Who wants to post their city's official subway maps? It'd be neat to have a collection.

Calgary - I know, it's not much compared to the other maps posted here, but this is Western North America, where the car is king.
http://www.calgarytransit.com/Routes/ct_train_map.gif

Calgary's LRT is one of the most successful LRT systems in North America. Within a decade, it is expected that a new west line will be built, as well as extensions to the northwest out past Dalhousie and to the Northeast at least as far as McKnight.

Glasgow SPT Subway
http://www.spt.co.uk/images04/subway_map.jpg
Interesting they actually call it a subway as well as underground, unlike London. I didn't even know they had a subway system until this weekend when I rode on it. Neat circular system, very London looking, but smaller and with a late-70s aura. Didn't like the overfill stormdrains though.

nick_taylor
October 25th, 2004, 01:43 PM
samsonyuen - The Glasgow Underground is actually along with the Budapest Underground the 2nd oldest networks in the world behind London.

A slightly more comprehensive rail map of Urban London that includes suburban lines that practically act as metro lines (due to their frequencies) within the urban area in London. This is not the "metro" area rail map which is totally different.

Actually the above map is not the tube map. It is the Urban London rail map. The Tube makes up around 40% of all heavy rail stations in the Urban London area.

MEXICO CITY

Total length of Mexico City subway is now 201.7 km. That does not include a light rail line serving the southern part of the city (18 stations, 18 km. from Tasqueña to Embarcadero).

Number of lines: 11 - all rubber tyred like some lines in Paris and the metros of Montréal and Santiago de Chile; except Line A which has standard steel rail)

The first system that uses symbols and colors for identifying stations.

The Mexico City metro is the cheapest subway system in the world, and it has one of the biggest transfer stations in the world: Pantitlán, terminus of lines 1, 5, 9, A, and tens of local bus lines.

Manila's CURRENT MRT (Yellow|Blue|Purple) and Commuter Railway (Orange|Green) route map
http://www.lrta.gov.ph/images/srts%20map.jpg

the entire Purple Line is now up and running (since a few weeks ago). The dotted/broken Blue Line is set to start construction within 2005. The Green Line is under rehabilitation and extends north out of the map.

Metro Manila's FUTURE Mass Rail Transit System (including two commuter railways)
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid107/paa9873b22dcae09782e7390d7d06678c/f95f4cc7.jpg
All the lines that hit the edge of the image extend much further. I just couldn't fit them in. Hahaha...

I edited a route map of the current network and added the planned lines in Photoshop. These aren't the definite plans and were only made up by me with information in news articles that have been released in the past few years and discussions in the SSC Philippine forums.

Well with all this in mind - what do you guys think is the best system?

For my money I would have to say either Moscow or New York.

Moscow is just so perfectly organized - not chaotic like a lot of the other systems.

Slightly "new" Urban London rail map. There are now another two new "stations" shown on an updated map as being u/c:
- Imperial Wharf
- Shepherd's Bush (a totally new station not to be confused with the other 2 Shepherd's Bush stations which are also not an interchange - 3 completely seperate stations with the same name  )

Another note is the alteration of the Thameslink line at London St Pancras + London Kings Cross (2 seperate mainline rail termini but with a shared underground station). This is to coincide with work of the CTRL (Channel Tunnel Rail Link) which will see the 400m long Eurostars run into London St Pancras. The main task though is of a reorganisation of the massive London Underground ticket hall (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria underground lines + Thameslink) located underground between the two mainline rail termini. Also the realignment of the Thameslink stations to be more efficient. Completition work of all the above (bar CTRL) is May 2005.

Interestingly a few lines and numerous stations which are u/c aren't shown unlike the above 2 stations are:
- CTRL
- East London Line Extension
- Piccadilly & Heathrow Express Terminal 5 Extension
- Crossrail

Who wants to post their city's official subway maps? It'd be neat to have a collection.

For a real big collection, already assembled, see http://www.reed.edu/~reyn/transport.html, from Adana to Yokahama.

Wow.Thanx for those maps Rufi.
Its nearly three years that i have not been back to Madrid.
It seems as if they are constructing new lines and stations every week.
Madrid must be the city with the most kilometres of metro per inhabitant in Europe.

Good question! :okay: But I suppose that very difficult to answer: ;)

Maybe this will can help you. I have the that information for UE:

METRO:

1. London: 408 km
2. Madrid: 226 km
3. Paris: 211,3 km
4. Berlin: 144 km
5. Valencia: 118 km
6. Stockholm: 108 km
7. Barcelona: 102 km
8. Wien: 61 km
9. Frankfurt: 58 km
10. Prage: 50 km

Out of the UE area:

NY: 398 km
Tokyo: 286,2 km
Moscow: 265 km
Chicago: 173 km
Washington: 164,5 km

COMMUTER RAIL IN UE:

1. Berlin: 3.107 km
2. Wien: 1.576 km
3. Frankfurt: 1500 km
4. Paris: 1401 km
5. London: 788 km
6. Zurich: 660 km
7. Prage: 639
8. Barcelona: 546 km
9. Madrid: 320 km
10. Manchester: 319 km

TRAMS/LRT IN UE:

1. Berlin: 303 km
2. Wien: 183 km
3. Prage: 137 km
4. Brussels: 133 km
5. Frankfurt: 125 km
6. Warszawa: 122 km
7. Helsinki: 90 km
8. Zurich: 69 km
9. London: 55 km
10. Stockholm: 27 km

So, in UE we can say that the first cities with the most "rail" transport system are:

Metro + Tram (Urban rail transport):

1. London: 463 km
2. Berlin: 447 km
3. Wien: 244 km
4. Paris: 231,3 km
5. Madrid: 226 km (no tram)
6. Prage: 187 km
7. Frankfurt: 183 km
8. Brussels: 168 km
9. Stockholm: 135 km
10. Valencia: 131 km

Rail Tranport: Urban and Suburban:

1. Berlin: 3554 km
2. Wien: 1820 km
3. Frankfurt: 1683 km
4. Paris: 1632 km
5. London: 1251 km
6. Prage: 826 km
7. Zurich: 729 km
8. Barcelona: 668,5 km
9. Madrid: 546 km
10. Manchester: 357 km

Well, maybe the km are quite wrong (some km up or down), but this is the list that I have.

I would like to have a very good list with all the networks in the world too (LRT, MRT and Commuter Rail).

I always thought that Toronto's extensive streetcar network should be on the subway/RT map, in the same way many other places include them. I always assumed they left them off because it would make the map too busy, but after seeing that Tokyo one...

So anyway, my homemade version:

In case youre wondering, this is what a Toronto streetcar looks like. Some however are twice as long, and bend in the middle for turns:

Fantastic stats, thanks, but just looking I noticed a couple of errors.

First the Berlin one is for Berlin and the whole of Brandenburg. I'm not sure of the metropolitan area around Berlin, it's still quite big, but not that big.

2nd, the London one (788km) is for just the city proper, not the metro area. The full metropolitan area surrounding London is 4642 route km, the 2nd largest in the world after Tokyo.

I have provided some stats here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=65822

SpastiK,

Your info is great but understandably eurocentric. What about Tokyo, Osaka and NY?

For example, Melbourne has the 3rd largest tram network in the world of some. As quoted from a Victorian govt. Public Transport History webpage;

"Melbourne now has the third largest tramway network in the world and the largest outside Europe, with approximately 480 vehicles in service on 29 routes covering 245 kilometres of double track."

<http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/doi/internet/transport.nsf/allDocs/RWPE06934B7A6094C844A256AFD001C4975?OpenDocument>

This would place it 2nd on your Tram/LRT list after Berlin.

The urban train network is some 371 kms long.

Again from the same site; "It radiates from the central city on 17 routes. The network consists of 371 route kilometres servicing 209 stations.

Although, there has been little expansion of both networks in the last 20 years it is fortunate that Melbourne retained the tram netwrok unlike most other Australian cities. As for urban rail in Australia it has mostly been neglected but Perth and Sydney are gradually expanding their networks.

Thanks for the european info though.

Quite true about the trams, and Melbourne has quite an impressive and long one.

Another thing has to me mentioned. In Europe, a metropolitan area may have more than one tram network, and these are usually counted seperately. For example, in Frankfurt's Main/Rhein metro, there are three tram networks, seperate, but connected together by the suburban S-bahn trains. It's a bit like if Sydney had a network, Paramatta had a network etc.

So, Melbourne is 3rd or so on the list (it fluctuates with many cities as I believe Vienna has an almost identical sized network, and both are enlarging - one leading over the other at different times.) using the "single" networks (although aren't Melbourne's trams still seperated into two different company's), but is about 6th or 7th on the list when using "metropolitan combined" networks.

Justme,

Yes, you are of course right that the definition of an urban/suburan/metropolitan area bears much on the result. Along with Frankfurt, you mentioned Berlin/Bradenburg previously. I think most Sydney siders would consider Parramatta part of Sydney. I am not really concerned if MElb is 3rd, 6th or 10th largest. I just wanted to remind people that there are, (a few), large tram/LRT networks outside Europe, (HK & Singapore also, small but expanding).

yes, the Melbourne public transport, train and tram network was privatised about 8 years ago but the network remains overseen by a govt. agency. One of the tram operators withdrew so it has reverted back to govt. operators.
