On the other hand Mexicana is in the process to get clearance from the Chinese government to operate flights into China. In the mean time Aeromexico is doing market studies to find out whether it would be profitable to operate flights into China that would depart from either Tijuana or Guadalajara. So it is hardly a surprise that they are looking for a haven, a place where there is less competition and higher fares, a place where customers value--and are willing to pay for--the amenities old-line carriers offer, such as a plush first-class seat and a glass of champagne. For United Airlines and longtime rivals such as American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, that place is Europe or Asia or Latin America. In short, anywhere but here. "You want to get out of harm's way," said Jon Ash, president of aviation consulting firm InterVistas-ga2. "And harm is Southwest, JetBlue and AirTran." United's announcement last week that it was expanding its international operations by 14 percent met with almost universal approval from industry experts. In one of its most major strategic redirections since filing for bankruptcy protection in late 2002, United will add capacity in Asia, expanding flights to China and initiating service to an economically resurgent Vietnam. It also will use its discount carrier, Ted, to expand flights to Mexico and the Caribbean. The goal: to ratchet up profitable international operations to more than 40 percent of United's available seat capacity by March. That number currently is 35 percent. The strategy makes sense, airline experts say, because discount carriers, by and large, don't cross the oceans. In Europe and Asia, governments long have resisted complete deregulation of fares in order to protect the turf of their national carriers. Even as fare structures have loosened, many premier foreign carriers, such as British Airways and Air France, have chosen to compete largely on service, not price. In Asia, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific also have relied on pampering by flight attendants and delicious meals to keep their seats supplied with well-heeled travelers. Outside the U.S., "the supply-demand balance is better, so the pricing is better," said Ash. "If you're going from Columbus [Ohio] to Chicago to [London's] Heathrow, you're going to pay." How far can United go in shifting capacity overseas? Can it become a sort of new millennium version of Pan American Airways, the storied carrier that got its start delivering U.S. mail to the Caribbean and Latin America? The short answer is no. For decades, Pan Am was the first choice of many Americans affluent enough to travel abroad. Its fleet of wide-body 747 Boeing jets took off from a handful of so-called gateway airports, such as New York's John F. Kennedy and San Francisco, after collecting passengers ferried there by a host of domestic airlines. But airline deregulation in the late 1970s allowed international flights to take off from more U.S. cities. It wasn't long before domestic carriers launched their own international flights, siphoning passengers away from Pan Am and starting a long decline for the carrier that ended with its liquidation in the early 1990s. What did in Pan Am was a lack of a domestic system to collect passengers for international flights, said Michael Boyd, an airline consultant in Evergreen, Colo. And that's why United can't afford to move too many assets away from its domestic network, he said. "No one is going back to the days of Pan Am. It cannot work. You have to have local domestic feed," Boyd said. United may be able to shift as much as 50 percent of its mainline capacity to overseas flying, but that's a little deceiving, said Ash. As part of the overseas emphasis, United is outsourcing more of its domestic routes to independent regional carriers that fly under the United Express banner. Delta is taking a similar tack and is out in front in moving a larger share of its capacity to international travel, said Robert Mann, an airline consultant based in Port Washington, N.Y. Delta has been shifting much of its domestic business to connection carriers, such as ASA and Comair, both Delta subsidiaries, Mann said. More than half of Delta's domestic departures are flown by such carriers. "That's kind of a secret fact," he said, "but it's a bombshell." As United's and Delta's mainline operations shrink, that makes international a bigger percentage, even if new flights aren't added. Eventually, though, there's a point of diminishing returns, experts say. "At some point, you take yourself out of play because you don't have enough feed left," Ash said. Discounter threat Even as United and others place their bets overseas, there's no guarantee that discount carriers won't spring up to challenge those routes, too, industry experts say. It's happened before. Sir Freddie Laker, a feisty Brit, launched no-frills discount service between London and New York in the late 1970s. Laker Airways' Skytrain service was very popular, despite the fact that passengers were required to buy tickets the day they traveled and pay extra for meals. But overexpansion and fare-matching by traditional carriers on both sides of the Atlantic put Laker out of business by 1982. Some international discount carriers, such as Ryanair in Great Britain and Air Deccan in India, have sprung up, but at this point they are small and mostly stay within a region. United and other carriers probably have years before discount competition starts to seriously cramp profitability on international routes, industry experts predict. Until then, United is well positioned to capitalize on its international strengths. Today, United carries the most passengers between U.S. and Asia of any airline in the world, having built on the lucrative Asian route system it purchased from cash-strapped Pan Am in 1986 for $750 million. United also has Pan Am to thank for its prized London routes, which it purchased four years later. Only two U.S. carriers are allowed to fly directly to London's Heathrow Airport: United and American, which purchased its routes from distressed TWA. The combination of access to Heathrow and Beijing make United unique among U.S. airlines that fly internationally, industry experts say. "Basically, United is in the top two in the two most important markets," said Dave Emerson, an airline expert with consultant Bain & Co. In Asia, "Japan is currently the most important market, but you could argue China is on the horizon to be as important to Japan," Emerson said. That gives United an advantage that only Northwest Airlines can match. They are the only two U.S.-based carriers with permission to fly directly to Beijing and Shanghai. That's a position the airlines won't hold forever. China expansion This summer, the United States and China reached an agreement that allows additional carriers to serve each nation and could boost the total number of flights between the countries fivefold. The agreement allows United to expand service to Shanghai this month, and the airline has applied for permission to begin serving Guangzhou, a city in southern China. But rival carriers also are planning moves into China. Continental Airlines, Delta and Hawaiian Airlines are among those that have applied for routes. Other international expansion also is under way. Houston-based Continental, for example, announced last week that it will begin offering daily non-stop service between Newark's Liberty International Airport and Belfast. US Airways, struggling to emerge from its second bankruptcy in two years, has been expanding flights to the Caribbean. Establishing a market presence in a new country and establishing an image and distribution network takes time, consultants say, and United has a big head start in Asia. That region is critical to the company's recovery, said Emerson. "The ability to grow, protect that franchise and extend it from Japan to China is really, long term, a critical strategic piece of the puzzle for them," he said. - - - International flavor By March 2005, United Airlines plans to decrease the number of its domestic flights and increase its international flights--a move the carrier expects will improve its bottom line. Nephasto November 4th, 2004, 03:30 AM I emailed JustPlanes the following question: On the A380 order list at the bottom of the main page you don't list the order by the International Lease Finance Corp. (ILFC) of ten planes. They replied: Please note our list contains Airline orders... That does not include leasing companies. If/when an airline places an order from ILFC, it will appear in the listing. I did the same this afternoon, and they answered me the same. So, there are 144 A380 orders by now. Nick in Atlanta November 4th, 2004, 05:30 AM @Nephasto: I personally would count the ten planes that ILFC ordered, because it shows what the worldwide demand is for the A380 more accurately. I mean we have to assume that ILFC are not idiots and believe that they will have buyers or lessors for the ten planes. The airline will initially have flights to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Manila, Pattaya, Jakarta, and Surabaya. It plans to open up more routes early next year. Jetstar did not give any price details, or say exactly when it will start flying in December. Those details, it says, will be out in the next two weeks. Jetstar had said previously that it wants to differentiate itself by flying further than its competitors in this region to make up for its late entry into the market. Two other Singapore-based budget airlines, Valuair and Tiger Airways, now fly to a number of Asia-Pacific cities, including Bangkok, Hong Kong, Perth and Jakarta -- but not to mainland China, Taiwan or the Philippines. The Malaysian no-frills carrier, AirAsia, also flies between Bangkok and Singapore but is not based in the city-state. Jetstar is 49 percent owned by Australia's Qantas Airways. The airline has benefited from picking up business from travellers going between Asia and South America, especially the Japan-Brazil and Japan-Peru flights, via airports in Toronto and Vancouver. The new route between Toronto and the South Korean capital of Seoul will begin July 1 and will be offered three times a week using 282-seat Airbus A340-300 aircraft. Air Canada will continue its daily flights from Vancouver to Seoul. The U.S. government, as part of beefed-up security since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, toughened visa requirements for "transit passengers" landing in the United States and then changing planes en route to other global destinations. "Air Canada offers international travellers between Asia and South America the added convenience of avoiding U.S. transit visa requirements," Air Canada planning vice-president Ben Smith said in a statement yesterday. The carrier saw its traffic soar last year on international routes as many foreigners opted for lower airport congestion and less red tape in Canada compared with the United States. Montreal-based Air Canada already operates daily non-stop flights starting at Toronto's Pearson International Airport to Delhi, Hong Kong and Tokyo. From Vancouver, the airline also offers daily non-stop flights to Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Beijing and Shanghai. In adding international destinations, Air Canada is seeking to promote Canada as a gateway to Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, said Triant Flouris, a business professor at Concordia University. samsonyuen March 23rd, 2005, 06:29 PM Suprising Aeroflot doesn't fly more to the US. The U.S. Transportation Department approved Delta's application last month to start Atlanta-Moscow flights to launch daily service June 1, dropping to four flights a week between October and April. EMAIL THIS PRINT THIS MOST POPULAR Delta plans to use extended-range Boeing 767s carrying up to 204 passengers. "This is probably our most significant international initiative to Europe this year," said Delta marketing chief Paul Matsen. "If you look around the landscape today, Delta flies to every major business market in Europe." Delta has been the only U.S. carrier flying to Russia since it inherited New York-Moscow flights from Pan Am in 1991. American, Northwest and United sell seats on flights by European partners. Matsen said the New York flights to Moscow have been "consistently profitable." The direct link to Atlanta will offer more connections in the U.S. for Russian travelers, and a quicker route to Russia's oil industry for many American business travelers, he said. "We expect this service to do well," he said, projecting about 27,000 passengers annually originating through Atlanta. Delta, whose latest turnaround plan includes beefed-up international service, recently lost out to American and Continental for DOT approval to launch flights to China. Continental is likewise seeking to begin flights between its Newark, N.J., hub and Russia. Tuesday, Delta listed a round-trip price of $1,292 for the first non-stop flights to Russia, at least $75 lower than one-stop flights on competitors Air France, Alitalia and Lufthansa.
