Laatst ben ik met mijn zusje twee weekjes rondgetrokken door Senegal.
Zij zat al twee maanden in Dakar, en kende dus al redelijk wat mensen en wist het eea van het land, waardoor ik ondanks de korte tijd toch het gevoel heb veel geleerd (en meegemaakt) te hebben. :)
Grootste attractie zijn wmb de mensen. Uitzonderlijk vriendelijk, open, spontaan en vrolijk. En eerlijk ook.
Altijd uitgebreid groeten, altijd open voor een praatje. Je kon keihard onderhandelen dat je toch echt 65 eurocent (omgerekend) wilde betalen voor die taxirit ipv 70, maar ongeacht de uitkomst waren ze daarna altijd nog vrolijk en vriendelijk. Als op een chaotisch busstation mannetjes op je af komen om te helpen, doen ze dat vrijwel altijd ook om je (effectief) te helpen, zonder verwachte tegenprestatie.
Verder is Senegal en met name Dakar voor Afrikaanse begrippen aardig ontwikkeld. In de delen die ik heb gezien woonde iedereen gewoon in (vaak zelfgebouwde) stenen huisjes, en Dakar heeft een beter snelwegennet dan Amsterdam.
Uiteindelijk blijft het op wereldschaal een erg arm land, maar doordat iedereen bezig lijkt te zijn met z'n handeltjes, de meeste mensen vrolijk zijn, het land erg veilig is en iedereen redelijk (hoewel misschien krap) onderdak lijkt te hebben kreeg ik absoluut niet de indruk van schrijnende armoede die ik bijvoorbeeld in de sloppenwijken van Z-Afrika of in N-Korea wel kreeg.
Maar goed, als men een keer een ingewikkelde medische behandeling nodig heeft kan de situatie ineens een stuk schrijnender worden. En intussen lijkt voor veel mensen Europa toch te lonken, waar je tenslotte zelfs als illegaal vaak meer dan 100 euro per maand verdient.
