A start at last, on the tower that will change the North Sydney skyline the most it has been changed, since the 1992 completion of Optus Plaza!
To be North Sydney's third tallest tower at 115m and 36 stories! Beau Monde!

Did an early arvo walk today around North Sydney's CBD and checked on the Beau Monde Tower site.
The old Shoppingworld complex which is still scaffolded with some internal modifications (machinery could be heard behind the scaffolding). To jog some of your memories, the previous Shoppingworld is set to become the 8 lower commercial floors of Beau Monde Tower.
There was also 1 x a Delta Group Hitachi excavator (a track hoe) digging foundations in front of the previous Shoppingworld site.
Cheers

With your new pics Fabian' i'm starting to wonder what the sales office actually meant when they told me that Shoppingworld was going to be incorporated into the new structure.
As you have seen, Shoppingworld is rather long and it looks like they are only taking away the very front section.
They have added a concrete pump to the site.
I can't believe this tower is finally underway after waiting so long last year for it to begin.
Guess the next stage is to wait for a crane to arrive after any necessary demolition is completed. Still no sign of which construction company but i have a feeling it will be Multiplex.

I think it's going to be next year when the tower starts to rise because they will have to excvate below street level for foundations. Fingers crossed that they don't have to do that.

By next year do you mean 2004 ? Surely it wouldn't take a whole year to do foundations. Will it be visible from the Pacific Highway heading north when it is completed ?
Fabian

It will definately be visible from the Pacific Highway. Also i'm saying that it will take that long because of the time spent on doing foundations. They seem to take forever.

Made a detour to North Sydney today to check out a few sites @ around 11.30AM.
The previous Shoppingworld complex has had the floors gutted with floor plates still in tact. Actually the newer concrete floorplates do look new. Gee, they're progression is fast on this one.
On street level just in front of the above on 77 Berry St there was one track hoe still digging and a concrete pump (those praying manitis looking aparatus) drilling as well.
All good progression :okay: .

From Mosman, Beau Monde will be between Northpoint and Unysis towers. So when your looking at it, it will appear towards the Northern end. Fills the void pretty well too.

February 8th, 2003, 01:14 PM
finally .. i have been looking forward to north sydney getting "unpaused"
There aren't enough residential towers there .. the "let's move back to the city!" boom really started only after NS had been frozen. And now, it's seriously behind. I'm glad to see them starting to make back up the distance. Hopefully, with some more towers there, you'll start to see more residential services like 24Hr shops, etc. Although from memory they have a better supermarket over there than we have in the CBD .. damn Coles Express! Even Adelaide has a full-size Coles in the CBD for christ's sake .. and open longer .. grr ..
anyway, I suppose this means the NS train station upgrade schedule has been finalised, I was under the impression the upgrade was a prerequisite to any new development. Look forward to seeing the new station greatly.

Fabian
February 8th, 2003, 10:44 PM
This development is actually going to be one the last residential developments to be built in North Sydney CBD due to restrictions on residential development. The development itself has nothing to do with the station.
It is commercial development that has been affected by North Sydney Station. The station needs to be upgraded in order to boost it's capacity and be able to an increase of workers in North Sydney. Therefore, commercial developers must be required to pay a levy to fund it's upgrade.
Muse
February 9th, 2003, 12:42 AM
Ewww, the pic finn took makes the old Shoppingworld structure look asbestos-ridden.
I believe the NS Station upgrade has, remote as it may sound, to do also with the Chatswood-Epping-(hopefully) Parramatta line. Handling the extra traffic etc.

I was in North Sydney yesterday and made a point of visiting the Beau Monde Tower site.
On doing so, the 7 gutted levels of Shoppingworld had workers perched on these gutted levels. Good to see that the workers are working on Saturdays.
In front of the gutted levels, there was a relatively deep hole - appox. 10 metres deep.
Also on site were 4 track hoes, one truck and a crane-type apparatus.

Had a quick chance to pop over to North Sydney today and went to 77 Berry Street to visit the Beaumonde site and had a peek over the scaffolded site http://dj.comtv.ru/smales/peepwall.gif !
Scaffolding is now not apparent on the front of the 8 levels of the Shoppingworld levels fronting Berry Street. The are still excavators on site still digging foundations but no crane on the site as yet.
BTW Just off Little Spring Street, 1 level of Shoppingworld is still open and full of specialty stores i.e. pharmacy, newsagent, hairdressers etc. I was told that this will not be demolished :okay: .

This one kicks some super butt over La Maison. I used to work in the Canon Centre around 4 years ago and we always used to go to Berry Street Tavern which of course no longer exists. There's a building to the side of it with all masty things going up it. Is this some kind of conveyancing they do to make sure the new building goes up perfectly straight?

I find it strange that they would want to put it on the side of a building, particularly if it is an apartment tower.

Goodo finn! Was getting extremely tired of the old renders that I just decided to wait for the tower to actually finish. Now some new ones to print out.
The first one is Beaumonde's debut in really putting it into context of the street. It's going to look alright!
LOL @ Konica conveniently behind the trees.
Seems it's also creating a lot of verve @ street level; it might need crowd control! Like a magnet drawing everyone and everything to it (of course!).
Hrmmm, peach pant suits must be in this season.
(I like the Calder-esque mobile hanging in the foyer - very 60s.)

Last one being between levels 17 & 18. In fact I love how this one changes shapes on all sides and all of its height. Great design!!
Level 8 will be known as 'The Club House' with indoor pools and gym equipment for commercial office folk and residents alike. As long as they become Club House members I guess ;) ;) ;)
Anyway, can't wait to see the visible glass for the cladding. I'm hoping it will change from a blue to green to aqua depending on the time of day and/or weather - similar to the Zenith Twins in Chatswood.

BTW I wonder hpw many neon lights are going to be switched off in the vicinity when residents occupy particularly the middle foors. They will complain to council and "bang" goes the lights.
It's happened b4 and it will happen again.

Oh, you mean that clumpy lot of steel clod in the last pic? I just thought it was the first of the 2 floors of the plant rooms.
If that has topped out, it is looking better than the renders. If it has topped out, wouldn't the casing take it a little higher? If it has topped out, the next we can look forward to is 100 Pacific Hwy.

Firstly, this morning I made a quick venture over to North Syndey on a Tangara (had clean windows too lol) and noticed the top plant room metalic frames are up.
On getting out @ North Sydney Station I ventured up to 77 Berry to check it out.
The previously known Shopping World is now known as Berry Square. It seems there are now mock sandstone tiles flanking its base on both the eastern and western sides on its nothern aspect.
BTW There are still 2 cranes flanking the nothern side of the tower. Only the higher one is still visble form across the other side of The Harbour (and on the train b4 mentioned as above on crossing The Harbour Bridge).
It's all good :okay:

This building to me just looks unfinished. They should have designed a spire for the top, or maybe had the higher levels come up to a "stepped" point. It looks like the top has been chopped off.

Exactly right! This tower looks too short and too insignificant on the North Sydney skyline (looks like a 20 storey building or something...). The top is very 'problematic' indeed!
