I was wondering for a while, NY has 2 teams in 2 major sports.
I'm talking about The giants and Jets (NFL) & Mets and Yankees (MLB).
now my question is why would one root for one over the other?
I heard that most "real" NYers support the Mets.what's true about this statement?
i want to know whats up with choosing between these 2 teams in these 2 major sports to root for as a New Yorker ? why jets , or why Giants, etc etc

Well, the Mets and Yankees can draw their respective fans for a geographical difference. Obviously the Yankees would have more fans in the Bronx, and Queens would be Mets territory. But that's not always true, as people just root for whoever they like. There's a bunch of different reasons why someone would root for a NY team over another one. Maybe their parents were diehard fans and it passed on to them, or maybe they just started watching them on tv and got hooked. Maybe some Mets fans are fans because they just hate the Yankees (hehe).
As for the Jets-Giants, I'm not too sure, since they both (for now) play in the Meadowlands. Some of my friends and family back home are Jets fans, some are Giants. Who knows...but I hope that helped somewhat.

I don't know why, but with the Giants it's either you hate them or like them, if you hate them, then you're a Jets fan.
Dash gave a good explanation about the Mets/Yankees.
This might not be necessarily true but, I find that usually Mets fans are Jets fans and Yankees fans are Giants fans.

Oddly enough, I've always found it to be the other way around. Go figure.

I guess both our theories are wrong then? :D
The Jets used to be horrible just like the Mets, so the fans can relate. The Giants and Yanks are more successful of the teams for the most part.
Lately though, the Jets you could argue are better.
