Land value in Kigamboni side will shoot up like madness

I wouldn't be surprised if it shoots up even before the bridge is built (speculative buyers).

So we now have two major planned suspension bridges in the region. This one and another proposed for Jinja, Uganda.

Plans for the construction of the long awaited 680 metre Kigamboni Bridge that will connect Dar es Salaam to the Kigamboni peninsula are underway.

The bridge will be built by the government of Tanzania in partnership with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). The project will include construction of two reinforced concrete pylons of a cable stayed bridge with a center span of 250 metres and a total bridge length of 180 metres as well as installation of wax coated stay cables including anchorages.

The Kigamboni Bridge aims at tapping the vast resources and opportunities currently non-utilized due to poor means of transport across the creek. After completion, the bridge will be operated as a toll bridge during the concession period expected to last for 25 years.

Bidders interested in constructing the Kigamboni Bridge yesterday convened at the Benjamin William Mkapa Towers for a pre-bid meeting.

Seven bidders who were short listed following a recent tender announcement saw a structural presentation by the project’s designers M/s Arab Consulting Engineers….

After seeing the design of the bridge which was presented by Mr. Mohamed Shohayeb from Arab Consulting Engineers, the bidders traveled to the actual site of the bridge to form their own opinion on the work.

This, the Director of Planning, Investments and Projects Mr. Yacoub Kidula said, would be followed by a question and answer session, in which the bidders would seek clarification or pose questions on various raised issues.

The 16th November 2011 exercise culminated in the bidders forming their opinion and setting upon making their final cost estimates for submission as quotes or bids.

The final date for submission of tender documents has been set on 15 December 2011, on which the bids would be publicly opened and the winner announced.

Contract for the construction of the long awaited Kigamboni Bridge is scheduled to be signed on Monday between the government, NSSF and the contractor who won the tender.

The construction cost is estimated at 100bn/- with the government bearing 40 percent while the remaining 60 percent will be borne by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Construction is expected to take four years
In an interview with the Guardian yesterday, Ministry of Works Public Relations Officer, Martin Ntemo said the process of picking a competent contractor had delayed implementation of the project.

He explained that there were six companies which had shown interest to enter into a joint venture in constructing the bridge.

According to him, the government had to ensure that a qualified contractor was chosen so that the project is implemented at required standards.

He refuted public claims that the delay was due to fear of losing revenues currently generated from the ferry services.

“The contractor has been ordered to ensure it is completed by 2015”, he said.

Ntemo said the 600-meter bridge will serve as the main means of crossing the creek for residents of Kigamboni, Temeke district to reduce traffic at the ferry.

He said already NSSF has set aside a total of 100bn/- for the construction of the bridge.

Meanwhile NSSF Director of Planning Investment and Projects Yacoub Kidula confirmed the selection of the contractor, saying everything was ready for implementation.

“Too many companies applied for the job. We had to carefully scrutinise them to get the best,” said Kidula adding that more details will be given on Monday during the contract signing ceremony.
Last year, the Parliamentary Committee on Community Development called on the government to speed up construction of the Kigamboni Bridge, saying the issue has taken too long.

During his visit at Kurasini-Vijibweni area in March last year, Works Minister John Magufuli directed NSSF to speed up construction of the bridge to facilitate easy crossing for Kigamboni dwellers.

I see no reason for cynicism about the Kigamboni Project. The project will take place and the current bridge (just about to be built) will have a multiplier effect to the economy of this area. The socond will come sooner that the first I hope. After all, we are gaining experience in carrying out large scale projects and this area remember is by the sea side and can easily attract investment! Only bad politics can derail this project and not its economic viability.

it got an excellent design :) probably better than most in east africa :)

i am always really interested in bridges, specially to bridges in east africa. bridges are very important, they lead to great development specially in African nations.

i have done some research into bridges in east africa, i found out that the longest bridge in ethiopia is 329m and i guess its still under construction :P , thats less than halve the length of Mpata bridge which is 750m long. the longest bridges in Kenya and Uganda don't exceed the length of 600m. so Tanzania is in front of its northern neighbours in bridges.

Salam wakuu.Naomba Ushauri.
