View Full Version : Nairobi Metropolitan Region Spatial Draft Plan
mzungu June 9th, 2011, 05:36 PM From the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development. It's a huge document (33MB), but with content likely to make the debaters in this forum go wild for the next year or so!
Chapter 9 is probably the most interesting IMO. If even half of these plans are realised, Nairobi will be unrecognizable!

Besides the Multimodal Regional Bypass Grid and the Orbital Corridor, that are my obvious favorites, the M12 is one that I'm praying for! A road between Langata Road and Ngong Road connecting KWS and Junction is needed yesterday!
Enjoy! :)

thanx.good plans by the ministry.Isn't the Nairobi Southern Bypass linking Langata road and ngong road.It traverses through kibera and emerges somewhere near Lenana in the forest on ngong road.

It intersects with Langata road just after Wilson, and with Ngong Road just before Karen. When the M12 is done, you can get straight to Junction without having to drive on Ngong Road, and that's what I'm looking for!
From what I understand, that one is also part of the new Western Bypass (as outlined in the Spatial Draft Plan). That means all the way from KWS to Village Market. Hope they dual it all the way, with no roundabouts!
Kenguy June 13th, 2011, 06:09 PM Im having some difficulty downloading the document. Hope to see these plans ASAP.
Jim856796 June 25th, 2011, 05:00 PM I downloaded the document, and since it has 671 pages, it's gonna take more than a few weeks to straighten out the plan. If the plan is straightened out, then the plans look like Nairobi is being turned into a city geared towards the future.
Rongai June 29th, 2011, 03:56 AM It is true we will not be able to recognize Nairobi .I liked chapter 13 .The new cities/towns are so cool.

Finally managed to download the document. I'm speechless. Now if only all those things see the light of day.
Did anyone notice how they stated that Uhuru highway should not be touched? (no elevated overpasses). I found it strange. If there's one road in the whole of Kenya that's bound to get expanded sooner or later, its Uhuru highway.
Why do we need all the smaller new towns having airports? I support the idea of having a new international airport to supplement JKIA in the long term, especially one at the fringes of the metropolis. Also the idea of moving the military base away from Eastleigh is a superb idea. Once that happens, there will be no restrictions for building heights in Eastleigh.
Rongai June 30th, 2011, 08:44 AM Having an overpass on Uhuru highway could have been good, but i have to be honest i was worried about how it would have looked .I agree with them ,about it being an emotional drive.I like the way it looks ,with the towers while coming from Westlands and Cooperative house coming from Nyayo Stadium. With an overpass all this would have been blocked.Imagine the guests at laico regency looking out their windows and seeing huge trailer trucks (noise and pollution and all ),and no green park to look at.Though they want to get rid of Central park and put more buildings.
I.M Boring June 30th, 2011, 11:58 AM ^^ I agree about the aesthetics, even though I'm not so sure how high thehighway would be.

They want to what? They cant get rid of Central Park, why? I mean Nairobi is green (as my west african visiting friends told me) but it still needs that park...isnt it great driving along Uhuru Highway and at least having the greens of the park on one side? I hope they leave the greens.
Rongai June 30th, 2011, 03:19 PM I hope they keep the park too.Nairobi will be even more greener according to these plans.
Jim856796 July 1st, 2011, 06:36 PM Chapter 1 of the Spatial Draft Plan describes the study area and an outline of what the further chapters deal with. The study area extends over 32,000 square kilometres and comprises the jurisdiction of Nairobi City Council and 14 other local authorities. The study area includes jurisdiction of four counties comprising of Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado and contained a population of 6,650,000 in 2009.
Jim856796 July 16th, 2011, 11:28 PM Chapter 2 of the Spatial Draft Plan deals with the National Urbanisation Policy.
The population of Kenya has grown to 10 million in 1969 to almost 40 million in 2010. Population grows at an annual rate of 3%. The urban share has grown from 10% in 1969 to 35% in 2010.
In Kenya, there is only one city with a population of over 1 million (Nairobi) and only one other city with a population of 500,000 or more (Mombasa).
28 urban centres with a population of over 100,000
135 urban centres with a population of over 10,000
215 urban centres with a population of over 2,000
By 2030, the population of Kenys is slated to rise to 60-70,000,000
