View Full Version : Central Copenhagen at night and day
Nightsky September 29th, 2004, 04:10 PM This thread is also about pictures from Copenhagen taken last Sunday, both after and before dark. It is concentrated at the sights at Strøget, from Kongens Nytorv to Radhuspladsen, almost in order:

Kongens Nytorv. Recently under reconstruction, Copenhagen's 2nd largest square is where Strøget begins.
To the left is Hotel D'Angleterre, Denmark's most fashionable hotel.

Magasine du Nord is also situated at Kongens Nytorv. It is Scandinavia's largest and most fashionable
department store.

sdes September 29th, 2004, 04:28 PM Very nice pictures Nightsky!
"The central station after dark."
That's a very cool photo :)
cphdude September 29th, 2004, 06:27 PM Very nice pictures Nightsky!
"The central station after dark."
That's a very cool photo :)
Yeah i agree thats a pretty great pic, thay all are by the way. I also like the one of Ørstedsparken. For a spilt second there it reminded me of summer. And thats ironic, cos summer is the absolut worst time to visit that park... :runaway:
Vespa September 29th, 2004, 06:52 PM Thats some very nice shots Nightsky. I also think that "The Central Station after dark" is an amazing photo
Jarmo K September 29th, 2004, 07:29 PM superb! CPH is really stunning!
Nightsky September 29th, 2004, 08:41 PM Thanks, "The Central Station after dark" is also my own favourite. My night pictures use to be so blury, but in that case there was a wall just above the rails to put the camera on.
John September 29th, 2004, 08:42 PM Very beautiful :okay:
although I'd suggest to get a tripod because some nightshots seem to be blurry ;)
but thanks for showing this, Cph must be the nicest Scandinavian city together with Sthlm :)
Edd September 29th, 2004, 09:06 PM Beautiful photos except maybe a few blurry ones. The colors of that pink theater looks very unusual to me. From this picture it seems that it's still a summer time only a bit "cloudy day": http://skyline.250free.com/Cph_Orstedsparken.jpg
Monkey September 30th, 2004, 08:01 AM Say, Nightsky, you do get around!
Thank you for taking us with you on this beautiful walk! :)
You give a really nice description of what we see as we're going along -- a super fine thread! :okay:
And of course Copenhagen is magnificent, and beautifully presented here. You're right, the roof of the Boerse building is unusual and exciting, but its spiral tower must be unique.
I'm green with envy when I think of how (comparatively) easily Europeans can travel and see different worlds!
tournesol September 30th, 2004, 09:29 AM Thanks for another nice thread of CPH potos, Nightsky! :)
"Central Station after dark" is my favourite too. I just wish the politicians would do something about the big hole infront of it. It would make a much nicer square if covered...
And a bit of news: The Scala complex you mentioned, is about to be torn down and a new 10 floor hotel build instead.
Monkey September 30th, 2004, 09:44 AM Yes, that big hole in front of the Central Station is not what you'd call a place of beauty. ;) I guess it would swallow enormous sums to cover, though.
designwise September 30th, 2004, 11:48 AM WOW ! Superb photos of a very beautiful city !!!!!! Thanks for sharing these pics with us !!!!
btw : Scandinavia's biggest department store is Stockmann in Helsinki. :)
cphdude September 30th, 2004, 01:30 PM And a bit of news: The Scala complex you mentioned, is about to be torn down and a new 10 floor hotel build instead.
I dont think it will be 10 stories though, they are talking about raising it with 2 stories. And its not 8 stories now so....I think we' re talking about 5-6 stories.
tournesol September 30th, 2004, 02:14 PM @cphdude
The height drawing on the city website shows an overall height of 8 floors,
but with 10 floors at the corner towards Vesterbrogade.
Kaneda September 30th, 2004, 02:18 PM Nice pics ! Really great! :okay:
Tearing down Scala? That sucks, for some reason i've allways liked that building. That, together with the cinema has allways been the reason why I think Axel Torv is such a cool place.
Couldent they just build the hotel on top of Scala, that would be nice. :)
DenverDane September 30th, 2004, 02:37 PM My understanding was that they would keep the Scala building and make it into a hotel instead, not tear it down...
BTW, another nice round of CPH pictures, Nightsky! A correction: D'Angleterre is to the right in the first picture, not left.. ;)
tournesol September 30th, 2004, 03:56 PM My understanding was that they would keep the Scala building and make it into a hotel instead, not tear it down...
You're probably right. But facades and interior will completly change, so in reality it will look like a brand new building. Which the upper part will be ;)
I'll try to post some drawings later...
tournesol September 30th, 2004, 05:36 PM Here's a couple of small renderings of the scala project:
http://img45.exs.cx/img45/8926/d6fnyscala.jpg
btw, Nightsky - sorry for hijacking your thread like this...
Benni October 1st, 2004, 12:58 AM Why can't I see them...?
Nightsky October 1st, 2004, 11:55 AM @Whose Homepage. I think many Europeans are green with envy when thinking of that you can travel all around California! :) Except for Copenhagen, there are not so many exciting places around Malmö. Ferries can be expensive.
@designwise. Thanks for telling this. I have always heard that Magasine is the largest department store in Scandinavia.
@tournesoul: Don't worry, it's only good that you increase the number of replies. I was very surprised about the La Scala thing. I have always thought it is a nice and a little bit cosmpolitan building  , it is weird to tear it down. Hope the hotel will be built on the top or any other place.
@Benni: Do you mean my pics? In that case it is strange.
tournesol October 1st, 2004, 12:29 PM Magasin still claims to be the biggest in Scandinavia, but I don't know - maybe they use the "3-country-definition" of Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway & Denmark).
It's easier to be the biggest that way... ;)
cphdude October 1st, 2004, 01:44 PM @cphdude
The height drawing on the city website shows an overall height of 8 floors,
but with 10 floors at the corner towards Vesterbrogade.
Oh, okay. As always, you are better informed than me....Are the pics from the scala website?
As far as the magasin thing goes, i think there's different deffinitions on shoppingcenters/departmentstores etc. I remember we hed the discussion with Fields when it oppend last year...
tournesol October 1st, 2004, 02:30 PM ....Are the pics from the scala website?
No, they are from the city's (kbh kommune)
As far as the magasin thing goes, i think there's different deffinitions on shoppingcenters/departmentstores etc. I remember we hed the discussion with Fields when it oppend last year...
Yes, I remember. Different definitions can real confuse things... :)
ch1le October 1st, 2004, 02:33 PM Magasin still claims to be the biggest in Scandinavia, but I don't know - maybe they use the "3-country-definition" of Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway & Denmark).
It's easier to be the biggest that way... ;)
thats cruel, finland is Scandinavian !
Nightsky October 4th, 2004, 05:21 PM Shopping center is a large building with independently owned stores(often chain stores like H&M and Stadium).
Department store is one big store with different departments, all owned by the same company. It often has more than one floor.
So Field's is a shopping mall and Magasin a department store.
About the Scandinavian thing. In Sweden, most schools teach that The Nordic countries are Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland if I remember right(it was quite a while) while just Sweden, Denmark, Norway are Scandinavian.
Most people consider all Nordic countries as Scandinavian though.
designwise October 4th, 2004, 05:58 PM Finland is Scandinavia and all dictionaries will state that Finland & Iceland can be defined as being Scandinavian and Nordic. The Scandinavian peninsula runs through the northern tip of Finland. Finno-scandia compromises of Finland, Sweden & Norway.
Scandi peninsula :
http://geography.about.com/library/faq/blqzscandinavian.htm
www.dictionary.com says :
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=scandinavia
"A region of northern Europe consisting of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Finland, Iceland, and the Faeroe Islands are often included in the region."
mlm October 4th, 2004, 06:12 PM There seems to be a lot of confusion about which countries are actually "Scandinavian" and which are "Nordic". Some include Finland and Iceland as Scandinavian, while others don't. Some also says Denmark isn't a part of Scandinavia. I'm not sure there is any "official" definition. Here's a few pages explining (or trying to) the situation:
Nationmaster about Scandinavia (http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Scandinavia)
Scandinavica - Scandinavian and Nordic (http://www.scandinavica.com/culture/society/nordic.htm)
Nightsky October 7th, 2004, 12:45 AM We are all free to call us Scandinavians if we want to! :)
(If you come from one of these countries of course)
tournesol October 10th, 2004, 12:17 PM Oups, I never intended to start at debate about this :), just trying to explain that marketing people usualy would choose whatever definition fits their purposes...
Nightsky October 13th, 2004, 07:58 PM Not me either, but at least it made the thread live a little longer!
Nemo November 4th, 2004, 02:58 PM Very nice pictures!!!!
LoveCPH November 6th, 2004, 05:37 PM Det nogle pæne billeder... :-)
Estboy November 7th, 2004, 10:58 AM Very nice tour and superb pics Nightsky :applause:
Nightsky November 7th, 2004, 05:32 PM Thank you, I'm glad you like the pics despite the weather was bad! I haven't been taking photographs in Copenhagen until the latest years. It's not so fun without a digicam.
onetwothree November 14th, 2004, 01:31 PM Whoa sure a lot of danes in here. I would never have thought that :)
Nice with some CPH pictures, and I'm also glad someone else (People from outside DK) likes it.

Kaneda November 14th, 2004, 05:25 PM Another dane ! Great! Welcome StarFish !
LatvianGG November 14th, 2004, 06:09 PM Very interesting to see how similar it is to Amsterdam - Central Station, City Hall, all important spots and buildings are about the same style, maybe a bit different architecture. Also the shopping mall you showed... in Amsterdam there is very similar building - also a shopping centre - called "Bijenkorf" ...
LoveCPH November 14th, 2004, 06:11 PM Bare fordi der kommer en ny dansker går I sku alle i selvsving

I have also thought about similarities to Amsterdam. I was there many years ago and I remember the department store Bijenkorf. I think the similarities depends on that there are many canals in both cities and that renaissance architecture is common in both cities and the inhabitants are very "freeminded".
norreport November 30th, 2004, 02:05 PM are radhus huset and the other one mentioned the tallest buildings in KBH?? i thought the carlsberg or radison sas buildings were higher than those towers...even the scandinavian hotel seems taller...:? can anyone tell us their heights??? :hi:
