Texas is such a huge state that there are so many cities that it's hard to keep track of all the development, so I created this only for cities west of IH 35 which are San Angelo, Abilene, Wichita Falls, Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, and Amarillo excluding El Paso.

Abilene: Airport adds new tower

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5121/5227379956_1e828e3a01.jpg

The new tower will be located on the east side of the airfield and stand at 121 feet tall. It will be almost twice as tall as the current tower, which was built in the early 1950s, said Don Green, director of Abilene Regional Airport.

The new tower will increase the visibility of the air-traffic controllers to 100 percent of the airfield. More than 100 feet of the new tower has already been built, and the rest is expected to be completed in late 2011.

“The tower will open in March 2012,” Green said. “Before the tower is used, air-traffic controllers must test all of the equipment.”

Texas clean energy project.

http://kwes.images.worldnow.com/images/14390421_BG1.jpg

ODESSA--The Texas Clean Energy Project has come a long way from the day of the original announcement that West Texas would be getting a clean coal burning power plant.

That's why representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy and Summit Power Group are in town, to answer any questions residents might have about the project and potential impacts to the environment.

Once it's complete, the plant will be the first of it's kind in world. It will have the ability to recapture 90% of it's carbon emissions, making it that much safer for the environment.

That was the purpose for Tuesday's public hearing. After three short presentations, two from the DOE and one from Summit, the public was given a chance to address those officials about anything that concerns them, related to the project.

Officials want to emphasize this project will bring huge benefits to the area, the most obvious being, the boost to the local economy.

Earlier this year, Amarillo, Texas welcomed the opening of the Courtyard by Marriott Amarillo Downtown in the redeveloped historic Fisk Building. Designed by local architect Guy Carlander, the $12.7 million project represents the largest private investment in Amarillo’s central business district in over 40 years. The 11-story Fisk Building has been in Amarillo since 1927.

With 107 rooms on 10 floors, the new property is on the corner of Polk Street, Amarillo’s historic main street, and the site of recent restaurant and club development as part of a greater downtown re-development effort for Amarillo. A perfect fit for business travel, the new property features both suites and traditional guest rooms with a 24-hour business center, casual entertaining in the lobby restaurant and bar, a free parking garage for guests, a GoBoard in the lobby (a digital concierge for guests), and many other amenities.

The Courtyard by Marriott Amarillo Downtown is steps away from the major business addresses in Amarillo and a short walk from all the activity at the Amarillo Civic Center and Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.

In Amarillo. They are trying to bring the center of Amarillo back to downtown with a proposal for a new minor league baseball stadium south of the civic center, a convention center hotel, more WTA&M University facilities downtown and more businesses. Right now there is a revitalization going on on Polk street with restaurants and night clubs and the hotel posted above. It all starts with a new stadium for the Amarillo Sox though.

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Downtown Amarillo is about to change!

The formal unveiling of the downtown renovation project was done Wednesday at the Local Government Corporation meeting.

Phase one is made up of major changes and a final estimated cost of 108 million dollars.

David Wallace of Wallace & Bajjali made the presentation to board members as the first hurdle of government entities that must give their approval. The proposal includes a multi-events center/baseball field south of City Hall where Coca Cola distributing now sits.

West of City Hall will be a new 300 bed hotel and 750 space parking garage. By using private funding to coincide with public funding, the 108 million dollar price tag includes no new taxes for Amarillo citizens.

"I think one of the fundamental philosophies we had coming into this particular project was no new taxes," said David Wallace of Wallace & Bajjali.

Construction’s not scheduled to start right away, but dignitaries gathered Monday to turn the first shovels of dirt at the site of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s three-building complex in the Lubbock Business Park.

The $35 million project will include a two-story administration building with a full crime laboratory, a separate drivers license building and an ancillary building to house motor fleet operations.

A helipad and hangar are also part of the plan, said DPS Regional Commander Billy M. Fulton.

Austin developer breaks ground on new Overton student housing project

By Walt Nett

Posted: July 19, 2011 - 11:17pm

American Campus Communities broke ground last week on its fourth Lubbock student housing project, The Village at Overton Park.

The $34.8 million, 612-bed center will open a leasing office next month to start signing up tenants, and is scheduled for occupancy in August 2012, said Gina Cowart, vice president for investor relations with the Austin-based developer.

“The opportunity to develop in the vibrant Overton Park on a site that is pedestrian to campus, contiguous to student-oriented retail and across the street from the football stadium was very attractive to us.” Cowart said. “Texas Tech has shown steady enrollment trends and has a thriving off-campus housing market.”

The company, a real estate investment trust traded on the New York Stock Exchange, already owns and manages three student housing complexes in Lubbock — Raiders Pass, University Pointe, and University Trails.

The Texas Tech Department of Facilities Planning and Construction hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on May 11 for a new residence and dining hall located at 18th Street and Boston Ave.

Michael Molina, Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning and Construction, said the facility — which is being directed by Austin Commercial L.P. and designed by BOKA Powell LCC of Dallas — will cost $45 million.

Molina said the 178,000-square-foot residence hall will house 506 students, nine community advisers and one residence life coordinator. The hall will be divided between two- and four-person suites, each with its own private bathroom and common living area, and will also have ceiling fans, microwaves and refrigerators, he said.

The dining facility, Molina said, will be approximately 22,000-square-foot, and will include a two-story dining room with vaulted ceilings. The design will introduce new concepts in the way food is purchased and prepared on campus, he said.

South Plains College hosts groundbreaking on new residence hall

Posted: Oct 19, 2010 7:37 AM CDT

LEVELLAND, TX (KCBD) - South Plains College in Levelland broke ground Tuesday on a new residence hall.

The 104 bed facility should be completed by the fall of next year, but students aren't scheduled to move in until the Spring of 2012. SPC President Kelvin Sharp says the extra space is really needed. "We had a waiting list and we needed to accommodate more students; so we know there was some growth opportunity," said Sharp.

Ward County Welcomes New Rest Area With Historic Flare

NewsWest 9

WARD COUNTY--We all know, when you drive through West Texas, there's not much between our towns. Now, travelers along Interstate 20 will soon have a new place to pull over.

Ground was broken on a new safety rest area in Ward County on Tuesday and this won't be any ordinary pit stop.

According to Mike McAnally, District Engineer for the Odessa District of the Texas Department of Transportation, "They will have a visitors center. This one will have some heritage and historical significance. It will have a playground."

VIP's representing TXDOT, the Texas Historical Society, Ward County and the City of Monahans gathered just outside of Pyote to officially break ground on what many say is a project that's been a long time coming.

"One of the fascinating things is the Rattlesnake Bomber Base that is located very nearby in Pyote. Not so much of it is left anymore and this would be a great opportunity for TXDOT to build a rest area that would resemble an air base," McAnally said.

With a $14.5 million price tag, construction of the new rest area will serve more than just a beautification project. It will help cut down on deaths along the Interstate.

Amarillo Transportation Education Center Vision

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-i1IjDXnPZg/S-T_5sBuOVI/AAAAAAAAAq0/XEY0NvHX3vs/s1600/Render+2.jpg

The project was to design a transportation education center (a trucker school) on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas. Included in the design program is a bio-diesel truck stop, repair facilities, convenience store, and local food diner. The site and its relation to I-40 is unique, in that it must perform at multiple scales: Interstate 40 is a major artery of goods across the United States from Barstow, California to Wilmington, North Carolina, with Amarillo almost midway between the two.

Midland, Texas - The cost of housing in west Texas continues to rise. For many people affordable housing is hard to find. According to rent.com, the range in rent costs in Midland goes from $574 to a staggering $2,880 a month. That has the average renter paying around $1200 a month.

Odessa is seeing higher prices as well, ranging from $300 to $1700 a month with an average of a $1,000 a month. And these prices are only for units that are available. Many apartment complexes have no vacancy and the cost of renting or buying a home is out of the range of many people. But an exciting new apartment complex is soon coming to downtown Midland that could bring some relief.

The Brownstones Apartments will be located at the corner of Marienfeld and Front Street right in downtown.

It may be a large, dusty lot now, but Collin Sewell wants his planned Parks Legado Town Center to serve as a gateway to those coming to Odessa for the first time or people coming home.

“Off on the horizon you can see this glimmering shine of light,” Sewell said of travelers turning onto Highway 191 after landing at Midland International Airport. “It will be their first impression of what they see in Odessa.”

Sewell has big plans for the multi-use development that his Sewell Family of Companies is putting together on 68 acres. It will take up most of the space along Highway 191 between Billy Hext and Faudree roads.

Eventually, he’d like it to encompass 68 acres, with 700,000 square feet of space for everything from shops to multi-story, multi-family residential areas.

It will also employ around 100 people during construction and between 100 and 200 full-time and part-time workers once complete, Sewell said.

The streets would be lined with trees and water displays, Sewell said. The development would include a children’s play area and a jogging trail circling the property.

“It’s almost like a mini-city,” Sewell said. “Some people live there. Some people work there.”

Marwan Khoury, city of Odessa planning director, said people could sustain a living just within the project.

“This is big,” he said. “If it happens, it would be one of the biggest projects in the city of Odessa.”
