Tmac.......Dhaka Sheraton is Awesome. I love it. If you look around some of the Dhaka highrises, seems like good amout of construction still going on & couple of more highrises are still going up. Incredible. In couple of pictures, Dhaka seems to have more highrises in cluster than even Karachi. I know both are financial capitals of their respected counties but I never thought I will give Dhaka a slight edge over Karachi.

Tmac......can you post upcoming highrise list of Dhaka. I'm sure there is lot more than this.

Hindustani, thank you very much for the compliment. You are right..Dhaka has about few hundred buildings under construction right now. In this I only posted pictures of individual buildings, later I will be posting pictures of Dhaka skyline...clusters of buildings. It has a pretty nice skyline for a south asian country. I know many people have been surprised after seeing the pics. Dhaka is a modern city with modern structures. It's not as poor as it may seem from the outside. There are so many modern GLASS buildings in Dhaka, it's incredible. Stay tuned...

ps. SUNCITY had mentioned earlier in this forum that he thinks Dhaka is second only to Mumbai in terms of modern architecture in that region.

Hindustani, thank you very much for the compliment. You are right..Dhaka has about few hundred buildings under construction right now. In this I only posted pictures of individual buildings, later I will be posting pictures of Dhaka skyline...clusters of buildings. It has a pretty nice skyline for a south asian country. I know many people have been surprised after seeing the pics. Dhaka is a modern city with modern structures. It's not as poor as it may seem from the outside. There are so many modern GLASS buildings in Dhaka, it's incredible. Stay tuned...

ps. SUNCITY had mentioned earlier in this forum that he thinks Dhaka is second only to Mumbai in terms of modern architecture in that region.

Wow. Incredible. Well. that says it. Dhaka is 2nd only to Mumbai in skyscrapers activity in south Asia. unbelievable amount of midrises & fair amount of highrises as well. & looks like lot more highrises are upcoming. Dhaka is officially a Mumbai's evil twin now. :)

If I am not mistaken, then Dhaka is the only city in South Asia, where they have a hand-rickshaw pullers union. It's startling - they have more than 4 million rickshaws on the streets of that city. Actually rickshaws are more handy than proper vehicles in a city which is prone to flooding!

there are no hand-rickshaws in Bangladesh. They are the tri-cycle type. The rickshaws cannot ply on major streets in Dhaka. They have been banning rickshaws slowly from all the major streets in Dhaka. By 2008, rickshaws are going to be phased out of Dhaka.

I think Kolkata is the only city in South Asia with hand pulled rickshaws and unions. Long plans to ban them have met with stiff resistance from mentally backward social activists who have their priorities and concepts of modern world economy wrong. And the fatcats (in cash and weight) of Burrabazar are the ones who patronize these rickshaws because they want to save 50 paise.

TMAC, I think it's time to do two threads - call one the best of Dhaka and put your favorite Dhaka pics in them.

And start a new thread - Skyscrapers II and add your new collections to them. Provide a link to this thread.

The current page is taking quite a bit of time to load even on a fast connection because there are so many pics!

Shun overtaking to help manage traffic
PM urges, laying foundations of 37-storey car park at Motijheel
UNB, Dhaka (Jan 20th 2004)

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday laid the foundation of the second commercial-cum-parking complex in the capital's business hub Motijheel, renewing her call to follow queue system in driving vehicles as well as in all other sectors.

"If we can ensure curbing the practice of overtaking, it will not only bring discipline in the traffic management, but also in national attitude," she said.

The prime minister again called for private sector initiatives to construct parking lot in the capital.

The 37-storied new project, to be implemented in three years, has been named "City Centre" that will have nine floors of parking facilities for about 500 cars at a time.

In mid 2003, Belhasa Accom JV of the United Arab Emirates expressed its intention to the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) to develop the plot on a 77:23 ratio basis under the project, which is likely to cost Tk 70 crore.

Apart from the total floor area of 479,500 square feet, which includes three floors of hospitality services, the building complex will also have a rooftop helipad.

Ministers, MPs, city planners and local leaders attended the function, also addressed by Local Govern-ment, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, DCC Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka, Works and Housing Minister Mirza Abbas, Managing Director of Belhasa Accom Majid Belhasa and DCC Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Habibur Rahman.

Four-and-a-half-month ago, the prime minister also inaugurated the work on the first commercial-cum-parking complex in Motijheel Commercial Area.

Addressing the function, the prime minister hoped that the implementation of the two commercial-cum-parking complexes would reduce traffic congestion in the busy commercial area to a large extent.

She pointed out that the Dhaka city was not planned as a capital of an independent country and the matter was overlooked for a long even after independence, leading to unplanned growth and traffic problem.

She also said the government was contemplating to set up underground railway in the city for which foreign assistance has been sought.

City Bank to construct 34-storey HQ

The City Bank Limited is going to construct its 34-storey headquarters at Dilkusha in Dhaka.

"It's the first local private commercial bank to have its headquarters in its own building," said The City Bank Managing Director Abbas Uddin Ahmed at the foundation laying ceremony yesterday.

The high rise will be constructed on one and a half bigha of land. The construction work is expected to be completed within three years.

The City Bank managing director said they are going to start online banking facilities for their clients from 27 March this year on the eve of the bank's 20th founding anniversary. "The service will be the first of its kind offered by any local private commercial bank," he added.

The managing director said they are going to start Islamic banking service within a few days.

The foundation stone was jointly laid by the bank's Chairman Deen Mohammad and Founder Director Anwar Hossain. The City Bank Vice-chairman Aziz-Al-Kaiser was also present.

:) Dhaka is looking great, its seems Dhaka is changing very fast ,if it carry's on in this pace , with its highly educated population and growing middle class it's sure going to be one of the leading cities in asia if not the world.

The monsoons are probably not the best time to take pics of buildings/streets in South Asia.

Work for tallest sky-scraper begins

Construction work is under way for the ‘City Centre’, the tallest sky-scraper in Bangladesh, reports BSS.
The 37-storey building at Motijheel, which will be completed by 2007, will have three basement floors and nine floors for car-parking. The total floor area will be 4.795 lakh square feet. About 450 to 500 cars can be parked in the building.

Out of total 37 floors, 25 will be used for offices and lobbies while three floors will be kept for hospitality. The building has entry points from all sides. A helipad will be built on the roof of the centre.
The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) with the assistance from the Belhasa-Accom JV Developer Company will construct the City Centre. DCC sources told BSS that the Corporation would possess 77 per cent of the building while the rest 23 per cent would remain under the control of the developer.

The sources said in absence of a car-parking facility at Motijheel and its adjoining areas, cars have been parked haphazardly along the roads. The situation will improve with the construction of the City Centre.

There will be four high-speed passenger lifts and two panoramic lifts with an independent air conditioning system on every floor. Besides, provisions for CCTV, PABX, announcing system and power sub-station with be kept in the building. Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia laid the foundation of the tallest building last year.

Dhaka has very nice buildings and I must add that several roads look very nice as well. As somebody said, Dhaka rocks. On my next trip to India, I would definitely like to go to Bangladesh. I have friends there (people who studied with me) who have been calling me for long, but seeing Dhaka is an added attraction after seeing these pics.

I read about three more 5 star hotels under construction in Dhaka.(Radisson Garden is one of them.)Did you post any of those pics on other thread?

Nice ones of Gulshan lake and Badda. when were those pictures taken? the lake looks very bloated and the areas behind badda-beraid also seem flooded.

Sometimes i look Dhaka pics and wonder why it doesn't seem to be very crowded...think about Bangladesh with over 1 mil. habitants.....meanwhile,my Saigon is always like a school's canteen.

Dhaka seems to be a nice city.. Actually its completely opposite of what i have been reading or seeing on television. Western media tends to focus only on poverty, chaotic street scenes, pollution, riots etc etc. I was not aware of all the modern development in Dhaka. I am glad on behalf of all Bangladeshis that their capital is witnessing positive development and progress. I wish that rest of the country will see a similar change :)

Kawran Bazar is a fast growing commercial area with many modern new developments. In the foreground a 20 storied construction of DH Tower is taking place, whilst next to it there is a proposed 20 storey commercial building cum shopping mall called ZS Tower, and in the backgound are TK Bhaban, Bangladesh Shilpa Rin Shangstha building, Wasa building etc.

No problem Tanzirian. I am trying to get some more pics on the latest developments. Dhaka is growing so fast it is hard to keep up. I believe Tmac is doing a sterling job and we should all contribute like the other threads. By the way where is you location?

My location is Columbia, SC, USA. I haven't been to Dhaka since 2000 and probably won't go back till 2008 so I'll take some pics at that time.
I do have some books with some nice photos (not necessarily skyscrapers) which I would like to scan and post but I haven't figured out how to upload pics yet. My work keeps me busy but I will get round to it sometime.

Nice to meet you Tanzirian. I am based in London, UK but I have every intention of returning to Dhaka as soon as possible. With regard to your pics ask Tmac it seems he is the resident expert. He has shown me how to upload pics. I think we need more people like you and Tmac to show the world that Bangladesh is not just about poverty and floods! Hello everyone, I'm a Bangladeshi as you can tell by the nickname. I joined this forum inspired by the great pictures of Dhaka. Btw, rmrplayer, I am also settled in London. Last time I've been to BD was 3 years ago for just 2 weeks and I'm dying to go back soon.

yes tanzrian that is the atish dipankar road an important arterial road near the entrance to the newly opened khilgaon flyover. I am familiar as my grandad's house is in kamlapur and I have many childhood memories.

really nice to see dhaka developing. They should build more glass towers similar to bushondhara city though in kawran bazaar. Like line up both sides of the street with those beautiful towers.

rmrplayer great work so far. Can't wait to see the pics from your friend. It will be great if he could get some good shots of the New Apollo hospital, it looks nice from the few I have seen in newspapers and here..

Also, is he going to any other places like Chittagong and Sylhet? Would love to see the highrises of those cities.

Tmac are these photos taken from the Brac Building in Mohakahli? And do u know the building under contruction in the foreground in those other photos? I have seen that building in another photo it is almost finished but I do not know the name. The buildings in the backgorund next to the lake I believe is Rangs waterfornt and futher behind u can see uday tower, navana tower, and silver tower. Can u confirm that ?

welcome aboard! There are many buildings in Kwaran bazar under construction at this present time. Are u referring to world trade centre? If that is the case then I think the location is to the left of Sonargaon Hotel opposite the FDC complex. I do not know the construction status though. With regard to the jamuna complex I am desperately trying to get some info and pics. The jamuna group website is reconstructing but I do know that it is a mega project built on 100 bighas with five star hotel,tv station,internationl department stores/fast food outlets,hospital etc all under one roof. Last time I was in Dhaka last year I saw the construcution site with the basic structure in concrete already in place.

Sorry there are so many buildings I dint know which one u were referring to. Dh tower and Zs Tower are on the right hand side of UTC on panthapth near the saarc fountain roundabout. You will be able to see a pic of dh tower(groud floor) in the thread.

People's Insurane is looking good! I wish in the next decade or two they will get rid of those ugly mid century bank buildings in Motijheel, then the area can really start looking good. Also Janata Bank these days looks like it could really use a fresh coat of paint, or at least a good wash.

can anyone gimme sum info on the LOTUS KAMAL TOWER-2 underconstruction at gulshan circle-1 and the other building being constructed between UDAY TOWER and NAVANA TOWER?

I know Lotus Kamal Tower 2 is a 22 storied building currently under construction. I am not so sure about the other building you are talking about. Here's a picture of Lotus Kamal Tower 1.

I am new to this forum. Actually i took some cityscape photos and posted in flickr, and from there i got to know about this thread. I didn't realize that so many people are spending so much time for this subject.
One thing i found odd is the amount of photos attached in the thread. Wouldn't it be better if they were hyperlinked to their original place?

Don't you think so? Plus I am also interested in knowing what the economic statistics are not only for Bangladesh but for Dhaka in particular. Clearly it has been progressing quite fast.

But I know it's not easy to get such stats about Dhaka or just a single city. That's why I figured we needed a subforum where, if we had enough members, we could keep ourselves up to date with all the info.

you are right...definitely it would be great to have our own subforum. However there are only 2 or 3 people active in subjects realated to Bangladesh here. Bangladeshis are far more interested in talking about politcs than skyscrapers. I hope one day we have enough active participants to get our own subforum.

I am pretty sure there are quite a few active bangladeshi forumers here. Its just they blend in to other forums or dont live in the country. Also some of us cant really get much info on bangladesh so we dont participate in bangladeshi threads. But if we did have a subforum though, i am quite sure most of us would make a greater effort motivated by discussion.

Mirzazeehan, you must save the picture in an album first. Then open the pic and right click to get properties, copy the address. Click on the yellow box, and simply paste that address there. Good luck!

I think it might be an interesting idea if somebody set up a 24 hour live webcam in Dhaka. Around some major thoroughfare.

Let's say above the ETV building in Kawran bazaar. That's close to Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel, basundhara city, or somewhere around there.

I think it will be quite nice. Many other cities of Dhaka's size and of similar levels of development have live webcams (karachi, pakistan for instance).


India is surging ahead quite rapidly, it's high time we at least close the gap or better yet overtake them. This will allow outsiders to have a view of Dhaka that they hardly ever get to have. It's all just negative press in the outside world, if you look at their media.

Hello my Bangladeshi friends, I visited Dhaka last year and went to several parts of Bangladesh including Mohakhali area. How is the area right now, any of you have the updated pictures of Mohakhali area especially near Pacific Centre? I can say that Bangladeshis are very friendly and warm. I also like Bangladeshi foods a lot.

How fast is dhaka growing tmac? Got any clue?

the last time i heard it was around 10 or 12 million. now some sources say it may have crossed the 15 million mark, that's bad news in a way, cause it means more unplanned expansion or more traffic jams, worse living conditions etc.

more planning needs to be done.

One advantage of not having a separate forum is that it leads to many non-Bangladeshis learning about our cities. It brings exposure that you would not get if you had a Bangladesh specific forum. In the latter case, it would almost exclusively be Bangladeshis who viewed the forum and the net readership would go down. Just my two cents...

that picture of the motijheel skyline has been taken from the roof of a 17th storied apartment building in moghbazar,in wich i happen to live in.lol

By any chance is it the building next to the Century Estate complex? I lived in Century Estate for a few years when I was younger, and I remember that the Ispahanis were building an approximately 18 storey building next to it about the time we left in 1990.

mirzazeehan, when I visit Dhaka I usually stay at my aunts place - "Eastern Tower" in Banglamotor area. Three 18 storied buildings. Why don't you take some pics of Motijheel and Gulshan area? New buildings in those areas are so nice and shiny. I would love to see some more of new towers in Motijheel and Rupayan centre, Nitol tower, Red Crescent Concord tower, Silver tower, Uday tower, etc in Gulshan Avenue.

Mirzazeehan, I'm glad I know where you took that pic from - next time I am in Dhaka I will try to get a Motijheel pano from there, if they will let me in that is :) ! Currently I am in Columbia, SC, USA; last time I was in Dhaka was in 2000; since I am doing a medical residency here I have no breaks long enough for trips to Dhaka, not until 2008 anyway (some small chance I may get to go before then but probably not). When I go I will probably stay in my late grandfather's house which is right next to Motijheel - we have a good rooftop view from there so I should be able to get some good pics. By then City Centre and City Bank will hopefully be completed, making the scenery a little nicer! In fact they are thinking of converting the houses on our land there (5 stories) into a building kind of like the one you are living in, so that would make the picture taking better (but I doubt that would be finished before 2010). Anyway, stay tuned for pics (in about 3 or 4 years :D ).

okay TMAC, i will try to get sum more pics of Gulshan and Mohakhali soon.Tanziran,am glad to know more about u,and i think we can be optimistic that u will be quite happy so see dhaka if u visit bangladesh after about 3 to 4 year,cuz the economic growth of the emerging tiger of south asia is showing no signs of slowing down. ;)

Simply AWESOME!!! Now we seriously need a section on Bangladesh.

Btw I am posting the pics in other forums, websites too just to spread the positive development of Bangladesh. I try to give credits to the photographers, but sometimes I am not sure who it is...

You should take some pics of Chittagong, Sylhet and other cities in Bangladesh. I hardly found any pics of highrises from those cities on the web. Even though I always hear that they are also developing fast..
