Zvartnots Facelift: Yerevan airport to have new terminal this year

An international airport near Armenian capital Yerevan will have a new functioning terminal by the end of this year.


According to the company managing the airport, by its technical parameters and passenger service quality the new arrivals and departures hall, due to open in October, will be the best in the region.

“At the end of the year we shall, in fact, have a new airport that will fully correspond to the International Air Transport Association’s B class airports (IATA rates airports according to A, B, C, D classes) which will double the potential of the existing airport,” said Zvartnots International Airport deputy director Andranik Shkhyan.

Zvartnots Airport opened in 1961. In 2001 the Armenian government and the Corporacion America group of Eduardo Eurnekian, an Argentine billionaire of Armenian descent, signed an agreement under which the Armenia International Airports company assumed 30-year concession management of the Zvartnots airport.

During this period large-scale activities on the improvement of the airport’s facilities and conditions have been carried out. At present, work is underway at 34,000 square meters of public area for a new terminal, for which an investment of $160 million has already been made.

According to Shkhyan, the new complex will offer 46 check-in desks instead of currently available 24, which will help avoid queues and large concentrations of people. The new facility will have separate spacious departure and arrival halls, a two-storey car park on a territory of 25,000 square meters for 600 cars at a time, or three times as many parking lots as are available today. Annually the new terminal will be able to serve up to 3 million passengers, instead of the current 1.6 million.

“During the past four years we have seen our passenger traffic increasing at an annual rate of 8-12 percent. The new airport will be able to accept up to 10 flights an hour instead of five flights today,” said Shkhyan, adding that the new complex will be fully fitted out with necessary equipment and will be able to properly serve also transit passengers.

Shkhyan also said that the current airport service rates were set in 2002 and have not been revised since then.

“Our tariffs are competitive as compared to a number of airports in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey and are lower even than those at the airports of Vienna and London,” he said, adding that by its features the Yerevan airport twice exceeds the airports of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

A presidential building is also planned at the airport. This facility will be exclusively for serving high-ranking guests.

The total volume of investment for the construction of the new airport complex reaches $244 million. Funding is provided by Corporacion America and three banks. Most of the work is carried out by Armenia-based companies, but there are also contractors from Slovenia and Germany. A total of 600 workers are involved in the construction project.

The old airport building, according to Shkhyan, will continue to operate, but not as an airport.

“The old building will most likely become an administrative center and also a public area where it will be possible to organize conferences,” said Shkhyan.

Before the new complex is completed, passengers arriving at Zvartnots get outside through the VIP hall.

The plan of modern Yerevan’s original architect to build a tower in the yard of Government Building N1 in Yerevan’s central Republic Square has become a subject of broad discussions among specialists, as well as among the general public.


The construction of a Government Building dome designed still by 20th-century architect Alexander Tamanyan was delayed for different reasons, but within several weeks this work will begin. The estimated cost of the project is $10 million dollars.

It is envisaged that already in two years the city’s main square will have a 50-meter-tall tuf-made tower within a diameter of 30 meters, which corresponds to about 13-14-storeyed building.

Armenia’s chief architect Narek Sargsyan thinks the planned tower will drastically change the image of the square and will complete the government building project.

However, some architects warn that the construction of this tower will distort the Tamanyan master plan for Yerevan.

President of Armenia’s Union of Architects Mkrtich Minasyan says that no specialist and public discussions have been held around the construction project, which, if held, would have helped avoid future architectural mistakes. Nevertheless, according to him, architects are against “distorting the Tamanyan project”.

“What Tamanyan foresaw for there was a distribution hall and nothing else. Meanwhile, in the current government’s decision it is written that a multistory administrative building will be constructed there and that it will house two ministries: the Ministries of Justice and the Diaspora. That is, the submitted project is completely new, because of which the distortion of the Tumanyan design is inevitable.”

Երևանի «Զվարթնոց» օդանավակայանում ներկայումս ընթանում է վերանորոգման աշխատանքների III փուլը (օդանավակայանի հանրային գոտու նոր տերմինալի շինարարություն), որը սկսվել է 2008թ և կավարտվի այս տարվա հոկտեմբերին: Երրորդ փուլում կատարվել է 160 միլիոն ԱՄՆ դոլարի ներդրում, տեղեկացնում են «Արմենիա» Միջազգային Օդանավակայաններ» ՓԲԸ-ի լրատվական ծառայությունից:

Ըստ աղբյուրի, օդանավակայանի հանրային գոտու նոր տերմինալի շինարարությունը կամբողջացնի նոր համալիրը: Այս նոր` 34.000քառ. մետր տարածք զբաղեցնող շինությունը ամբողջովին կփոխարինի Համալիր 1-ին: Հաշվառման սրահը կունենա ընդհանուր առմամբ 46 հաշվառման սեղաններ և հաշվառման կրպակներ: Նոր Համալիրի III փուլի շենքում կտեղակայվեն բարձրակարգ ուղևորների սպասարկման և դիվանագիտական սրահներ: Հանրային սրահի մուտքի առջև կկառուցվի նոր կայանատեղի: Նոր ավտոմոբիլային կայանատեղի ենթակառուցվածքը երկու մակարդակ ունեցող շինություն է, որի ողջ տարողունակությունը սահմանված է 600 ավտոմեքենաների համար: Նոր Համալիրի հետ կայանատեղը ուղղակի կերպով կմիանա յուրաքանչյուր շահագործման մակարդակի հետ: Կայանատեղի շենքի ողջ տարածքը կազմում է 20.000քմ:

Կիրառվում են կապարառետինե կրիչներով մեկուսիչներ, որոնք սեյսմիկ վտանգը նվազեցնող ամենատարածված և փորձված համակարգերն են: Կապարառետինե մեկուսիչները սեյսմիկ վտանգը կարող են նվազեցնել 65 տոկոսով:

Տեղեկացնում են, որ կառուցվածքը իր թափանցիկության շնորհիվ ամբողջությամբ նորամուծություն է: Մյուս կողմից նորամուծություն է նաև ենթասալերի կիրառումը: Կիրառվել է ամրացված ենթասալերի անցքերով համակարգը, որի ներսում պոլիէթիլենային գնդեր են: Այս համակարգը թույլ է տալիս 30 տոկոսով կրճատել ենթասալերի քաշը, ինչը կարևոր է սեյսմակայունության տեսանկյունից: Տանիքի 40%-ը ապակեպատ է: Ապակե տանիքը սարքավորված կլինի ապակե շերտավարագույրային համակարգով, որը նվազեցնում է արևի ուղիղ ճառագայթումը հարավից, սակայն թույլ է տալիս, որ արևի լույսը ներթափանցի շենք:

Նախագիծը նպատակ ունի արտաքին ծածկի համար օգտագործել ժամանակակից տեխնոլոգիական համակարգ` օդափոխվող ճակատամաս, որը ունի հակաանձրևային ապակեպատ շերտ, բացառում է խոնավությունը, օպտիմալացնում է եղանակի ազդեցությունը, ունի փոքր քաշ, սեյսմակայուն է: Նոր համալիրը կունենա կենտրոնական ջեռուցման, օդափոխության և օդորակման ժամանակակից և բարձրակարգ համակարգեր:

Տրամադրված տեղեկանքի համաձայն, շինարարության համար օգտագործվում է.

Շինարությունը նախատեսվում է ավարտել 2011թ, շինարարության ավարտից հետո Զվարթնոց միջազգային օդանավակայանը կկարողանա սպասարկել տարեկան մինչև 3.500.000 ուղևոր:

В конце этого года планируется завершить строительство нового терминала аэропорта «Звартноц».
«Наш аэропорт в регионе, если сравнить с Азербайджаном и Грузией, имеет вдвое больше возможностей как в плане обслуживания пассажиров, так и в плане применяемых технологий», - в среду в беседе с Радио Азатутюн сказал заместитель главного менеджера компании «Армения - международные аэропорты» Андраник Шхкян.

Новый терминал, по его словам, позволит удвоить нынешние возможности аэропорта. «В частности, у нас будут новые стойки регистрации. Вместо ныне действующих 24 их будет 46. Также в аэропорту будут более просторные залы вылета и прибытия», - сообщил он.

Шхкян подчеркнул, что действующие в аэропорту тарифы не пересматривались с 2002 года. «Мы не предусматриваем какого-либо пересмотра. Тарифы конкурентоспособны, по сравнению с некоторыми аэропортами Азербайджана, Грузии и Турции», - сказал он.

Говоря о транзитных рейсах, Андраник Шхкян отметил: «Терминал будет полностью оснащен всеми необходимыми принадлежностями, чтобы у нас были транзитные пассажиры».

На сегодняшний день аэропорт ежегодно обслуживает 1 миллион 100 тысяч пассажиров, после введения в эксплуатацию нового терминала он сможет обслуживать до 3 миллионов пассажиров.

Кредитные средства на строительство нового терминала предоставил также Азиатский банк развития. Из этих средств должна быть также выделена сумма на переселение жильцов четырех расположенных на территории аэропорта зданий, в том числе двух общежитий.
Новое здание должно быть построено на улице Бабаджаняна.

Пресс-секретарь компании «Армения – международные аэропорты» Геворг Абрамян сообщил Радио Азатутюн, что для людей, проживающих на территории аэропорта, планируется построить новое здание, территория под строительство была выделена 10 дней назад, и аэропорт осуществляет соответствующие шаги.

A Hydro-Electric project for Southern Armenia.

YEREVAN, February 10. /ARKA/. Construction of Meghri hydro-power station (south of Armenia) is planned to start in 2011 and finish in five years, said Armenian Energy and Nature resource Minister Armen Movsisyan.

Armenia and Iran plan to build two powerful hydro-power stations in South Caucasus. From the Armenian side the station will be located in Meghri and from the Iranian side – in Karakichilar. Each of the stations will annually produce 793 million kilowatt/hour energy. The capacity of Meghri hydro-power station will be 130 megawatt.

“Currently we are deciding the issues of allocation of lands and provision of licenses for starting the works in reasonable dates”, said Movsisyan.

On Thursday, Government of Armenia made amendments in the draft decision as of December 4, 2008 envisaging reconciliation of differences between the agreement on the permission of construction and earlier adopted project of hydro-power station.

On October 15, 2010, Energy Ministers of Armenia and Iran signed a number of mutual agreements and memorandums, a well as agreement on construction of Meghri hydro-power station on the border river Araks.

Construction of Meghri hydro-power station is assessed $323 million which is invested by Iranian investment company. In accordance with the agreement, the energy produced by hydro-power station will be delivered to Iran within 15 years, after which the station will be transferred to the Armenian side without compensatio

Some European investors are also thinking of constructing Nine Small Hydroelectric plants. Syunik Region is Armenias Southern province. It also is where the above Hydroelectric project is taking place.

Several businessmen from Slovakia, the Czech Repulic and Austria have promised to make large-scale investments in hydro-power plant construction projects in Syunik Region and the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

At a news conference on Friday, Ashot Grigoryan, the president of an organization called Forum of Armenian Associations in Europe, introduced the European investors’ plans. He said Czech-based Armenian businessmen Senik Julhakyan, who heads two major energy companies (Euroenergo Holding and Cheshsky-Dvor), as well as the directors of Sanna Suafi and ABB holdings, Milan Polak and Miroslav Lines, are currently in Armenia to study possibilities of strengthening Armenian-Czech ties.

Euroenergo Holding plans to build nine small hydro-power plants in Syunik at a total cost of 185 million euros. Senik Julhakyan said the construction will be carried out within the 5-6 years to come but the amount of investments still has to be clarified.

After a UIA competition attracting 274 entries, no winner has been appointed for the International Business Centre and Intercontinental Hotel bound for Yerevan in Armenia. Instead a second and third prize were awarded, leaving the design for the Mercedes Benz-led project in the air.
