.

“However, the impact is not only on their lives but also on their families, the community and the country as 47% of women are in the labour force.

“According to the Health Ministry’s National Cancer Registry, the incidence of breast cancer in 2003 was 46.2 for every 100,000 women.

“This means one in every 19 women is at risk of getting breast cancer in her lifetime.

“Findings from the Malaysian Population and Family Life Survey conducted by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) in 2004 shows that only 53.2% of women in this country had ever done clinical breast examination.

“I encourage you to bring any of your loved ones to any of the 50 LPPKN clinics for referral to the nearest mammogram centers,” Noriah urged women.

She also appealed to the private sector and all members of the community to emulate the example set by companies like Estee Lauder.

Zulkifli said KL Tower was the ‘Tower of Hope’ for cancer awareness.

“We are committed to supporting such programmes. We have just installed a new lighting system, which cost us RM4mil.

“KL Tower would like women, and even husbands to be aware of breast cancer.

“There will be talks on breast cancer and free breast cancer medical check up at the tower,” he said.

Zulkifli also said that visitors to the tower clad in pink attire and pink ribbon would get a 50% discount during the awareness campaign.

According to Loo, the illumination of KL Tower was an important landmark in creating awareness.

“The Estee Lauder Companies 2008 BCA campaign message is ‘World Pink, World Without Breast Cancer. Wear a Pink Ribbon. Make a difference’.

“Our message encapsulates the spirit of bringing people together from all walks of life to raise awareness and to find a cure for breast cancer.

“I am proud to share that we have accomplished a lot in Malaysia.

“Each year, our various efforts touch the lives of millions of women and men from all walks of life across Malaysia.

“This year, we hope to raise another RM300,000 from our BCA Charity Golf and from our BCA Gala Dinner.

“The money raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA), National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), the College of Radiology Malaysia and Cancer Research Initiatives Foun-dation (CARIF) .

Loo also thanked KL tower for the great partnership.

The illumination is in its 9th year with hundreds of famous buildings, monuments and landmarks glowing in pink in over 50 countries around the world.

Shining in pink, the world famous monuments have become an international symbol of hope and continue to empower and enlighten millions of women everywhere.

Estee Lauder brands in Malaysia- Aramis, Bobbi Brown, Beauty Bank, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, La Mer, Lab Series Skincare for Men, origins, and Sean John Fragrances will set up information counters, distribute pink ribbons and hand out flyers regarding breast cancer.

Hadir sama, Ketua Pengarah Perhilitan Semenanjung Malaysia, Datuk Abdul Rasid Samsuddin.

View exotic creatures at tourist spot’s newly-launched mini zoo
By CHRISTINA LOW

ANIMALS are now part of the Menara Kuala Lumpur family as the fourth tallest tower in the world now boasts a mini zoo featuring hundreds of exotic animals on its grounds.

The spot, named the KL Tower Animal Zone, houses birds, snakes, python, deer, rabbits, monkeys, ducks, iguanas and even spiders.

Come on in: The Animal Zone is an added attraction to the landmark.

“We don’t do business the common way. We often seek fresh ideas to give our visitors an experience they will never forget,” Menara Kuala Lumpur CEO Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said during the soft launch last week

Zulkifli said as the tower was surrounded by forest in the heart of the city, preserving the area was important as animals like monkeys were still being spotted.

“Over the next five to 10 years, we will be looking at different ways to brand ourselves by working with professionals to spread the knowledge of culture, adventure and nature to our visitors,” Zulkifli said.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/11/20/central/m_pg16ducks.jpg
Colourful: Carolina Wood Ducks from South America are also at home at the zone.

Menara Kuala Lumpur’s other ongoing attractions include Sky Diving, Guided Nature Walks, a Flying Fox by New Zealander A.J Hackett as well as the yearly KL Tower International Base Jumping event.

Zulkifli, who is a big fan of bungy jumping, said for 2009, Menara Kuala Lumpur is hoping to bring sky diving to local and foreign daredevils.

“I have done sky diving in Macau and Auckland, New Zealand. I feel the sport is safe and I am sure many would want to experience it here too,” said Zulkifli.

The KL Tower Animal Zone is introduced with the cooperation of the Wildlife and National Parks Department. Admission is priced at RM10 (Adults) and RM8 (Children).

A 20% discount is available for MyKad holders. Opening hours are from 9am to 10pm daily.

Menarik bukan?

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2008/1124/Kosmo/Rencana_Utama/ru_01.1.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PERTAMA di dunia. Menara Kuala Lumpur (Menara KL) melakar sejarah tersendiri apabila memiliki sebuah mini zoo yang menempatkan pelbagai jenis haiwan eksotik khas buat tatapan pengunjung.

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2008/1124/Kosmo/Rencana_Utama/ru_01.2.jpg

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2008/1124/Kosmo/Rencana_Utama/ru_01.4.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.kosmo.com.my/kosmo/pix/2008/1124/Kosmo/Rencana_Utama/ru_01.5.jpg

Muhammad Radzi Mansor.

Menara KL sasar 1.2 juta pengunjung
Oleh Sharifah Salwa Syed Akil
inasalwa@bharian.com.my

World’s largest eco bag unveiled
By PRIYA MENON

THE world’s largest eco bag was unveiled in front of awe-struck spectators during the launch of Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2009 (KLDW 09) at KL Tower recently.

As part of the event’s aim to make a difference in Malaysia’s creative economy, the bag made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, enhancing Malaysia’s name globally.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/4/6/central/m_p20EcoBag.jpg
Recordbreaker: A close-up view of the world’s largest eco bag.

Measuring 51.5ft x 229.65ft (16.92m x 70m), the bag was showcased at KL Tower for three days before making its way to CapSquare and other venues around the city.

Presented under the banner “Become”, which is short for “Be an Eco Friend like Me”, the project was aimed at environmental conservation through minimising the use of plastic bags.

The launch of the bag marked the start of a nine-day event featuring the participation of 40 designers from 15 countries and back-up crews in various fields, in several programmes.

“The event, entitled Show + Shine, is aimed at showcasing what we don’t have and enhancing what we have,” said KLDW 09 president Izuldin Hani.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail, who officiated at the event, said it was a great way to gather well-known designers under one roof to share their knowledge.

“Our city has an abundance of talent but they have not reached their full potential, so by having this event, we can boost the creative economy and expertise of Malaysia,” Fuad said.

He added that youngsters had immense potential in this creative field, which included designing projects like games, animation, film and architecture.

“Design enhances the value of a product, so by emphasising on the design, we can compete with other countries and market our product around the world,” Fuad said.

KLDW 09 ambassador Abdul Rashid said the event would give locals an opportunity to showcase their talents and learn from more senior designers.

“Outside our country, many of our very own designers have made it big, but why should they go so far? They should be able to make it big here as well,” Rashid said.

He also hoped that Malaysia would soon become a designers’ hub.

The KLDW events were held at seven different locations and included shows, exhibitions, talks and conferences.

Among the venues were the National Art Gallery, Matic, Capsquare, Annexe Central Market and Le Meridien.

KUALA LUMPUR: The world's largest eco bag was placed on the KL Tower on Friday in conjunction with KL Design Week 2009 (KLDW), the country's first premier design event.

The bag, measuring 15.4m by 8.9m, has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records.

KL Tower public relations and events general manager Nasaruddin Mohd Nor said the event was aimed at highlighting the importance of saying "no" to plastics.

"This campaign is designed to create awareness of and educate the masses on the importance of preserving the environment for future generations," he said.

Nasaruddin said an exhibition to promote the campaign would be held at the KL Tower and CapSquare KL for the duration of the KLDW which ends on Saturday.

The exhibition will showcase 1,000 designs by designers from around the world. The designs will carry illustrated messages on the need to save the environment.

Mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail, who launched the KLDW, said the nine-day festival was a good way to boost the country's creative industry.

"As the fastest-growing metropolitan in the region, we need to compete with the rest of the creative hubs in the world, such as Tokyo, New York, London and Singapore.

"We have a good pool of talented designers, and the KLDW will be a great platform for them to learn and experience various designing styles," said Fuad.

The festival, called Show and Shine, showcases "what we don't have, and to enhance what we do have", said the mayor.

Forty designers from 15 countries will be participating in the event.

"There will be conferences, seminars, lectures and forums.

"The designers will be sharing their creativity and experiences with the public."

Fuad said the KLDW was expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors to the capital city.

The highlight of the launch was when base jumper Mohd Idrus Yusop leaped off the KL Tower, carrying a symbolic eco bag which he later presented to Fuad.

KLDW will be held in seven locations, including the National Art Gallery, Cap Square KL, Le Meridien Hotel, KLCC, Matic, KL Tower and the Annexe at Central Market.

DREAM WEDDING: The experience has given these
couples a chance to make their big day extra special

For nine lucky women, they now have the licence to throw a hissy fit should any of their respective husbands ever forget their wedding anniversary. What excuse could he possibly give for forgetting that their wedding happened on Sept 9, 2009 (09/09/09)?

Following the amazing success of ‘Wedding Made In The Sky’ last year where eight couples took the vow of love on Aug 8, 2008, nine couples pledged their wedding vows this year on the special day of 09/09/09 atop Menara Kuala Lumpur, the fourth tallest building in the world.

One couple, Wong Kee Hun, 29 and Lai Huey Keap, 30 said it was not a pre-planned thing to have the wedding at the tower but they had just stumbled upon the package.

“We have been together a long time and we felt it to be a unique thing to get married on such a special day,” said Wong. “I wanted her to feel extra special on her big day.”

Isn’t that an ‘awww’ moment?

“This year was the first time the nine newly wedded couples were driven along the Golden Triangle in a double decker bus for a short tour while being escorted by police riders,” said Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad, chief executive officer of Menara Kuala Lumpur.

He added that it also gave the public the opportunity to witness the exciting event. Menara Kuala Lumpur together with Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, Zulkifli continued, will assist in providing full details and information on wedding registrations, customs and Malaysian laws for interested local and international couples to hold their wedding at Menara Kuala Lumpur.

The experience would give couples a chance to make their big day extra special. After all, pledging wedding vows at 300 metres above ground level is as close to ‘a match made in heaven’ as one can get!

BASE jumping is no longer exclusively a men’s domain, as a handful of women show
Tuesday October 27, 2009
By CHRISTINA LOW

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/10/27/central/m_pg16sverdlenko.jpg

Free fall: Sverdlenko raising her arms in her first dive off the tower.

JUMPING off cliffs and mountains is no longer something only for the men, as more women have stepped up to such extreme challenges.

During the recent KL Tower International Malaysia Jump 2009, a total of 80 participants signed up to jump off the 380m-tall tower, and among these brave souls were a handful of women.

Like their male counterparts, the women feared nothing; they just wanted to get up there and have fun. What was more interesting was that almost all were first-timers in Malaysia.

Russian Larisa Sverdlenko said she had heard about the tower jump from friends who had participated in the annual event, and it had prompted her to make her maiden trip to Malaysia to participate in it, too.

“I have never come to Malaysia before, so this is like a holiday and diving trip,” said Sverlenko, who was formerly a skydiver in the Russian national team, The Ladybirds.

The 39-year-old, who now works as an instructor in the wind tunnel, training aspiring skydivers, said she decided to take up BASE (buildings, antennas, spans and earth) jumping as she found it more interesting.

“We get to see more things, such as tall buildings and a general view of the city, being a base jumper,” said Sverdlenko, who has recorded 150 BASE jumps in Russia, Norway, Italy and Switzerland.

She said the KL Tower Jump would be her second tower jump, the first being the Ostankino Tower in her home country.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/10/27/central/m_pg16mancino.jpg

New fun activity: Mancino is a full-time professional skydiver
and is now moving on to BASE jumping with her boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Wioletta Roslan, 34, from Sweden, who was also on her first trip to Malaysia for the event, said the weather here might be a little warmer than it was in other countries but it suited her fine.

“I have no complaint, it is my kind of temperature here.

“It is also easier to jump in this weather,” said Roslan, who took up skydiving when she was just 19 years old.

Roslan, who works as an oil rig inspector, said flying allowed her to be “alive” and made her feel that there were no limits in life.

“Even if the things l enjoy doing may be seen as high and scary, I love it; every level of height gives a different kind of excitement to jumpers.

“If I had to pick a favourite, it would be the wingsuit flying I did in Switzerland — it made me feel like I was flying with wings attached to me!” said Roslan, who has completed some 600 BASE jumps.

Italian skydiver Roberta Mancino said she had only taken up BASE jumping recently after having been a skydiver for the past nine years.

Mancino, a popular sports personality in her home country, had logged an impressive 5,500 skydives before embarking on being a BASE jumper with her boyfriend Jeb Corliss.

“It is something new and fun which I look forward to each time, whether it is from a tower or mountain,” Mancino, 29, said during the trial jump session recently.

Among the countries participating in the Jump this year were Italy, New Zealand, India, Ireland, Denmark, Russia, Holland, Norway, Turkey, Canada, Indonesia, China, Singapore and Malaysia.

Besides the usual day jumps, KL Tower also allowed the professionals to do night jumps, a new addition to the BASE jump circuit this year.
