Plus your cheese sucks. you do realise you're shitting on things american by using american terms? Ecological May 27th, 2011, 05:15 PM you do realise you're shitting on america while using american terms? Suck is part of a widespread Indo-European family of ‘suck’-words which go back to the base *seug-, *seuk-. This no doubt originated in imitation of the sound of sucking from the mother’s breast. Amongst its relatives are Latin sūgere (whose past participle sūctus gave English suction (17th c.)), Welsh sugno, German saugen, Dutch zuigen, Swedish suga, and Danish suge. Suckle (15th c.) was probably a back-formation from suckling (13th c.), itself a derivative of suck. Also from suck comes sucker (14th c.), which originally denoted a ‘baby still at the breast’; its use for a ‘gullible person’ (that is, someone as naive as an unweaned child) originated in American English in the early 19th century. Would they feel the need to do this with any other European country? Germany, for example? How about places like New Zealand? Not saying that the UK is so "fuck yeah, we're the greatest in human history", but at the same time, the idea that we're so insignificant is as often, if no more, over-egged. I think the Texan who started this thread, even though I think it's supposed to be in jest, has kinda helped make that point. chilliz May 27th, 2011, 05:22 PM did you use american search engine google for that? ^^ Did you just communicate to us in English? Sister Anne May 27th, 2011, 05:48 PM It's interesting that although cheese has a reputation for being high in fat, it can actually serve to reduce the body's fat absorption. Well, Wisconsion is most associated with cheese among outsiders and Americans alike, so I understand where our reputation for mass-produced, overly-processed cheese come from. But there are many great cheese producers in the upstate New York and New England area; and California produces a large and increasing number of fantastic artisanal cheeses. Unfortunately, there seems to be a prejudice against anything American when it comes to fine dining (and well, just about anything cultural for that matter). That is why it took decades for Europeans to finally start serving our wine. I'd be interested to hear more: are there, for example, any regions of the US particularly associated with specific types of cheese? It's not something that we in Europe ever hear much about. I don't think you hear much about it because Europeans are arrogant about their food, amongst many other things (ie-everything). You brought up beer before and it's practically the same thing. Wisconsin for instance produces over 600 different varieties of cheese and is the only state that has a master cheesemakers program. The cheeses most associated with Wisconsin are Colby, Brick, and high quality Cheddar. To lump all American cheeses in with mass produced stuff is rather insulting. chilliz May 28th, 2011, 12:33 AM The troll thread just got trolled.:dunno: El Mariachi May 28th, 2011, 01:07 AM Hard Rock (which Zeppelin pioneered) was British :) as was Heavy Metal (Sabbath), Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd), Beat Music (Beatles), Glam Rock (Bowie) and many other genres of band based music. Band based music, is something that dates back long before the U.S was founded. Beat Music? Glam Rock? You are talking about sub-genres. And ones that were ultimately born from American influences. The Beatles for instance were influenced by American artists like Buddy Holly and later Bob Dylan. The same can be said about Bowie and Jimmy Page/Robert Plant. The most important innovators of that time were acts like Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and American bluesmen. Other American genres like Country Music are just re inventions of early English and other European countries Folk Music brought to the states to become the Appalachian music scene. There is some truth in that as many people from the British Isles moved to that part of the country, although it is hardly the same music. The difference is the fusion of European and African cultures. The banjo also being one of the big differences. Britain has a great history of Classical music, which the US doesn't. That's not exactly true. We can see the talent of these styles in Hollywood films. Call me crazy but John Williams will be looked upon as favorably as these great classical composers. Nightjar May 28th, 2011, 01:32 AM That's not exactly true. We can see the talent of these styles in Hollywood films. Call me crazy but John Williams will be looked upon as favorably as these great classical composers. Sorry, but using John Williams as an example of great American classical music is simply absurd. Williams' canon is taught in music schools specifically as an example of work that borrows extremely liberally from every significant European composer (and most significantly Wagner). In other words he is remarkable (and indeed so successful) by dint of being as unoriginal as he is. If you want to use examples of great cinematic score composers then you'd do a great deal better citing people like Bernard Hermann and Jerry Goldsmith. Also, if you want to bring people's attention to proper American composers then I'd suggest Charles Ives or Aaron Copland. LondonFox May 28th, 2011, 01:37 AM Beat Music? Glam Rock? Rock Music as a whole was developed on both sides of the Atlantic, US and UK... only Rock and Roll which is a spin off genre itself was born in the US exclusively.. and even then, its influences were taken from blues and folk, folk being a European export in the first place. Beat Music, Metal, Hard Rock, Glam Rock, Progressive Rock etc etc... they were brand new entities when created in the UK, no one had heard music like that before, the influences for them came from personal and living experience over here, with far more influence from original English and Celtic folk music, like Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. The Beatles for instance were influenced by American artists like Buddy Holly and later Bob Dylan. The same can be said about Bowie and Jimmy Page/Robert Plant. The Beatles were influenced by Presley and Holly at the very start, but they went on to far bigger and better things inventing new genres all the time. I don't think you could call any of their mid to later work influenced by anything coming out of the States. Sub-genres of rock and roll, which got it's start in the U.S and expanded around the world. What makes it an American music style is that it originated from a fusion of American/European and African cultures. Which of course goes back to the whole 'melting pot' that this country is based around opposed to multi-culturalism. I am not saying that the genre was completely developed by the U.S. but the genre wouldn't exist without this American melting pot in the Deep South. Or without slavery, where the orgins of blues, jazz, swing, ragtime, etc. came from. The Beatles were influenced by Presley and Holly at the very start, but they went on to far bigger and better things inventing new genres all the time. I don't think you could call any of their mid to later work influenced by anything coming out of the States. And Bowie.... influenced by Holly?? Yes, but these artists were influencing each other at that time. Like I said, guys like Lennon were influnced by Bob Dylan and the Beatles were influencing other acts. Guys like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton were influencing future rockers. As for Bowie, I was referring to Little Richard who is probally one of the most influential artists in music history. John Williams is just a film score composer. A good one, (whose major works were mostly recorded with British orchestras) but will never be ranked alongside people like Holst or Elgar. By who? I hate to break it to you but the music snobs don't dictate popularity. Most people probally don't even know who those two are. John Williams has created some of the most iconic music of the past century. The Star Wars theme alone is one of the most recognizable pieces of music in music history. LondonFox May 28th, 2011, 02:50 AM Sub-genres of rock and roll Not really.... maybe Hard Rock had a few carried over tendencies, but the majority was completely new in format. Most people probally don't even know who those two are. Most people would know who they were. The Planet Suite is one of the most famous classical pieces of all time. If people keep dumbing down their perceptions of classical music..it probably will be. Truth be told, Beethoven probably could have written it with both hands behind his back. But he didn't.
