View Full Version : GÖTEBORG | Centrala Älvstaden Megathread
dj4life June 17th, 2011, 06:51 PM Älvstaden/River city is a large sustainable project to be developed in the central area of Gothenburg (the second largest city in Sweden). The main task of this project is to develop a new and exciting city center of Gothenburg by urbanising and converting the harbour area into dynamic and livable public space where the industrial hystory might meet the high-technology future of the city.
Considerable development is already in progress and it is already built up in large parts (namelly: the Southern (Södra) and Northern (Norra) parts of 'Älvstaden'; please, see the map below). However the most exciting and the largest part of the project is set to be 'Centrala Älvstaden'.
In order to achieve a strategic grasp and a shared view of the development that will take place, a vision and a strategy are being prepared.
Vision and strategies
The mandate concerning the development of RiverCity Gothenburg derives from the City Executive Board and includes:
Vision and strategy seen from perspective of the city as a whole, based on working out an approach to the social, ecological and economic dimensions of the challenge;
Dialogue, characterised by openness with the community of Göteborg;
Active contribution to a national and international exchange of experience;
A symbol for interdisciplinary interaction and collaboration.
The work of drawing up a vision and strategy takes place partly through Citizens’ Dialogues and through workshops.
Ideas from around the world - RiverCity becomes arena for International Workshop
The results from the Workshop will play a key role in developing and expanding the city’s central area to embrace both sides of the river. Those wishing to participate have 40 days to put together a team and appropriate material that will enable assessment of the teams hoping to attend the Workshop. In April, the assessment group starts work on selecting the participating teams. It is expected there will be a total of about 100 contributors at the Workshop which takes place during the period 7-11 June.

dj4life June 17th, 2011, 08:23 PM Probably, the best known proposal till now is 'Viking Green City' which has been created and presented to the public earlier by the Swedish architect Håkan Cullberg. The architect sees the center of the city of Gothenburg as a dynamic space where a cluster of differently sized buildings is formed. The main symbol of a new city center may be a new 'Viking museum', which would be placed on a platform on the water. The project in short:
Country: Sweden;
Place: Göteborg (Gothenburg), Frihamnen;
Name of the project: 'Viking green city';
Architect: Håkan Cullberg;
Purpose: the conversion of the harbour area Frihamnen; a formation of a new, diverse, city center of Gothenburg as a part of the large sustainable development 'Älvstaden';
Internals: the average height of the buildings would be 200 m. (according to a primary suggestion); all the buildings are supposed to be environment-friendly;
Status: vision (proposed);
Price: -;
Begining of contruction: -;
End of construction: -;
More information: www.cullberg.se, www.vikinggreen.se.
There are two versions of the proposal:
1) a primary proposal with the normal height of the buildings:

gluten June 17th, 2011, 10:15 PM Finally :)
Let's hope for the first proposal which looks amazing, at least when it comes to heights and density.
But the other proposal looks good too, so I'm glad if just Vikingstaden gets build.

Well, the other proposals haven't been presented yet (or maybe i just didn't notice them?). Let's hope that the international projects will be interesting, aswell. :)
Of course, it would be great, if the the primary proposal of the 'Viking Green City' was built.
dj4life June 17th, 2011, 10:28 PM An identical thread has been launched in the international subforum: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=79825484#post79825484.
Pope Formosus June 17th, 2011, 11:16 PM Centrala Älvstaden will be made up of several areas:

Pope Formosus June 17th, 2011, 11:51 PM The first page of this (http://www5.goteborg.se/prod/fastighetskontoret/etjanst/planobygg.nsf/vyFiler/Lindholmen%20-%20kontorshus%20vid%20Navet-Plan%20-%20inf%C3%B6r%20antagande-Planeringsf%C3%B6ruts%C3%A4ttningar/$File/Planeringsforutsattningar.pdf?OpenElement) pdf gives an idea of the masterplan for the area. There is still plenty of unplanned space though.
The area has a lot of office buildings and is also the home of the second campus of Chalmers University of Technology. Some apartments are built and more will follow.

dj4life June 18th, 2011, 12:30 AM Great contribution! Thank you very much. :)
Jonipoon June 18th, 2011, 03:37 PM This is very exciting and I hope one of the bigger visions to come true. It's about time now, about time to change Sweden... even countries like Estonia have more highrises than us now.
dj4life June 18th, 2011, 03:45 PM Well, i wouldn't say that there are more highrises in the Baltic states. At least, there are no iconic ones, like 'Turning Torso' or 'Victoria Tower'. :)
Hopefully, one of the Swedish cities will manage to build a cluster in the nearest future. However it might be that even few cities will have more scrapers, namelly Stockholm (in Hagastaden and Norra Djurgårdsstaden) and Gothenburg (hopefully, in Frihamnen). Also, Malmö may have more highrises in some 20 years.
sthlm30 June 18th, 2011, 06:21 PM känns som att det kommer att bli dyrt. hur ska göteborg finansiera projektet?
Ingenioren June 18th, 2011, 10:28 PM even countries like Estonia have more highrises than us now.
Nope.
dj4life June 18th, 2011, 10:34 PM What do think about this project, Ingenioren? :)
Ingenioren June 18th, 2011, 10:37 PM ^ Brilliant!
dj4life June 18th, 2011, 10:39 PM I also think that the projects 'Karlavagnsplatsen' and 'Harbour stones' are great, aswell. :cheers:

sthlm30 July 9th, 2011, 03:33 PM vore det inte bättre om göteborg blir lite bredare till ytan först? nu är det ju inte så höga byggnader, men det kommer att se lite underligt ut med tanke på att gtb inte är en så stor stad.

The Billion Project April 17th, 2012, 12:29 AM The construction of the area 'Kvillebäcken' with 2000 new apartments mixed with groundfloor shops and some offices have been going on for some half year now.

Edvin July 13th, 2012, 05:47 PM Things are happening in Kvillebäcken, the buildings are slowly starting to pop up! I've got high hopes for the development. Even though I think it is a shame that they demolished all of the previous buildings I hope that the area will turn out more lively and urban than Norra Älvstranden. By the way, should discussions specifically on Kvillebäcken continue here, or in its own thread?

Boscorelli July 13th, 2012, 06:01 PM It has never been the case earlier at least that you need to ask. Instead creating new threads has been an important way of making people interested to stay here hasn't it? I hope it hasn't changed.
