What will be the nation's largest federal courthouse is also a shining example of sustainable design innovation. This new one million square foot facility strategically blends environmentally progressive public spaces with traditional symbols of American courthouse design. Icons such as the portal, column, rotunda and tower are seamlessly integrated with 21st century sustainable design solutions.
An atrium with a soaring, curved solar wall optimizes daylight, provides natural ventilation and captures energy through high-tech cells imbedded in the glass. Merging with LA's distinctive downtown City Hall District, the design strategically places public spaces on the warmer, south side of the building. The cooler north side is richly landscaped and utilized for fresh air intake and pollution filtering. A platinum LEED rating is expected.
