There are now another two new "stations" shown on an updated map as being u/c: - Imperial Wharf - Shepherd's Bush (a totally new station not to be confused with the other 2 Shepherd's Bush stations which are also not an interchange - 3 completely seperate stations with the same name  ) Another note is the alteration of the Thameslink line at London St Pancras + London Kings Cross (2 seperate mainline rail termini but with a shared underground station). This is to coincide with work of the CTRL (Channel Tunnel Rail Link) which will see the 400m long Eurostars run into London St Pancras. The main task though is of a reorganisation of the massive London Underground ticket hall (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria underground lines + Thameslink) located underground between the two mainline rail termini. Also the realignment of the Thameslink stations to be more efficient. Completition work of all the above (bar CTRL) is May 2005. Interestingly a few lines and numerous stations which are u/c aren't shown unlike the above 2 stations are: - CTRL - East London Line Extension - Piccadilly & Heathrow Express Terminal 5 Extension - Crossrail http://img107.exs.cx/img107/4246/londonurban4af.jpg earthJoker December 16th, 2004, 02:36 PM Winterthur Bus: http://www.zvv.ch/images/liniennetz_winterthur_05_klein.gif ZVV -Canton Zürich S-Bahn http://www.zvv.ch/liniennetz_2005/liniennetz.gif ZVV- Nighttrains & Nightbusses http://www.vbz.ch/vbz_opencms/export/system/galleries/pics/nachtnetz/nachtnetz_zvv_small.gif Bigger version as pdf (http://www.zvv.ch/nachtnetz-Dateien/Nachtnetz_Kanton_04.pdf) m@rco December 16th, 2004, 03:07 PM I think nobody has post maps concerning Paris : Paris metro : http://img1.imagevenue.com/loc60/d32c8_plan_ratp_metro.gif Paris RER : http://img1.imagevenue.com/loc76/df5ec_plan_ratp_rer.gif Paris RER and commuter train : From RATP : http://www.imagevenue.com/loc18/d3293_plan_ratp_rer_transilien.gif From SNCF : http://img1.imagevenue.com/loc51/e922e_plan_sncf_rer_trans_old.jpg Hypernovean December 20th, 2004, 04:13 PM http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/images/maps/metro_tram_map_header.gif http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/images/maps/metro_tram_map_fullscale.gif http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/images/maps/metro_tram_citycenter.gif perthwa December 20th, 2004, 05:30 PM PERTH http://www.moveandstay.com/perth/picture_other/skytrain.jpg http://www.newmetrorail.wa.gov.au/Portals/6/Existing_NMR-map.gif Vertigo December 20th, 2004, 06:58 PM @Nick Taylor: is CrossRail already U/C? First the Berlin one is for Berlin and the whole of Brandenburg. I'm not sure of the metropolitan area around Berlin, it's still quite big, but not that big. 2nd, the London one (788km) is for just the city proper, not the metro area. For example, Melbourne has the 3rd largest tram network in the world of some. As quoted from a Victorian govt. Public Transport History webpage; "Melbourne now has the third largest tramway network in the world and the largest outside Europe, with approximately 480 vehicles in service on 29 routes covering 245 kilometres of double track." <http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/doi/internet/transport.nsf/allDocs/RWPE06934B7A6094C844A256AFD001C4975?OpenDocument> This would place it 2nd on your Tram/LRT list after Berlin. The urban train network is some 371 kms long. Again from the same site; "It radiates from the central city on 17 routes. The network consists of 371 route kilometres servicing 209 stations. Although, there has been little expansion of both networks in the last 20 years it is fortunate that Melbourne retained the tram netwrok unlike most other Australian cities. As for urban rail in Australia it has mostly been neglected but Perth and Sydney are gradually expanding their networks. Thanks for the european info though. As for urban rail in Australia it has mostly been neglected but Perth and Sydney are gradually expanding their networks. Thanks for the european info though. Quite true about the trams, and Melbourne has quite an impressive and long one. Another thing has to me mentioned. In Europe, a metropolitan area may have more than one tram network, and these are usually counted seperately. For example, in Frankfurt's Main/Rhein metro, there are three tram networks, seperate, but connected together by the suburban S-bahn trains. It's a bit like if Sydney had a network, Paramatta had a network etc. So, Melbourne is 3rd or so on the list (it fluctuates with many cities as I believe Vienna has an almost identical sized network, and both are enlarging - one leading over the other at different times.) using the "single" networks (although aren't Melbourne's trams still seperated into two different company's), but is about 6th or 7th on the list when using "metropolitan combined" networks. Yappofloyd February 1st, 2005, 08:31 AM Justme, Yes, you are of course right that the definition of an urban/suburan/metropolitan area bears much on the result. Along with Frankfurt, you mentioned Berlin/Bradenburg previously. I think most Sydney siders would consider Parramatta part of Sydney. I am not really concerned if MElb is 3rd, 6th or 10th largest. I just wanted to remind people that there are, (a few), large tram/LRT networks outside Europe, (HK & Singapore also, small but expanding). yes, the Melbourne public transport, train and tram network was privatised about 8 years ago but the network remains overseen by a govt. agency. One of the tram operators withdrew so it has reverted back to govt. operators. |
