RafflesCity November 29th, 2002, 06:25 PM Bank One Center
Dallas, USA
HEIGHT: 240m/787 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1987
ARCHITECT: Harwood K. Smith & Partners/ Johnson Burgee Architects
This striking granite and glass skyscraper has setbacks topped with vaulted shapes at the upper area of the tower, giving it a tapered appearance. The top of the tower is crowned with a cross vault similar to the base of the building's main entrance to the banking hall pavilion. The bank hall features a fascinating viewpoint with its' vaulted skylight. From the cross vault main entrance to the bank, you walk through a 55-foot granite arch into the atrium, across a bridge overlooking the bank-trading floor below.

Sunflower December 2nd, 2002, 10:51 PM Don't really like the base but the rest of the building's great.
8/10
Sunflower December 2nd, 2002, 10:55 PM btw was the base a pre-existing building with the tower built on top?
CTroyMathis December 2nd, 2002, 11:47 PM No, the base wasn't pre-existing. The base does happen to be a five-story banking hall.
AG December 3rd, 2002, 03:21 AM I love how the building has a huge sheet of glass running up the centre of the building on all sides.
Very clean look, the shape is okay, but not as good as the facade.
8.5/10
UrbanLandscape December 3rd, 2002, 04:58 AM It's a great building, and it has some cool features, but the one thing I never liked was the design inside the large arches, as seen below...
http://www.skyscrapers.com/files/transfer/6/2002/11/168212.jpg
I think it should look different, personally. It always looked like those "cement brick" walls from the '60s and '70s. But that's just me.
SUNNI December 3rd, 2002, 11:21 AM with that base, it looks like two buildings stacked on top of each other... but a damn fine building! 9
ryanr December 3rd, 2002, 12:40 PM I kinda like it esp. from the 2nd and 3rd pics...8/10
DamienK December 3rd, 2002, 01:46 PM I've always like the design of this one. 8/10
SteelCity32 December 3rd, 2002, 10:06 PM it's cool. looks ok
7/10
Caledon1981 December 3rd, 2002, 10:39 PM i dunno .. . i think it looks better from farther away .. the base does kind of spoil the design .. . 6/10
RafflesCity December 4th, 2002, 06:13 PM 8/10
Weird and elegant at the same time. I love the huge vertical glass element.
CTroyMathis December 5th, 2002, 08:05 AM It was designed to look old-school from the beginning. The ad
that ran in the papers in the mid-eighties stated the building was
being built on Texas Wall Street.
The top is copper which was treated with chemicals back in the 1980's to
'turn' the copper much sooner than with natural weather elements.
The 'greening' of the top of the building happened within the first year,
to avoid the unsightly slow and moderate changing that takes years.
Thus, making it look older - sooner.
Another photo of the imposing base:

Cliff December 5th, 2002, 09:04 AM Looks a little wierd.
7/10
SUNNI December 5th, 2002, 10:27 AM in a good way or a bad way?
Jasonhouse December 5th, 2002, 04:05 PM You can definitely tell that Johnson had a hand in designing it. There seem to be some references to the work of Louis Sullivan in the design IMO...
This building happens to be one of my favorite towers in Dallas for a wierd reason. When I was in high school, I "designed" a tower very similar to this without having ever seen this building. So when I did see it, I naturally liked it...
8.0/10
Liz L December 5th, 2002, 07:54 PM 8/10 - I like the broad strips of glass racing up the facade, and the way the entire facade dances with the light. And the romanesque detailing of the base blends in well with the rest of the tower, helped by the repeated arches.
But the tower is too chunky, broadside on - it needs some deeper setbacks to help its height. If it were slimmer, maybe the arch-shaped crown wouldn't look quite so awkward.
heirloom December 5th, 2002, 11:30 PM 8/10
looks really grand and imposing from the bottom, but not as nice from far... i quite like...
Bob di Gills December 5th, 2002, 11:44 PM very nice indeed
8/10
cabasse December 6th, 2002, 10:43 PM I agree with UrbanLandscape for the exact same reason! I really don't like those 60sish lookin brick things... not my taste at all.
The building facade is nice, and the center window running up the height is also quite nice.

Pablo December 7th, 2002, 02:15 PM 8/10
nice design;)
Westin Peachtree December 7th, 2002, 05:26 PM Actually......this building is ranked #113.

Nice shape and glass.
DaninTO January 5th, 2003, 09:37 PM Never really liked this one. 6.5/10
Bobdreamz January 19th, 2003, 09:51 PM I like the facade & the base but the top looks terrible...to blocky..it would have looked better if it tapered more towards the top.....7.5/10
Tony 175 January 20th, 2003, 03:46 AM I like some buildings where 1 section is glass and others arent. SOME. others kill this design. This building doesnt. I like it. very Nice! 8.5. :D
De Snor January 23rd, 2003, 11:31 PM I like the base , but the top is less imposing
Luke_C. February 6th, 2003, 01:34 AM This building always looks to me like it belongs in New York City and not Dallas but it is a great design. I don't understand how anyone can call the tower chunky. If you have seen it in person you know It is slender and elegant. I give it an 8.5.

Sort of like "antiquing," huh? Sick!
However, since there is nothing boxy about this building, I'll give it a 7.
Evergrey April 10th, 2003, 03:07 AM 9 A beautiful building... love the copper... and the arches at the top... it really gleams in the sunlight... great vertical glass design too... classy!

I think this building is 100 percent Dallas. Whenever I think of Dallas, I think of this building... and that ugly one with the crisscross light patterns.

TropicalSQ744 May 10th, 2003, 06:06 PM Somehow a little Chinese looking.. Dont ask me why i feel that way.. :) The glass is just placed really awakwardly.. Looks weird.. :bash:
7.5/10
huaiwei May 28th, 2003, 03:14 PM Well the contrast is rather cool.....like a huge waterfall plunging down the facade. :) 7.5/10.
james2390 June 8th, 2003, 08:56 PM this one is one of my favorite in the us! 10

AtlanticaC5 August 21st, 2003, 06:32 PM Wow, cool building! 8/10
Booshkabob August 25th, 2003, 12:34 AM I've always loved the stone/glass combonations in any building that obtains it. This building has a kinda ugly bulky side to it and a slender, sleak, beautiful side to it just like fountain place and BoA. most people see it on the bulky side, but it still looks nice that way, it just looks WAY better on the other view.

airsickpenthousedweller October 24th, 2003, 12:32 PM The glass parts are too wide and there's a vague mix between glass and granite because of that. It also makes the design un-subtle and stupid.
3/10

Great tower.
7 World Trade April 23rd, 2004, 05:38 AM it looks awesome from the narrow side, but the long side is too bulky. but still, it's one of dallas's best

CTroyMathis June 5th, 2004, 02:31 AM Thought this would be a good place to show a historical 1987 Dallas Morning News insert/advert.
Here's the cover and back page of the insert. This was shortly after it opened.
The banking hall revealed in the second image.

David3820 September 20th, 2004, 05:43 PM It looks good but if only it were taller because it doesn't really look like it soars because it's too fat for it's height. If every part of it was about 10 meters taller it would look a whole lot better. 6/10

Pengui April 28th, 2005, 02:59 PM Uhoh, I had never seen this one before ^^ It's pretty tall ^^
I like the unusual mix of cream and blue, the round shapes for the setback with the grid features. And it can look red sometimes. Cool !
Hmmm that being said, the podium entrance is absolutely awful of tackiness. Those lamps give the final blow.
Otherwise very good stuff. I want to see night pics ^^
