If you think Frankfurt is No.1 then London easily should be in top 3.
Just compare the aerial view of these two cities, you will clearly see how small Frankfurt skyline is compared to massive London skylines and in terms of architecture and iconic towers London is superior and far ahead of Frankfurt which also lacks of supertall.

i have to give justice to barcelona
though it's not as tall and as dense as the others, it is one of the most well-defined and visually appealing skylines in europe!

^^ I get that, you want to claim Barcelona has 2nd best skyline in the whole Europe

I gotta go there and check that out how Europe's second best skyline looks like ... Ohh poor Europe...

that's on a personal note... i already mentioned it's neither tall nor dense, nevertheless it's well defined and visually appealing... you are always free to think otherwise! and my list can even change in split of a second like it always do...

I don't count things like Communication towers, Eiffiel Tower (Cultural type), TV antennae, Churches spires and Chimneys etc. So i thought that tallest one in Warsaw is some kind of like Cultural type that's why i didn't put it in the list and i put The Shard instead because it currently standing at 280m+ which is taller than any other U/C towers in EU. Isn't it fair lol :D i can change my list if you want.

I didn't say Madrid is the best European skyline, I only wanted to say Madrid has a skyline like few European cities, and you said that Madrid didn't deserve be in this list, absurd.
Why do you talk about Frankfurt? Don't feel attacked, I know the Frankfurt skyline is better than Madrid skyline (for me the second in Europe after the Parisian).
Yes, Madrid has 4 of the six tallest in EU:
1-Commerzbank Tower. Frankfurt. 259m.
2-Messeturm. Frankfurt. 256m.
3-Torre Caja Madrid. Madrid. 250m.
4-Torre de Cristal. Madrid. 249m.
5-Torre Espacio. Madrid. 236m.
6-Torre Sacyr. Madrid. 236m.
You have to add ten +100m buildings (and a lot of proyects), some of them were the tallest in Western Europe.

To me, a skyline isn't just skyscrapers, its a mixture of old and new architecture. So I rate London, then Paris as my top 2, because out of all of Europe's cities, they have managed to intertwine the old and new beautifully.

Then for the rest;
3. Rotterdam
4. Moscow
5. Warsaw

I really think that Rotterdam's skyline is under-rated. Its in my top 3 easily, but in some 'best of Europe' threads, it barely scrapes the top 10 :ohno:

^ ^ ^ ^Too many night pictures in this thread  Clearly posted in order to create a fake illusion of nonexistent continuity in the skylines

Another con-job: the building height cuttofs used to count the # of highrises. Both the 90m cuttoffs and the 150m cutoffs used in this thread in order to assert the alleged number of skyscrapers in a city are arbitrary and therefore inherently biased. Until there comes a cut-off consensus we should just stick to the "roundest" cuttoff figures and do the countings (i.e. the only legit cutoffs are either 100 meters or 200 or 300... etc) anything other than that is dishonest.

As to the core issue: since everyone has their own criteria to determine the "best skyline" I have mine too: The best skyline is the one that has skyscrapers dominating EVERY part of the city center and possibly even beyond. Skyscrapers must be THE dominant aspect of the city: looming and casting their shadow across ALL corners of the main area of town. None of that "indian reservation" zone of skyscrapers confined and constrained and tucked into some little corner like a red light district (as if scrapers are perverted and something to be ashamed of) shoved away from the "real" heart of town where everyone hangs out, like a shopping mall playground where children and animals are "dropped" before commencing the real activity of shopping.

So based on this superior philosophy of the best skyline being the free-est and the most CONTINUOUS one, the overwhelming winners are:

1, Benidorm :)
2, Rotterdam

The rest of Europe is not even close, not even anywhere near these two REAL scraper-cities!

^^I think the first picture is Balneario Camboriu in Brazil, and I agree with your opinion, but maybe we could say one thing is the best "skyline" (just how the city looks from far), or wich one is the most "skyscraper-city", for me, the last one are the most impressive as a skyscraper fan, because you feel there could be new tall projects anywhere in the city, and you can easily live in a tall building, as example, I'm planning to do a 2 day trip to Benidorm, I'm looking for a cheap hotel and well located, and the best option is in a 25 floor building, how many chances do you have to stay in such a tall building in other cities in Europe? also, there are two forumers from Benidorm, one lives in a 43 floor building, and the other one in a 23 floor building. I love Benidorm and Rotterdam for that, but also London is building towers everywhere in the city, not like Madrid, wich 4 towers are far from the city center.
This is a real picture of Benidorm, not that one from Brazil:

Victhor

I know there are a lot of very tall residential buildings in Moscow, but I think they are spred on a very large area, in Benidorm they are all together in a small area, also have in mind that you are comparing a city with a population over 10 millions with another one under 100 thousand, that's less than 1% the population of Moscow.
By the way, I have seen in this thread some figures of number of skyscrapers over xxx metres per city, but there are no figures for Moscow, it should be on top of those rankings.

And Villajoyosa, the little neighbour town that shares some streets with Benidorm (like Paris and Courbevoie) has 4 buildings over 100 metres, that sums up 30 buildings over 100 metres, in a place with a population of 100,000, if London (with pop: 7,5m) had the same high-rise density than Benidorm, it would have 2250 buildings over 100 metres

There's a better one from CTBUH. As you can see, Moscow, Istanbul, and Paris are the only European cities to make the Global top 50. This is the top 50 ranked by 'Combined Heights' which is the height in metres of all buildings over 100 m added together.

Next to zero % chance

You need spend a fortune to stay at the handful of skyscraper hotels in Europe outside Benidorm. They charge premium for the very fact that they are high rise. For example until recently the most expensive hotel in Amsterdam was the Japanese 'Hotel Okura' which coincidentally was also one of only TWO skyscrapers (20+ story buildings) in Amsterdam until recently (until the boom of the 1990s-2000s).

?By that quote I meant that night-light tends to mesh up the building edges and makes distinguishing the low rise from the high rise difficult. It doesn't mean I don't like night skyline, I love it. But in order to increase the objectivity it is good not to forget the day-pics too. That's all I'm saying.

All the buildings that have ever been the tallest in Europe are called "the first skysraper in Europe", that's because there's no limit for a building to be called skyscraper, Madrid's Telefonica building is also called like that, because it was the tallest european building until that building in Antwerp was completed (1926 to 1932 I think), and before Telefonica building there were other "first european skyscrapers"

That building in Antwerp is wildly accepted as the first skyscraper in Europe. The building in Madrid is no skyscraper to me. It is a big building wit a small tower on top of it.
Like you say, there is no definition, but everybody can judge for them-self.

Maybe because Canary Wharf is very Canadian in its appearance and design. It was inspired by Toronto.

Well there are some criteria used to determine whether a building was a skyscraper such as steel truss and/or incorporation of elevator, etc.Exactly!

Highrise buildings have a specific structure and development history. You can't just say any tall structure like for example those medieval/gothic church towers in Europe (some of them are really tall) can be counted as real "highrise buildings" because they are all classic buildings: it is their walls that carry the weight of the upstairs weight, whereas in a real modern highrise building the upper floors are carried by things that don't exist inside classic/normal/small buildings: core columns that continuously go from the basement up to the roof.

Current tallest skyscraper in Canary Wharf is taller than any skyscraper in Paris, Warsaw, Benidorm, Berlin or any other EU cities except the tallest ones in Frankfurt and Madrid. However, European Union or probably Europe's tallest building is U/C in London, so i don't know why you said that perhaps you are comparing it to Dubai? If so, i completely agree with you

Thank you. In comparison to many cities worldwide or even several cities in europe, London's skyscrapers generally are not so competitive in terms of height. The Shard, which is still under construction, is the only building in London to surpass the height of 300m. So, yeah that was pretty much what I meant when I said it.

He means that you have to be bold ( or, in laymans terms, to have balls ) to put Rotterdam and Warszaw behind Paris, which has pretty boring skyline, with no iconic skyscraper in La Defence.
It's also very arguable whether Rotterdam should rate higher than Warszaw, which probably has the fastest growing skyline in EU and the fantastic Palace of Culture as opposed to no tall historic buildings in Rotterdam.
Thirdly, to mention Brussels ( with no skyscrapers over 150m and no iconic skyscrapers whatsoever and leave out London with its 2 clusters ( Canary Wharf and the City ) and numerous landmark skyscrapers shows biasnes that borders on idiotic. And I mean that in a very caring way.

I completely disagree. Paris has way nicer skyscrapers than both Rotterdam and Warszaw, and it's skyline is very nicely composed and dense. Furthermore, Rotterdam beats Warszaw, since the latter is a collection of rather dull and oldfashioned buildings, with the exception of the Palace of Culture, whereas Rotterdam's new scrapers are modern and elegant. also, the Palace of Culture isn't a skyscraper, so I don't really take it into account. Otherwise you could count every cathedral as well.

What an idiotic remark. London is in my top 10, just like Brussels, and higher as well. I only listed my top 5. If the two clusters were in the same area, it would be in the top 3, but now it's two very small, very unimpressive areas. And the Dexia tower is as iconic as any in Rotterdam or Warszaw (unfortunately it's 50m too low)...

I agree that modern architecture in Rotterdam and the Netherlands in genaral is among the best in the world but it's skyline doesn't impress me that much too spread out and it lacks something really impressive like Pkin. It's true that Warsaw have some bad aplles from the '90 but they don't dominate the skyline and the new stuff is at least ok.

So in that sense Europe is actually pretty impressive, and cities like Paris and Frankfurt... etc DO have magnificent skyline since the word skyline means everything that is lined up under the horizon (not just the tall buildings but also the other structures like old church towers and belforts and rivers and the sea and the mountain backdrop... everything!

Frankfurts skyline is not dead , it is expanding slowly but surely,
also all buildings get renovation or recladding regularly. next year the
taunusturm will rise in the main cluster

Are you guys being serious?
Frankfurt is one of the European cities with most tall towers coming up currently.

A few examples >150m height:

- Urban Entertainment Center (UEC) including:
Skyline Plaza Tower (212m, App), another office tower (160m, App) and Skyline Plaza Shopping center (U/C)
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=480449&page=9

- Tower 185 (200m, T/O)
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=505636&page=53

- European Central Bank Twin Towers (185m each, U/C)
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=185988&page=20

- Taunusturm (170m, U/C)
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=521026&page=14

Not to speak of several other towers >100m to be u/c soon and completely excluding the proposed Tower 365 (350m).

In the last two years a 200m tower, a 170m tower, a 135m and a 100m tower were built in Frankfurt. Right now under construction is a 185m tower and another 170m tower...yeah, sounds really like a dead skyline to me...

I wouldn't call Frankfurt dead, but it's not exactly a hive of construction either. Frankfurt looks fabulous is some shots, and surprisingly sparse in others.

the thing about european skylines is that they all lack density that's why they look great in some vantage points and not on others... and oh, we do not gauge a skyline by the number of proposed buildings in it, i mean, like, 50 proposed supertalls in madrid doesn't make it any better than frankfurt, london or moscow at its current state!

for now, i believe it's a battle between benidorm, frankfurt, london, paris and moscow...

I'm sure I'll take some flak for this, but as an outside, objective viewer, having seen dozens of photos of Moscow, London, La Defense, Frankfurt, Rotterdam, etc, I have to mention a city that has yet to be brought up in this thread. My favorite European skyline is . . .

Monaco. It's a beautiful, warm blend of nature and man. You can feel the Mediterranean climate just looking at its skyline (or, rather, two lines: the line of the condos in front of the mountains) from the marina. I think it's one of the most fantastic looking places on Earth.

although skyline-wise i'd say monaco is down in my list, i agree with your general concept of its beauty!

well, personally, i'd rather have european cities like london and paris not build too big a skyline to preserve their old-world charm! they could be new and modern inside, but i like them to stay "old outside".

I can't believe you even mentioned 100m building lol

Istanbul has 71 and Paris has about 76 buildings that are 100m+ if i also would like to state that

Right now under construction is a 185m tower and another 170m tower...yeah, sounds really like a dead skyline to me...

Only 2? Right, London currently has 11 quality skyscrapers U/C including one EU tallest tower and another 45 skyscrapers are approved and these constructions will start by 2012-2013 plus there are 25 towers that are proposed. On the other hand, 35 buildings are U/C in Istanbul. And we all know that no EU cities can compete with Moscow in terms of the number of supertalls and height. So you better not boast about 100m highrise

SO143 is just ignorant about Frankfurt...

Never ever insult at any SSC member young man and you better stay focus on the discussion about skyline/skyscrapers. I made a proper research before i created this thread and i know which city has incredible potential to dominate Europe's best skyline in the future. Saying this city's skyline is the most beautiful that city's skyline is bla bla is just a matter of personal taste and it can be understandable as well. Any personal opinions about skyline are welcomed too except personal insult. Have fun ok

The Frankfurt skyscraper development has a major advantage though compared to that of those full-bodied other ones: the towers are actually really getting built (in time) and don't show up like 20 years later or become "on hold" and stuff like that as it seems to be with many of those megalomanic Dubai-copying cities...
S.th. like 2 new tall towers a year isn't bad for a European city, at least better than 60 "approved" towers that don't get built at all (or in a period of 30 years = 2 a year). It's always very speculative to talk about the future, though. In recent times (2009-today) the following number of buildings >100m has been built (or at least become T/O; with the exception of the Shard in London which I counted here although it is not finished or T/O yet):
Moscow 11
London 5 (4 without the Shard)
Frankfurt 4
Rotterdam 3
Paris 1
Warsaw (none)

^ That list is incomplete or too old. Where are Tower 185 (200m; T/O) and Jumeirah Frankfurt (100m)? For Moscow I also miss some buildings.

London - 6 (without the Shard, Orbit Tower, St George Wharf tower, and The Heron)

Ok, but the Heron is listed there and St George Wharf tower is far from being T/O, isn't it?

I've got the infos from here:
http://skyscraperpage.com/

But I think it is incomplete too since it doesn't include the "Royal Londen Hospital Tower 2" (nice building actually!) as well as that "Pioneer Point North, Ilford". Thanks for the info :okay:

SO143 is just ignorant about Frankfurt...

When you follow the rate-our-skylines-threads you can see
he is not ignorant. It's a bit unfair to say that. He uses other criterias for his ratings.

Of course he knows, that Frankfut is not "dead". I understood from the first reading, he compares this kind of status with London and Moscow, and everybody has to admit, that both cities have currently more projects running than Frankfurt.
But this don't make them a better skyline than Frankfurt. London is closing a gap and will share the status of number 1 in Europe with Frankfurt - Both by far ahead of other cities. And they will share this status for long time in future. Because I don't think London can keep up that boom and will slow down on Frankfurts project-level (wich is noct dead, or slow by the way)
Moscow is building, as if there is no tomorrow. Projects are ugly, don't fit toghether neither fit in the city. It's ugly for me.
Paris lost contact to the top. They are talking for ages about big projects and nothing happens. I already lost hope to see europes best and most interesting project (tour phare) rising. And when they will start at least, the gap is too big

I do agree that Frankfurt developes much slower right now than London or Moscow. And though I do believe Frankfurt has the best quality skyscrapers in Europe, it's skyline isn't the best or the most impressing to me too.
I really think Benidorm takes the cake, even though it's kinda ugly und cheap. XD

i'd always have benidorm-biased list for europe's best skyline. but as ugly as its buildings are doesn't really matter much when i look at the skyline as a whole. for quality-skyscrapers, of course it'll be a fight between frankfurt, london and paris. that's looking at it at present.. although some cities holds a bright future for their skyline, this isn't the right time to count them in.. not until their proposals get actually built.

5. Madrid

only Paris and Frankfurt may change the position soon, the others are very far apart for me

silver tower, eurotower, trianon, skyper, galileo, deutsche bank towers and soon the

second place goes to Moscow. the IBC is coming along nicely and could overtake

third is Paris, fourth London, then Istanbul, Warsaw, Vienna, Rotterdam, Milano...

You are quite right about Frankfurt mate, in fact these cities are completely different in terms of cityscape and planning. The highrises in London are (randomly) built in any part of the city. I think it is just because of the differnce between big city and small city though. Perhaps London is aiming or trying to become a massive city with multiple clusters and skyscrapers all over the city. Frankfrut looks like LA in terms of city planning IMO, a city with only one cluster in the central area. At the moment i am more into the projects in Moscow :) that's because i prefer supertalls and quality.

Here is a pic of London i found, quite old though as you can see only a shorty Shard

Paris and Frankfurt for me. Also love London, Rotterdam, Moscow, Istanbul, Warsaw and co.

Think London should take the mantle within the next decade. It's all stations go there.

^^ As i said before these cities are different. As far as i have realised Frankfurt has the best looking (one) cluster in the centre of the city, whereas London has many towers all over the city. Besides, it doesn't really have such a thing called "cluster" though, as the matter of fact London skyline is quite huge and massive as you can see it's skyline from one side of the city to another end of the city and it's still expanding like theres no tomorrow :ohno:

I think it's a little sad though, that London is spoiling it's historical skyline with so many massive skyscrapers. St. Pauls Cathedral and the Parliament now look so tiny and insignificant in comparison. (Paris is doing a good job keeping skyscrapers out of the center and in Frankfurt there actually isn't much to spoil...)
I'll be in London at the end of the week to see for myself how much has changed. It's been 17 years since I last visited the city...

Well, London's historical skyline from Victorian era consisted of St. Paul's, Big Ben and a number of church spires, all of them rather short.
Apart from the Eiffel tower, all the tall buildings in European cities built before the age of skyscrapers were cathedrals. So the "historic" skyline of London would be pretty boring, especially since the city is huge. The reason why London has skyscrapers in the old historical centre and the Paris doesn not is because Paris wasn't heavily bombed in WW2. Much of the City was destroyed in the air raids, thus leaving space for new developments. Finally, I wouldn't say St. Pauls's looks tiny and insignificant - if you're standing on the Waterloo bridge it grabs your attention more than the skyscrapers of the City.

Paris cluster seems well balanced, Frankfurt looks great, but Canary Wharf needs density and more boxy-towers like North American cities.

Let me tell you what is good about each city
London: keeps some nice towers in a nice area not too big
Paris; Most of the towers are short but are evenly spaced out and lets people know it is a skyline.
Frankfurt:Has great very tall towers nice design to every. Especially the tallest one
Rotterdam: Small and cute, doesn't need huge towers in this city looks good.
Madrid:The four towers are very modern they all stand out will be a great skyscraper city.
Istanbul: looks like they have something going.
Warsaw: Having a boom in construction it will look very good and it already has a good tower city. Will look much better with some very tall.
Moscow: Some very impressive super talls, nice design of them and good cluster to make it look very good, looks nice at night probably best in Europe.

I think Moscow realy has the most daring modern skyscrapers. I really wonder what the town will look like in 10 years.

The dildo-shaped buildings in Barcelona and London are also pretty daring though

I still think the Paris skyline is one of the best in the world. The large straight axis from the louvre, via the arc de triomphe, to la Défense is just breathtaking (if you look straight towards it of course). The Eifel tower also nicely sticks out.

now i really think i have to upgrade frankfurt to number one in my list. but i guess i'd still go for my underdog... (for some personal reaasons)
1. Benidorm- not so good architecturally, and not at par when it comes to height but it has
the only continious skyline in more vantage points.
2. Frankfurt- well-clustered, good architecture, has the height factor, but kinda feel like still
missing something.
3. Paris- well-balanced and has continuity.
4. London- would have faired higher but the great skyscrapers are scattered all over which
kind of feels like a blasphemy to its heritage structures.
5. Moscow- for the great potential. has a good start with its nicely designed skyscrpers.

I also prefer a concentration of skyscrapers at one place instead of skyscrapers being spread over a large area. This way you can keep the old city intact and at the same time enjoy enjoy the benefits of a modern business district. I like the London skyline, but I think it's a bit of a shame that the old buildings do not really stand out anymore. European cities does not have look like all the interchangeable modern American, Australian or Asian cities, they should maintain their own style.

European cities does not have look like all the interchangeable modern American, Australian or Asian cities, they should maintain their own style.

exactly! that's one reason why i'm not that impressed with london although it boasts some of the most architecturally superior skyscrapers in Europe. I just think they don't complement the city as a whole. paris is a different story though, it has made a good cluster of skyscrapers without much negtive effects to its old historic architectures nearby. i just think that european cities do not need massive skylines, they're great without them...

not true. moscow started building skyscrapers in the 1950s. some of the most famous examples of skyscraper architecture are coming from the 50s and 60s. the latest buildings are just the new generation of highrise building in moscow.

Once upon a time "London skyline" meant something. ONLY landmark buildings were synonymous with that concept .

I grew up with this "rising out of the river" logo appearing in various programs on my TV:

When I went to London for the first time THAT's what I wanted to see with my own eyes.

But alas, all these are completely gone from the horizon  submerged into an ocean of glass and steel.

As a result, London skyline as a whole (not just buildings individually) is not iconic anymore

maybe "iconic" isn't the right word for it... i think london's skyline is recognizable.. but not impressive! mainly because of ruining its old-world charm.

Your "London skyline" is just St. Paul's cathedral. Only that. Insufficient for a city of that size. All other buildings that can be seen on the picture are only visible if you're standing on the riverbank or one of the bridges. They are not dominant from the great distance, and the point of "skyline" is that it's recognisable and impressive even many miles away.
Besides, even during Victorian Era, London was building the most modern buildings and used newest technologies in construction. Yes, the styles were "revival", but it was nevertheless contemporary architecture. So don't whine how London is destroying her urban fabric. London is going boldly forward, like she always did.

First of all London is not Rome or Anthem. London is famous for it's classic + modern (mixed) architecture. Second of all being a financial centre of the world i reckon London should build much more high standard "quality" skyscrapers in it's financial districts in order to be seen as a genuine Alpha++ world city that plays a huge role on the global scale. ATM i find it's skyline sort of inferior in terms of both quantity and density. I am not saying London should be like Dubai or Shanghai but it still needs to construct more highrises in order to shape it's massive skyline. On the other hand, Frankfurt cluster looks fantastic but it needs supertalls. Paris has great density but they look rather short. Without a doubt Moscow skyline is so promising and has a lot of potential to dominate all the Europe's tallest buildings. Other cities such as Istanbul, Rotterdam, Warsaw, Milano etc are also working hard and some of them already have good looking skylines.

I agree with most of it except that Frankfurt needs supertalls. I would appreciate more 200+ towers to generate a higher density, mostly bewtween the messe quarter and the bankcluster. after that a spertall would fit perfectly but not now.
personally I guess that Frankfurt has got the scrapers with the highest quality in europe.

balderdash. I did not say No to supertalls at all. Frankfurt needs a basis for them. Its the best and most harmonic skyline in Europe and if it want to keep this title, it would be useless to run around like a scared chicken because London builds one and Paris talks about them for ... for how long is paris talkin now? 25 Years? Frankfurt needs a basis for Supertalls to keep it's skyline harmonic. And thats what Frankfurt has to work on now - and it works on it.

i'm not saying that london shouldn't build one. i mean it's their prerogative if they choose to. but (hopefully) with proper zoning. paris' skyscrapers aren't as high and architecturally wonderful, but the clustering made it look more attractive than london. IMO.:)

^^thats like saying London only has Canary Wharf.

Madrid has 2 main clusters AZCA & Cuatro Torres, the problem is the dislevel ground that the city sits on. You can only apreciate a good skyline view from the south in a tall building bc it's density will aslo will block the view from the ground. From the North u only see the four towers sense they sit in higher ground.

We just need more spaniard forumers to post pictures from this angles!!! (There is one more tower in the smaller cluster now aslo)
