Originally, the Dhaka Cityscapes thread was one in a series of threads meant to focus on the skyline and architectural development of the capital. Over time, the nature of the thread has changed to focus more on human issues. There's no problem with that, but I think there are a few people who - like me - want for there to be a photo thread more focused on the built environment. So, my hope is for this thread to focus solely on skyline / architecture shots - which of course is what this website was meant for in the first place. Two points - first: please remember to credit photographers and not to post photos with "copyright" written on them; and two: please limit the number of photos per post (perhaps, no more than four shots per thread). Thanks, and enjoy!

First two photos are of the Banani skyline, and are by stefof:

Credit to the photographers, as always.

And I feel like Banani Graveyard needs more trees, it would help the environment in Gulshan/Banani a bit.

More trees are good...but they do take up space, which is at a premium....and maybe the reason why there aren't more.

There is and it does. As long as there are shanties in and around it, the situation will not improve.

^^I wonder which lake is swimmable in Dhaka city? Is Dhanmondi lake cleaner than the ones we have in Uttara or Gulshani? "Swimmable" means that it will not harm the skin or cause other health hazards to the swimmer. Street urchins and shanty dwellers probably can do it, but I'm thinking more of middle class people.

tanzirian

I'm guessing Gulshan Lake is "cleaner" than Banani Lake, since the former does not have a massive slum abutting it like the latter does. Of course none of these city lakes are going to really be "clean."

I believe parts of the Dhanmondi lake is quite clean, unlike the ones in other areas. Perhaps you can check them out during your impending visit?

^^ I head that Dhanmondi Lake has some kind of a drainage system, but Gulshan/Banani/Uttara lakes are actually stagnant water. So it may be that Dhanmondi Lake is a bit cleaner than the other lakes.

Thanks but no thanks. Green, stagnant slimy water just isn't as enticing and neither is the over chlorinated local city pool. The closest I have come to swimming in polluted water was taking a dip in the Mississippi as a college freshman. Just had to watch out for the oily slime from the barges :ohno:

Not really...my place is right next to the lake, and I use the lakeside walkway everyday..there's no foul smell whatsoever.I guess it varies depending on which area of the lake ur talking about..some areas don't have the smell and are relatively cleaner than others.

are you serious, the gulshan lake has a foul smell, try the tejgoan link road driving from aarong to gulshan 1, with the windows open or on a rickshaw

however the dhanmondi lake seems to be better smell wise way better

Well Mirza, it is of little comfort to those who dwell near the parts that stink. And it must be my poor luck that I always seem to pass by the smelly parts. :)

Those of you who own property near the Gulshan (and Banani) Lake ought to organize and do something about them about it since the municipality doesn't appear to be bothered. That how we do it here.

I agree...and especially in a place where there is lack of effective taxation regimen concurrently with inept / corrupt governance...the best hope for such a cleanup in the concerted effort of private individuals of means...who do have a stake other than altruism since it is their own backyard after all.

Not that any such venture is ever easy...even here in a developed country. My parents have a small but nice pond behind their house, which is retained by a little dam. A few years ago the dam broke and the pond became a mud pit. The city / county refused to fix the dam saying that it was private property. So it fell to few of the homeowners to get all the other homeowners on board with a plan to fix the dam and then to contribute towards that cost. This process was something akin to herding cats but eventually after a year or two the dam did get fixed and the pond refilled.

Wouldn't be surprised. Dhanmondi lake is much smaller - and also completely surrounded by well to do homes, right - no slums, right?

Banani and Gulshan lakes have shrunk / been filled in a lot though. Compare to Dhaka maps of a few decades ago and these two lakes were much larger...the connection to Hatirjheel etc was much more apparent back then.

A tk 400 crore project has already been taken by Rajuk to for protection and beautification of the lake. This project is due to start in a month or two.Heres the details..

This photo was labeled as Dhaka, and it does look the part...though I can't quite pinpoint where it was taken for. Regarding the skyline in the background, my guess is Gulshan-2 on the left and Gulshan-1 and Mohakhali on the right. What do you guys think? I don't know who the photographer was since no one was credited.

The apartments don't look swanky or colorful enough to be Gulshan. Plus, where are the tall buildings like SPL Western and Westin-1?

I feel a distinct 'Bhuter Goli' aura in here -- and the HDR photo is creepy enough to match the namesake :)

Or it could be behind Green Road / Eastern Plaza somewhere (closer to Farmgate area).

OTOH -- the ten story apartments on the upper left look a lot like the Navy staff quarters on airport road.

The photo is not taken in Gulshan - I never said that. I may be wrong, but I think the skyline we see on the horizon is Gulshan and Mohakhali. Look in the background, on the left. You see two tall buildings. I think they may be Doreen and Westin. Then there is a gap and some more tall buildings on the right, which I think are Gulshan-1 and Mohakhali. The pic is too small to tell but I couldn't think of another group of highrises fitting that pattern. If you think different, you can say which buildings they are.

Actually, it's not not an optical illusion. Unfortunately, Bangladesh Bank has been painted a very ugly light shade of olive green, instead of the shiny silver that it used to be. I noticed this unfortunate change up close when I went back to BD this December.

Uttara is developing fast and coming along fine, except that the commercial parts appear rather haphazard and unplanned.

^^ The thing about many of our more affluent neighborhoods is that they were largely conceived as residential areas but now are serving significant commercial purposes as well. Really Motijheel is the only dedicated planned commercial zone. The commercial area of Purbachal might be the next.

There are plenty of highly developed cities that have jungles of overhead cables. I would be surprised if Dhaka were able to get rid of them. Maybe in a few select affluent areas...or perhaps in future expansions like Purbachal if pre-planned as such...but otherwise I doubt overhead cables are going anywhere soon.

I think it is rather crass to build such mid rise/highrise structures on a riverfront. Rather sad that Dhaka Municipal Corporation or RAJUK is clueless about such issues.

True, but I also meant to say construction material. They do not appear to use any prestressed concrete or other modular building blocks, etc. Furthermore, wouldn't it be better to use drywall material for interior framing, in that such material would cause less damage in the event of an earthquake? Total construction time would also be shorter, wouldn't it?

A. For Pre-stressed (post-tensioned) concrete you need expensive post-tensioning cable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestressed_concrete#Unbonded_post-tensioned_concrete) and very high quality cement.

B. For drywall sections you would need

1. Hot-dipped zinc-galvanized steel studs (http://www.wikihow.com/Build-with-Steel-Studs) (because wood studs in Bangladesh will be very expensive and subject to rot), and,

2. Gypsum board

Now -- the first two items (PT cable and Steel studs) need to be imported (no local manufacturer) -- so they will be expensive and will take a while to see widespread use -- even if sourced from China.

The third item (Gypsum board) is available from at least one local manufacturer (link below). Looks like this is also new (read rare) and the manufacturer involved (which uses GYPROC license and technology in NarayanGanj) will charge a hefty premium -- as is the rule in Bangladesh.

http://www.melgypsum.com/products.html

The good news however is that in India there are multinational manufacturers with larger capacity plants (Lafarge Boral Gypsum and Saint Gobain) -- which when imported will bring down pricing and enable wider adoption of gypsum wallboard and drywall technology. Gypsum boards however are very heavy and not particularly well-suited for long distance transport. Here's an old writeup in Express India which says adoption is still not widespread in India but growing quite fast.

Quite interesting and heartening, that some enterprising business(man) has taken a chance on product (group) that is far from being common or popular. This manufacturer probably has to provide a lot of education and motivation to the people in (building) construction industry so that such product comes into mainstream use.

Agreed, I just wonder, when will they start using cranes?

They will do with manual labor and if needed -- manual hoists, until going above twelve stories in height. For above twelve stories -- the use of construction hoists (i.e. external mount industrial lifts) becomes more practical. Like everything else -- some businesses will import them form China and rent it out to construction sites.

On a lighter note -- see how to jury rig a vespa to hoist brick and mixed cement (mosholla). This is how to mechanize things Subcontinental style :tongue4:

BTW Manbil bhai, are you an engineer? Or is your knowledge of construction material acquired out of non-occupational interest?

I am not currently practicing civil engg. but yes I did have to explore a bit because I supervised construction of some mid-rises at some point. That -- and being older than the hills :-)

The (American) International School appears to be most popular among the expats in most countries. Probably because they run a complete curriculum from K through 12, and better organized.

And only use bamboo for structural cantilever ?????

One of our forumers, manbil777, answered a similar question previously...so I will quote him below. Check out the video he links, for a distinctively South Asian solution...

I guess it all comes down to money -- why use steel scaffolding when bamboo is cheap and available. Plus the end result is the same...

Hatirjheel, as far as I know. I noticed you had labeled a shot of same place as "Gulshan Banani Bridge" in a recent post. Now although there are water channels connecting Hatirjheel to Gulshan Lake, I don't think these buildings are near there. Maybe Mirza can clarify...you can also check out Ershad Ahmed's original post. Assuming this is Hatirjheel, I think the government's beautification efforts are starting to reap rewards.

This was a Google translation (:)) -- but if you live in LA it is incredibly hard not to know _some_ Vietnamese. I know the basics to get around. Their food (especially Bánh ḿ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A1nh_m%C3%AC) and Phở (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pho)) is all over the place in LA.

I do stay away from the raw meat (beef) however.

BTW If you go look in the Hanoi and Saigon forum -- it does look pretty similar (if slightly taller) than Dhaka.

I was just suggesting it in general, not for any particular day. Also, the admins don't like banners for a national holidays. So, if we wanted to have a banner for 3/26, we could request it for that day, but not mention that it's for a holiday. That being said, a banner doesn't necessarily need to run on a special occasion. Plus, there may be better images out there. I liked this one because it's so crisp and clean, but there are more impressive skyline shots out there.

Thank you - and please do visit - but in all honesty I seriously doubt Dhaka as a whole is as clean as Tehran, simply because there are many millions of very poor people living in Dhaka today. However, as time goes by and per capita in the country increases, I have no doubt that Dhaka will become a cleaner place as a whole. Of course, as you can tell from the pictures, poverty does not affect all places in Dhaka...so that there are places which are relatively more developed, more affluent, and thus cleaner too.

Dhaka is no different from many other megacities like Mexico City and Shanghai. Same problems, same story.

Dhaka is actually regarded as one of the dirtiest cities in the world... however we do have some of the most wonderful people. And no one can deny the beauty of the countryside....

I cant really agree with that...I have been to many of our neighboring countries and I wouldnt say that I found Dhaka to be one of the dirtiest in the region.....forget about being one of the dirtiest in the world!

^^ Regardless of how it compares to other places, Dhaka has serious problems to solve to improve cleanliness. Trash disposal and collection, littering, the drains / sewage system - all of these are pretty awful in most of Dhaka. Also, Dhaka is still not that big area-wise, and having millions of dirt poor slum and street dwellers without access to basic sanitation in that small space cannot help but create some exceedingly unhealthy environments. All that having been said, these are problems that can be solved, and hopefully eventually will.

I just thought of something. Would a waste disposal business similar to "Waste Management" in the US work in Dhaka instead of relying on the dysfunctional city to do the garbage collection? If dumpsters and dust bins are provided for all residents of buildings, and orderly collection can be conducted, I feel people would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for the service. It's really disgusting to see garbage piled high on Uttara's streets and have humans, cows and other animals rummage through them.

I feel like that's what JICA tried. And many areas including Uttara, Gulshan and Baridhara already collect money (bakshish) for trash collection.

By becoming more clogged and crowded and thus producing more worse traffic jams?
