The Pune Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

With its various green initiatives, The Marriott Hotels & Resorts branded property is the first Marriott International hotel in India to receive the honor.

Since its opening in November 2010, the property has worked towards saving and preserving natural resources and the environment. The Pune Marriott has incorporated and adapted: low VOC emitting materials, reduced landscape water usage by using indigenous plants, use of rapidly renewable materials, 42% energy savings for the building operations, hybrid vehicles, alternative refuelling stations for electric cars, vegetated green roofs, omission of ozone depletion refrigeration mechanical systems and many other environmentally-friendly features.

Further, 100% waste from ongoing operations and 95% of all construction waste are segregated for recycling and diverted from landfills. Fifty percent of all building materials were manufactured within a 500 mile radius saving on transportation cost and lowering emissions.

Also, as a policy the property uses only ‘Green Seal’ certified chemicals in all its housekeeping activities. The hospitality brand also encourages its associates to add to its green ideologies by introducing car-pooling programs.

There are future plans to improve the hotel’s energy efficiency, renewable energy, indoor environmental quality and storm water management techniques.

Marriott has opened a 179-key property Courtyard in the city to serve the needs of the business travelers which is developed by Mumbai-based The Advantage Raheja group. This new Courtyard hotel is the third Marriott property in the city and the second of the brand. This is Marriott's 15th property across India.

A third Courtyard at Chakan and a JW Marriott are under construction and will be opened soon. On this occasion, the company has also announced the launch of its economy brand Fairfield Inn in India. Marriott has 18 more under construction across the country.

Speaking on this occasion, Craig Smith, chief operating officer and vice president, Marriott International-Asia Pacific and Australia said, "For Marriott International India and China are the main growth engines. We have developed over 100 properties across Asia-Pacific region. Currently, we are coming up with 57 hotels in China and 35 in India. Sarovar Hotels & Resorts has brought its economy hotel brand, Hometel, to Pune. It recently opened the Noorya Hometel in Chinchwad, Pune, which comprises of 117 guest rooms and suites. Food and beverage options include Flavours – a multi-cuisine all-day dining restaurant and a bar known as Chill. Other facilities include a fitness centre, swimming pool and banquet and conference facilities, which can accommodate up to 85 guests.

Commenting on the opening of Noorya Hometel, Anil Madhok, MD, Sarovar Hotels & Resorts said, “Pune is an important city and Chinchwad enjoys considerable industrial importance in Maharashtra. Ramee Group of Hotels, which currently operates four-star hotels in Mumbai, Tirupati and Bengaluru, will open its first five-star hotel, Ramee Grand at Shivaji Nagar in Pune in April this year. The upcoming property with 90 rooms will be owned and managed by Ramee Group of Hotels. The approximate amount of investment for the property is Rs 115 crore. In addition, the Group is looking at opening properties in Tier II cities including Baroda, Surat, Nashik, Nagpur etc.

Sudhanshu Singh, Director, Ramee Group of Hotels said, "Although Pune is a sensitive market, we are looking at targeting business clientele. Shivaji Nagar is a corporate hub but doesn't have any five-star hotel, we are hoping to cash in on the same. Besides, we also want to tap the foodies of Pune and hence, we are coming with three F&B outlets namely - The Rasoi with 84 covers, Oriental Fusion with 134 covers and Mirchi Restaurant with 130 covers."

Singh added, "To expand our footprints in India, we are looking at opening five hotels in the next four to five years. This could be a mix of management contracts, JV and ownership in Tier II cities."

The Pune Marriott Hotel and Convention Centre has been reflagged as the first JW Marriott in the Indian city.

The JW Marriott Hotel Pune is India’s third under the luxury brand. The 416-room hotel was built in 2010.

Pune, a city of about 3 million people, is located in western India, about 60 miles southeast of Mumbai.

Marriott International has about two dozen hotels in India, including three Courtyard by Marriott hotels in Pune.

Hospitality chain Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels today said it will invest Rs 1,200 crore over the next 4-5 years to set up four new properties that will add over 800 rooms.
The company, which announced a new brand identity, also said in about the same period of time, it would consider expanding its footprints into global markets.
"Currently, we are developing a property at Cochin which will be operational by the middle of this year. Three more properties are also in the pipeline which will add a total of over 800 new rooms and they will be ready in the next four to five years," Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Chairperson Priya Paul told reporters here.
The other three new properties are at Pune, Kolkata and Jaipur, she added.
Currently the chain has 12 properties with over 1,200 rooms in total. When asked about the investments, Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Managing Director Vijay Dewan said: "Overall it will be Rs 1,200 crore. We are funding it through internal accruals and debt."
While the Cochin property will have 170 rooms, the Pune hotel will have 250 rooms. The company's second hotel in Kolkata will have 350 rooms and the one at Jaipur will have 100 rooms.
Out of the total of Rs 1,200 crore investments, Dewan said the biggest chunk will go to the new Kolkata hotel at Rs 500 crore, followed by Pune at Rs 350 crore. The company will invest about Rs 100 crore to set up the Jaipur property and the rest will be for the Cochin hotel.
Commenting on the company's new brand identity, Paul said: "As we have grown, we realised the need to communicate our brand strength more boldly. We felt this is the time we needed to communicate our brand in a more coherent manner."
The new branding will be rolled out gradually across its properties in India through the year starting April. The hospitality chain has been working on the new
identity for about two years, spending Rs 12 crore. When asked about plans for global markets, she said: "We would love to expand internationally. In four to five years time, we will be actively looking at it."
