View Full Version : Hull Domesday 1986 Wagg May 17th, 2011, 09:39 AM Some great stuff from 25 years ago http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday (type in Hull) Dazzar86 May 17th, 2011, 01:43 PM People in Hull have many expressions which seem to be peculiar to the city and its environs. A man's wife is often referred to by him as "Our lass". Members of a family are usually "our ---". When a local person is lost for words and cannot name an item, it is referred to not as a "whatsit" or a "thingumajig" but as a "you-know" with the emphasis placed on the first word. In Hull, access to the rear of a property is via a "tenfoot" - not a "backstreet". Children are invariably referred to as "the bains" (not "bairns"). Hull citizens of all social classes frequently use the term "I aren't" rather than "I'm not". I always remember from a very young age hearing my great-gran saying things like "Oh will you pass me the you-know, please?" livin' hull May 17th, 2011, 02:26 PM have a great book on dialects of Britain which has large section on Hull & ERY very interesting.... found this on the Doomsday site - don't remember them asking these questions but... IMPRESSIONS OF HULL Some 15 year olds were asked what they thought of Hull as a place to live. The main answer given by the girls was "boring", mainly because there was "nothing to do at night". They do say that there are discos but these are for those over 18 and the one run for 15 to 17 year olds is often very rough. The shopping centre was said to be quite good but most thought other cities had more to offer. The boys were less interested in the shops and more into sport. They pointed out that Hull has two of the best Rugby League teams in Britain, Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC. The area also has hundreds of amateur and youth teams. All the girls and boys agreed that Hull is not the place for a holiday. little really changes does it! livin' hull May 17th, 2011, 02:32 PM forgot this opened this year... WOODFORD SPORTS CENTRE,HULL Will be the first purpose built sports centre in Hull when finished. The centre is being built out of the money raised by the City Council's lottery. They intend the facility to cater for people of all ages and to allow people to participate in a wide range of activities. The large multisports hall : badminton, gymnastics, football, cricket, table tennis, trampoline, body building, etc. The indoor swimming pool will be like an island in the Pacific Ocean(palm trees, artificial sand, waves). This will be a fun pool for all the family and not a racing pool like Hull's others. There will also be facilities for sunbeds, squash, bars and much more. The sports centre will be a non profit making enterprise for the ratepayers. we thought it was fantastic when it opened! livin' hull May 17th, 2011, 02:40 PM Probably the most depressing article on the website - 25 years and NOTHING HAS CHANGED (it may have even got worse!) Many residents of the inner-area wards of Hull are victims of the wider economic and social malaise.Lack of job opportunities and a marked deterioration of the physical environment are contributary factors to many of the problems which beset our society today. Working in Social Priority Schools we see every day the effects of marital breakdown, one parent families, neglect, lack of discipline, and the general trauma of trying to keep a family together on limited resources.Side effects such as alcohol, solvent abuse, vandalism and petty crime are increasing. Efforts are being made to provide constructive assistance through slum clearance programmes, improving older housing areas, building community centres, and utilising wasteland for recreation. Many voluntary organisations assist. Thanks Wagg - didnt feel depressed do now! ;) (this is a great website and great trip down memory lane) up the tigers May 17th, 2011, 03:59 PM Some great stuff in there. If only there were more photos. This is about Princes Dock before Princes Quay. It seems the stilts idea was though of long before the plans were finalised. For many years this dock has been an eyesore in the city centre. Dirty, smelly and very dangerous (it cost a young boy his life last year) the dock has been seen as a waste of space for a long time. Built in the 1820's it was called Junction dock as it joined the Old dock and the Humber dock. It was re-named at the same time as the Old dock and became known as Princes dock after the Prince Consort. There is now a proposal to turn the dock into a recreational complex. The development will stand on stilts in the dock. It will be made of glass and chrome and has a maritime feel to it. It will contain modern shops, a high quality restaurant, snooker hall, dance studio and a Disco/nightclub. Outside the dock itself will be cleaned out and used for boating. Dazzar86 May 17th, 2011, 05:17 PM That's one thing that has always struck me about the attitude locally (the same throughout history it seems); Whilst other places seem to protect area's within their built up environment as much as possible (if deemed suitable) - Hull always seems to have taken the same appoach as Rotterdam; one of practicality. It's hard to explain - sort of like, if something can be put somewhere to aid industry, it should come before anything else. Much like Georgian buildings making way for Castle St. That's what the talk about Prince's dock reminds me of. People always say water is a strong feature - why hide it when instead it can be used as a centrepiece. |
