View Full Version : NORWAY | The Showcase - Best of Completed Projects
Galro May 29th, 2011, 07:18 PM This tread is meant to showcase the best of the completed projects in Norway. I've made three rules in order to get the tread as clean as possible.
- Lets keep the talking/discussion at a bare minimum. If you have question about the tread or want to discuss whether or not the project fits in here, then this should be taken here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=991455&page=4).
- Each post should not contain more than three pictures in order to not overload the page completely. If you feel the quality of the projects warrants more pictures than three, then these should be put in a separate post beneath it (see post #2 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=78655234&postcount=2) and #3 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=78718114&postcount=3) as an example of this). All pictures should be of best possible quality. Remember to include credits if the pictures are not yours. (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1388508)
- Only post projects after they're done and no projects older than 5 years.

What is the purpose of this building?
It's spectacular. The contrast between the crystals and the light makes it look sensational
Galro June 4th, 2011, 01:01 AM It's just a office building, although a quite nice one. Some nimbys in the city have called it the ugliest building in town! I, like you, disagree with them.
NB: I know I said there should be no discussion/compliments in the tread, but I think it would be kind of weird to not share opinions and answer those opinions in tread when I think of it. I therefore suggest to change the rule unless someone object to it, but lets keep discussion and talking a bare minimum.
:)

Project Area: 1,260 sqm
The mountain lodge, the winning design competition entry in 2004, accomodates 24 guest rooms, a café, a restaurant and a conference room. The lodge is situated at the path leading up
to The Pulpit Rock, the sheer cliff overhanging Lyse Fjord. The lodge’s placement and massing is well fitted into the immediate environment. The main bearing construction consists of a rib-
work of doubled up, massive wood elements. These elements are cut through to create the spacious public zones and form the rhythm of both the indiviual guest rooms and the intimate
zones occuring along the fasade.

Architects: Helen & Hard
Location: Stavanger, Norway
Project Year: 2010
The small site is located in a neighbourhood with preserved, 18th century timber villas. To meet the client’s wish to increase the density of his property Helen & Hard proposed three
houses, which would interpret the traditional villa typology. Placed close to each other, the volumes are stepped to ensure maximum access to the marvellous seaside views for each
house. During the design process, the relationship of the new dwellings to the preserved trees and the sloping topography played a significant role.
In all the three houses, the entry, sleeping areas and bathrooms, along with a two-floor high living room are located on the ground floor, while on the second floor there is a large living-
room with extensive glass facades and a terrace overlooking adjacent houses toward the view. Each house has an essentially closed façade to its northern back face, designed as a
sort of “shield”. This shield, which is covered with rough, dark timber boards, includes the roof, the back facade and the exterior storage space. It also provides a shelter, and protects
against views into the private outdoor spaces. On the inside of the shield, towards the southern view, the facade is covered with smooth white painted timber boards.

Architects: Lund+Slaatto Architects
Location: Lier, Norway
Project area: 950 sqm
Project year: 2009
Our goal in this project was to create a roadside restaurant that defies this ignored typology, and to create a building that would unite a sense of speed and motion with a surprising
sensation of tranquillity and proximity to nature. This motorway diner is located on the E18 outside of Oslo, and the distinctive shape is designed to echo the topography of the
surrounding landscape. The design is based on the principle of a pavilion opening the dining area towards the view of the nearby trees. The shape is generated from a folded plane
which forms the roof and the two side walls.
The detailing and choice of materials are all focused on furthering this architectural language. The outer surface of the folded plane is patinated copper cladding. The inner surface is
formed in composite panels with a timber veneer, where the size and position of the inner cladding is perfectly aligned with the banding in the copper sheets. This distinctive building
has become a landmark along this important road out of the city of Oslo.

Architects: Reiulf Ramstad Architects
Location: Fagerborg, Oslo, Norway
Project area: 1,200 sqm
Project year: 2010
RRA has designed a new kindergarten for Fagerborg Congregation in central Oslo. The kindergarten offers 2 units for children between 1-3 years old and 2 units
for children between 3-6 years old.
There are many cultural heritage guidelines to be considered in the project site. The area is characterised by residential buildings from 1900-1950. As a
requirement from the local authority, the kindergarten is to have a contemporary expression. With its location in the middle of a small city park, the kindergarten
has an outdoor area that is protected like an enclosed garden. The planning solution enables the 4 kindergarten units to function both independently and together
as required. All units share a common area and a kitchen in the heart of the building. Administration is placed on the upper floor separate from children areas.

Architect: Reiulf Ramstad Architects
Location: Trollstigen, Rauma, Møre og Romsdal
Project Year: 2010
The project will enhance the experience of the Trollstigen plateau’s location and nature. Thoughtfulness regarding features and materials will underscore the site’s temper and
character, and well-adapted, functional facilities will augment the visitor’s experience. The architecture is to be characterised by clear and precise transitions between planned
zones and the natural landscape. Through the notion of water as a dynamic element –from snow, to running and then falling water- and rock as a static element, the project
creates a series of prepositional relations that describe and magnify the unique spatiality of the site.

enmejR September 15th, 2011, 09:42 PM 3 Houses in Paradis

Let's wait to do it to we set up this Architecture section after newyear. That will open up some new possibilities, maybe opening threads for each building allowing an unlimited number of photos, and a "historic post" with the renderings and maybe all the construction photos etc. :)
City of Rain December 27th, 2011, 02:38 PM I honestly don't think some tiny remote cabin can qualify as among the best completed projects in the country.
Þróndeimr December 27th, 2011, 04:42 PM I honestly don't think some tiny remote cabin can qualify as among the best completed projects in the country.
In yous opinion yes, but remember to respect the view and opinions of others. This is the kind of projects that get attention beyond the borders and is been posted on various of blogs and architectural sites. Maybe you, maybe I don't think its that nice or well design, but others might think this is the best.
City of Rain December 27th, 2011, 05:35 PM It's just a tiny cabin :dunno: It looks almost as if it could be someones shed. I would expect this thread to contain only our most spectacular projects.
Þróndeimr December 27th, 2011, 06:24 PM ^^ then there isn't much to post! ;)
Galro December 27th, 2011, 09:18 PM It's just a tiny cabin :dunno: It looks almost as if it could be someones shed. I would expect this thread to contain only our most spectacular projects.
The goal with the tread was to show projects that are more than just mere commies or Thon architecture - projects where people had put some work into making it look good. I think that "cabin" qualifies there.
City of Rain December 27th, 2011, 10:28 PM I think it looks anonymous and unspectacular.
mjoks007 December 27th, 2011, 10:40 PM As far as I can see, the thread doesn't say anything about project most be spectacular. It says "best".
City of Rain December 27th, 2011, 10:51 PM And that thing is among the bestin the country? I'm getting a new garage in some months. Maybe I'll upload a pic after it's finished.
Seriously, though, it's not like that cabin thingy being in this thread or not actually matters to me, I just thought I'd share my opinion.
IceCheese December 27th, 2011, 11:07 PM I'm getting a new garage in some months. Maybe I'll upload a pic after it's finished.
Who's the architect?:) If it's not Igland garasjen or some other assembly line garage, it could be interesting. What was the point with this project though, wasn't the size or the spectacularity. It was simplicity and adaption to surroundings. These kind of projects shows that you can something elegant, sleek and modern, without "yelling out" the message with a big tourist/visitor center or shops/hotels signs blablabla. It's a rest stop, and it's pretty simple, but you could've done the same with a standard Statens Vegvesen shed. IMO, that would send out a completely different message, kind of "humanity waz heere"-type of tag on nature. Why not make something extraordinary, in-touch-with-nature stuff when we can? Just because it's a "shed"?
But I realize you don't see any architectural value in it eitherway. But I hope you understand SOME part of why we think it is or value in this thread.
Þróndeimr December 27th, 2011, 11:13 PM ^^ Lol, let's not take that discussion any further! :D
Nice to hear your opinion on the design of that "cabin" City of Rain, i don't find it that great either as i never seem to get used to that much concrete been used as walls, especially not high up in the mountains!
However, most don't want to hear your opinion on whether a project is good enough for the thread or not good enough, especially when you didn't create the thread and didn't set the rules of the thread. Lets stick to that. ;)
IceCheese December 27th, 2011, 11:54 PM ^^I'm just getting warm:D
City of Rain December 28th, 2011, 12:52 AM I never said it's horrible, just that it's not among the best projects in the country (or anything close to that - thank god, that would have been sad as fuck). It's simply an alright, average-looking cabin-thingy. I find it hilarious how everyone suddenly think it deserves to be here - as if you guys seriously think it's among the best projects in the country  just fucking hilarious.
Anyways, I'm out. I'll put up a pic of my garage when it's done. It's not designed by anyone famous, but it will look completely neutral and boring, so I can only assume it will be a great hit in this thread.
City of Rain December 28th, 2011, 12:57 AM Actually, I'm not out. First I must add this fine piece of architecture to this thread. I strongly recommend anyone who is interested in architecture visit this place - it sure puts the opera in Oslo to shame. Not only is both the exterior and interior extremely sleek and modern - the surrounding areas have some of the most beautiful and flawless architecture in the city, which even makes looking out the windows of the building an experience in itself. I definitely recommend this place to all lovers of architecture visiting Bergen.

Its a rest place.. It obviously wouldn't been in this thread if it was located in the middle of a city. Thing is, the national route projects has received much attention from abroad. So I think its quite logic adding all this new national routes projetcs (restplaces, viewpoints) no matter how good or bad they are, as they are all small parts of one big project that surely is one of our best and most important projects.

I still don't see how that shed in itself is of particular significance. Is it even open to the public? And unguarded? It's only a matter of time before someone enters it and takes a shit on the floor. Had it been in Bergen, it would have been tagged down beyond recognition already. Anyways, that's slightly off-topic and I'm not sure why I mentioned that.
If you guys want to keep it in the thread that's perfectly fine by me, and I believe I have said this before. I personally don't see how it fits into a thread meaning to showcase Norway's best projects, but if everyone else does, then that's great. I don't have the power to remove anything on this board, anyway :) Ha en videre fin jul!

How many of them are there? Perhaps we could gather the best ones in one post in this thread? Again, it doesn't really bother me a lot, but the way it is now people are going to check out the "best" projects in Norway and find a shed, lol.
Þróndeimr December 28th, 2011, 03:28 PM ^^ the thing is, today, its project like that shed that gets prizes for "best design" etc. And we already have a thread for the Nasjonalveier project...
