First of all, before you all jump at me, SFO is the most beautiful city in The Americas according to me :tongue3:In case you're wondering, I've been to MXC, LA, BsAs, GDL, CDB, MDZ, PV, ACA, GTO, SD, LV, etc etc etc... Anyway... I spent three days in The City and here are the pics.

DAY 1
Ok, I'm not to tell you the story of my life, but after 10 hrs of driving -SFO is just 6 hrs away from LA. So, you try to figure out what happened. :sleepy:- we got to The City. It was a beautiful sunny and fresh summer day -compared to a cloudy, rainy and cold winter day back in December- and I was anxious to enjoy this beautiful city.

Well, the biggest rival of SFO in South America would be Buenos Aires. I've been to Buenos Aires and yes, it's indeed a beautiful city, but SFO is IMO even more beautiful. SFO has something, I don't know. It's own identity, friendly people, the natural setting, the landmarks, the streets, charisma, etc... I don't know. When I go to SFO, I feel like in Disneyland. The architecture of the buildings make them seem like toys or something taken out from a kid's imagination. You see a lot of people walking on the street ( btw, people in SFO are HOT!!! ) and everyone has like this big smile on their faces, everyone seems to be having the happiest time of their lives. I don't know... San Fracisco has a friendly and sexy charisma that drives me crazy.

All I can say is that I left my heart in San Fracisco... twice. :)

SF has beautful geography, but most of its buildings pale in comparison to those in NY, Boston and DC. Therefore, notwithstanding its attractive geography, I would not say that it's the most beautiful city in the US -- let alone the Americas. The latter title clearly belongs to BA.

Anyway, I have spent a lot of time in SF and have never found areas that have street after street of magnificent and elaborate old buildings like those that exist on the Upper East Side between 5th and Lexington or the Upper West Side, etc.

SF is the most beautiful city in the US to MANY people around the world, for a number of reasons. if you think the setting alone makes SF beautiful then you obviously don't know much about SF, because it isn't just the setting (many cities have more dramatic and awe-inspiring settings)..... it's the whole package.

no. that's not true.

i've seen numerous resources that have said the SF bay bridge is the most heavily traveled bridge in the world (in terms of vehicles), as well as George Washington bridge. the bay bridge alone carries almost 300,000 autos daily. i've never seen actual hardcore stats that unanimously put one of these bridges over the other.

and i've never seen any stats that mention Williamsburg as being the 'busiest'.

there is every reason to believe that the Bay Bridge is the busiest bridge in the world, as it is the most vital urban link in one of the most congested metros in the US (much more so than NYC).

it's the San Francisco's Palace of the Legion of honor.

The Asian Art Museum started out with the Avery Brundage collection, which was assembled here in Chicago. How it got to SF is worth telling.

Avery Brundage assembled his art collection with the help of the Curator of Asian Art at the Art Institute of Chicago (I believe it was Kelly at the time.) Avery Brundage wanted to give the collection to the Art Institute provided that they build a separate wing to house it. Kelly promptly forwarded the request to the Director of the AIC, who promptly suggested that it be offered to San Francisco!!!!

This anecdote tells you a lot about SF and Chicago at that time. For one, fashionable Chicago society remained predominantly WASPish long after society in places like NYC and Boston relaxed. Another is that SF was very forward looking even at that time after WWII. It also tells you that unlike the cities of the West Coast, Chicago did not deeply appreciate the Arts outside the traditional western canon (with the exception of the likes of Clarence and Kate Buckingham.) Although changing, many things remain the same here in my native city.

Sorry for being long-winded. My point is that, to me, the beauty of SF lies more in the sense its openness and experimentation to try new things, and to look at the arts and business in ways different and truly innovative compared to its older sister cities. I agree that such things like the expense of owning a house in the City give it a distinctly elitist flavour, but I think people nonetheless flock to the Bay Area not just because of the geography -- or the climate (which is no match for the likes of San Diego-La Jolla).

I do agree: that it's the whole package that make SF what it is.

Rio's beauty lies solely in its geographic setting.

however it's architecture, streetscape, vernacular bldgs, etc are nondescript, if not borderline ugly (can we say favelas?).

beauty comes in different forms. and with SF it is the combination of hills, water, landmarks, pastel victorians, fog, and character that create an experience unlike any other.

I've never been to Rio, but SFO has an awesome natural setting. I personally find SFO's natural setting more attractive than Rio's... So, as you can see, it all depends on who you ask.

I've been in this forum for years and I've seen thousands and thousands of pics from Rio. The only people that I've heard saying that Rio is a " really beautiful city" are Brazilians. I even asked some Brazilians to post street level pics of Rio to see how beautiful the city is, and IDK... I didn't find the city ugly, but I didn't find it " beautiful."

Agreed, one of the most beautiful in the Americas if not the world. SF is one of those cities that you realize how special it is after being there a few days and really exploring the neighbourhoods, and some of the outlying regions. The area surrounding SF is spectacular.

Wow... I made this thread over two years and four months ago and it's still alive, yay! :D

I've been in this forum for years and I've seen thousands and thousands of pics from Rio. The only people that I've heard saying that Rio is a " really beautiful city" are Brazilians. I even asked some Brazilians to post street level pics of Rio to see how beautiful the city is, and IDK... I didn't find the city ugly, but I didn't find it " beautiful."

My two cents in the Rio vs. SFO issue:

The fact that you've seen "thousands" of pics of Rio does not at all mean that you know what Rio looks like. By the same token, your pictures of SFO, as great as they are, IMO do not translate 0.1% of the beauty of the City, they do not do justice to the feeling it exudes once you're there, walking its streets.

Not only does Rio's natural setting rival that of SF, but IMO it is by far more beautiful. If you ever get to visit Rio you'll probably see for yourself that it's not even fair to compare Rio's setting to that of any other city, so beautiful it is.

But when it comes to it (or the whole package, as someone else has put it here) SF is much more attractive a city than Rio. Hands down. I've been to SFO several times and I keep coming back because I just can't get enough of it. I find it to be THE most beautiful city I've been to -- in the Americas, that is.

I just wonder what Rio would look like if it were not as run down as it is today.

Come on people. This is not a competition. The problem is the title "The most beautiful in the Americas"...Well, the Americas have too many beautiful cities in fact! Buenos Aires, Rio, Vancouver, New York, Havana, Recife, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Salvador, Mar Del Plata, Santiago do Chile and so on. But lets give to San Francisco what belongs to it. San Francisco is beautiful ( despite its not the "most beautiful" of course). But what to say about the Golden Gate Bridge? The SF/Oakland Bay Bridge? The Presidio Area, Market Street? The cable cars? Union Square?. Come on! San Fran is really very, very beautiful. In fact, I think that it is the MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE UNITED STATES!

Rio has a beautiful setting and people, but it has dirty streets, tons of crime, graffitti, and a corrupt government, [this is coming from a local] so let's not compare it to San Francisco. This isn't a competition, and it's the most beautiful city in the posters' opinion, so respect that.

And like Rio, San Francisco is famous to be a very, very liberal city. (Remember the 60's and 70's the Berkley University, the gay movement!). That's great!

San Francisco is truly a beautiful city in the United States. I like the vibe of the city, its great! I went there once in the 90's and then most recently, a few months ago and yes I will definitely come back!

Here's a tip: Once you're there, if possible, WALK everywhere you go! You'll take in SO MUCH MORE of the city.

I'll respect your opnion, but I must say that this is soooo not the case.

There is a huge difference between a run-down building and a nondescript one.

Everytime I go to Rio, I get more and more fascinated by its amazing architecture, no matter how poorly preserved some of it might be.

Rio has a lot of character and identity in that department. It entertains me far more than its natural resources.

In case you're wondering, this is the opinion of someone who thinks that SFO is more attractive than Rio...

This has to be my favorite big city! Whether you stay in one of the many budget San Francisco Hotels (http://www.san-francisco.cc/san-francisco-hotels.php) or one of the San Francisco Luxury Hotels (http://www.123world.com/san-francisco/san-francisco-luxury-hotels.php), you will have the trip of your life. The skyline is amazing thanks to all of the amazing skyscrapers. The people are great, the food is wonderful. San Fran rules!

San Francisco is a wonderful city, no doubt, it has a great vibe and the sights are fantastic, lots to do and see, also. Always loved San Francisco!! But, sorry, San Francisco is NOT the most beautiful city in the AMERICAS, but it certainly is the most beautiful city in AMERICA, IMHO. :)

It seems to me that Frisco has the whole package - wonderful natural settings, great architecture and is a vibrant and developed city. I don't understand why people only refers to this city as being a "Gay capital" lol , well at least outside of the U.S . It's a shame that a city like this with so many things to offer "sells" itself to the world in this way, because I'm sure Frisco is great for gays,straights,blacks,hispanics,virgins or so on...many people don't go to SF just because they only know the city as being gay and liberal and this shouldn't happen.

Excellent choice of cities. San Francisco is the clear winner in America, as far as I am concerned anyway, but if I had to choose just one city above them all then it would have to be RIO DE JANEIRO. This city has absolutely EVERYTHING, and u just couldn't put in into words how good the setting is. Rio is a real class act! :drool:

In many streets in SFO, especially downtown, looks like Manhattan due to the "Manhattanization" the city experienced during the 70s when the municipality permitted more high rise constructions in Lower Market St. Sometimes SFO it's called the New York of the West.

Castro Street seems to be very...atractive

I like SF, except the weather.

Having been to San Fran, i thought it was more of a pleasant than beautiful city. Its not ugly but most of the city felt quite temporary to me as most of the houses were of wood (which to my British eyes is quite different). The prettiest part around the city hall didnt really work for me as there were lots of homeless and weird people. As a tourist i also found there was very little if anything i wasnt expecting. Its was as if the city had already sold / marketed everythng the city had to offer. I think it was also stupidity on my part but i was expecting a more interesting cityscape than the grid its on. Just to clarify i stayed at the Mark hopkins Intercontinental so my views on the city wernt marred by my location or accomodation.

With all of my travels in the America's I would say San Francisco's beauty is mediocre at best. I like San Francisco but think it is highly overrated in the beauty department. I remember being underwhelmed the first time I visited and after living in Oakland for a year I saw more beauty in the other side of the Bay. No other American city has the critical mass of homeless and weirdos as San Francisco. Walking down Market Street at night is like a zombie tour. Some people like that I suppose.

Quebec City, Montreal, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Baltimore, New Orleans and Chicago are better examples of architectural eye candy. I like a wide variety of masonry buildings in my cities. San Francisco does not have staying power like the buildings of the Northeast because many of the homes are wooden. Wooden homes in cities are good in earthquake zones. SF's seismic dilemma has rendered the look and feel of a city that is temporary.

I tend to agree with Philadweller, I like S.F. a lot but find Chicago, New York and Washington more interesting and stimulating. There's no denying its wonderful location by the bay but that can't compare with the stunning location of Rio de Janeiro, or Sydney. Architecturally I think probably Buenos Aires is the best combination of old and new in the Americas but it's always difficult to give a definite "best" as there are so many aspects that make up a great city.
Still, S.F. has quite a lot going for it, pity about so many "drop outs"!

San Francisco, like New York & Buenos Aires, is pedestrian-friendly, a wonderful city for walking. Sadly, the same can't be said of the rest of the metropolitan (as opposed to suburban) American cities like Chicago, Washington, Philly or Boston. They lack that overall, busy street-life feel that SanFran, B.A. & NYC have.

Of course I will not argue with you. Yours is a very particular point of view and so is mine. But if you consider world wide preferences and tastes, you might agree that, Rio, New York, LA are... how could I say this?..., more beloved...So, one can consider them far more beautiful than San Francisco, though I consider SF a very beutiful city also!

San Francisco is indeed the most beautiful city of the US. I really like the old districts...They are full of life and you can tell from the pictures that there is always something to do! It's one of the only US cities where would feel at home as a European. Cities like Dallas, Houston, Denver,....,Kansas city are only empty shells. At night mouse take over the city center... Although there is also this hideous sprawl between SF and SJ and across the bay in Oakland...

"Beauty" is such a subjective thing that I do wonder about ambitious titles such as this. I enjoy the photos very much, however! :)

by the huge amount of the homeless in front of the city hall.
But don`t get me wrong I love San Fran and I find it the most

The city is improved a lot since 2001 .There are many changes happening here. South of Market is a good example. New stores, buildings and restaurants are being built every day.

This is One Ricoh Hill Building. The TransBay Terminal Plan will be built on the cross street of this building. When it is completed, it will improved the financial District, AT and T Park, and Embarcadero.

I know that this nice city to live cause I happen to live here, and I like it.

It is a beautiful day in San Francisco. I just show you some pictures I took when I am on the boat with friends to celebrate the Fleet Week and Columbus’s Day. This was the biggest and best Fleet Week in more than twenty years. It is fun to enjoy the sights and sounds of military and the Blue Angels. People get to greet and thank service men and women who put the country first. Happy Columbus Day, everyone!!

definately, one of my favorite American cities.
