View Full Version : How do you get to work?
GMAC September 28th, 2004, 06:50 AM What mode/s of transport do you use to get to work/uni/school and why?
If you don't use PT what would it take to get you to use it?
For me, I use my car, which makes me feel guilty. I only use my car because I work in Sales and am on the road quite alot. This is even worse for me because my boss is also my partner and we both need our cars for work so we cant even share the driving, which would make life much easier with a T2 half the way.
For me to use PT I would need to get a different job that kept me in the one place all day, preferably in the city or the northwestern suburbs so I would only need to get one bus to work.
NZer September 28th, 2004, 07:48 AM Car,because I live in a small regional town with fuck all public transport........
Drunkill September 28th, 2004, 08:06 AM To get to school i use...
Tram (its right outside my door) so i catch that to the train station, get the train into richmond, then the bus along Punt Rd/Hoddle street (traffic=hell) and then walk a bit from the bus to school, Takes me about 45mins
5 mins on tram
12-20 mins on train (depends if its an express or not)
15+ mins on bus, because they never ocme when there ment to, and the traffic is hell, so there always late or in twos. my saying for the 246 bus
"they say one every ten mins, but it's acctually two every twenty"
fishcatdogbird September 28th, 2004, 08:19 AM I dont use public transport, I drive City link along Monash, Domain Tunnel and then Bolte Bridge getting off at Racecourse Road in North Melbourne near the town Hall.
To use transport I would need a more direct route. I live in East Hawthorn and before the car used to Tram to Camberwell Station, Train to Melbourne Central and then Tram to North Melbourne, all which would take just under an hour, where as the car on average takes around 25min max! I would go back to PT if it was easier and there were less drunks and homeless people on the 57 tram in North Melbourne, its a joke how anyone can consider catching that tram everyday as its a disgrace, its like travelling in a moving homeless shelter, with junkies waiting for their next methadone hit. :bash:

Yardmaster September 28th, 2004, 08:26 AM These days I walk; I used to catch the train, & before that, the tram. I've always endeavoured to live near major public transportation hubs (Clifton Hill, Camberwell, Footscray) so there's plenty of trains.
From a transport point of view, the worst I ever did was three years near the Tullamarine Freeway: it was quite a walk to the Mt Alexander Rd. tram, and an even longer walk to Ascot Vale Station.
Trances September 28th, 2004, 08:50 AM well there are no trains or decent transport where i am in newport
But when working in city catch the bus
I also work down the road and that i can walk too
Orfeo September 28th, 2004, 09:32 AM I walk and then catch a ferry to uni. Mostly I catch a train to/from work, but sometimes that doesn't work out (late nights etc).
James Saito September 28th, 2004, 10:13 AM I have a car but choose to take a train to commute.
It's more expensive than the cost of petrol, but I wanna support PT.
Macca-GC September 28th, 2004, 10:35 AM I catch a bus to school and ride a bike to work
Aussie Bhoy September 28th, 2004, 10:51 AM I walk from my home in Shepherds Bush to my work in Hammersmith, takes about 20 minutes.
I'd hate to have to commute accross London, the tubes and busses are mad during the peak hours.
Oriolus September 28th, 2004, 10:52 AM my saying for the 246 bus
"they say one every ten mins, but it's acctually two every twenty"
lol
I ride a bike to uni most days but if I need text books I take a bus and the exact same thing happens quite often. Two buses come one after the other & the first one is packed cause it's picking everyone up while the second one only has like 2 people on it. Sometimes the driver of the first suggests I wait 30 seconds for the second so the first isn't packed like sardines.

jellyman September 28th, 2004, 12:10 PM Working for the rail gives you free rail transport. I work directly above Central Station in the center of Brisbane. I'm mildly environmentally minded.
I'll give you another hint: I can't stand buses, and its too far to walk.
TOCC September 28th, 2004, 12:41 PM well at the moment im driving, only cause theres a few changes happening at work and im doing crazy ass 14hour days starting at 4am.
Then again most days i drive, its only 10mins away driving, 30mins when i decide to ride cause i live in a hilly area.
Yardmaster September 28th, 2004, 01:13 PM I started up a parallel thread to take a poll here: it's at http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=2306329#post2306329
GMAC September 29th, 2004, 12:22 AM Thanks Yardmaster!!
CULWULLA September 29th, 2004, 01:06 AM if you start a thread and post it but wanted it to include a poll, you have to start again. just tell me to delete it and redo the thread with poll option!
I drive our 2nd car to train station (6km) and then catch Sydney flyer to Town hall (1hour train trip). The train trip has to be one of best in Sydney!!
from picturesque woy woy , thru the gorgeous Hawkesbury River Berowra area,

brilliant!
finn September 29th, 2004, 02:23 AM Train it to work, train it to uni.
I either get driven to the train station in the morning (a few minutes drive, but 20mins if I walked) or drive myself to the station and park it, if nobody else needs the cars.
In the evening I catch the train back and either walk home, call for a lift, or drive the car home if I left it at the station that day.
I only really drive anywhere else on the weekends, but if I'm gonna be drinking then I get where I'm going via PT.
Tony P September 29th, 2004, 02:33 AM I catch a single bus from an inner northern suburb to another inner northern suburb of Sydney. The bus comes roughly every 12 minutes on average, but I know when they come so I rarely wait more than 5 minues and the trip takes about 8-10 minutes. It's a 15 minute trip door to door, typically. Sometimes I walk home from work which takes about 30 minutes at a brisk pace but there's a section over the Warringah freeway I really hate walking over so I don't do that too often.
Aussie Steve September 29th, 2004, 03:08 AM Train to the CBD and car to Toorak, but I think I might be taking the tram to Toorak if petrol prices keep going up and up!
gorgu September 29th, 2004, 06:19 AM I get shitty rail to Chatswood!
Yardmaster September 30th, 2004, 02:30 PM Great commuting Culwalla! The Best!
Shado October 1st, 2004, 03:49 AM ATM. I just wake up... tada!
When working in the CBD - Drove to just inside Brisbane to take advantage of the cheaper fares. Though now with Translink I would proabably catch the bus locally (about 15minute walk or 2 minute drive).
When working on the other side of the CBD I drove, catching PT took far too long when I had to add yet another period of waiting for a connecting service. Was far enough driving (30 mins no traffic, 45 good traffic, 1hr+ bad traffic) 2 hours out of my day is more than enough thanks.
Uni, usually drive because I'm there for only a few hours at a time off peak, and it's only a 20ish minute drive then, and parking / fuel is around the same cost. When I was doing 'whole' days I caught the bus, or was carpooling with 2-3 friends.
Trances October 1st, 2004, 05:09 AM well now it seems i will car share with my brothers work to Netraul Bay and catch a bus to surry hills
Fabian February 5th, 2005, 01:06 PM To get to uni I take a bus from Monterey to Rockdale Station where I connect with a train to Central. Then I change for a train to Strathfield. I then powerwalk 15 mins from Strathfield Station to my uni. Sometimes i might take a bus from the station to the university but I prefer the exercise and plus the timing and frequency of the buses is very poor. The trip usually takes 75 mins to complete (I could get to Parramatta on PT in that same time).
If I drove by car, I'd take 30 mins.
cammo2004 February 5th, 2005, 01:36 PM There really needs to be a more direct PT link from somewhere like Hurstville to Strathfield - even if it's a bus. Me, I walk to TAFE. Takes me 20-30 minutes, but I need the exercise. Will be catching the train when I (eventually) enter the workforce (I prefer trains anyway and I can't drive).

There is a Hurstville - Strathfield Bus that goes via Roselands (Route 450) but it takes 45mins-1hr to do the trip. I'd be good if they did a more direct service.
plotstyle February 5th, 2005, 11:18 PM 2 trains and a tram...
sometimes i drive...
marty_k February 6th, 2005, 12:55 AM To work, I catch a CityCat (or bum a lift).
Most of the time I'll catch a CityCat to uni, unless I go early in the morning, or after working hours. Parking at QUT sucks at any other time :)
sakor1 February 6th, 2005, 01:50 AM I walk up to both Uni and to Work, both take about 30 minutes.... when I need to go any further I usually take the train or scab a lift off someone.
Stu
waustralia February 6th, 2005, 04:01 AM Get my Mum to drive me school, lol. 10 minute drive!!
ShayPlan February 6th, 2005, 08:28 AM Train from Miranda to Edgecliff then bus to council.
For Uni, I am via correspondence, so you could say I use walking as a means of transport (to the study room)...
JayT February 6th, 2005, 11:08 AM I work in the suburbs so its car for me.
jt
hornetfig February 6th, 2005, 11:12 AM Train from Miranda to Edgecliff then bus to council.
You're working for Woollahra Council?! I pity you :tongue2:
Neo February 6th, 2005, 11:17 AM I walk - I pretty much live at work (less than 5 minute walk). If I didn't I'd drive. No other way really. Public Transport here is the train to melbourne three times a day.
Gertzy February 6th, 2005, 11:27 AM I don't have a job or part-time work as I'm a High-School student, but if I get my way, I'll probably be working at woolworths after school etc so i'll walk there as its like about 5 mins walk away. I do have a voluntary job which I wont say but Its in the Townsville CBD so I walk to Stockland Shopping centre (Which is where that woolies is) and catch the bus from there (About 25 mins to Flinders Mall on Average) but if you're also talking about school etc then I ride my Bike from Surburbia.
ShayPlan February 6th, 2005, 01:05 PM You're working for Woollahra Council?! I pity you :tongue2:
 PT. Why do U pity me? Besides the inspections I dont deal with them directly. I know it sounds sterotypical, but the rich are all whingers!
mic February 6th, 2005, 03:07 PM Car down Citylink-the Calder Bottleneck takes between 15-30 mins to pass on occassions.
ABS February 6th, 2005, 03:12 PM I take the bus to both work and uni (both in the suburbs) and carpool with friends for most other trips.
hornetfig February 7th, 2005, 07:51 AM  PT. Why do U pity me? Besides the inspections I dont deal with them directly. I know it sounds sterotypical, but the rich are all whingers!
Well Woollahra Council is a mini fiefdom where many people play out their power struggles and bureaucracy exists for bureaucracy's sake.
Adam BK February 7th, 2005, 08:35 AM I drive to school...its really only a 5-10 min drive.
Blue_Copper February 7th, 2005, 11:44 AM catch the train to townhall then walk to my office near star city
Blue_Copper February 7th, 2005, 11:47 AM :runaway: ......sometimes i ride the cat in to work.
ShayPlan February 7th, 2005, 12:04 PM Well Woollahra Council is a mini fiefdom where many people play out their power struggles and bureaucracy exists for bureaucracy's sake.
:applause: :applause: :applause: Could say that about most (if not all) councils
nikko February 7th, 2005, 12:11 PM eh...I take the bus to school
baxter-rules February 8th, 2005, 01:56 AM Car.. I live 20 min drive from the closets train station, which is about 50+ min from the city... :(
Jimmy James August 19th, 2005, 06:15 PM When I was in Brisbane I worked in the suburbs so I drove.
When I was in Launceston I lived 5 minutes from my work so I walked
Up until last week I would drive to Lara (or sometimes Laverton) and train it from there.
Starting Monday I'll be driving to port Melbourne (no PT in general vicinity + free parking = Jimmy driving!) adding to the traffic from Geelong!
Malt August 20th, 2005, 03:26 AM When i was at school i was driven :P (with friends etc) so that wasnt so bad, a full car..
And on the way home it was Train -> bus -> walk
until the last year and a half which i also got a lift home...
Now i drive to and from work...
Everton Hills -> Murrarie
tayser August 20th, 2005, 03:44 AM Train to Oakleigh, #700 down Warrigal road to Cheltenham, and come back on two trains from Cheltenham to Caulfield and back to Berwick/Beaconsfield - I'll be doing that while still at uni (uni work after work work blows :( )
Randwicked August 20th, 2005, 05:08 AM Carpooling at the mo. Sometimes I catch a bus (15 min) or walk (40 min).
Fabian August 20th, 2005, 08:34 AM To get to uni I take a bus from Monterey to Rockdale Station where I connect with a train to Central. Then I change for a train to Strathfield. I then powerwalk 15 mins from Strathfield Station to my uni. Sometimes i might take a bus from the station to the university but I prefer the exercise and plus the timing and frequency of the buses is very poor. If I drove by car, I'd take 30 mins.
It's changed a bit now. I now take a bus from my place at Sylvania (just around the corner from home) to Hurstville Station. From there it's the same old trip as before. It does feel a bit funny when the train goes through Rockdale especially the express services (I can now take ones that stop Redfern/Central only), and I see people waiting for trains that I used to take. Still the same time as before :), and seeing my old bus collecting people at Rockdale whilst on board the train.
ABS August 22nd, 2005, 06:46 PM Well I'm still being a good public transport advocate for town planning by living an almost car-free lifestyle. I take public transport almost everywhere and have lifts at times where public transport in unviable. I don't have licence and I'm in no hurry to get one.
williampitt August 23rd, 2005, 01:06 AM To get to work I walk.
I live about 15-20 minutes walk from St Kilda to my office on St Kilda Road.
I used to catch the tram 2 stops until they removed the "Short Trip" ticket.
It would now cost me nearly $6 a day to catch a tram, and their machines don't accept notes, so carrying around $6 in change every day is a big ask :bash: .
Anyway, I'd rather get the exercise than reward Connex for stuffing me round, and just whinge about how backwards public transport has become in Melbourne instead.
hopefully with the new ticketing system, I'll be able to start catching trams again, because it only takes me 5 minutes by tram and then I can sleep in a bit.
marty_k August 23rd, 2005, 01:44 AM I drive to uni since it suits me better. I just got a new job at Milton, where parking is very limited, so to get there it's ferry into city --> train to Milton.
17 floors up August 23rd, 2005, 05:34 AM I cycle to work in Melb's CBD - only takes 10 mins. Gotta love that!
Wilko August 23rd, 2005, 05:47 AM I live in Melbourne's south east spread - As much as I hate it, I drive. Would catch public transport if it were close, I also need my car for work sometimes too.
mic August 23rd, 2005, 05:52 AM Drive, takes 15min-20min
Public transport 1hr10 mins
......so sometimes when I decide to waste some time I take the train, other times (majority) I drive so I sleep that 15-20 mins longer)
