View Full Version : Yonge & Gerrard??
KGB October 4th, 2004, 12:54 AM That parking lot at College Park (north-west corner) is obviously getting something...and there is a planning department board showing something is in the works...but it doesn't give any details...just that it is changing the density or something.
I'm guessing it will have to wait for the Res of CP buildings to be sold out.
So...anyone have info on this site?
KGB
Homer J. Simpson October 4th, 2004, 01:07 AM I don't think it is anything special. Fences were up labour day weekend.
To my eye it didn't look like anything larger than a midrise could be built there.
KGB October 4th, 2004, 01:26 AM You sure we are talking about the same site?
KGB
Homer J. Simpson October 4th, 2004, 02:23 AM Sorry, I think that we are not. I must have misread what you said.
Was it on the south side of Carlton just east of Yonge?
KGB October 4th, 2004, 02:47 AM The big parking lot right on the north-west corner of the intersection of Yonge & Gerrard....part of College Park.
KGB
Mr Man October 4th, 2004, 04:25 AM It's for a ~60,000 sq metre condo.
KGB October 4th, 2004, 04:59 AM Is that in one...or two towers?
KGB
Mr Man October 4th, 2004, 05:03 AM No clue, the planning report was ridiculesly vague.
Mike in TO October 4th, 2004, 06:21 PM Was it on the south side of Carlton just east of Yonge?
That is the site for the "Met" - 43 storey tower that looks similar to HVE with a rounded turret at the northeast corner. A second tower that is slightly shorter is also planned for the site.
TheAlmightyFuzz October 4th, 2004, 11:16 PM ^
Nope, the Met is 21 Carlton which is on Carlton and east of Yonge.
Mr Man October 5th, 2004, 03:31 AM ?? We're talking about the northwest corner of Yonge and Gerrard. South of College Park.
Ed007Toronto October 5th, 2004, 06:50 AM This thread might as well be about the Tower of Babel.
agrigentum October 5th, 2004, 07:27 AM That was a potential site for the Ryerson School of Business

This made me laugh pretty hard.
victoryman October 5th, 2004, 06:45 PM the development of this corner is essential to cleaning up the roving youth problems in this area. it's an unsavory place to walk through and to think it's just a few blocks from time's square...er, dundas square. i know that street youth is a problem that needs to be addressed but if we're trying to impress tourists, it's time fix up the Yonge St from Dundas all the way up to Charles. unless we're looking for the tourists to say "oooh, honey, canadian street scum. get out the camera."
SHORTY October 6th, 2004, 01:41 PM Street scum are people too!
KGB October 6th, 2004, 07:59 PM Youth have been hanging out on that stretch of Yonge for generations....and I assume it will draw them for generations to come. Not to mention the Evergreen mission across the street, which draws a lot of them. I never noticed that part of the intersection as a hangout for youth and more than any other part of the Strip. I do notice a lot of street vendors though...maybe people mull around there because it's a street meat stop?
I don't think a condo on the parking lot is going to change the demographic nature of Yonge St much....but it will get rid of the last remaining parking lot fronting Yonge though.
KGB
salvius October 6th, 2004, 08:02 PM Amen to that. Parking lots scream underdevelopment.
alex h1 October 6th, 2004, 09:41 PM The "roving youth problem" is one of Yonge's most endearing qualities.

I guess the Dundas Square area redevelopment was a mistake then, we should have just kept the seedy youth hangouts that were there before.
Mike in TO October 7th, 2004, 04:16 PM it's time fix up the Yonge St from Dundas all the way up to Charles
That's the best strech of road in the city. I love the 'urban grit' that Yonge has - especially from Alexandra to Charles.
victoryman October 7th, 2004, 09:19 PM "urban grit" must be another term for "hey, you gotta quarter" and "hey, you lookin' to score?". believe me, when i first moved into the area (which i still live in, btw), i thought i enjoyed "urban grit", too. in the end, you get sick and tired of being hassled every few steps and belittled by large groups of, let's just call them what they are, crackheads. try walking past the south half-wall of the big green parking lot that's located between wellesley and maitland just after sunset for a couple of nights. you'll get pretty sick and tired of the "urban grit", too. i wish i didn't feel that way, really i do. i realize that these people need help - as in proper government assistance to change their lives - but a quarter only gets them that much closer to their next score. i'm hopeful that the massive developments slated for the area - rocp and murano and 22 and the St. John building (46 wellesley) moves them out. i can't wait for the people of fixed address to move out those with no fixed address.

Move.
Mike in TO October 7th, 2004, 10:58 PM I live in the area, have been there a while and I love it.
I agree with the above statement if you don't like it leave - I worry that with all the new development that the area will lose it's flavour.
There is more to Yonge than the beggars and drug addicts.
Are Be October 8th, 2004, 12:45 AM ... Provided you are north of Bloor.
But, hey, so we have our piss-panted urban grit- and that's ok. I simply avoid Yonge south of Bloor.
