How did YOU get started on Skyscraper City?

Just out of interest!

I remember (on the Downing Thread) Chris told us how and why he found this site . . .

yeah that's the one, an Ian Simpson design:

from skyscrapernews:
http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/1772GallowgateTower_pic2.jpg

I fell in love with that building, infact researching that building lead me to skyscrapernews, which led me to SSC, so I owe my SSC life to that building.

ME . . . I was looking for information on IMPERIAL QUAY (one of our 'favourite' Gap Sites, now featured on the GAP SITES thread) and back in 2006 "Skyscraper City" is what appeared in the search engine, and I have been here ever since!!

So, what about Y O U ??

Gatehead Quays Phase 2 was what led me here! I remember that a former place of employment, Fairhursts Design Group had done one of the shortlisted entries. They didn't win, and nothing happened there anyway!

Another member on the board who I know in person pointed out that people were commented on a building I'd had a large hand in designing... I stuck around ever since.

I bumped into Widcat45 on Northumberland Street as he was coming out of Greggs, a stottie sandwich in each of his hands - he told me about the site and to be honest I was surprised that I hadn't heard of it before

This site got a mention on the Photos of Newcastle's West End Facebook site. I popped in to have a look and thought that it was s good source of info. Watched it for a bit before I stepped in and did my first post! Now here practically every day

I was looking up some information on the Ouseburn gateway, found it and mentioned the site to a southerner several months later I was discussing some buildings with said southerner and he pointed something out on here and mentioned that he had joined the forum so i did too

So was I. I assumed you invented it on Tyneside and it spread to the rest of the world!

I came across it when looking up what was happening to the Central Bar in Gateshead. Spent most of the Christmas holidays on it taking everything in.

I was actually 'Googling' for some work I was involved with on a development in Liverpool when i found SSC. When I landed on the Liverpool forum I, out of curiosity and boredom (must've been a slow work day!), wondered if they had the same for Newcastle.....

EDIT: There wasnt, but there was a single Newcastle thread encompassing ALL projects and discussion...those were the days!

Cant remember exactly what brought me to this site in the first place as it has been such a long time since I joined up but I guess it was just a love of exploring urban areas and the buildings within them.

Yes, a lot of people do, as there is so much interesting info on here now. In fact I was talking about a similar thing with Adrian Small, on the "Admin Thread", only the other day . . .

Adrian,

The 'view numbers' figures are important, as they accurately reflect the popularity (or otherwise) of the forum (subject to the unique exceptions mentioned in point (3) above) more so than 'posts numbers', as at any given time about 95% of forum members are 'viewing' rather than posting.

Many forum members (and 'guests') never post at all, they only read (view) the forum. I remember one evening last year, a post on the Historic Newcastle thread (it was about a 1930s look around the old Evening Chronicle offices) caused the 'view figure' of the thread to increase, within 23 hours, by over 1,200 (a very large figure and way above average even for that thread) . . . but NONE of those 1,200 actually 'posted' a reply!

I originally posted on the old World Scrapers forum where there was just one page for the whole world, I guess around 2000 after I got a skyscraper book at an airport. Then when Euroscrapers was set on went on that and finally when UK Skyscrapercity was formed became a mod for the UK pages. Stopped being a mod when I went to uni in 2002 and since then have had periods where I've used the site everyday and others where I haven't been able to look at it for months as been too busy but nice to have a good catch-up then.

Remember the battle for ages to get a Newcastle page with the powers that be saying there wasn't enough development in Newcastle to make it a success but it's been far more than that, one of the busiest city pages on here now and definitely one of the most interesting thanks to the efforts of the people who post here, particularly NH who's contribution to this website is invaluable.

Thought I'd give you a brief history of SSC:

I first started posting as 'xapbpoh' on the old 'Euroscrapers' forum in 2002 (with IBEH, AKA Gosforth Dan), which after a lot of German/British rivalry split into separate forums. In addition, there was the 'world skyscrapers' forum, along with Dutch and Oz forums. You needed to register separately with each forum to post in it.

In the summer of 2002, Jan (SSC admin) started discussing the idea of having one big forum with separate areas for each country. In august, a few regular posters, including myself were invited to test out the new forum before it went live and create a few threads. I created two - a Newcastle project list and a Leeds project list. These were the first threads on the UK section of SSC and among the very first on the entire forum. Despite this claim to fame, the site unfortunately was hacked at some point and many threads were indiscriminately deleted, including the Newcastle update thread.

To be honest I was sceptical about the North-east subforum at first, but it's been a great success, thanks in no small part to Historian, but also because we've somehow avoided the trolling problems that have plagued other sub-forums.

It's incredible that in September next year, SSC will have existed for 10 years. During that time I have changed career twice, emigrated and returned to Britain twice (and nearly emigrated again) and moved to and away from the North east a whopping 11 times.

Adrian Swall if you please!
Mrs Swall (Adrienne) is most upset!

Anyway....I was looking for info on the new Newcastle Police Station on Forth Banks.

SSC is an interesting and addictive site with a lot of different opinions!

I am greatly interested in my own city and it's development which has been mismanaged over the decades.

Let's try and hold the decision makers to account in a small or (Swall) way.

Finally, thank you to the guys who put so much work into the administration of the site.

PS Are there any 'ladies' commenting on here?

Was always looking at skyscrapers on skyscraperpage for years. Then started to follow The Shard project in London and was seaching for information on the building and came up with this site. Was just reading for about a year on the site then signed up last year. Can send a few hours on the stadium pages alone.

I think I developed an interest in developments in the Newcastle area after university. I know I didn't really follow the Sage development, so it must have been after that.

My guess is the redevelopment of the brewery sparked my interest and through searching for info I probably stumbled across this forum.

My first post related to Haymarket metro back in 2007.

I read this forum a lot (at least once a day ) but only post occasionally. I dont work in architecture or civils, so I don't really have much to contribute. I like to post observations and comments mostly.

One final word, thanks a million to NH and also to bigchris for the effort to get the sub forum, then for all the effort NH puts in to make it a great reference/resource on the city.

NH, you have an unrivalled archive of information on this city. What do you plan to do with everything you have kept long term? I bet T&W archives would be interested.

A June 2009 London Evening Standard article http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/lifestyle/article-23846464-high-hopes-london-towers.do about current and future high rise buildings in London area which as a contruction professional filled a few minutes on a train journey to Laindon in Essex.

From that use of Google and "Skyscraper" and then onto this forum

After that a few cursory views of the site but since September 2011 have started to get involved and input text + photographs ( sometimes one of these is better than a 1000 words)

Doing my best to spread the word by passing SSC onto as many of my former colleagues as possible

My story is basically the same as IBEH, Talisker and Johnnypd and was a member of the previous forum.

I love how organised the forum has become and NH you're the greatest asset. Only thing that i liked about the old way, was that I actually looked more at what was happening in other cities due to their being just one main thread for each city.

I stumbled upon the skyscrapercity.com site while doing some research last year. I have always been interested in genealogy / family history, but recently decided to write up my own childhood in Newcastle for posterity. I need reminders of certain places / names/ shops etc and when typing in 'searches' I happened upon this site a number of times. Of course I became hooked, and spent hours and hours just browsing and now when I have spare time am often found perusing the North East pages.
Thank you forum members for posting such interesting information and for being so friendly :)

I can't remember what first drove me to SkyScraperCity, probably looking for some information on some tower that was going up (or coming down) or transport project in London as that was where I lived for a few years. I've been browsing the London and Transport boards for many years.

I came across the Newcastle section just before Christmas. I was looking for information on what the old Next unit was going to be which took me to Graham Soult's excellent blog and from there I noticed the link to this place. I spent many hours over Christmas browsing some of the lengthy and informative threads here.

For some inexplicable reason over the last few months I've suddenly become interested in the history of the places I know and there is some really fascinating knowledge and information amongst the regulars here.

As a West Country ex-pat who's lived on Tyneside for 23 years I was trying to find out about a development in my home town and the site came up in a search. Since then I've been drawn in by lots of different threads. Comparing the two areas over the years I've always been impressed by the way the North East goes ahead with things while Bristol always seems to dither and end up with nothing or at least gets things 30 years later!

BobbieW I would recommend a look on the hotels of Newcastle thread, theirs lot of different reviews and opinions on different places to stay which covers all types of hotels, from travellers bedsits to our finest hotels, it also covers different locations as well all of which suit everyone differently.

geordiebristolian, believe me when I say that Newcastle is just as bad as not getting things done, as you start to look through the threads you will see that it's quite a trend.

Thought I might as well tell my story since I've been posting a bit more rather than just browsing....

I found this site after trying to find out more info about the Victoria tunnel, my friend gave me a link to the Victoria tunnel/quayside branch thread, I spent ages reading it and was blown away by the knowledge of the people on here, in particular Steve Ellwood and NH. I've been hooked ever since!

I've had a passion for local history since I was a little girl and the more I find out the more I want to know. I'm really inquisitive and can't pass a building without wanting to know who put it there and why... I just want to know everything there is to know about Newcastle, and this site is a really good place to start!

Hi all just wanted to say hello. I discovered the forum a couple of months back while looking for pictures of old Newcastle, and I've been quietly devouring the excellent content ever since. It's truly remarkable the amount of effort everyone - and particularly certain key individuals - put into researching, photographing, and writing about this area. I'd like to add my thanks to you all for creating a throughly absorbing and useful resource.

I've lived, worked, shopped, and revelled in the Newcastle and Northumberland areas after to moving to Morpeth as a small boy in the mid-70s. Hopefully I may be able to chip in with the occasional question or observation.

Keep up the good work everyone and all the best to you all for 2013.

Thanks NH - couldn't find this thread so cheers for sorting it out.

Actually I think it may have been watching the demolition of the Dunston Rocket from my office window that spurred me to look for pictures of it in its <ahem> prime. I've got a bit of a thing for modernist/brutalist architecture so despite its clear unfitness-for-purpose I felt a slight tinge of sadness to see it go, as with the Get Carter car park, and even more so the Bank of England building.

First came across it when I was cabinet member for development and regeneration on the city council around 2005 when I "lurked" to see what kind of reaction there was to various city centre projects, particularly Discovery Qtr and the Brewery tall tower, but didn't post. :)

Latterly have moved into working in consultancy on regen schemes and planning apps, firstly for a sustainable urbanism company and subsequently a political and community stakeholder engagement consultancy, in which capacity I work with a lot of planners and developers in the North East and beyond. As such, am often aware of a lot of the issues at play on various schemes from council, community, and developer perspectives, but not always in a position to comment directly for professional reasons.

Hello people, haven't been on here for probably over a year - I found the site when I was researching the Mayfair as part of a music MA (thanks to everyone who provided me with information back then, very useful and much appreciated).

Reasons for not visiting since are various - other pieces of work took over, finshed degree and went travelling, forgot about it...

Anyway for some reason I must not have noticed this thread first time round, but now I have so thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm a musician (drummer & DJ), but also have a keen interest in urban planning and development - more the social/political side than the aesthetic/design aspects, but that side of it also figures in my interest. I'm reasonably new to it, it's an interest that developed out of stuff I did for the MA and things that I've thought about as a musician for some years but never bothered to follow up.

I've recently started a PhD which is going to be about music scenes and urban space in Newcastle. Seeing the Ouseburn developments mentioned in the Chronicle this week reminded me about this site, as I remembered how much information is on here, not to mention the collective knowledge of its members.

I've got a fair bit of catching up to do here but will be posting again soon - meantime if anyone else is involved with music scenes of any sort in NCL, or has any thoughts about music and its place in local development and culture, I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers for the time being,

Be very interested in seeing a copy of your MA thesis, is it published anywhere ?
It's not, but I can email it to you if you want. The Mayfair didn't actually figure in the final dissertation as I ran out of space. The final thing was about local band Venom and how aspects of the local environment and identity could have influenced their sound, which went on to inspire all the 'big' bands of that genre. If you're still interested let me know and I'll send it over.
Cheers

Hi everyone,

I'm new here; a long time lurker and first time poster and I thought that this is the best place to introduce myself.

I must admit that I actually live in Belfast but I spent my time at uni in Newcastle (please don't judge me). Anyway, while there I became fascinated by the city and I've enjoyed reading and learning so much more about it. I luckily broken away from the whole student thing very early and managed to see and feel a bit of the real Newcastle but I realise that there's so much that I missed.

Hopefully I can chip in with any opinions or outsider perceptions if that's of any use to you.

I'd read the forum for 2-3 years only recently signed up an account

I am not from Newcastle but lived within a 20 mile radius all my life

I now live in Gosforth not that NH agreed with me but we will never agree on that....... Great Park East (Warkworth and Melbury) are annexed from the future town and strategically linked to Great North Road within the city boundary and the only GP areas in NE3 so I win my argument.

Argh, I was walking back up from the quayside today and ended up peering through the windows of La Stalla. Memories came flooding back and I became a bit emotional. Why? Well I used to be a waiter there for a year or so (1987-88). This was a great time in my life and I spent my 18th birthday there. I remember most of the staff names. I was given the name Toni. My real name is Alan but there was already a couple of Alans there so Toni it was. Then it was Tono and eventually it was Tuna! So Tuna fish was my name! I even ended up dying my hair black to look the part! ha, ha.
So I searched for La Stalla and found this forum. Great to see the photos posted earlier in the thread. It really did stink of garlic but, believe me none of the staff could tell and I only realised how strong it was when I returned a few weeks after leaving.
The disco was great and I spent a nervous thursday night once behind the turntables.
What a shame. It was heartbreaking looking through the windows, remembering what went on.

Welcome Tuna

I'm relatively new here too even though I've browsed the forum for years. My name is an amalgamation of my two cats who both died last year Jazmin and Cleo. They loved Tuna lol. Cleo only ate it. She hated cat food and wouldn't touch it

Just re-discovered this thread!

So, c'mon all you new members, tell us your stories?

:)

I was searching for old photos of Noble street / Glue terrace. The buildings and the area are lost in time, but remain in the memory. Having lived in many parts of Newcastle and moving away from the area 20 years ago, my guilty pleasure on a rainy day off is to search through other people's wonderful photographs!

Hi I'm Scott. I have been reading posts on the forum for a few months, after a search link led me to the Ouseburn Developments thread when looking for information on the upcoming Malings development.

I recently started getting involved on the forum when I realised I had a link to share on the Central Station redevelopment thread.

I am interested in developments around the city centre and quayside, especially things related to transport.

G'Day. I'm Pete, originally from West Boldon now living in New Zealand for almost 30 years.
I came to the forum looking for an answer to the whereabouts of the Turk's Head Vaults (also known as the Back Turk's) and got an answer almost immediately. Then I discovered there was a lot more to the forum and got hooked...

Hi.
I`m originally from Gateshead but moved to Cyprus nearly 7 years ago. I found this site when I heard about building on green belt land and googled something or other and arrived here.
I`ve been skulking about here for months and months but never registered.
I don`t know what I find so addictive about the site ... but I just don`t seem to be able to help myself ;o)

[QUOTE=Newcastle Historian;104185592]Welcome to the forum
. . .

We have an "Introductions Thread" if you feel like telling us how you found this website, and perhaps a bit about yourself.

. . .

Introduction Thread . .
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1398562
--------------------------------------------------

My introduction to skyscraper city is a complex story and probably unusual. However I have a strong interest in the North East as those of you who have looked at my photographs will have realised.
http://www.peterloud.co.uk/photos/

A few months ago someone started impersonating me on internet. This person sent me threatening emails and set up a couple of Flickr webpages using my name and photos of mine that had been ripped-off from my website.

As an ex-IT guy I didn't find it difficult use internet forensics to find out that this was not someone who lived in UK who was about to visit me "tooled-up" as he said. It was from a guy who was around 67 year old, had lived in Newcastle, probably an artist of some sort, who was hanging around Chang Mai, Thailand. I soon found out that he was called Chris Robinson, but he uses a considerable number of false names and misleading email addresses. I reported this to the police and have amassed a considerable amount of evidence, so do not think that I am a nutcase, or being flippant.

Anyhow, after I had his Flickr webpages closed down things went quiet for a couple of months. Then a few days ago he started up again. He setup a WordPress blog with the title "Pete Loud Photos" using photos ripped off from my website, especially photos from Tyneside. I also received some emails which were extremely offensive and threatening. I had the webpage closed down within 24 hours. This must have upset him greatly because his emails after that became even more offensive, and when I say offensive I mean OFFENSIVE!.

Then yesterday I suddenly found that I was getting hundreds, perhaps thousands of accesses to my Newcastle photo webpages. I assumed that this was something to do with Robinson. Most accesses came from a link from Facebook, but quite a few from skyscrapercity - Newcastle.

So I was interested to find out if the link in skyscrapercity was a secondary link from someone who has seen the Facebook link, which I couldn't find. Perhaps Al Reetson could solve that problem.

A few of you might think that that is a bit personal. I promise you that what I have said is correct and I could prove every aspect of what I have said. Not only that I could give you many more nasty details. I am a very straight 66 year old guy who has worked for UNHCR, the EC, Government of Bahamas, World Bank and similar. I am not a crazy nutter.
http://www.peterloud.co.uk/ploud/

I no longer live in the North East but love to get back up there with my camera. I also have an interest in North Eastern culture and publish a book of Northumbrian & Tyneside fiddle tunes.

What an introduction ;-)

Sorry to hear about your problems. I saw your pics on Facebook and thought they'd be perfect for sharing on here. But rather than just nick them, as some do on Facebook, I put a link to your site so you'd get credit for them. They are very good.

It's possible the person who first posted them there came across them quite innocently, I have a lot of friends who post photographs of Newcastle. But you've every right to be suspicious, given what he's done to you. He sounds a right freak.

Thanks for the reply. Where did you see them on Facebook? I couldn't find the link. I need to get the images removed as Facebook claim the right to do whatever they want with any photos on Facebook. Some of my images have more commercial value than you might expect.

This nutter has done similar things to other people.

I solved the puzzle of the visitors from Facebook. It was not part of the dirty tricks campaign against me. It was a straight forward link to my photos from the Facebook group, "Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the Past".

Thanks for the help.
