This is a thread where I'm going to regularily dump all sorts of urban pictures taken by me outside Helsinki downtown. (Edit: page two has some Tln stuff, but that's exception) As Jarmo showed with his thread that Tallinn is not just high-rises and Old Town, my purpose is to show that Helsinki is not just Senate Square and few (mostly ugly-looking) high-rises. I'll start of with Torkkelinmäki hill in Kallio district.

As you might remember, Kallio is the place where my apartment is. It's known for its fair share of drunkards, pubs, prostitution and drunk junkees. In 1970s, it was called "a place not fit for human beings". Plenty of things changed in the 1980s as all of a sudden thousands of students started pouring in, changing the face of Kallio. It's still all different from all other districts of Helsinki and as close to a slum in Helsinki as you can get, some suburbs excluded.

There are plenty of godawful looking buildings in Kallio, especially near and around the Hakaniemi square, but on Torkkelinmäki hill, 100 meters from my apartment, is a beautiful park-like area from the 1920s. The following pictures were taken there last Friday. It's my favourite place in Kallio.

This is what "socialized" housing looked like in 1920s -- quite different from 1960s >>

i would love living there! :)

i'm sure this will become a very interesting thread, thanks Ober!

Thanks to you, Jarmo. I wouldn't mind living in those old, charming "villa-like" buildings either. Torkkelinmäki doesn't feel a bit like Kallio. :)

What I forgot to say was this: anyone with pics from Helsinki metropolitan area can participate (as long as they're not taken in the immediate vicinity of the downtown).

But I guess it's okay to just throw in some comments?:D
Probably.;)

It's nice that you opened this thread, I personally like to see the less-known parts of the cities much more than those shown to tourists.:)

I really like 1920'ies social housing!! It reminds me of Torshov, a kilometer northwest of my place.

Yes, you're free to comment if you want. :D Thank you, both of you!

Last august, Devilution, sdes and me visited Kivenlahti, a suburb in western Espoo, 15 kilometers from downtown Helsinki. It was built in 1970s by the sea and contains two tall residential buildings, Reimarintorni and Meritorni.

Reimarintorni

There's not much to say about it, so let's move on to something more interesting.

Getting inside Meritorni was easy - we waited by the main entrance for some residents to come, which happened very quickly, and walked in after them.

I dunno, it really depends on how much time we've got. If we go to Kivenlahti, I think in that case we'll have to forget the trip to SysOpen Tower / Itäkeskus.

The following pics were taken by sdes in southern Helsinki last August.

Ruoholahti, a newly built district in south western Helsinki.

When we were walking away from Ruoholahti to Lauttasaari, a van carrying Japanese tourists stopped by the street. Suddenly, they took out their cameras and started photographing Itämerentori. :)

Oberleutnant, thanks for the pics from Ruoholahti.

I'm also trying to add some Ruoholahti photos here. but i i'm doing it for the first time and not sure that it will succed.
Photos are scanned from printed paper, so quality isn't the best. They are shoted about 3 years ago.

As first - Sinebrychoff brewery. I don't know anything about it. But i like the way how old and modern is united there.

Sorry, didn't remember to reply to you when I noticed your post. Unlike on some older forums, on SSC you cannot upload pictures from your harddrive straight to the forum. In order for you to be able to show your pics, you need to upload them to an accessible place in the internet.

One such place for hosting your pics is www.imageshack.us

Registering an account there isn't neccessary, but it allows you to later view the pics you've uploaded there and delete them.

Imageshack's handy service automatically generates the tags and the like for you

[IMG]http://img33.exs.cx/img33/2100/yliopisto.jpg
(one of the buildings belonging to the university of Helsinki)

It even creates thumbnails if you want to use them:

Kinda reminds me of this, about 1,5 km from my home. I hope it is okay to post it.

Tack!

@ Arvid

It's okay, no worries. :) As you said in MSN once, there's one thing what Hki and Oslo have in common: some ugly "high"-rise buildings!

@ ch1le

True . . . to people who don't read Estonian: it's a monument dedicated to Finnish soldiers who fought in the Estonian independence war.

Here's some photos from last June's "Helsinki day". The Navy had an open doors day on their ships docked in the harbour, some people from the Army and Air Force were also present.

I know this thread is Ober's project, but since it doesn't have any pics from around here (mid-west Helsinki), I'm gonna chip in. Sorry...just until u're gonna post yours. So here are some pics of Munkkiniemi. I don't have any really good ones, sorry for that, too.

What I forgot to say was this: anyone with pics from Helsinki metropolitan area can participate (as long as they're not taken in the immediate vicinity of the downtown).

And as a late change to the "rules", feel free to post also downtown pics if you're in the mood, and if you've got more stuff from Munkkiniemi or the surrounding areas, post 'em too. :)
