West Brom reveals plan to expand Hawthorns stadium

Aaron Morby | Tue 17th May | 7:00

West Bromwich Albion has revealed plans to turn the Hawthorns into a 30,000-seat stadium.

Chairman Jeremy Peace said the club would add an extra 3,500 seats within the next three years.

Expansion plans have not yet been finalised but it is believed the Baggies aim to extend the West Stand to expand the ground from its current capacity of around 26,500.

Peace said: “Our medium-long-term plans include the extension of the Hawthorns to around a 30,000-seat capacity within the next three years regardless of divisional status.

“Despite the apparent financial insanity of such a move, we believe it is the right thing to do as we endeavour to move the club forward and pro-actively encourage the next generation of supporters to come to The Hawthorns.”

He added that the pitch will be levelled out this summer and re-laid with a state-of-the-art Desso playing surface, which combines artificial fibres with a natural grass surface.

Is the West Stand the Main Stand? It would be nice if they could build a completely new one, as that one looks pretty old and lacking in the facilities that WBA would want to boost their revenues.

Does anyone have any idea how they are going to go about expanding the west stand because from what I can see the road to the rear runnings directly across the back of the stand so it's already taking up the maximum footprint that it can.

My sentiment exactly. When I first saw the news, I thought they have to be wrong - you can easily do something with the main stand corners to fit some people there, but the expanded west bank would have to hang over the street. Or wouldn't it? Anyone?

As I understand it, and bear in mind I am a Wolves Fan, the club have been in negotiations with Sandwell Council to realign Halfords Lane in order for a larger stand to be built but as yet no agreement has been reached.

It is more likely that following the purchase and demolition of the Woodman Pub, which sat outside one corner of the ground, between the Birmingham Road and East Stands that they will re-develop this part of the stadium, so that ground capacity can be raised. This would see the corner being 'filled' to the same height as the East Stand.
