Leaving the Hayes neighborhood, you will see the following neighborhoods: Marina, Ocean Beach, Palace of Fine Arts, Civic Center and the Proposition 8 Protest, Russian Hill, North Beach and the views from Coit Tower.

Nothing like a sunny 78 degree day in the city!

Not too many places in the city that you can keep and part an SUV.

The Marina area is bounded to the east by Van Ness Ave, on the west by Lyon Street and the Presidio, on the south by Lombard St. The neighborhood sits on the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, staged after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to celebrate the reemergence of the city. The grounds for this world's fair were created from a former lagoon on landfill. Aside from the Palace of Fine Arts (POFA), all other buildings were demolished to make a residential neighborhood.

Much of the Marina is on landfill, and is susceptible to liquefaction during strong earthquakes. It should be noted that several people were killed during the Loma Prieta earthquake due to collapsing residential structures in 1989.
A three-block by three-block area is referred to as the Gold Box because of its prime location on sandstone/bedrock geology (as opposed to landfill). It is bordered by Fort Mason, Octavia St, Lombard St, and Van Ness Avenue. Those who live in this area are equidistant from the shops and restaurants of Chestnut St. (Marina), Union St. (Cow Hollow), and Polk St. (Russian Hill). Furthermore, this location is close to Fort Mason, Moscone Recreation Center, and The Marina Safeway.

Ocean Beach is a beach that runs along the west coast of San Francisco at the Pacific Ocean. It is adjacent to Golden Gate Park, the Richmond District and the Sunset District. The Great Highway runs alongside of the beach, and the Cliff House and the site of the former Sutro Baths sits at the northern end. The beach is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and operated by the National Park Service.

The beach throughout the late spring and summer is almost always enveloped in San Francisco's characteristic foggy weather leaving average temperatures there at 50 - 55 °F (9 - 12 °C), thus scaring away many tourists and beach goers. Conversely, the beach is popular with surfers, campers and bonfire parties. More beach-friendly weather occurs in late fall and early spring, when the fog dissipates. However, this beach creature didn't have the friendliest of looks for me and my camera.

The Cliff House is a restaurant perched on the headlands on the cliffs just north of Ocean Beach. I ate there during this visit and the food was enjoyable as always, pricy but good. The Cliff House has had five major incarnations since it was opened in 1858. Sadly, the 1896 seven story Victorian Chateau built by Adolph Sutro did not survive for it was beautiful and regal, at least that is what I take from photos of it. The Cliff House and Sutro Baths survived the 1906 earthquake with little damage but burned to the ground on the evening of September 7, 1907. Rebuilding of the restaurant was completed within two years and, with additions and modern restorations, is the one seen today.

The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District is a building originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. It was designed by Bernard Maybeck, who took his inspiration from Roman and Greek architecture. The sculptured frieze and allegorical figures representing Contemplation, Wonderment and Meditation were created by Ulric Ellerhusen. A single dome remains from the eight identical structures that were originally constructed. Towering colonnaded walkways linked the buildings on the site, but only a few remain intact. When I was there, there was significant renovations being done, good to see!

Massive homes to fit the neighborhood, but money in this city talks and between the Marina and the Sea Cliff areas, the residents have been able to keep the possibility of housing development in the Presidio under their control.

What more could a tourist ask for, perfect weather, incredible architecture and a good old San Franciscan protest! Politics in this city are not taken lightly, rather with much interest and passion. I share these pics not for political perspective, but instead to share what was part of city life during my visit.

The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco has one of the most comprehensive collections of Asian art in the world. Until recently housed at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, the Asian Art Museum re-opened on March 20, 2003 in the former San Francisco city library building opposite the San Francisco Civic Center, renovated for the purpose under the direction of Italian architect Gae Aulenti. The collection has approximately 17,000 works of art and artifacts from all major Asian countries and traditions, some of which are as much as 6,000 years old. There are 2,500 works on display in the permanent collection.

The museum owes its origin to a donation to the city of San Francisco by Chicago millionaire Avery Brundage, who was a major collector of Asian art. The Society for Asian Art, incorporated in 1958, was the group that formed specifically to gain Avery Brundage's collection. The museum opened in 1966 as a wing of the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park. Brundage continued to make donations to the museum, including the bequest of all his remaining personal art collection on his death in 1975.

In total, Brundage donated more than 7,700 Asian art objects to San Francisco, i.e. just over half the museum's current collection. In 1995, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Chong-Moon Lee made a $15 million donation to launch the funding campaign for a new building for the museum.

The City Hall of San Francisco, California, opened in 1915, in its open space area in the city's Civic Center, is a Beaux-Arts monument. The structure's dome is the fifth largest in the world. The present building is actually a replacement for an earlier City Hall that was completely destroyed during the 1906 Earthquake. The architect was Arthur Brown Jr whose attention to the finishing details extended to the doorknobs and the typeface to be used in signage. Brown also designed San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, Veterans Building, Temple Emanuel, Coit Tower and the Federal office building at 50 United Nations Plaza.

The War Memorial Opera House is located on the western side of Van Ness Avenue across from the rear facade of City Hall. The house has 3,146 seats plus 200 standing room places. (Hint for opera fans – I show up the night of the show and tell them I want to stand and tickets are like $10.00 or $15.00.) Completed in 1932, it is one of the last Beaux-Arts structures erected in the United States and employs the classic Roman Doric order in a reserved and sober form appropriate to its function commemorating all those who served in World War I. The inside is much far more festive and grand, but like all the structures in the area during a protest, they are closed for safe keeping. Thus, I could not get any shots of the interior of any of them.

North Beach is a neighborhood in the northeast of San Francisco adjacent to Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf. It has a primarily Italian flavor. North Beach is sheltered from ocean breezes by Russian Hill to the west and often enjoys sunny days when much of the city is shrouded in fog. The somewhat compact layout of the neighborhood consists of three-story buildings painted in light colors dating from the 1920s, when people rebuilt after the earthquake and fire of 1906.

Coit Tower was built atop Telegraph Hill in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the City of San Francisco. Lillie bequeathed one-third of her estate to the City of San Francisco "to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved". Contrary to popular opinion, the tower was not designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle. This belief persists in part because of Lillie Hitchcock Coit's affinity with the San Francisco fire fighters of the day. The art deco tower, 210 feet (64 m) of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard with murals by 26 different artists and numerous assistants.

Next thread will start with Saints Peter and Paul Church. Located (somewhat ironically) at 666 Filbert Street, it is directly across from Washington Square, San Francisco and is administered by the Salesians of Don Bosco. It is known as "La cattredale d'Italia ovest," or "The Italian Cathedral of the West." This building is very unusual in that the parish school is situated atop the church itself, around its clerestory level and is accessible from stairways under each of its twin towers. Because of this feature, the church's upper stained-glass windows are artificially-lit. After their civil ceremony in 1954, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio returned for photographs on the steps of this church.

I should point out how great the public transportation is in SF. So many options! So easy to get around. Didn't even think about using a car.

P.D.

:wink2:

Let me just preface this by saying that it's been hard for me to even show off these pictures. Not because of the pictures they contain, but what's contained behind the frame of reference.

I had no idea what to expect in San Francisco partially because I never let myself imagine - but I knew the moment I landed into SFO that I should have booked a one-way flight instead of wedging such a huge, undiscovered city into 2 and a half days. I was already regretting this tactical error the moment I heard the automated voice announcing the next BART train. After all, this was my last large unvisited city in America - I had been to the general Bay Area for work, but as you probably know, they are separate entities in many ways.

I have not been the same since - I am in Austin now and I am thoroughly depressed, perhaps the most depressed in my adult life. I have to convince myself, convince myself hard and long and plead with myself, to get out of bed instead of sleep in. I sleep for 14 hours a time here. And I realized I won't be the same until I get to be in a city, where I belong. I will die, I will either kill myself or cease to be myself, unless I am in a large city. I have grown unable to exist without human proportions surrounding me, and I say that with all seriousness. I am 45-50 minutes walk from the nearest store; I am 2 hours walk from the nearest bus stop. I haven't left the house for days. I get apprehensive looks and stares for simply walking in the neighborhood. This makes the fantastic time in San Francisco painful to even look back on. This makes Texas out to be what it is; a place where you can't survive without a car. I am miserable here. I am so miserable I am considering becoming homeless just so I can be back in a big city. I will last a few months here.

Which makes San Francisco so hard so swallow right now - I had never considered it for much of anything, which seems odd considering its prominence. I never let myself consider it because it was too obvious, it was the place where Mrs. Madrigal and Tales of the City took place, it was the place where gay people went because they needed to be gayer, it was this museum or monument in a seemingly quirky, impossible location, it was the place where people bitched about the things I thought were perks, like fog and cool temperatures, and worshiped the endless monotony of Victoriana.

My first experience of the city was coming up from the 24th Mission BART stop, and immediately I realized that there was a reason people keep on propping up this unlikely location, a seaport that should have been built down in San Jose where the land is flat, a place that you would have expected golf courses or a large national park, but certainly not a city.

Everyone was so absolutely nice, with no sense of entitlement or motive, I was welcome. I was not a tourist, I was assumed to be a local. I was asked directions. I was taken back by the way that others assumed I was part of their home. It made me believe for about 24 hours that I was, whether it was at Muddy Waters or in front of that Borg ship of a Civic Center.

I was no longer apprehensive about my sexuality, for I was one of many different kinds of gay people, I wasn't even on guard when people looked at me as I walked down the street, directly and in the eye, the opposite of Texas or Seattle. I felt at ease for the first time in years, to be honest.

I am at a sad place in my life right now, so I felt all the more at home with the cheerful painted ladies, which are oddly garish and upbeat for a city that is a sad reminder of AIDS. People warned me I would hate San Francisco, because it's so gay and it's full of so many homeless people, and it's so painted-on and postured, but I felt that it was the most down to earth, genuine place, where people accept the fate of being gay or being in a subtropical, sunny, frost-free locale, where beauty is simply everywhere.

And the hardest part is that there is a person involved in all of this, a person other than me of course. I met a special someone for the first time; he and I had been conversing off and on for 3 years on the internet. He was everything I had imagined, all of the things I scolded myself for imagining, the things you hope are true but you don't let yourself believe out of rationality.

The way he loved his city and the way he walked so fast to show me every neighborhood he could cover on foot was beautiful to watch. When I resisted the Castro, he brought me to the Castro, and showed me that it was just a few blocks and was as harmless as can be. It was so much less faggy and garish and full of so much less skeezy old men than I would have ever let myself believe; it was actually nice.

After holding onto him for a few hours in Dolores Park, after doing that thing where you know you have to say goodbye but you hold on for just a little longer, after kissing and then pulling away and then bringing your body's weight back forward, I was alone. His meds were not taking as soon as he had hoped and he was really, really tired. I could tell that he was doing this for me, and had I not shown up, he would have been in bed, asleep or convalescing.

I was alone on Valencia Street now and nowhere near tired. I was so mad at myself for denying myself the experience of this great city that I stayed up all night, well into the morning, walking around the neighborhoods, wishing to god that he was strong enough to be there with me. I went back to Castro and slipped into an anonymous bar to use the bathroom. I was one of 5 people on a Monday night, but I was welcomed. I was talked to like an adult, an adult regardless of my penis or my looks or my age, and my beer was refilled. I was treated like I'd always wanted to be treated, as a gay person, from out of town, with respect.

I got lost on my way back to Bernal Heights, where I was staying, and I was finally getting tired too, as it was 4AM and my flight left the next afternoon (in San Jose, no less.) So I paused and sat in the middle of the park, cried my eyes out even though it was pouring rain, and looked up as a policeman came walking towards me.

I had walked the circle around Holly Park three times now and couldn't find how to get to Jarboe. I was so upset with myself over being lost in the first place, as I am NEVER lost, not in any city in the world, for I have worshipped maps and street signs since I was old enough to read. I was upset at myself over letting myself love a stranger, a stranger who is almost homeless but most certainly had more of a home in this city than I did in any location.

"This park closes at 10PM", the Asian police officer informed me. I said nothing, stood up, looked down the hill, and tried to gain my composure. "Are you okay?" he asked.

"No," was all I could say, and I started to clinch my teeth in fear. I was hopeful that the rain had washed away any residue of drugs or tears that were certainly all over me. "I can't find Jarboe," was all I could do to explain myself. Wearing a silly orange sweater and with my hair completely soaked, but with nice shoes and a middle-class face, he must have seen that I wasn't homeless and relented from the rules. But I knew that the moment I set foot in Texas, I would be homeless.

"I'll take you home," he said, and as I climbed into the front seat of another stranger's car, I failed to correct him, as it was not my home, but I wanted it to be. After a stilted conversation and a few lies about jetlag and bars closing at 4AM in New York vs. California, I was let off at the street corner. Bernal Heights was so calm, so still, that I turned down Jarboe and went back to Cortland, and just sat underneath the Muni bus shelter and stared out at the Bay beyond. I was wet and muddy but I didn't want the night to end.

It's all I can do now to get myself back to that park. I would choose to be homeless in that park rather than have a roof over my head in Cedar Park, Texas. Am I nuts? I must get back.

San Francisco is my favorite North American city. I always love visiting this beautiful city. The weather was picture perfect.
