rizalhakim March 9th, 2009, 11:03 AM Moves to get turboprops flying into Skypark Subang
By Presenna NambiarPublished: 2009/03/09
THE government is in talks with two airlines operating turboprops, Riau Airlines and Bangkok Airways, to fly to Skypark Subang.
The developer of Skypark Subang, formerly Terminal 3 of the Subang airport, said there were many turboprop operators in the region and it was keen to bring them here.
"We are facilitating the talks because they are more of a government-to-government issue dealing with landing rights," Subang Skypark Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Ravindran Menon told Business Times.
He said the government has been supportive of Skypark Subang and has indicated that there will be more routes given out to Firefly and Berjaya Air, the two main airlines using the airport currently.
Ravindran said, however, that the operator would not be depending on passenger traffic alone to bring life to Skypark Subang.
"The goal is to make Skypark Subang not just an airport, but a destination for the surrounding community. A place for meetings or just to sit and chat," he said.
Skypark Subang is part of a three-phase initiative to develop the area.
The first phase, which includes the redevelopment of Terminal 3, is almost complete, with only some work left to be done on the facade. It is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
Phase 2 of the redevelopment will start soon as tenders have been called.
It will entail the creation of a regional aviation centre with two maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities, and 10 hangars, run by the Switzerland-based ExecuJet Aviation Group and Australia's Hawker Pacific.
The 4.5ha commercial nexus, part of the third phase, is close to finalising the design.
It will feature a hotel, retail outlets, an aviation museum and a state-of-the-art multi-purpose hall.
Subang Skypark plans to spend RM350 million over the next two years to develop the terminal into an airport city.
Ravindran said the company expects to recoup its investment in 10 years.
rizalhakim March 9th, 2009, 11:04 AM Active participation from China sought
SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) is seeking active participation from China in its quest to transform Senai into a regional transport hub.
It was reported that MMC International Holdings Bhd planned to offer 30% equity in SATS to a company from China to develop the airport into an aviation hub or a duty-free zone.
Billionaire Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, who controls MMC Corp Bhd, made the offer during a working visit to the republic in January with a delegation from MCA.
MMC International is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MMC Corp, which has interests in Senai International Airport, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and Johor Port.
During the four-day trip, the delegation of party members and businessmen led by MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, who is also Transport Minister, met leaders from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and had business meetings with Chinese corporate leaders.
“We discussed how Johor and China can work closely in the economic sector,’’ said SATS deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Abdul Halim who was part of the delegation.
“We are seeking support from China to use the Senai airport as a hub for Chinese airlines to bring Chinese tourists to South-East Asia markets,’’ he said.
Shahrull said the company also wanted to attract companies from China to use Senai airport and PTP as their platforms for manufacturing and logistics activities.
The airport has a 40.46ha Free Zone, of which 24.28ha and 16.18ha are allocated for industrial and commercial use respectively. The port has a 242.81ha district park housing logistics warehouses and factories.
SATS will be launching its multi-billion ringgit Senai Aviation & Airport City project next to the Senai airport in the second quarter of the year.
The area earmarked for an air cargo logistics centre will also house a manufacturing park that will have dedicated space for the manufacture of halal products that Chinese companies could exploit, according to Shahrull.
“They can get halal certification from Malaysia and use Senai to export their products to the Middle East and other Muslim-majority countries,’’ he said.
Conversely, Malaysian companies could use Senai to enter the Chinese market where the prospects for halal products were good.
According to US government figures, there were 20 million Muslims in China in 2006.

The multi-billion ringgit development features residential, commercial properties, medical centres and high-tech park
SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) will be launching the multi-billion ringgit Senai Aviation & Airport City mixed development project in the second quarter of the year.
Sited on 1,133.11ha beside the Senai International Airport, the project would be undertaken by SATS’ wholly-owned subsidiary Enigma Harmoni Sdn Bhd and comprise three main components, said deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Abdul Halim.
Residential, commercial and hospitality amenities will be featured in the first component spanning 323.74ha while an air cargo logistics centre and high-tech park will occupy 404.68ha each.
The entire development would take about 10 years to complete.
Enigma Harmoni has received planning approval from the Kulai Municipal Council for the project which also includes a Customs Inspection Quarantine Complex (CIQ).
“We will launch the high-tech park first as this is a vital component of the entire development,’’ Shahrull said in an interview with StarBiz.
It will be the second high-tech park in the country after Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah.
He said the investment in infrastructure was estimated at about RM1.2bil.
Other facilities will include private medical centres, international schools, premium hotels and duty-free shopping centres.
The high-tech park aims to attract investments in the avionics/aeronautics industry, information and communications technology industry including integrated circuit design, high-tech manufacturing, bio-medical and bio-technology, solar industry, food and agri-technology and environment including renewable energy.
He said among the companies and investors targeted were those in the pharmaceutical industry from Austria, Germany and Switzerland; oil and gas, and solar energy sectors in the United States; and Japan’s motor vehicle sector.
“It is a pre-requisite for companies operating in our park to have research and development (R&D) elements,’’ added Shahrull.
He said there would be a flagship building known as the knowledge centre where most of the R&D activities would be undertaken.
The building will incorporate collapsible office and laboratory incubator concepts where higher learning institutions could bring their undergraduates to undertake R&D studies or programmes with the companies or the industries.
Shahrull said it would collaborate with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia main campus in Skudai, Johor to participate in the university-industry R&D programmes.
He said SATS was looking at participation from China companies in the development and construction of Senai Aviation & Airport City.
Shahrull said it would collaborate with established high-tech park operators in China’s Pearl River Delta region to market the Senai park.
“Ours will probably be the first integrated high-tech park in the world connected to the airport. Similar parks like the ones in Frankfurt and Dubai are located several kilometres from the airport,’’ he said.
Opened in 1974, Senai Airport is managed by SATS which took over the operations of the airport from Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd in 2003.

Aero Mall to open by year-end
AERO Mall, the first stand-alone and external airport mall in Malaysia currently under construction at Senai Airport, is scheduled to open by year-end.
The RM70mil mall offers 3,716.12 sq m of retail space.
Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd general manager finance and retail development Chan Kwai Yew said the mall would be positioned and marketed as the new lifestyle hub in the area.
“Shopping, dining and entertaining at airports is getting popular as airports are no longer just places for air travellers or well-wishers to send off airborne passengers,’’ he said in an interview.

Chan said Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 3 was the best example of this as it had successfully attracted non-air travellers and residents from nearby areas to shop and dine there.
SATS is targeting the business community, executives and senior managers working in the nearby industrial estates and the 192,000 population (2005 figure) in the Senai-Kulai area.
Chan said Aero Mall would also complement the Senai Aviation & Airport City to be launched in the second quarter of the year.
Meanwhile, Plaza Premium Management Ltd has chosen Senai airport for its third Plaza Premium Lounge in the country after KL International Airport and the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal.
Plaza Premium Lounge is the world’s first commercial VIP lounge open to airport users irrespective of airlines, travel class, air miles or membership programme.
“We have invested RM500,000 for the Senai lounge and see good prospects as Senai-Kulai is located within the Iskandar Malaysia growth corridor,’’ said chief financial officer Clarence Chiu.
rizalhakim March 19th, 2009, 03:55 AM SATS to woo more cargo operators to Senai airport
Published: 2009/03/19
SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS), the operator of Senai International Airport, will aggressively court more air cargo companies to set up operation at Malaysia's southern most airport, and along with it, increase its connectivity.
Deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Alam Shah said increased connectivity at Senai airport will enable Malaysia to address the long-standing problem of cargo leakages to its neigbouring country.
Currently, he said, more than 30 per cent of Malaysia's cargo is shipped overseas through Singapore's airport and port.
"Many shippers are still sending their cargoes through the neigbouring country, but as we (SATS) increase the connectivity at Senai airport, we can entice them to use our airport instead.
"As we develop our connectivity, hopefully we can plug the (nation's cargo) leakages," he said after signing an agreement between SATS and US-based Logistics Air Inc in Johor Baru yesterday.
The agreement, signed with Logistic Air's owner, Kevin Cooyar, was for the relocation of the company's main overseas base from RKT International Airport in the United Arab Emirates to Senai airport.
Logistic Air is SATS' pioneer major customer for the multi- billion ringgit Senai Aviation and Airport City mixed development project announced and launched in June last year.
Shahrull said SATS is also approaching several air cargo operators to operate from Senai airport.
Under the agreement, Logistic Air will initially lease 1.4ha of land for the setting-up of its main base outside the US, with an option to further lease an additional 2.6ha for its future expansion.
According to Shahrull, the deal fits well into SATS' overall Aviation and Airport City development plan.
"Logistic Air's decision to choose Senai airport as its main overseas base clearly demonstrates the potential that they (the company) see in the airport and its location. It will definitely help expedite the development of the Senai Aviation and Airport City into a world-class maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) base," he said.
Meanwhile, Cooyar said the company's relocation to Senai airport was because it wanted to be close to an area of mass travel requirements and cargo activities.
Logistic Air plans to use the airport as its main base overseas for its B747 aircraft for cargo and passenger charters throughout the region. It is also eyeing the growing regional market for pilgrimage charters and United Nations' peacekeepers deployment.
"We foresee the potential of a significant amount of air cargo being generated in the near future from Iskandar Malaysia, which aims to develop the region into a manufacturing and logistics hub," he said.
Presently, Logistic Air owns nine B747 aircraft.
Cooyar said Logistic Air is also looking at the possibility of setting up a parts warehouse facility at Senai airport to service airlines in the region and provide wet and dry lease services and passenger charters.
He added that the company also plans to establish an MRO centre at the airport that is capable of performing aircraft checks and maintenance services. - Bernama
rizalhakim March 19th, 2009, 04:07 AM US air logistics provider makes Senai its regional hub
By ZAZALI MUSA
SENAI: California-based Logistic Air Inc has chosen Senai Airport for its main overseas base outside the United States to tap the surge in demand for aviation-related activities in the region.
General manager Kevin Cooyar said the company’s core business was leasing aircraft to airlines or operators of air-passenger charter services and transporting air cargo.
He said although the aviation segment was experiencing a slowdown in tandem with the global recession, it would boom again once the situation improved.
“By choosing Senai, we want to be closer to a region of mass air-travel requirements and mass air-cargo activities,’’ Cooyar told a press conference yesterday.
He said this at an agreement signing between Logistic Air and Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS), which was represented by deputy chief operating officer Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim.
Logistic Air will relocate its main overseas base, operating since 2001, from RKT International Airport in the United Arab Emirates to Senai Airport this year.
Founded in 1999, Logistic Air owns nine Boeing 747 Jumbo airplanes and leases them to airlines and charter operators to carry cargoes and passengers.
Cooyar said for a start, the company would focus on leasing its aircraft to operators carrying the pilgrims to Saudi Arabia as demand for such services surged during the haj season.
He said it was not financially feasible for airlines to invest in aircraft, crew and maintenance of the planes during the three-month haj period as the planes would be grounded when the season ended.
“A company like ours can provide such services during the season, which is good for end-users and also the operators,’’ he added.
He said that in the last three years, Logistic Air provided such services to Air India to transport haj pilgrims from India and was now looking at Indonesia and Malaysia.
He added that it also planned to transport umrah (minor haj) pilgrims during the rest of the year and peace-keeping soldiers under the United Nations.
Cooyar said the prospect was good for aircraft leasing and air charter business as airlines in Asia and North America had stopped offering such services.
He said the company would look at offering air-cargo services on a joint-venture basis with SATS in the future as the latter had ties with Johor Port and Port of Tanjung Pelepas.
rizalhakim March 22nd, 2009, 01:13 PM MMC shareholders say Yes to Senai Airport deal
By Adeline Paul RajPublished: 2009/03/21
MMC Corp Bhd's (2194) shareholders approved its controversial plan to buy Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) for RM1.7 billion despite strong objection from minorities.
At an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) yesterday, which dragged on for four hours, minority shareholders were vocal, making it clear they were against MMC paying such a hefty price in the related-party deal.
MMC is owned by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, who is also a shareholder in SATS.
"The minorities were very unhappy and almost wanted to stage a walkout. But we managed to tell them not to do so, and vote," said Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG) chief executive officer Rita Benoy Bushon, who attended the EGM.
Bushon said the MMC chairman had invoked his discretion to have a poll instead of a vote by hands and, in the end, 97 per cent voted in favour of the deal.
This was because minority shareholders were few in number. The majority of the non-interested parties who could vote on the deal comprised institutional investors.
MMC is to pay RM580 million for SATS' loss-making Senai Inter-national Airport and RM1.12 billion for land which will be developed as an "airport city".
"I'm not against them buying SATS; it's just the price. It's a valuation argument, that's all," a minority shareholder said.
He, and others, was irked that valuations were based on projected values rather than the current value.
Some felt that MMC, which has some RM20 billion debt, should be preserving its cash now that the economy was slowing down. Others felt that it should wait for a better price.
For MMC, the buy enables it to exploit SATS' potential to become a regional cargo and logistics hub.
MMC chief executive officer Hasni Harun did not face the press yesterday, but in a statement reiterated that the SATS purchase was commercially viable and in the long-term interest of the group and stakeholders.
"With this, MMC will own the only privatised airport in the country and it will create value to the group's transport and logistics business," he said.
Asked if she was happy the deal would go through, Bushon replied: "I had expected that the board would have somehow looked at the valuation again."
She said the board had given assurance, however, that it would be accountable for the purchase. The deal is expected to be accretive in two years.
rizalhakim April 14th, 2009, 04:57 AM Firefly expects JB-Penang route to be over 70% full
JOHOR BARU: Budget carrier Firefly Sdn Bhd expects a minimum load factor of 70% for its Johor Baru-Penang route which will start early next month.
Its head of marketing/communications, Angelina Fernandez, said bookings for the route, especially from the business community, had been positive.
She said the average load factor for all its routes on weekdays ranged from 60% to 65% and on weekends, up to 100%.
“Our fares are affordable and flying with Firefly is so much more convenient and hassle-free compared to conventional transportation,” she told a media briefing on the cooperation with Sri America Travel (SAT) to offer tour packages to Penang and Koh Samui in Thailand from Johor.
SAT has booked 20 seats on Firefly’s daily JB-Penang flight.
Fernandez said that despite the current economic slowdown, Firefly had remained optimistic about the demand for domestic and regional travel.
In conjunction with the announcement, SAT would offer a three-day and two-night Penang package at RM399 per person and five-day four-night Penang plus Langkawi holiday package at RM699 per person. – Bernama
SAT regional manager Kathryn Lee said three-day two-night Koh Samui free and easy package would be offered at RM899 per person while the four-day three-night Koh Samui Getaway package would be RM999 per person.
Firefly will launch the Subang-Phuket route on May 1, Subang-Bertam on May 2 and Subang-Padang on May 15.
It will increase its Kerteh flights to seven a week from its current five, starting mid-May.
Firefly to begin Senai to Penang flights soon
JOHOR BARU: Firefly will begin flights from Senai airport to Penang starting May 1.
It has also started offering holiday packages from here to Koh Samui, Thailand; and Penang.
The airline is also expected to increase flights on its current route from Senai to Subang to three times daily beginning next month.
Firefly marketing and communications head Angelina Fernandez said Firefly had entered into a business collaboration with travel agency Sri America Travel Corp (J) Sdn Bhd (SA Travel) to sell the holiday packages.
“Our business partnership with SA Travel will now offer Johoreans holiday packages with direct connectivity into Penang and also Koh Samui via Kuala Lumpur,” she said at a press conference at the Senai airport yesterday.
She added that Firefly was confident of the partnership’s success because of SA Travel’s local expertise, network and reputation.
Fernandez said Firefly was also optimistic about the demand for domestic and regional travel despite the present economic situation.
Meanwhile, SA Travel southern regional manager Kathryn Lee said they were excited about the partnership with Firefly.
“Koh Samui is a new holiday destination and offers a quiet and scenic getaway,” she said, adding that SA Travel would offer packages to Penang, Langkawi and Koh Samui from RM399 to RM999.
rizalhakim April 17th, 2009, 05:53 AM Malaysian bird life expo at Senai Airport
JOHOR BARU: Visitors travelling through Senai Airport are being greeted by an interesting photo exhibition on birds at the arrival and departure lounges.
The exhibition features photos and facts compiled by the Malaysian Nature Society of Johor (MNSJ) over a four-year period.
Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) corporate communications manager Bob Lee said the exhibition was launched to shed light on the rich local bird life.
Lee hoped the exhibition would portray the importance of wildlife conservation and keep the birds safe, especially those that were rare and endangered.
He said the exhibition, part of the airport’s corporate social responsibility effort, would include more exhibits at the Aeromall soon.
Lee added that SATS hoped the exhibition would connect birdwatchers from around the world in tandem with its continuous efforts to enhance air connectivity.
Meanwhile, MNSJ advisor Vincent Chow said that birdwatching was relatively new in Malaysia but was popular in the United States, Europe and Japan.
He pointed out that there were 600 species of migratory birds that frequented Johor, of which almost half were local species.
Chow noted that bird watching had the potential to attract revenue as it could be classified as eco-tourism.
“Not many Malaysians know about the abundance of bird species here,” he said.
He hoped the exhibition would draw visitors to the World Migratory Bird Day event next month in Parit Jawa from May 7-9.
Among the photos on display were images of the lesser adjutant stork.
This species of stork is endangered and Johor accounts for 1% of the world’s population of the species.

SUWARTINI Said (kiri) dan Nurain Md. Hudzari menerangkan mengenai model Senai Hi-Tech Hub pada Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia di Plaza Angsana, Johor Bahru semalam.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOHOR BAHRU 26 April - Syarikat konglomerat MMC Corporation Bhd.
Ditanya mengenai status terbaru pengambilan alih Senai Terminal Services Sdn.
nazrey May 3rd, 2009, 12:04 PM Works on Senai hi-tech park in June
14 April 2009 , New Straits Time
THE country's second high-tech industrial park in Senai is expected to begin construction in June.
The RM3.3 billion project, which also includes a Free Trade Zone, would spur development and boost the standard of living in Kulaijaya.
Kulaijaya Municipal Council president Ismail Karim said the project would become a major attraction for investors in the district, which is part of Iskandar Malaysia.
Ismail said that the hi-tech park would become a big money-earner for Kulaijaya and its people.
"The future looks bright for Kulaijaya with the airport expansion and nearby Free Trade Zone at the hi-tech park.
"It would provide opportunities for large-scale manufacturers. It would also facilitate the trading of products as they are tax-exempted," said Ismail after a full council meeting on March 30.
Developed by Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd, the park would be built on a 1,120ha site adjacent to the Sultan Ismail Airport in Senai.
It is expected to be built in three phases in the next 10 to 12 years.
Ismail said Johor Corporation was planning another multi-million ringgit industrial area for mid-range manufacturers in Sedenak, about 31km north of Senai.
"The Sedenak industrial area would be an alternative base for manufacturers as most industrial areas in Skudai and Senai are already operating at full capacity," said Ismail.

rizalhakim May 14th, 2009, 10:38 AM Cargo airline to operate from Senai airport
Published: 2009/05/14
The plan to make Senai International Airport in Johor a regional cargo hub is becoming closer to reality, with a cargo airline company agreeing to commence operations there from next month.
Senai Airport Terminal Services (SATS) Sdn Bhd deputy chief operations officer Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim said the company is also the first to do so.
"It is a breakthrough. When the cargo airline company begins operations, it will attract other players from the logistics industry to also use Senai Airport to fly out their cargo.
"The move will also serve as a catalyst in our efforts to make the Senai Airport a regional logistics and cargo hub," he told Bernama in an interview at his office recently.
At present, cargo from the Senai Airport is ferried using MAS passenger flights as well as AirAsia, which operates from there.
Senai Airport is located within the Iskandar Malaysia Economic Corridor.
Asked as to the identity of the cargo airline company which is commencing operations from Senai Airport, Shahrull Allam Shah declined to name it.
But he confirmed that it was a company of international standard.
He also said that for a start, the cargo airline company will operate flights to regional destinations before expanding to the Middle east and Europe.
He indicated that when customers see that Senai Airport offers consistent and efficient cargo services, with multiple routes, they will make it the airport of their choice for air cargo within the region.
SATS, according to him, is always striving to attract airline companies, irrespective of whether they are cargo or passenger based, to operate from Senai Airport.
"We have specific programmes to create connectivity at Senai Airport. We hope to get more cargo operators to the airport," he said.
According to Shahrull Allam Shah, the company is providing an area of 1,000 acres close to the airport, for the logistics industry along with the plan to develop it as the regional cargo hub.
Meanwhile, he also disclosed that SATS was in discussions with with several companies interested in providing aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul(MRO) as well as other flight related services at the airport.
"Some of the companies concerned have aleady agreed to begin operations at Senai Airport.
"We are in the final stages of getting the approval of authorities such as the Department of Civil Aviation and the Transport Ministry," he said.
Last March, SATS signed an agreement with Air Logistics Inc, a United States-based company, to shift its overseas base from the United Arab Emirates to Senai Airport.

JOHOR BAHRU 14 Mei - Usaha menjadikan Lapangan Terbang Senai sebagai pusat kargo serantau semakin menjadi kenyataan apabila sebuah syarikat penerbangan kargo bersetuju untuk memulakan operasi di lapangan terbang itu mulai bulan depan.
Timbalan Ketua Pegawai Operasi Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd.
- Bernama

BANGKOK: AirAsia is stopping its Bangkok-Johor Baru route beginning July this year, the second time it is taking such measures.
In an email to passengers who have booked flights from July onward, the budget carrier said AK5632 from Senai and the returning AK5633 would be cancelled.
In February 2008, AirAsia resumed its Bangkok-Johor Baru route with four flights a week, flying on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
It had intended to be the first destination in Thailand from Johor Baru, targeting Johoreans, Singaporeans and those flying into the city from Sabah and Sarawak, but low load factor forced AsiaAsia to scrap the route.
AirAsia and its Thai subsidiary, Thai AirAsia, operate seven flights daily from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, as well as serving Krabi, Phuket and Chiang Mai, on top of the Penang-Bangkok route.

nazrey June 24th, 2009, 01:36 PM RM180 Million Spent To Upgrade Airport
June 24, 2009 17:29 PM
NUSAJAYA, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd has spent RM180 million to implement several projects to upgrade the passenger terminal, operations complex and cargo terminal at the Sultan Ismail International Airport (LTSI) in Senai.
Johor Local Government, Housing, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil said, works to extend the runway from 3.35km to 3.8km to cater to larger aircraft, passenger terminal expansion and commercial area were also underway.
"These works costing RM300 million began since August last year, and are part of the airport's long-term plan to turn LTSI into a cost-effective air logistics base with world-class infrastructure," he said when answering a question from Ng See Tiong (BN-Parit Yaani), Ng Kow Meng (DAP-Senai) and M. Munusamy (BN-Permas) at the Johor State Assembly in Kota Iskandar here today.
Ahmad Zahri said, upon its completion next June, LTSI which was furnished with an Aeromall, would also have a wider passenger area, basement parking, restaurants and commercial area to suit the lifestyle of Senai residents.
Meanwhile, state unity, manpower, science, technology and innovation committee chairman M. Asojan said, 6,154 local and foreign employees in the state had lost their jobs due to the economic downturn, between last October and May.
He said the retrenchment involved 162 companies, especially those in the manufacturing, electronics and textile sectors.
"Of the 6,154 workers, 3,929 are locals while the rest are foreigners," he said, answering a question from M. Munusamy (BN-Permas) and Dr Shahrudin Md Salleh (BN-Jorak).
To help retrenched workers, he said the Johor Labour Department was trying to contact those who were laid off.
"So far, 2,142 have been contacted and 669 given new jobs, while 688 have applied for training and relocation," added Asojan.

NST Online » Local News 2009/06/25
SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) is spending RM180 million on development projects at the airport, including the upgrading of the passenger terminal, management complex and cargo terminal.
Currently, work to extend the runway from 3.35km to 3.8km to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft, the expansion of the passenger terminal and commercial areas is being carried out, Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil said yesterday.
The State Local Government, Housing, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman said the RM300 million projects were part of SATS' long-term plan to develop the airport as a cost-effective logistic air base with infrastructure of international standards.
"Work began last August. By June next year, the airport will be equipped with an expanded passenger management terminal, an underground carpark, restaurants and business centres that will suit Senai town's community lifestyle," said Zahri in reply to questions by Ng See Tiong (BN-Parit Yaani), Ng Kow Meng (DAP-Senai) and M.Munusamy (BN-Permas).

JOHOR BARU: The viewing deck at the Senai Airport here, which is the main attraction at the airport will be reopened by June 2010.
Local Government, Housing, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil said the area was closed for renovation works.
“The viewing deck, where visitors catch a glimpse of aeroplanes taking off was closed due to safety measures set by the local authority,” he said in response to the questions asked by Ng See Tiong (BN-Parit Yaani) and Ong Kow Meng (DAP-Senai) on when the area would be reopened to the public.
Both state assemblymen raised their concerns about the matter saying that the viewing deck actually attracted many visitors to the airport.
Ahmad Zahri also said that RM180mil was spent for several upgrading projects which included the passenger and cargo terminals and an enclosed parking lot that has started its operations.
He said that the upgrading works of the runway and taxiway were ongoing and the new runway could accommodate wide body aircrafts.
“The new runway will be extended to 3.8km from the previous 3.35km,” he said in response to a question asked by Munusamy Mareemuthu (BN-Permas) on the cost spent for the project.
He added the other facilities being upgraded were the expansion of the passenger terminal and the construction of shop units.
“The shops will not only cater to the needs of the airport users but also to the residents in surrounding areas,” he said adding a shuttle bus would also be provided.
Meanwhile Johor Women, Family, Community Development and Health committee chairman Dr Robiah Kosai said the reported cases of dengue in the state for 22nd week showed a decrease of 5.4% compared to last year.
Dr Robiah said that 1,304 cases of the disease were reported in the state with Johor Baru topping the list with 829 cases followed by Segamat and Kulaijaya with 102 cases and 82 cases respectively.
“We have identified vacant land as the biggest cause for breeding the mosquitoes,” she said adding that the irresponsible actions of certain people throwing rubbish on vacant land gave these pests places to breed.
Dr Robiah said that anyone who thinks they have contracted the dengue virus should immediately get treated at the nearest hospital.

In February 2008, AirAsia resumed its Bangkok-Johor Baru route with four flights a week, flying on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Airasia to resume JB-Bangkok route
Published: 2009/07/17
Low cost carrier AirAsia is resuming it's Johor Baru-Bangkok flight beginning July 21, three weeks after it stopped the service.
And the resumption of the two-hour long flight from the Senai airport here has met with approval from the State tourism authority and travel agents alike.
But the question which still trouble them is whether AirAsia would commit themselves to continue servicing the route or put a stop to it like the previous two occasions where they decided that the JB-Bangkok route would no longer be part of their operations.
The AirAsia JB-Bangkok flight was first introduced in 2005 but it was stopped a year later, and in February 2008 the flight resumed only to be stopped again in the beginning of July this year.
Johor executive councillor in charge of tourism Hoo Seong Chang welcomed AirAsia's latest decision but he cautioned against the disruption of the service in future.
"It's the state goverment's policy to make the Senai airport into a passenger hub and therefore we welcome any airlines which want to fly or land here.
"AirAsia has been supportive but I can also understand the situation they are caught in sometimes. They told us that the low load factor is one reason why they sometimes stop certain flight.
"Maybe the situation now with the spread of the HIN1 virus is preventing people from travelling but I urge AirAsia to be more patient. When the situation improves more people will travel," said Hoo.
The resumption of the flight has also been welcomed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) which sees the JB-Bangkok flight as very convenient for travellers from Johor.
In fact, Thailand or rather Bangkok in particular remains a favourite holiday destination for Malaysians with arrival at 1.82 million for the year 2008, an increase of 18 per cent from the previous year's arrival of 1.54 million.
"The figures are encouraging but at the same time, to go on a holiday to Thailand also means value for money," said Richard Lim, the TAT marketing manager for Malaysia and Brunei. -- BERNAMA

nazrey September 6th, 2009, 11:22 PM Direct Freighter Service From Senai Airport To Narita
September 06, 2009 15:11 PM
JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- As part of its efforts to boost its aircargo connectivity, Senai Airport Terminal Services (SATS) signed an agreement with MASkargo on Saturday to provide direct cargo services between Johor and Narita, Japan.
The first flight departed Senai Airport, Johor Bahru on Sunday, Sept 6, 2009 at 0215 and arrived in Narita, Japan at 0955 later the same morning.
For now, MASkargo will fly the 130 tonne B747-400F frieghter once weekly from Kuala Lumpur every Saturday on MH6190 and from Narita every Sunday on MH6191, SATS said in a statement here.
Among the cargo transported are electronic equipment and gadgets, garments as well as perishable items such as flowers and tuna fish.
Managing Director of MASkargo, En Shahari Sulaiman said the new service out of Johor will help strengthen MASkargo's position as one of Asia's best air cargo carrier.
"We have added this new route to meet the growing demand for cargo in the southern region. We see Johor Bahru as having vast potential growth for business and we are assisting the Iskandar Development Region to develop the Southern Economic Corridor."
"This service is expected to complement Singapore Changi while simultaneously tapping into the potential of Batam and Riau," he said.
"Batam is one of the largest islands in the Riau Archipelago, and a major center of international trade, industry and commerce with it being located strategically close to the Malacca Straits" he said.
"As the development of Iskandar Malaysia is envisaged to attract more manufacturers and industries to the area, MASkargo looks forward to working closely with SATS to develop an efficient air logistics hub for Iskandar Malaysia," he added.
He said that MASkargo was also working hand-in-hand with freight forwarders who were previously looking for an avenue to uplift cargo out of Johor Bahru.
"MASkargo hopes to expand the logistics growth in Johor as there has been a leakage of cargo movement via neighbouring countries," said.
At present, MASkargo operates daily truck flights in and out of Singapore by its subsidiary, MASkargo Logistics Sdn Bhd.
The introduction of this KUL-JHB-NRT will allow MASkargo to have a wider presence globally especially in the Orient region. MASkargo is now able to offer customers more direct services and competitive advantage over the other cargo operators of Johor," said Shahari.
The agreement was signed by Shahari representing MASkargo while SATS was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman.
Mohd Sidik said that the demand for air freight services in Johor was projected to grow even further with the dvelopments taking place in Iskandar Malaysia.
He said this was partly due to the potential shown by Johor and Iskandar Malaysia's industrial and manufacturing export sectors.
Mohd Sidik also said that in order to meet the increased demand for reliable air freight services in Johor, SATS would play its part to develop itself into an efficient logistics and regional cargo hub.
"Among others, the development includes the extension of the runway to 3,800 meters, a parallel taxiway and associated high-speed turn-off taxiways to increase runway capacity; and developing a well-equipped cargo terminal capable of handling up to 80,000 tones of cargo per annum," he said.

Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) will only break even in 2013/2014 despite new deals and plans, OSK Research says.
SATS is a unit of MMC Corp Bhd which has secured a deal with MASkargo Sdn Bhd to launch a new weekly freighter service to Narita, Japan, and received a notification last week from the International Trade and Industry Ministry to proceed with the development of the country's second high-tech park, namely Senai High Tech Park.
"In both cases, there are no changes to our forecasts and we continue to see SATS only breaking even in 2013/2014," said OSK in its research report today.
Beside the deals, OSK said, the SATS management had also indicated that it was in talks with Japan Airlines as well as Qatar Airways for other freight routes to the Far East and the Middle East.
"These partnerships are part of a programme, where funding from the government is provided to secure space on the cargo airlines to promote connectivity to Senai," it said. -- Bernama
nazrey September 9th, 2009, 05:00 AM Senai Airport jangka pulang modal 2013
9 September 2009
KUALA LUMPUR 8 Sept. - Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn. Bhd.
Mengenai Recycle Energy Sdn.
Bagaimanapun, perkembangannya agak perlahan sejak empat tahun lepas.

SENAI: Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) will launch the first of three “components” of the multi-billion ringgit Senai Aviation & Airport City project by year-end.
Deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Abdul Halim said the first component, on a 323.74ha site, comprised residential, commercial and hospitality amenities.
The other two components in the mixed development project are an air cargo logistics centre and a high-tech park, each occupying a 404.68ha site.
“The first component’s launch involves the commercial and hospitality segment while the residential side will take place when the time is appropriate,’’ Shahrull told StarBiz in an interview.

He said the initial launch would cover a 12.94ha site, of which 10.52ha would be for the commercial precinct and 2.42ha for the hospitality section.
“The hospitality component, comprising two hotel blocks and a convention centre, will be developed in three phases and the project will take 24 months to complete,’’ he said.
The development of the hotels and the convention centre will come under Johor-based Tiong Nam Logistics Holdings Bhd, according to Shahrull.
Shahrull said apart from factory outlets, the commercial area would also have logistics and warehousing facilities.
“We want to position the commercial area as a regional wholesale centre to attract buyers from countries in the region,’’ he said, adding that an international wholesale operator with a similar operation in Dubai had decided to invest in the commercial project and would manage the wholesale centre while SATS would provide the land.
SATS subsidiary Enigma Harmoni Sdn Bhd, which is linked to billionaire Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, has received approval from the Kulai Municipal Council for the airport city project.
MMC International Holdings Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Syed Mokhtar’s MMC Corp Bhd, has stakes in Senai International Airport, Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port.
The entire development, which is located next to the Senai Airport, also includes a Customs Inspection Quarantine Complex and will take about 10 years to complete.
The project is estimated to cost about RM1.2bil with the Senai Airport Hi-Tech Park set to be the second high-tech park in the country after Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah.
Opened in 1974, Senai Airport is managed by SATS, which took over the operations of the airport from Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd in 2003.

AERO Mall, the first stand-alone and external airport mall in Senai, Johor, currently under construction at Senai Airport, is scheduled to open by year-end.

Former CEO of Kulim Hi-Tech Park to helm subsidiary
JOHOR BARU: Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) has formed a new subsidiary, called Senai Hi-Tech Park Sdn Bhd (SHTP), to oversee the Senai Hi-Tech Park project.
SATS deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim said the company has also appointed former Kulim Technology Park Corp Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin to helm the subsidiary.
Shahrull said as CEO of SHTP, Ahmad would be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the park.
“We believe that with his vast experience managing Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Ahmad will contribute immensely to Senai Hi-Tech Park,’’ he told StarBiz yesterday.
»It is a pre-requisite for companies operating in our park to have R&D elements« SATS CEO, SHAHRULL ALLAM SHAH ABDUL HALIM
Shahrull said SHTP would be calling for tenders for earthworks of the project before the end of the year, followed by infrastructure work.
International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said recently that the Federal Government had agreed in principle to part finance the infrastructure work for the Senai Hi-Tech Park.
The Government would allocate RM300mil for the infrastructure work while the balance of RM215mil would be borne by the developer.
Senai Hi-Tech Park will be the second high-tech park in Malaysia after Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah.
Shahrull said SHTP had recently started marketing the project to foreign investors in Germany and Singapore and would be going to the United States next month and Japan early next year.
He added that the high-tech park aimed to attract investments in the avionics/aeronautics industry, information and communications technology industry including integrated circuit design and high-tech manufacturing, among others.
Among the companies and investors targeted are those in the pharmaceuticals industry from Austria, Germany and Switzerland; oil and gas and solar energy sectors in the United States; and Japan’s motor vehicle sector.
“It is a pre-requisite for companies operating in our park to have research and development (R&D) elements,” he said, adding that there would be a flagship building known as the knowledge centre where most of the R&D activities would be undertaken.
Senai Hi-Tech Park, spanning 404.68ha, is located next to Senai International Airport and is one of the three components of the multi-billion ringgit Senai Aviation & Airport City project, the other two components being residential and commercial, in addition to an air cargo logistics centre occupying a 404.68ha site.
“Our park will probably be the first integrated high-tech park in the world connected to the airport. Similar parks like the ones in Frankfurt and Dubai are located several kilometres away from the airport,’’ Shahrull said.

It will cater to both air passengers and non-travellers
SENAI: The Senai International Airport is to be remodelled into a community airport and new lifestyle hub in the Senai-Skudai flagship development zone of Iskandar Malaysia.
Airport operator Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim said as a community airport, it would cater to both air passengers and non-travellers.
“Airports no longer cater for just air travellers but also non-passengers to shop, dine and entertain,” he said in an interview with StarBiz recently.
He said the best example was Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal Three, which has successfully attracted non-air travellers and residents from nearby areas to shop and dine there.
Under Iskandar Malaysia’s Comprehensive Development Plan, the Senai-Skudai area will house activities in the electrical and electronic, food products, agro-products, engineering-based industries, warehousing, logistic and airport services.
Development in the area is focused on the airport, hubs for cargo and knowledge, a multimodal centre and the MSC Cyberport City to provide the supporting services and workforce. “Aero Mall is currently under construction. Upon its completion in the first quarter next year, the mall will attract non-air travellers to the airport,” said Shahrull.
The mall also targets the business community, executives and senior managers working in the nearby industrial estates and the 192,000 residents (2005 figure) in the Senai-Kulai area.
The RM93mil mall is the first-stand alone and external airport mall in the country and is connected to the present airport terminal building.
An extension of the airport’s present retail section, the mall will increase the current retail area from 2,601.28 sq ft to 7,745.78 sq ft with 25 retail outlets.
Shahrull said tenants at the new mall would include Sox World, Starbucks, Laksa Shack, KFC, Kyros Kebab, Kinsahi Japanese Restaurant, MPH Bookstore and Secret Recipe.

The RM93mil Aero Mall at Senai International Airport is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2010.
He said SATS was looking to sign up a supermarket or department store operator for a dedicated retail lot of over 1,800 sq m.
Also in the pipeline was the 2.42ha Food Village, a project that would kick off in April and open for business in June, he said. The Food Village will offer Johor signature dishes such mee rebus, Muar mee bandung, nasi briyani, laksa Johor, and other Asian-style street and fusion food in a gazebo-style setting.
Shahrull said SATS would engage a private food and beverage operator that would be responsible for hiring individual tenants for the place.
There would also be a 2,787.09 sq m stand-alone fast food-chain outlet at the Food Village, run by one of the famous quick service restaurants in the world, he said.
“Malaysians eat around the clock, so the Food Village will open 24/7. It will also be the perfect place for air passengers, especially foreigners, to try our local cuisine,” said Shahrull.
Also to be developed on a 4.85ha site within the airport vicinity would be a mini theme park incorporating water features, slides and rock climbing, he said.
Aero Mall is part of the multi-billion ringgit Senai Aviation & Airport City development project and comes under SATS subsidiary, Enigma Harmoni Sdn Bhd.
Spanning over 1,133.10ha, the airport city project comprises three components – residential, commercial and hospitality amenities; an air cargo logistics centre and a high technology park.
MMC International Holdings Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of billionaire Tan Sri Syed Mohkhtar Al-Bukhary’s MMC Corp Bhd, has stakes in Senai Airport, Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port.
Opened in 1974, Senai Airport is managed by SATS, which took over the airport’s operations from Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd in 2003.

SENAI Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS), the operator of Senai International Airport in Johor, expects to be profitable this year, seven years after securing the concession in 2003.
Deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim said the Senai free zone, the aviation park and the soon-to-be-opened Aeromall will be the main drivers of growth for the firm.
"We are positive on the outlook for this year. We will have a positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation for the fiscal year ending December 31 2010," he told Business Times in an interview.
While the firm is operationally profitable, it has been in the red due to interest payments on loans it took to buy 1,120ha of plantation land next to the airport. The land is to be developed into a RM4 billion high technology park, with a loan repayment period of over 10 years.
Shahrull said SATS broke even last year on RM60 million revenue, attributing it to its turnaround measures.
The firm's revenue is mainly contributed by its aeronautical business and the rest from non-aeronautical activities such as retail and land development.
However, it expects the composition of revenue to change in the future.
Meanwhile, construction and infrastructure developments on the high-tech park will begin next month.
SATS also has 4ha of land fronting Senai Airport where it will build a 200-room hotel, apartments, offices and retail lots, worth more than RM200 million.
Next to this, SATS has a 8ha site to be developed as an international trade centre, together with the Wenzhou Association of China, with an investment of RM200 million.
The development of the Aeromall on a 20ha site, annexed to Senai Airport, is 65 per cent completed and targeted to open in the third quarter of 2010.
Shahrull said he expects the development to finish by end-June, which is six months behind target.
Aeromall is an extension to the existing terminal. The single-storey triangular structure with a central concourse area will be flanked by thematically designed retail and food outlets covering total retail space of 83,375 sq ft.
"We will try to attract a variety of tenants for the mall. For now, 60 per cent of the retail floor area has been leased. We have firm interests from various retailers and branded outlets," Shahrull added.

Passenger and cargo traffic through the Senai International Airport in Johor is expected to grow significantly this year, driven by new airline services and projected new investments in Johor's Iskandar region.
Last year, the number of passengers using the airport fell 10 per cent to 1.47 million, while cargo volume dropped sharply to 5,200 tonnes due to the global economic crisis.
"A successful economic region like Iskandar will need good air and sea connectivity to facilitate the import of raw materials and export of finished goods.
"(As such,) additional cargo connectivity will not only further increase the air cargo volume at Senai Airport, but complement Iskandar's effort to transform the region into an integrated logistics and tourism hub," Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) deputy chief executive officer Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim told Business Times in an interview.
SATS, a unit of MMC Corp, has a 50-year concession to maintain, operate and develop the Senai Airport.
Currently, airlines operating out of the airport comprise Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly, while cargo airlines include MASkargo and Qatar Airways Cargo.
Senai Airport has a handling capacity of 4.5 million passengers and 100,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
"We have plans to grow the airport and attract new airlines and freighters. We are looking at regional cargo to increase our air cargo volumes," Shahrull said.
The airport operator expects passenger traffic to increase to 1.6 million by 2014, taking into account projected population growth within the Iskandar region from 1.4 million in 2005 to three million by 2025.
Cargo volume, meanwhile, will grow to 40,000 tonnes a year, spurred by existing and new services from foreign freighters.
SATS has a 20-year master-plan for developing the airport. The masterplan, from 2003 to 2023, will be developed in phases.
Under the first phase, which has been duly completed, and the second phase, which is expected to complete by mid-2010, SATS will enhance passenger and cargo facilities and set up a logistics and aviation park within the airport.
The third phase, commencing in the current quarter, is to develop a free zone, cargo and logistics hub, high-tech industry park and a mixed development. Dubbed "Senai Airport City", these developments will cost over RM5 billion.
Shahrull said activities from the Senai Airport City are expected to help develop critical mass for Senai Airport.
Once completed, Senai Airport will not just be a passenger airport to cater for the southern states of Malaysia, it will also offer a complete air cargo logistics, industrial and high tech facility within the Airport City.
SATS, together with Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and Johor Port will form an integrated logistics hub and provide the sea-air connectivity to facilitate the movement of goods in and out of Johor and south of Malaysia.

zaza@thestar.com.my
JOHOR BARU: Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) wants to position and develop the Senai International Airport as one of the leading multi-modal airports in the region.
Chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the airport would not only provide aviation-related activities but also venture into non-aviation services.
“Airports the world over have evolved over the years and many of them have diversified into non-core activities to improve their earnings,” he said in an interview with StarBiz.
Sidik said SATS’ multi-billion ringgit Senai Aviation & Airport City, a mixed development project to be developed over 10 years, would be the growth engine for the airport and the Senai area.
Sited on 1,133ha beside the airport, its residential, hospitality and commercial components cover 323.74ha while an air cargo logistics centre and a high-tech park occupy 404.68ha each.
The entire development is undertaken by SATS’ wholly-owned subsidiary, Enigma Harmoni Sdn Bhd, and SATS subsidiary Senai Hi-Tech Park Sdn Bhd (SHTP) will operate the park.
The Senai park is Malaysia’s second high technology industrial park after Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) in Kedah and the former is helmed by the former KHTP chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Shukri Tajudin. It is probably the first integrated hi-tech park in the world connected to the airport while similar parks like those in Dubai and Frankfurt are located a distance from the airport.
To date, SHTP has received RM1.7bil investment from China-based EQ Solar Technology International Sdn Bhd to produce solar modules and RM60mil from MOX-Linde Gases Sdn Bhd, an industrial gas provider.

SHAH FIRDAUS April 10th, 2010, 01:01 AM Only domestic passenger flights at Senai Airport
By Sim Bak Heng
Published: 2010/04/10
THE Sultan Ismail International Airport, also known as Senai International Airport, in Johor has ceased handling international flights.
This followed budget carrier AirAsia's decision to terminate its flights to Jakarta and Surabaya from Johor early this year. This has left the function of the airport as far as passenger traffic is concerned to merely a domestic one.
Senai Airport formerly operated direct flights to Indonesian cities such as Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya and Palembang as well as other Asian cities such as Bangkok and Macau.
However, many airlines including AirAsia have discontinued their international flight operations from the airport due to poor passenger volume.
Industry sources said if there is a revival of international flights, it will only be possible from 2012 onwards when several international class destinations such as the Legoland and the Kulaijaya Chelsea Premier Outlet open for business.
Johor Tourism and Domestic Trade Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang confirmed that international passenger flights out of Senai Airport have ceased.
"Airline operators have to cancel their flight service on commercial consideration," he told Business Times in an interview in Johor Baru.
However, the Johor state government is not sitting idle on the matter, more so when several new destinations in Singapore such as the Resorts World Sentosa and Universal Studio, which had just opened its doors recently, are seizing a large part of the tourist market.
"On our part, we have other ways to bring in foreign tourists directly to Johor such as through chartered flights.
"During the Chinese New Year period in February, there was one chartered flight from Kunming, China. We will intensify our tourism promotion activities to attract more chartered flights," Hoo said.
Currently, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly make stop-overs at the airport.
With declining flights, the travel industry is sceptical whether Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd's forecast to increase its passenger arrivals at Senai Airport from 1.6 million now to three million by 2014 will be met.
But Hoo is not worried by this.
He believes that Legoland and the Chelsea Premier outlet are able to bring in 1.4 million and 4 million tourists per year.
"The Senai-Wenzhou Trade Centre will also operate from 2012, which means a possibility of direct flights serving between Senai and Chinese cities as droves of investors and businessmen are expected to come to Johor," he said.
While waiting for 2012 to come, Hoo said the Johor state government is negotiating with Sri Wijaya Airlines from Indonesia to fly between Senai and Surabaya.
Senai Airport is undergoing a major development, costing RM93 million, which will turn it into a futuristic aviation hub. This includes a lifestyle shopping mall called the Aero Mall.

AERO Mall, the first stand-alone and external airport mall in Senai, Johor, currently under construction at Senai Airport, is scheduled to open by year-end.
Senai aeromall is nearly complete!!

ok lah in singapore no space for circuit training, end up sia choose to use senai as our circuit training for new type conversion. Quite ok lah, one of the reason we can use senai is because low traffic over there. singaporean always have the priority over other traffic especially over the poor flying school. One of the reason is that we are much faster, weighs heavier (pay according to the aircraft weight) and more professional. Well, that's the best senai can offer aviation wise, apart from the shopping complex.

SENAI: Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) is targeting to achieve more than RM10bil in sales from the take-up of land and properties in Senai Airport City integrated development project.
Chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Othman said the company had spent over RM350mil upgrading facilities at Senai Airport since November 2003.
These include a complete refurbishment of the airport passenger terminal complex, extending the runway to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft, parking facilities and integrated air cargo terminal.
SATS, took over the operations of the airport opened in June 1974 from Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd, it is the country's first and only privately owned and operated airport.
“The company will invest an additional RM2bil over the next 10 years on infrastructure and public amenities at the airport,'' Sidik said on Saturday.
He said this at the opening of the RM80mil Aero Mall - Malaysia's first stand-alone external airport shopping complex and the launch of the RM3.3bil Senai Airport City by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
At the event, SATS also signed two memorandums of understanding with South Korea's STX Corp and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
STX plans to invest RM1.5bil in Senai High Tech Park (SHTP) to produce solar cell modules while UTM will assist SHTP by providing expert consultation in various fields of its development plan.
Sidik said the integrated Senai Airport City project located next to Senai Airport spanning over 1,099 ha comprised three main components.
The residential, commercial and hospitality amenities are located on 264 ha, Free Zone Industrial and Logistics Park (FZIP) sits on 375ha and SHTP occupies 460ha.
“The hi-tech park will be partially operational in March next year and to date has received two investments of RM2.3bil,'' he said.
FZIP caters for the high-end manufacturing and technology-related industries in the aviation and logistics sectors and SHTP is the second hi-tech park in Malaysia after Kedah's Kulim Hi-Tech Park
Sidik said work on the hospitality precinct with two hotel blocks, a convention centre, offices and a factory outlet would start this year.
Also located at the precinct is the RM200mil regional wholesale centre to attract buyers from countries in the region - a joint venture project between SATS and Wenzhou Association of China.
“Senai Airport City will be the world's first integrated development project directly connected to an airport, whereas others are located several km away from the airport,'' said Sidik, adding that the project would take 10 years to complete.

nazrey June 26th, 2010, 07:25 AM Aero Mall to liven up Senai airport
By Sharen KaurPublished: 2010/06/26

Developments at the Senai International Airport in Johor are expected to accelerate following the set-up of the Aero Mall, a stand-alone and external airport mall.
"There are now RM2.5 billion worth of ongoing projects at the airport area," Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS) chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman told Business Times in an interview.
They include the RM2 billion Senai High Tech Park and the Free Zone Logistics and Aerospace Industrial Park.
Sidik said the Aero Mall, which will open on July 1, will set a new wave of development for SATS, which has 1,120ha surrounding the Senai airport.
The RM80 million, 173,338 sq ft mall is an integrated lifestyle complex adjoining the airport. It has 29 retail outlets and 30,000 sq ft piazza area. Some 70 per cent of the lots have been taken up for shopping, entertainment and dining facilities.
Sidik said that there are also plans for a cineplex and a digital complex.
"When we took over the airport in 2003, it was just a building to service passengers flying to Kuala Lumpur. We have expanded service to include flights to Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, and other facilities.
"Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia operate some 220 flights a week (out of the airport) and we hope that will be increased as we work to grow air traffic and passenger volume," Sidik said.
"Passenger traffic at the airport is now more than two million, including meeters and greeters. We expect this to double in the next three years."
Sidik expects new developments in Iskandar Malaysia in the state to contribute to the airport's growth.
Ongoing projects at Iskandar Malaysia include Legoland, premium factory outlets, universities and hospitals, targeted to be ready by 2012.
"Iskandar is expecting some four million visitors a year. We think this will increase air traffic and passenger volume. The airport can handle up to 4.5 million passengers a year before it requires any expansion."
On the Senai High Tech Park and the Free Zone Logistics, Sidik said that SATS might undertake a fund-raising exercise, in the form of internal funds and loans, to get the projects moving.
He is ambitious about both projects and is confident that they will attract investors.
The high-tech park has drawn interest from investors in the US, Europe and China who are in various sectors, including semiconductor and solar energy.
There are confirmed investments from China's EQ Solar Technology International Sdn Bhd, which will invest US$500 million (RM1.6 billion) to produce solar modules, and leading industrial gas provider MOX-Linde Gases Sdn Bhd, which plans to set up an industrial gas separation plant.
"We have incentives to attract investors. Those who come into the Iskandar region will enjoy low income tax, among other things," Sidik said.
Still, SATS may face stiff competion from Singapore, the KL International Airport and the Port Klang Free Zone, which are also aggressively attracting investors through various incentives.

nazrey December 9th, 2010, 08:48 PM Firefly to make Senai next hub?

Firefly looks set to use Johor's Senai Airport as the second hub for its jet planes and is eyeing regional destinations like Jakarta and Bandung in Indonesia.
Business Times learnt that Firefly has leased two Boeing 737-400 planes, and these will be positioned at Senai Airport.
It is not known if any of the Boeing 737-800 planes ordered by the airline will be joining the fleet of 737-400 jets at Senai.
It is understood, however, that Firefly is leasing the two planes on a short-term basis.
Sources said subject to traffic rights approval, Firefly aims to operate the jets from Senai by the first quarter of 2011 and is eyeing routes such as Bangkok, Jakarta, Bandung, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
"There is also great potential for other international airports like those in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Penang to serve as subsequent hubs for Firefly jets," one source said.
Making Senai Airport a hub may also help spur the airport and the Iskandar Malaysia region.
For Iskandar, it could help draw more investments as it means better connectivity for existing and potential investors.
The airport, meanwhile, can expect to be infused with a new lease of life, following many repeated attempts by other airlines which had previously introduced international and domestic flights.
These efforts had not taken off, resulting in an under capacity at the airport, which has recently been upgraded with a first of its kind Aeromall.
The airport is currently served by MAS, Firefly and low-cost carrier AirAsia.
Last month, Firefly announced that it will add 30 Boeing 737-800 to its fleet over the next five years, which will operate from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport's main terminal.
The airline will receive the initial six 737-800s next year, the first of which will ply the Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching routes from January 15 2011.
Firefly will receive seven more jets in 2012, another seven in 2013, five in 2014 and the last five in 2015.
The airline began operations in 2007 from the Penang International Airport with three Fokker F-50 planes, which were replaced a year later by turpo-propellers ATR-72-500 planes.
Sources said Firefly is not expected to exit the turbo-propeller operations which have been reportedly profitable, as it still has seven more authorised ATR 72-500s which are set to join its existing fleet of seven in a staggered manner from this month.

First of all there is no such conspiracy as all forumers here are not so focused to do so.
Secondly, there is no reason for JB to be targeted. I just think that you are a bit sensitive and overzealous in your defense. Just cool down and look at other perspective and it would be fine.
Thirdly, Klang Valley got the most criticism and fortunately/unfortunately no one bothers or realize.

rizalhakim February 23rd, 2011, 04:22 AM Senai to be Firefly's southern hub come May
By Presenna Nambiar
Published: 2011/02/23
FIREFLY'S second phase of expansion involves making largely ignored Senai International Airport in Johor Baru as its southern hub come May 2011.
Currently only Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and AirAsia service Senai airport.
The second prong of its plans will also see it setting up in Kota Kinabalu International Airport earlier than planned, to support its parent MAS' operations there.
Initial plans had only been for it to start operating an aircraft out of Kota Kinabalu airport in 2012.
This brings the total number of hubs to five, including Skypark Subang, Penang International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
"Yes, today Senai airport may not look very attractive, but we are looking at the long term. In five years, we think the place will blossom," Firefly managing director Datuk Eddy Leong told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
He said the fact that Senai airport is two and a half times cheaper than Changi Airport to operate in, mainly due to currency exchange, will also work to its benefit once the Iskandar region is in full swing.
Firefly will park two leased Boeing 737-400s in Senai airport for its operations there.
Leong said the plan was to operate B737-400s there until demand grows enough for it to start using B737-800s.
B737-400s are three and a half times cheaper to lease than B737-800s.
Its plans include starting international flights out of Senai to Indonesian destinations such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung in the third quarter of the year and to Bangkok, Thailand, in the fourth quarter.
It is currently trying to secure air rights to the destinations.
Currently, Senai airport does not offer international flights.
Firefly will start operations out of Senai airport with double daily flights to both Kuching and Kota Kinabalu in May and June respectively.

of Senai Airport, Shahrull Allam during the ceremony
JOHOR BHARU: FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd, a unit of Malaysia Airline System Bhd (MAS), will develop the Sultan Ismail International Airport as its southern hub in tandem with developments taking place at Iskandar Malaysia, the southern economic development corridor in Johor.
“The reason we are setting up a southern hub is because of Iskandar Malaysia. We actually wanted to establish a hub here back in 2007 but between then and 2011, many things happened like the sub-prime financial crisis.
“A lot of things have changed now but at that time it was not clear what the progress will be like at Iskandar Malaysia, but today, four years later, we can see the results of the planned developments,” said FireFly Managing Director Datuk Eddy Leong.
He was speaking to reporters after the joint unveiling of the community airline’s first Boeing 737-400 jet aircraft by MAS Chairman Tan Sri Dr Mohd Munir Abdul Majid, Iskandar Regional Development Authority Chief Executive Ismail Ibrahim and Senai Airports Sdn Bhd Deputy Chief Executive Officer Shahrull Allam here on Saturday.
The airline’s routes out of Johor will connect its Eastern hub in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and also Indonesia and neighboring countries in the region in the second-half of the year.
“The 737-400 will cater for our current development stage and after it surpasses this (stage), we will convert them to the larger capacity 737-800 aircraft,” he added.
At present, Firefly is leasing two 737-400 aircraft for less than five years while targetting to bring into service a total of 30 Boeing 737-800 aircraft between now and 2015.
Leong said the airport targeted an annual passenger traffic of 3.5 million the next two to three years and moving forward, aimed to handle five million passengers a year.
“The passenger traffic will only be from Firefly, but collectively, we will work with other airlines to bring passenger traffic to the airport.
“The hub will only be successful if there are many other airlines flying in to provide the much needed connectivity, in a sense, the more the merrier,” he said.

International flights to resume at Senai Airport

International flights are to resume from the Senai Airport in Johor after a lapse of almost a year.
Firefly Sdn Bhd, the low cost carrier, has confirmed that it will introduce its maiden flight to the Indonesian cities of Surabaya and Bandung on Aug 12 and Aug 16 respectively.
It will also fly to Bangkok, at the end of the year.
The Senai Airport used to be the southern hub of budget airline AirAsia's international operations, with flights to Macau, Bangkok and Jakarta until it halted the services in the middle of last year.
Sriwijaya, the Indonesia-based airline, also operated a flight to Surabaya from Senai but stopped doing so in August last year.
Since then, the Senai Airport has only catered to domestic flights but with Firefly's latest confirmation, the Johor state government’s efforts to turn it into an international destination, is picking up pace.
The Johor Tourism Department Director, Dr Shaari Mohd Nooh said that Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, is serious in wanting to make the Senai Airport its southern hub.
"Firefly will have two planes for the international flights and a set of crew permanently stationed here," he added.
He was speaking after launching the Johor Travel Fair 2011 at the Sutera Mall in Johor Baru on Friday.
Shaari also said that China Airlines is interested in flying to Senai from the southern city of Guangzhou and is now in talks with the Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation for landing rights.
"Many Chinese citizens apply for visas at the Malaysian Consulate in Guangzhou. So, it's natural, that they want to fly out from Guangzhou airport.
"Having more international flights into Senai Airport will only increase tourist arrivals into Johor," he added.--Bernama

Firefly will start flying to regional destinations this year from its southern hub in Johor Bahru (JB), commencing with the flights to two Indonesian cities.
Its managing director, Datuk Eddy Leong, said Firefly would commence operations to Surabaya and Bandung from August and to Bangkok in the fourth quarter of this year.
"These routes are already on sale and the load factor looks promising," he said in a statement in conjunction with the launch of its inaugural flight from JB to Kuching.
Firefly’s FY816 took off at 7.30am from Senai International Airport with a load of 70 per cent and touched down at Kuching International Airport at 8.55am while its load factor on its return flight was 75 per cent.
He said additional domestic flights had also been scheduled between JB and Langkawi as well as JB and Penang in conjunction with the school holidays in the second quarter of this year.
"Johor is a significant part of Firefly’s growth plan as our target market will now expand to mass passengers from the southern region, Singapore, Batam and transit passengers in Sabah and Sarawak," he said.
He said the southern hub routes would also increase accessibility for tourists and business travellers into the commercial development of Iskandar Malaysia.
To date, Firefly has flown 3.6 million passengers with a target to fly one million passengers from the southern hub by end-2012. -- Bernama

JOHOR BARU: Budget airline Firefly commenced its inaugural flight from Senai International Airport to Kuching in Sarawak recently.
The twice-daily flight departs from Johor Baru at 7.30am and 6.35pm respectively while the flights from Kuching to Johor Baru are timed at 9.55am and 8.30pm.
The Johor Bahru-Kuching flight marks Firefly’s inaugural route from its southern hub.
From June 16, the airline will commence a twice daily return flight from Johor Bahru to Kota Kinabalu and both East Malaysian routes will operate using the Boeing 737-400 with a seating capacity of 162.
Firefly will go regional from its southern hub in August with flights to Surabaya and Bandung in Indonesia.
The company’s managing director Datuk Eddie Leong said tickets were already for sale and by the end of the year, the airline would commence flights from Johor Baru to Bangkok, Thailand.
“The introduction of Firefly’s services underline our commitment to develop Johor Baru as our southern hub, offering Johoreans more travel choices and contribute significantly to the rapidly developing opportunities in commerce and tourism.
“Johor is a significant part of Firefly’s growth plan as our target market will now expand to mass passengers from the southern region, Singapore, Batam and transit passengers in East Malaysia,” he said.
Additional domestic flights have also been scheduled between Johor Baru and Langkawi as well as Johor Baru and Penang in conjunction with the school holidays in the second quarter of this year.
At Senai, flight FY816 took off at 7.30am with a 70% passenger load and touched down at Kuching International Airport at 8.55am.

“I am pleased to welcome passengers from Johor Baru to Kuching.
“At the same time, I also look forward to travel with Sarawakians to Johor Baru on Firefly’s return flight,” said Rashid.

JOHOR BARU: The state tourism department is trying to lure regional airlines from China to fly tourists to the state via chartered flights.
State Tourism and Domestic Trade committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said Shenzhen Airlines had indicated its interest to conduct chartered flights to Johor.
“I will talk to Senai Airport so that they continue giving special rates to such airlines in an effort to attract more tourists to the state.
“In fact, Senai already provides incentives such as free landing and parking for aircraft,” he told The Star after a recent trip to promote Johor at the 8th China-Asean Expo in Nanning.
Hoo added that many Chinese nationals were not aware about Johor and all its tourism products.
“Based on the good response from tour agents in China, I am sure they are now coming up with travel packages to Malaysia and Singapore,” he said.
Hoo said about 20% out of the 1.1 million Chinese visitors who visited the country annually travelled to Johor.
He added that the number of tourist arrivals had increased by more than 480,000 for the first six months of this year compared with the same period last year.
He said tremendous growth was expected as new tourism products including Legoland Malaysia and Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios were expected to be opened next year and in 2013.
Hoo also thanked Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman for a bigger budget for the department to carry out promotional activities overseas.
