Amazing, it has to be the color (International Orange) which make it so attractive to the human eye.

March 6th, 2005, 09:51 AM
I agree the color really makes it that much better. Hope they never attempt to change it for some odd reason.

And it has good history. They built it during the great depression when they lacked funds AND they were already building the bay bridge AND the area they built it in has high speed winds and strong ocean currents. Not only that but the engineer brought innovations with the bridge like the hard hat.

The US Coast Gaurds wanted the Golden Gate Bridge to be painted yellow and black stripes for better visability during foggy days, thank God that never happened. Here's more wonderful pictures of the bridge taken by Robert Campbell.

The best way to tour Golden Gate Bridge is by bicycle. Walking the entire length is too much of a physical work out, by the time you reach the other side of the strait, you simply don't want to repeat it again, however bus service on the north shore is extremely inconvenient, don't expect some one will come and pick you up right way. If you drive through the bridge, then you are certainly going to miss the most beatiful part of the San Francisco Bay. So my advice, Since all Muni buses carry bicycle racks, take advantage of that, ride Muni routes 28 or 29 which can bring you diretly to the south toll booth, then cruise the bridge on your bicycle, you will be saved from strenuous exercises while enjoying a spetacular scenery.

To add to that.... the only thing I dont like about the bridge is the lighting scheme at night. I think the Bay Bridge looks so much better at night.... the Golden Gate needs some more lights up it and along the span to bring out its colour at night.

It's the bridge to end all bridges... And speaking of ends, it'a also the bridge from which to end one's life. More people have taken the plunge from this bridge than from any other bridge in the world. I watched a chilling documentary on this topic and was shocked to learn that the sole survivor of one of those plunges, was a co-worker of mine...

Lawsuit filed over seismic work at Golden Gate Bridge
23 October 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A lawsuit alleges seismic work done five years ago on the Golden Gate Bridge will have to be redone and could cost more than $3 million to fix.

Golden Gate Bridge district officials, who filed the suit, say the bridge is safe, but part of it could get beat up in a big earthquake.

They're suing the partnership responsible for the work's design.

Workers have made temporary repairs to a 20-foot section on the north side of the bridge. The district alleges the design doesn't allow the section to bend the way it should in a large quake.

A call to T.Y. Lin International/Imbsen and Association Inc. Joint Venture was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Glad, I actually think that's a beautiful photo. Even when you don't get the picture that you want, it still turns out awesome. This is my favorite thing in the world, I was at it last week. There is nothing more beautiful than this bridge, at least to me. I've never taken a bad picture of it, maybe blurry or unclear ones, but it's always fantastic. I guess it just depends on what your opinion is.

Come to the bridge on 12 July at noon -- we are having a Laborfest Bridge walk to articulate the work by Bethlehem Steel at Pottstown and Trenton in fabbing this bridge, the load out at Philadelphia, and the arrival at site "just in time" --come to the construction office at Fort Point and hear about the erection rigging by McClintic Marshall -meet ironworkers who maintain the bridge today --and of course we will be honoring Strauss --and also talking about the upcoming Doyle Drive and Phase 3a and 3b projects

Is it under construction or completed one

Well, obviously it's been open since the 1930's but it always undergoing maintenance. In fact it is always being repainted because as soon as they finish on one end they immediately have to start over at the other. In addition to that the moist salty air leads to corrosion so they are constantly replacing parts of the bridge.

June 30th, 2009, 09:25 AM
With the arrival by barge of the sections of SFOBB, we should remember that GG Bridge was fabbed in Pennsylvania and in Trenton in Bethlehem shops, then loaded out in Philadelphia and shipped to site through the Panama Canal --upcoming Projects 3a north anchorage and 3b main span are very ambitious retrofits

(Thread Bump)

The Golden Gate bridge is currently undergoing a seismic retrofit costing $392 million.

And Doyle Drive, the south access road to the Golden Gate Bridge, is structurally and seismically deficient and is in the process of being replaced with a new safer roadway. Work on that will be completed in 2013.

Next year will be the 75th anniversary of the Bridge, events are being held each month leading up to the main celebration

http://www.goldengatebridge75.org/

as for the upgrades to the freeway sections off the Bridge, those were PWA / WPA projects constructed separately in the '30s ---they are in need of retrofit, both structural and seismic
