View Full Version : Norway - Traveling through the country
SvenDW June 24th, 2011, 11:37 PM I do have my plane-tickets for the 30th of June, until the 3rd of September, which means I'll be two months in Norway. My goal is to explore its culture & nature and return the 3rd of September to Belgium with a backpack full of amazing experiences. To get the culture well-known, I'm planning to ask any random farmer if I could maybe work with them for a day or two in exchange for a shared meal. I was wondering if these farmers would accept me?
Another question I had, is about hitchiking; Is it allowed to ask for a lift at every kind of road? (Main roads, primary routes, european roads, ...)
And last but not least, which cities/villages do you reccomend me to visit? Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger & Bergen are on my list until now.
Do you maybe have any other tips about traveling through Norway with a backpack and a tent? :>
Thanks in advance,
- Sven
City of Rain June 24th, 2011, 11:51 PM Nice to see someone so interested in the country - 2 months is quite a long time. Are you planning to be travelling around the entire time?
Hitchhiking isn't very common in Norway, and I think you might have some problems being picked up - people here can be quite paranoid (and judging from your name you're probably not a superhot chick). I don't think it's actually illegal, but I could be wrong.. you never know with this country (they liftet the ban on Red Bull just a few years ago).
I would probably add Ålesund and Trondheim to your list of cities, since you're going to be here for 2 months anyway :) I assume you're also planning to visit some tourist destinations such as prekestolen and some of the famous fjords (someone else would be better than me at helping you with this).
mjoks007 June 25th, 2011, 12:34 AM Lofoten is a must visit if you spending 2 whole months here. Maybe you could ask a fisherman up there to work for him, I somehow believe their a bit more open for letting you work for them.. I assume you have a camping stove and fishing rod with you, if you want to keep the expenses low.
muster June 25th, 2011, 11:57 AM You can hitchike at most roads in Norway, except motorways. I used to hitchike a lot when I was young. It shouldn't be a problem, but expect some waiting..
Regarding farmers, I don't think you will make many deals for a meal, but many farmers need extra help in the summer. Picking strawberry and so on(low salary). Read this (http://www.the-backpacking-site.com/countries/norway-working.html)
Which places you should go? If you'll stay here for two months it should be enough to explore many parts of Norway. Maybe start in Oslo. Pick some strawberrys in Lier between Oslo and Drammen. Later on you could travel along the south coast, down to Kristiansand, and then continue to Stavanger. Travel to Hardanger, more fruit farms, explore nature. Then you go to Bergen. Continue up the west coast, fjords, Jotunheimen mountain area, Ålesund, Trondheim. Go further north, Lofoten is a must, then Tromsø, Finnmarksvidda (sAMI AREA), and Nordkapp.

I agree, this is probably the best way to explore Norway when starting from Oslo. If you decide to come to Ålesund (http://www.straitcrossings.com/bilder/%C3%85lesund.jpg) you should check out the famous Geirangerfjord (http://www.brandstromsbuss.se/bilder/resmal/geirangerfjord.jpg) and Trollstigen (http://tylerochquentin.bloggsida.se/files/2009/06/2009-06-31trollstigen3.jpg) as well. :)
Galro June 26th, 2011, 11:30 AM While you are in the Trondheim area, then perhaps Røros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Røros) would be worth a visit.

Waiting shouldn't be the problem, I'm prepared to walk in the meantime. :>
And about the places I have to visit, do you think I can see all of them in ... 2 months? I mean, it's a distance of like 1000~km, doesn't look possible to do this by foot, so will I find people giving me a lift that often? I hope it, at least.
Already thanks for all ur answers by the way!
City of Rain June 26th, 2011, 12:48 PM ^^ Buses aren't that expensive, either. All Norwegians seem to have been taught (including myself), never to hitchhike or stop for hitchers because you'll get raped. It's not like in Eastern Europe where it's totally accepted and normal. However, if Muster says it's not a problem, then it might not be.
