After many years of discussions and the relocation of the cities airport north of the city before the 2010 World Cup, a decision has finally been reached on the development of a dug out second port for the city. At R50 billion ($7.4 billion/E5.1 billion) for the first phase, it is going to be a massive undertaking, but very important for trade/transhipment growth in Durban.

Cape Town - Transnet plans to spend R50bn on the first phase of constructing a 'dig out' port on the site of the old Durban airport, group CEO of the parastatal, Brian Molefe said today.

The port would be equipped with 16 container berths built in four phases as well as five automotive berths and four bulk liquid berths in future phases. (Total of 25 berths)

Mr Molefe told parliament’s public enterprises committee that the first phase would consist of the construction of four container berths creating 2,4 million TEUs annually. Ultimately the container capacity at the dig out port will be 9,3-million TEUs.

"The cost for the first phase is in the region of R50bn which provides the platform for future expansion,' Mr Molefe said.

Transnet plans to spend R110,6bn on infrastructure in the next five years.

Here are some larger images of the current airport site and how it may look after the dug out is complete. Total investment for the completion after 4 phases is currently estimated at R160 billion ($23.3 billion)

I haven't seen a lot of harbours, and i just thought that i once would like in the Maritime subforum, but i looks pretty neet! I like the way its structured, and the fact is placed inside from the coast. Maybe its standard, but i like it!

Apparently a tender has been put out for today for the digout port, possibly design and build. Anyone heard about this?
