View Full Version : Problems installing Rush Hour
rkvta September 29th, 2004, 09:49 AM Hi i wonder if anyone here can help me...
i received Rush Hour last night and tried to install it on my PC, but it only got to installing 10% (just after or during install of simcity_2.dat) before a box came up saying 'unable to install, required file is corrupt or not found'
(or some words to that effect).
I wasn't sure if it meant the files on the install CD, or on my pc, so to be 100% sure i uninstalled Sim City 4, ran the RH install again (no luck), then ran the install against the patched version. After doing this all over again i gave up. i tried this on 2 different drives (plextor px-708a DVD and pioneer DVD-106 with exactly the same problems)
Question:
Is this a well known Rush Hour CD-Rom problem (maybe a dodgy batch) or could it be something else - my copies of both SC4 And RH are legit and legal.
i don't fancy a 2 week wait for a new disk (i ordered it online!)
cheers,
Frustrated of Zürich!!!
Syd-Hk September 29th, 2004, 02:16 PM u MUST have simcity 4 installed on your computer, then install RUSH HOUR ON TOP of it.

maybe i didn't make myself clear... this is what i did:
1. tried to install RH with SC4 (latest patch) = no luck
2. uninstalled SC4, reinstalled without patch & tried to install RH = no luck
3. patched SC4 with latest patch & tried to install RH = no luck
4. uninstalled SC4 and deleted the directories and folders (backing up my region first :) ) - reinstalled SC4, tried to install RH = no luck
5. patched SC4 again, tried to install RH again = no luck
6. got VERY pissed off and started swearing at the computer
7. started to sulk
8. tried EA support - no such problems before on database
9. got a bit more pissed off
i think you get the idea.
btw. i tested on two different drives so i doubt it is the CD-reader causing the problem...

im not sure but or certain games, like roller coaster tycoon 2, it does not work on one of my cd drives, so if you have more than one drive try using another one. if you dont have one , use your friend's computer to try the cd.
rkvta October 1st, 2004, 09:39 AM OK guys, this is what i heard from EA - i've not had the time to try it out yet, but if it works i'll be happy, i've posted it below so anyone who might have the same problem can get it sorted without any problems (i'm happy now i didn't send the disc back - that would REALLY have been a bummer :) )
so here goes:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting EA technical support. I am sorry that you are having difficulty.
We have noticed this happening on Some systems. It is caused by a combination of programs and permissions that may be installed or set on your system. To get around this issue we have a solution, which includes going into the Registry and Safe Mode on your system. **Both of these can cause damage to your system, Please do not play around or remove any other files other then what we have listed below as you could potentially harm your system.**
Below you will find instruction on how to do this.
First we want to Uninstall Sim City 4 and RushHour
We have to go into your Windows registry and remove the parts of the game program that were not removed from your system. We will be focusing on 2 files that were installed with the game into your registry.
Now we will remove the keys for Sim City 4 from your registry. To do this, follow the steps below;
1. Click on Start then go to Run.
2. Type in regedit and click OK.
3. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to a folder labeled Software.
5. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to a folder labeled Maxis.
6. You will see a folder labeled "Sim City 4".
7. Right click once on this folder; a menu will appear.
8. Select the delete option and left-click; this will remove the folder. The window may take you to the top of the screen. Simply scroll back down to where you were before.
9. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to a folder labeled Microsoft.
10. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to a folder labeled Windows.
11. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to a folder labeled Current Version.
12. Left-Click once on the plus sign next to a folder labeled Uninstall.
13. Locate a folder labeled {611BD998-34B9-4DDA-00AE-0CB4632E86FA}
14. Right click once on this folder; a menu will appear.
15. Select the delete option and left-click; this will remove the folder.
Delete the two Sim City 4 folders located here:
C:\Program Files\Maxis\Sim City 4
and here:
\\My Documents\Sim City 4
You have now removed all entries for Sim City 4 from your system.
To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key"
This should bring up the
"Windows Advanced Options Menu"
Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
Depending on your computer you might get a stuck key message as the computer is booting when you are holding down the F8 key. If you get this then try tapping the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.
When Windows boots up, you should have an Option to login as Administrator.
When it asks you for a password it should be the same as your 1st User account you use to log in normally ---If not then try with no password. Also, If you installed windows yourself, this is the same password it asked you for during the installation.---
At this point you will see the corners of the screen it says "Safe Mode" and your Video display will probably be bad.
You should be able to re-install Sim City 4 and then Rush Hour without an issue. *After each install, the game might try to play, just exit out. Do not continue to play in Safe Mode.*
To exit out of Safe Mode all you need to do is just Restart your computer, like you would normally. Click on Start and choose Shutdown, and then Restart. Your Computer will boot back up into Windows like normal.
The game should now run without any issue.
EricP10 March 7th, 2006, 01:13 AM The info that EA fed you is their automatic first step reply. If you take a look at the instructions, what they are basically telling you to do is to install SimCity 4 then Rush Hour without anything else besides basic windows tasks running. That probably won't help you install the game.
I just figured out what my issue is:
I got the Rush Hour expansion pack off Ebay and began installing it only to find that I had the same issue. At about 10% complete, the game says "unable to locate required file or required file is corrupt." My problem is that I bought Simcity 4 at a legit retailer in Boston and bought the expansion pack from a guy in Australia off Ebay. On the back of my game, it says "not for sale in North America." This compatibility issue is what is most likely causing my error and I have a feeling your error might be similar. I have spent a good deal of time working with computers and would say I'm relatively knowledgable about them. I have tried everything else and this compatibility issue is the only apparent reason why Rush Hour will not install on my computer.
-Eric
P.S. The steps they take you through to remove the registry keys are keys which are removed during the uninstall process anyways
Giorgio March 11th, 2006, 03:52 AM your replying to a thread over 1 year old. The person that had the issue wont come back.
