well? yes and no...
Harlem is a neighborhood in the Northern most part of Manhattan. It's rich in Black History and culture, and always will be. and then you have Spanish Harlem...also very rich in culture and history... In short, Harlem is a wonderful hood brimming with all walks of life...
black, yellow, brown, whatever....
"other humans"... ;)

This is an absolutely amazing photo. Thanks, Swivle!

Quote: Is Harlem the suburb in which the black population lived previously?

Harlem is not a suburb but rather a neighborhood in Manhattan, NYC. Harlem, during the 19th century was extremely posh all white (as most of NY was at the time) hood where life was good. Post civil war lead to mass migration of former slaves to nothern cities and here in NYC they took over Harlem and during the 1920s with the Harlem rennasaince it was a very happeining place. Jazz bars like the Cotton Club and Lenox Lounge were doing well and African American culture was riding high. After the depression and WWII the area became poor and blighted and hit rock botom in the 70's as did much of NY. Of course rock botom isnt as bad as some other citites but thats besides the point. Now, Harlem is diversifying, whites (Billy Clinton) are moving back in and the hood is becoming more gentrafied and upscale as is much of Manhattan. It is really an intresting place with great history.

a neighbourhood IS a suburb... I suppose in North America you don't have your cities split up into 'suburbs' quite as much as we do. I think in Toronto they call them 'boroughs' and neighbourhoods... either way, you answered my question. thanks

"a neighbourhood IS a suburb..."

erhm...well suburbs as I know them are cities surrounding a metro area...like plano is a suburb of Dallas....when in fact Harlem IS in the Burough of Manhattan, making it a neighborhood.

A suburb in the US is a city or town that surrounds a larger more important city. Sub (under) urban (city) thus making it almost an "outyling" area if you will. Middle age fortified towns or city states like the Republic of Vennice in the latter middle ages and early modern age held land well beyound its walls much like NYC's influence might well extend beyound its borders. Example, in most of Long Island say for example South Hampton, you get NYC news. This is just one way of looking at it though.

No, a suburb is "sub-urban". It's not the city, it's not the country, it's something in between.

New York has boroughs as well (5 of them), but the suburbs are outside the city proper, and generally filled with single family homes rather than apartment buildings...
