Aerotrain comes to a temporary halt
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ Friday October 22, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2010/10/22/central/7272521&sec=central

THE aerotrain service at the KL International Airport (KLIA) will be suspended for four-and-a-half months from Nov 1 and buses will be used to transport passengers during this period.

The trip between the main terminal building and satellite building will take 10 minutes.

On Wednesday, the Malaysian Airports Berhad (MAB) organised a trial run of its shuttle bus service between the two buildings from 8am to 4pm.

During the eight-hour trial run, 11,000 passengers were transported, involving 37 departures and 20 arrivals.

Hands on: Azmi (in white shirt) directing passengers at the satellite building.

MAB senior general manager (operation services) Datuk Azmi Murad said the objective was to provide Malaysia Airports and airlines at KLIA the opportunity to test the effectiveness of the shuttle service with actual passengers and to identify any areas that required fine-tuning before Nov 1.

He said the temporary service involving 16 buses would be rigorously tested to minimise inconvenience especially during peak hours and to ensure smooth and fast transfer of international passengers.

He said signboards had been put up to notify travellers and personnel would be on standby to guide passengers and ensure smooth operations.

“All airline operators have also been given recorded messages to play on flights to create awareness on the closure of the aerotrain service. The units are due for a complete overhaul as they have been operating for 12 years and clocked two million kilometres,’’ added Azmi.

This way please: Passengers departing from KLIA following the signages
leading them to the waiting buses that will take them to the satellite
building from the Contact Pier.

The shuttle bus lounge for departing passengers is located at the ground level of the Contact Pier, where the shuttle service will transfer passengers to Gate C11 to proceed to their boarding gates.

For arriving passengers, they will proceed to Gate C5 of the satellite building where the shuttle service will transport them to the Contact Pier for Immigration clearance and baggage reclamation.

“We want to ensure that the shuttle system is working effectively as we want passengers to continue enjoying the same level of service during this period,’’ said Azmi.

He said the closure was necessary to facilitate the KLIA Spurline expansion project, which involved modifiying the existing aerotrain fleet and commissioning an additional three-vehicle aerotrain.

The project will also enable the construction of a crossover switch between the two existing guide ways. The Spurline is a branch line from the existing guide-way connecting to the new Operation, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) building.

“The OMSF will serve as a permanent venue for scheduled maintenance work and also to house another train that will serve as a replacement during repairs or maintenance,’’ said Azmi.

Currently in the event of a breakdown, maintenance is undertaken at Satellite A terminal station, disabling the full operation of the aerotrain service.

“We need a third train in such circumstances. Now, there are two cars per train to ferry 160 passengers and once the project is completed, each of the trains will have three cars to ferry 240 passengers with the third train on standby,’’ said Azmi.

Budget for KLIA 2 increased
By Presenna Nambiar Published: 2010/10/30
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/pmab1/Article/index_html

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (5014) is ready to spend some RM500 million more than the earlier budgeted RM2 billion for total construction cost of Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had said in his second stimulus package announcement in March last year that the new permanent low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) would cost RM2 billion.

The airport operator said yesterday that its board of directors had mandated a sum of RM2.5 billion for the overall construction cost of KLIA 2.

MAHB chief financial officer Faizal Mansor, however, stressed that the RM2.5 billion budget was not final.

"While we will try to keep it below the budget, it is important to us to get the terminal completed well," he said at a briefing to announce the group's third quarter results in Sepang, Selangor.
While some big contracts have been dished out, Faizal declined to reveal how many more would be awarded.

KLIA 2 is now being planned to have double the initial size of 120,000 sq m.

While the new terminal is only half the size of KLIA's main terminal building, it is designed to have more than double the commercial space of the main terminal building.

After the recent completion of a retail optimisation plan at the KLIA main terminal building, about 7 per cent of the building is now commercial space compared to KLIA 2, which is expected to have about 20 per cent commercial space.

"What this means is that while the cost of running KLIA 2 will be half that of the main terminal building, it will be more viable, more sexy," Faizal said.

On its results for the third quarter ended September 30 2010, MAHB said net profit was down by almost 26 per cent. This was largely due to accounting losses it had to recognise in that period because of the adoption of the Financial Reporting Standard (FRS) 139.

MAHB made RM61.8 million net profit compared with RM83.4 million a year ago. The loss arising from adopting FRS 139 was about RM30 million.

Part of this loss came from recognising concessions payable at fair value for the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey.

Year to date, the group recognised RM54 million accounting losses from the associate. MAHB has projected that the full-year figure will touch RM80 million.

Group operating profit in the period reviewed was up 12 per cent to RM128.3 million compared with RM114.4 million in the previous corresponding period.

No Aerotrain service at KLIA until March 15
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ Monday November 1, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2010/11/1/central/7309341&sec=central

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain service will be closed today until March 15 next year to allow for maintenance and modification work on the two trains.

The closure is necessary to facilitate the KLIA Spurline expansion project, modification of the existing lines and to allow the commissioning of one additional three-vehicle Aerotrain.

It will also enable the construction of a crossover switch between the two existing guide-ways. The Spurline is a branch line from the existing guide-way, connecting to the new Operation, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) building, which is still under construction.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/11/1/central/m_2train.jpg

Temporary measure: The Aerotrain station at both the
Satellite Building and Contact Pier will be closed until March 15.

The new OMSF will facilitate the maintenance of the Aerotrains and accommodate overhaul work without any disruption to operations once completed.

It will also address the future needs of the train system, connecting Satellite A terminal to the planned Satellite B terminal.

KLIA will have a dedicated off-line Aerotrain maintenance and storage facility, enabling repair work on the Aerotrain to be performed without any interruption to the service.

Now, the maintenance is undertaken at the Satellite A terminal station.

During the shutdown period, shuttle buses will be stationed round the clock to ensure smooth transfer of passengers between the Satellite building and the Contact Pier.

Passengers will take 10 minutes to travel from one building to the other using the bus service compared with four minutes by Aerotrain.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/11/1/central/m_2sign.jpg

Clear directions: Passengers heading to the Satellite Building following
directional signages to the waiting buses at the Contact Pier in KLIA.

The aerotrain has been in service for 12 years and clocked more than two million kilometres and it was time for a major overhaul.

KLIA has arranged 16 buses to ferry passengers from the main building to the satellite building and airport authorities have also stationed personnel to guide passengers to the shuttle bus lounge for departing passengers.

The bus lounge is located at the ground level of the Contact Pier, where the shuttle service will transfer passengers to Gate C11 to proceed to their boarding gates.

For arriving passengers, they will proceed to Gate C5 of the satellite building where the shuttle service will transport them to the Contact Pier for Immigration clearance and baggage reclamation.

ERL expects 8pc rise in ridership, aided by VIP service
By Azlan Abu Bakar Published: 2010/11/23
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/erel/Article/

EXPRESS Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) expects to see ridership for its KLIA Express to increase by 8 per cent this year, backed by among others its new VIP chauffered service.

Chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said although revenue contribution from the new service at present may be small, it is an important market for ERL.

"It would take some time to grow the segment as it is a very niche market for us," she said, noting that its target group included business travellers and hotel guests who require end-to-end services.

She said the company was working closely with hotels and travel agents to further promote the new VIP service.

The operator of the high-speed KLIA Express and KLIA Transit previously provided up to 30 limousine trips daily for the premium service to office and hotel guests.

With the expansion of the service to homeowners, it is targeting a growth of 50 per cent in trips to encourage ERL's ridership.

At present, ERL's market share of commuters to and fro the KL International Airport (KLIA) is about 15 per cent.

ERL is 50 per cent-owned by YTL Corp Bhd and 40 per cent-owned by Lembaga Tabung Haji. It provides daily rail services between Kuala Lumpur at KL Sentral and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Noormah said the growth target would also be supported by growth in passenger traffic volume at KLIA.

"Our ridership is very much dependent on the airport numbers. We are optimistic of achieving the target," she told Business Times in Kuala Lumpur recently.

She said last year, the whole aviation industry including the ERL services was badly affected due to the global economic crisis and the H1N1 epidemic.

"We hope to do better this year and see growth in tandem with the improved economic environment."

On its track expansion, Noormah said ERL had submitted its proposal to the government nearly one year ago and was still waiting for a firm approval from the government.

She said initially, the plan was to extend the tracks by another 10km to the existing low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang but as operations will be moved to the new LCCT called KLIA 2, the tracks will only need to be further extended by two kilometres.

She declined to reveal the investment cost of the expansion as it had yet to be finalised with the authorities.

"In order for us to complete the tracks in line with the completion of the new LCCT, we need the approval as soon as possible," she said, noting reports of the extension had been mentioned by ministers and Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd previously

KLIA2 to stress online check-in
By June Ramlee Published: 2010/11/26
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/jrmass/Article/

THE new low-cost carrier terminal, or KLIA2, which will be operational by mid-2012, aims to gradually move away from traditional check-in and conduct more web-based check-in services.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said that although there are concerns that not everyone is able to access the Internet, the airports are looking at ways to make the change possible.

This includes the fact that people cannot go online as broadband penetration in the country and region is still low.

"We know that this is going to be an issue but the airports are looking into that," he told the media when met at the "Check-in Asia" conference in Sepang yesterday.

Bashir said currently the ratio between traditional counter check-in and online check-in is 70:30.

The same ratio will be maintained when KLIA2 is operational in mid-2012, but MAHB aims to gradually move the operations more towards online check-in.

"We can do a lot with the space that we have now. When the check-in counters are not there we can use the space for so many things. Already we have so many enquiries," he added.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) managing director and chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin said the airline is looking at offering a variety of options besides traditional counter check-in servives, for its customers to have a seamless experience when flying with MAS, as well as to minimise waiting time at the airports.

"Currently, we have mobile check- in services, online check-in, kiosks and also IPAD, al-though it is not in sale in Malaysia yet," he said.

He also said MAS was looking at ways to use social networks such as Twitter and Facebook to enable their custo-mers to check in in the future.

"We haven't really figured out how this will work but we are looking at it and we are open to ideas," he said.

Azmil also said that MAS was looking at reinstating several new routes as it is now a profit-making company.

"We trimmed between 15 and 20 per cent of our routes, especially those non-profitable ones to Europe, but now we are reinstating slowly and focusing more on routes to Asia as this is where the growth is at the moment," he said.

Wouldn't it be better to have built the 2nd sattelite and increasing the size of the MTB of KLIA? Theres adequate provision for expansion of the existing terminal afterall.

It just seems like overkill to have 2 terminals, which makes it harder for retailers and other services to have adequate coverage of both terminals, without increasing overheads.

IPOH, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- The public can now buy Electric Train Service (ETS) tickets from Ipoh to KL International Airport (KLIA) and Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang.

"Passengers arriving at KL Sentral Station only need to change to KLIA Express Train while those bound for LCCT must alight at Salak Tinggi station and continue the journey by bus," said Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar when launching the ticket at Ipoh train station here Thursday.

Present include Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTMB) president Dr Aminuddin Adnan and Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor.

Syed Hamid hopes that the public would utilise ETS as it saves travelling time from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur.

He was confident that ETS would help bring more tourists to visit the many destinations in Perak.

Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur trevelling time is two hours one way. ETS was launched on Aug 12.

Ipoh-KLIA ticket is at a promotional RM65 for adult and RM34 for children until Feb 28 while Ipoh-LCCT at Rm42.50 for adult and RM25 for children.

10 January 2011
Rapidly expanding Swiss chain to open Mövenpick Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA
Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has signed a management agreement to operate the Mövenpick Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA, a 333-room upscale property, convention centre and wellness facility in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Set to open in early 2014, the hotel will be conveniently located a few minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the F1 Sepang International Circuit.

The upscale hotel will form part of a larger 15-acre development comprising a world-class Convention and Exhibition Centre and is ideally designed to host the increasing number of incentive groups, business and leisure travellers flying in and out of Kuala Lumpur.

Datuk Ismee Ismail, Group Managing Director and CEO of owning company Lembaga Tabung Haji, said: "We are extremely delighted about our new partnership with Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, as it enables us to combine our local expertise with a leading globally recognised brand."

"The project is coming up next to the Sepang Holy Mosque and will include an expansive Hajj Complex. We teamed up with Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts as it has extensive experience hosting pilgrims in the Middle East as well as meeting corporate travellers' needs all year round. We are proud to bring such a renowned hotel company to Malaysia and this reflects the confidence of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts to collaborate with Lembaga Tabung Haji."

The 26,000sqm Convention and Exhibition Centre will be an important business draw, featuring a 1,330sqm column free ballroom, exhibition hall, multi-function rooms and boardrooms.

Guests will have plenty of chance to unwind too, with the 250-seat all-day dining restaurant, two speciality restaurants and Lobby Lounge and Convention Centre cafe - along with the wellness centre, fitness facilities, two swimming pools and shops.

The 333 rooms will span nine floors with room sizes ranging from 30.5sqm for standard rooms, up to 203sqm for the Royal Suite.

The hotel's design will incorporate modern architectural elements with archways, courtyards and large atriums, intertwined with landscaped gardens and water features, and conform to sustainable build and operating practices in order to meet Green Globe standards.

Andreas Mattmüller, Chief Operating Officer for Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East & Asia, said the property illustrates its commitment to the Asian market and in particular Malaysia, a key gateway destination for South-East Asia. "We are very excited about this landmark project, which will appeal to business, religious and leisure travellers."

Malaysia Airports Handled 34.3 Million Passengers At KLIA In 2010
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v5/ne....php?id=556905

January 15, 2011 17:40 PM
SEPANG, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports handled 34.3 million passengers last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), an increase of about 14.8 per cent from the 29.1 million passengers recorded in 2009.

Its senior general manager operations services Datuk Azmi Murad said, the growth was almost double from what the airport operator anticipated for the year, which was about eight per cent.

"We saw an increase in terms of frequency from airlines that are operating to KLIA, particularly from the Middle East," Azmi added.

He was speaking to reporters after receiving Garuda Indonesia's new Boeing 737-800 aircraft for its operations to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here.

Azmi noted that Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways had increased their frequency to Malaysia throughout last year.

At the same time, low cost carrier AirAsia and Air Asia X had also contributed to the strong growth.

"AirAsia X is connecting passengers from Australia to the Low Cost Terminal before transferring them to Europe," he explained.

On another note, Azmi said the improved global economic weather was also contributing to the growth in passengers at the KLIA.

KLIA in 2006 was ranked the 13th busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic.

As for this year, he said Malaysia Airports was targeting about a seven per cent growth in passengers handling.

"This year, we already have one new airline, Firefly Jet. Today, the airline began operations from here with two flights to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu respectively.

"This is going to be quite positive for us. We expect to see a good number of passengers using Firefly," he added.

Commenting on Garuda Indonesia using the bigger Boeing 737-800 new geneation aircraft for its operations to Kuala Lumpur from today, Azmi said:"It is also going to contribute to the increase in passengers from the republic."

According to Malaysia Airports, it processed a total of 3,896,054 passengers from Indonesia last year, an increase of 7.3 per cent from 2009.

Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia's vice president marketing, Don Jusuf Palito Bustan said, the new aircraft which would increase load capacity up to 40 per cent, would significantly multiply the number of passengers travelling on this high demand route.

"The market potential market is still open to us.We see the traffic as being good. That is why we are using the new aircraft," he added.

Don Jusuf also said that the Indonesian flagship carrier was preparing itself to leverage on Asean's Open Sky Policy, which comes into effect in 2015.

"We not only plan to increase the frequency but also the destinations such as from Jakarta to Penang or Medan to Kuala Lumpur," he added.

According to him, the people from Medan always flew to Penang to seek medical treatment using other airlines to get to the island.

Besides using the bigger aircraft, Garuda Indonesia is also increasing its frequency from Jakarta to twice daily -vice versa - from thrice a week, previously.

KLIA 2 slated to open in October 2012

The new permanent low-cost carrier (LCCT), dubbed "KLIA 2", is scheduled for operation in October next year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the current LCCT in Sepang will be converted into a cargo terminal.

"Those low-cost carrier operators who are reluctant to move have to do it as we are converting the terminal for cargo movement," Kong said.

He said the KLIA 2 will be completed by next year.

"Work in the terminal and runways are so far progressing. We are expecting the terminal to be fully used latest by year-end of 2011," he added.

Kong said the new LCCT, which is sited on 243,000 sq m and 2km from the main Kuala Lumpur International Airport terminal, will be able to handle 30 million passengers a year. It can be expanded to up to 45 million passengers.

"A lot of people has complained that the current LCCT has become too overcrowded and congested. Last year alone, the terminal handled about 17 million passengers, beyond its capability of handling up to 15 million passengers," he said.

Kong was speaking to reporters at the handing-over of the Flight Inspection System by Systematic Aviation Services to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, yesterday.

The mobile system, which can be installed in an aircraft to monitor the safety of aircraft traffic within the 22 air terminals in the country, can also be used in hangars or on runways.

He said the system, worth RM20.43 million, will increase the safety levels of civil fights.

He said a total of 820,000 aircraft movements were recorded by DCA traffic control towers nationwide last year.

Can someone please help with info regarding transferring between KLIA main terminal and the LCC terminal.
Have clients arriving in March, arrive around 06:00am from Johannesburg with MH, then depart 12:00 to Langkawi with AirAsia. Same after Langkawi they fly back with AirAsia to KUL and then on with MH to Phuket.
What is easiest way of moving between terminals, is there a airport train, bus, how much will it cost? For spending some time, maybe eating a little, what is the best terminal to spend most of the time at...ie have a nice breakfast at KLIA, hang around before changing to LCC terminal for check-in?
Thanks!

Aerotrains at KLIA to resume ops on Mar 23
Published: 2010/03/14
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/20110314173818/Article/index_html

The Aerotrains connecting the main terminal and satellite buildings at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will be fully operational on March 23.

The construction of the new spurline connecting the Operation Maintenance and Services Facility (OMSF), the crossover switch between the existing tracks and the delivery of the new three-car Aerotrains, will be completed as scheduled on March 15.

Malaysia Airports said in a statement today that the Aerotrains are currently operating on a dry run basis.

As an additional precautionary measure before the Aerotrains are made available for public use, Malaysia Airports has decided to extend the dry runs until March 22, to ensure and enhance the safety of operations.

It said the Aerotrains could be made available earlier to the public prior to March 23, should the dry runs prove to be satisfactory. - Bernama

Eraman sees revenue boost from KLIA lifestyle mall
By Hamisah Hamid Published: 2008/08/25 BusinessTimes

http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/Monday/Nation/24ERAMAN.xml/Article/Current_News/BTIMES/Images/btgraph10/eraman.jpg

MALAYSIA Airports (Niaga) Sdn Bhd (Eraman), the retail arm of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), expects its soon-to-be launched lifestyle shopping mall at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to contribute 20 per cent to its business next year.

Eraman head of merchandising division (core products) Elina Jamaluddin said the company's revenue from core products such as duty-free items, perfumes, cosmetics and convenience shops, have been growing double-digit over the years.

"The opening of the mall at the KLIA contact pier is expected to boost the revenue further. For this year we can't really gauge, but we anticipate it to contribute at least 20 per cent to Eraman's business next year," she told Business Times in an interview in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Eraman, with retail outlets spread over the KLIA, Kuching International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Labuan Airport and Low Cost Carrier Terminal, registered RM289 million revenue last year. This represents 20 per cent of the MAHB group revenue of RM1.38 billion.

Elina said the Contact Pier International - a walkthrough mall that stretches along the 30,000 sq ft contact pier area of the KLIA - is expected to be operational in later part of October this year.

The open concept shopping mall, which is located near the aerotrain station and the area where the regional and international travellers converge, blends contemporary design and fixtures with the batik colours, hues and motifs as the main decorative element.

Besides food and beverages, fashion apparels, accessories, timepieces and complementary services, other highlights at the lifestyle mall include "Kidz Smart Tunnel", that would offer duty-free items targeted at junior travellers.

"We are bringing retail to the next level. No airport in the world has a lifestyle approach," she said, adding that airports in general do not have the liberty of space for such retail concept.

According to Elina, for certain international brands that will be featured at the mall, the lifestyle concept is the first for them, either in Asia Pacific or globally.

For instance, the World of Cadbury, for the first time, will showcase the Cadbury brand stories and timeline that traces the brand since the early 1900s. Hershey's concept shop, meanwhile, will be the first one outside the US that will feature Hershey's history wall showing actual scenes of Hershey Town in Pennsylvania, the home of the Hershey Company.

On the recent escalating oil prices, Elina said it has not significantly impacted Eraman's sales growth so far. As at June this year, the company was still on track to meet its forecast.

"To mitigate any downside, we will continue to improve our offerings. Airport retailing is unique and a niche market as travellers generally buy on impulse and for Asians, the general purchasing trend is mainly for giftings," she said.

Eraman always ensures that its product offerings meet customers' preference and comprise value packs and special travel retail exclusives which are only available at its airport outlets, she added.

Eraman perkfor riders of KLIA Ekspres
By Kamarul Yunus Published: 2011/03/23
http://www.btimes.com.my/articles/erlman/pix_middle

Eraman Malaysia, the retail arm of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, expects a big jump in revenue to RM511 million this year.

This will be driven mainly by the opening of new outlets, marketing collaboration and introduction of an incentive scheme for its sales advisers.

Eraman chalked up RM413 million sales from its 43 outlets nationwide last year, general manager Umar Bustaman said.

"Of this, almost 85 per cent of the sales generated from the outlets at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang)," he added.

In KLIA alone, there are 21 Eraman outlets located at the main terminal building, Low-Cost Carrier Terminal, satellite building and contact piers.

Umar was speaking to reporters after the official launch of Eraman-KLIA Ekspres marketing collaboration at KLIA yesterday.

Umar said the company plans to open seven new outlets this year, starting with three in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. There will also be new outlets in Kuching, Langkawi, and KLIA. The latter outlet will be sited at the contact pier of the main terminal building.

"Some of the new outlets are expected to operate at the earliest in June or July," he said.

Investments on the new outlets would be manageable as the company needs to spend mostly on renovation only.

"Currently, most of the plans already at the tender stage. By April, we expect to start renovation works on some of the new outlets," Umar said.

Eraman expects a 10 per cent increase in revenue from its pact with Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) through the latter's train service, KLIA Ekspres.

Under the pact, the commuters can use their single KLIA Ekspres ticket to get a 10 per cent discount whenever they spend a minimum of RM350 at any participating Eraman outlet.

The promotion began on March 1 and runs until September 30.

Eraman also plans to reward its retail advisers nationwide as part of its efforts to boost sales.

"The retail advisers will be rewarded according to their sales. Hopefully, we will be able to implement the scheme by April," Umar said.

Meanwhile, ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said it is banking on the collaboration to meet its target of handling some two million KLIA Ekspres riders.

"KLIA Ekspres moves about 1.6 million travellers a year between the airport and the city. Our passengers will pass through KLIA, and we hope that with this offer, we have given them that extra reason to head straight for Eraman's outlets to shop," she said.

New routes:
Qatar Airways will be flying to Brussels and Stuttgart.

FLYING twice daily from Kuala Lumpur, Qatar Airways has added two more destinations to their growing network — Brussels and Stuttgart, via Doha.

An extra three weekly services from Kuala Lumpur will be added from tomorrow onwards, connecting the Malaysian capital to Doha twice a day, marking the airline’s 10th year of operations in Malaysia.

As one of the airline’s most popular and oldest routes in South-East Asia, the airline’s Kuala Lumpur route has continually grown since the airline launched its services in 2001.

Qatar Airways launched scheduled flights to Europe’s capital city of Brussels in January and Stuttgart in March, establishing the airline’s 98th and 99th international destination and marking the Gulf carrier’s third new European route to open in as many weeks. Qatar Airways began operating flights to both Bucharest and Budapest from its Doha hub in January.

“By adding Brussels to the Qatar Airways network, it has opened up a myriad of connections through other hubs in Doha to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions.

These new additions also enhance the airline’s presence in Brussels further as demand for the service grows and promises an increased capacity by the end of the year,” said Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker.

KLIA wins best airport immigration service award

http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=119561

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) bagged the World’s Best Airport Immigration Service award at the Skytrax 2011 World Airport Awards in Copenhagen, Denmark recently.

KLIA also retained its place among the world’s top 10 airports with a ninth place finish at the same event.

Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd, the operator of the KLIA, said in a statement yesterday the win is a reflection of the high service level for immigration formalities at the airport.

“From the feedback received, this is not only in terms of overall service efficiency, but also the quality and courtesy of the individual staff members,” it added.

The World Airport Awards are based on survey results from 11.38 million questionnaires completed by over 100 different nationalities of airline passengers, covering more than 240 airports worldwide. — Bernama

It’s official:
Noormah (second from left) and Umar (centre) at the launch of the promotion.

KLIA Express ticket holders will be rewarded with a special 10% discount at Eraman Malaysia, the retail arm of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, whenever they spend a minimum of RM350 at any participating outlets.

This is the latest collaboration by Eraman with Express Rail Link (ERL) in anticipation of creating greater awareness for the Eraman brand and to provide value to ERL commuters.

This partnership was launched by Eraman Malaysia general manager Umar Bustaman and ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang.

“We strongly believe the commuters will take advantage of this strategic promotion.

“They can exchange their KLIA Express single ticket to obtain the discount at the KLIA Eraman outlets,’’ said Umar.

He added that Eraman was consistently looking for opportunities to drive revenue and create awareness of the Eraman brands through marketing collaborations.

Customers can get their merchandise from all Eraman outlets located at the Satellite Building, Contact Pier and the Main Terminal Building.

Their privileges apply to merchandise such as fragrances, cosmetics, chocolates, liquor, fashion apparels and accessories.

Noormah said since Eraman is the premier airport retailer in KLIA, it was natural that ERL want to work with the best partner who shares a common interest in providing customers with the best quality of service, and true value-for-money.

This promotion is valid until Sept 30.

KLIA2 40% completed
By JEEVA ARULAMPALAM Friday July 29, 2011

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2011/7/29/business/b_3klia2.jpg

A model of the KLIA2.

SEPANG: Airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is more than 40% into the construction of KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2), its official said.

MAHB chief financial officer Faizal Mansor said that road works linking KLIA2 were underway and building structures were being put in place.

More details on the progress of the permanent low-cost carrier terminal would be announced soon, he told reporters yesterday at the company's second-quarter results briefing.

Faizal also said that the cost of development for KLIA2 remained at the estimated RM2bil “until an update was made otherwise” and it was working towards the October 2012 completion deadline.

For its second quarter ended June 30, MAHB posted a net profit of RM81.8mil against RM59.6mil posted a year earlier. Its revenue for the quarter grew 25% to RM654.23mil from RM525.01mil made one year ago, mainly due to recognition of construction revenue for KLIA2 and Penang International Airport.

As of this financial year, MAHB has adopted the IC interpretation 12: service concession agreements (IC12), an accounting treatment that recognises construction revenue from airports being built or upgraded. Construction revenue for the quarter and six-month period were RM182mil and RM337.1mil respectively, with 95% of the revenue coming from KLIA2.

Stripping out the construction revenue, the consolidated revenue for the three months ended June 30 was higher by 8.4% at RM472.2mil.

Revenue for the quarter under review improved owing to positive growth of 7.3% from airport operations, driven by an increase in non-aeronautical revenue of 14.9% which was mostly derived from the group's retail business.

Passenger movement was 6.8% higher than the corresponding period last year, in which the international and domestic passenger movements increased 2.6% and 11% respectively.

For the six months ended June 30, MAHB made a net profit of RM170.1mil compared with RM132.8mil from a year ago. Revenue was up 24% to RM1.26bil from RM1.02bil for the first half of its financial year ending Dec 31. Stripping out the construction revenue, the consolidated revenue for the six months ended June 30 was higher by 6.4% at RM927.5mil.

The group saw its airport operations business grow 5.4% as well as a 19.6% growth in the non-airport operations business. Positive growth in the airport operations was driven by a 16.3% improvement in the retail business.

Passenger movement for the six months under review were 12.6% higher than the year before, in which the growth for international passengers was 13.5% while domestic passenger growth was 11.8%.

While MAHB has forecasted passenger growth of some 8% to 9% for this year, Faizal said the airport operator may achieve double-digit growth in passenger movement.

“Another trend we used to see at KLIA and the low-cost carrier terminal was 60% of the passenger movement came from domestic flights while the balance was from international flights. But now, both domestic and international passengers account for 50% each, thus proving that KLIA is increasingly becoming an international hub,” he said.

MAHB expects another two to three new airlines to start flying into KLIA. Faizal added that with Malaysia Airlines now part of the Oneworld alliance, the airport operator had started talks with British Airways and Australia's Qantas Airways about both airlines possibly re-looking at flying into KLIA.

“That will help us make KLIA a stronger hub but we will leave it to the airlines to make the relevant announcements,” he said, when asked if the airlines had given a timeframe in wanting to resume flights to Kuala Lumpur.

MAHB in talks with BA and Qantas on using KLIA
By JEEVA ARULAMPALAM Tuesday August 16, 2011
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/8/16/business/9305672&sec=business#13134956197591&if_height=649

PETALING JAYA: Airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is still in talks with British Airways and Qantas Airways on the possibility of both airlines mounting flights to KL International Airport (KLIA), a decade after these airlines suspended flights to KLIA owing to a lack of network connectivity here.

“At the moment, discussions are still on-going,” MAHB chief financial officer Faizal Mansor told StarBiz yesterday via a text message.

Last month, Faizal told reporters that both airlines were considering the possibility of flying into KLIA, following Malaysia Airlines (MAS) joining the Oneworld alliance.

British Airways and Qantas had yet to respond to separate e-mails sent to them on the possibility of either resuming flights to KLIA.

While MAHB stands to benefit from new airline mounting flights to KLIA, a local aviation analyst said that British Airways flying to KLIA was not expected to hurt MAS and AirAsia X as it would have its own set of clientele.

“Government officials and government-related companies are required to use British Airways' services similar to what we see for MAS whereby government-linked companies and officials in Malaysia use MAS' services,” said the analyst.

He added that British Airways' customers would continue to use the airline's services due to loyalty and mileage programmes.

While British Airways would fly the London-KL route, analysts said Qantas was likely to start with the Sydney-KL route first.

Meanwhile, a foreign analyst said that market talk had it that British Airways, Qantas and MAS had formed an alliance within the Oneworld alliance, whereby the three airlines would cross-sell each other's tickets on their respective websites. This deal was said to be executed by former MAS managing director Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin.

“For instance, a British passenger who wants to fly from London to KL and subsequently to Penang, can do it seamlessly through this alliance basically British Airways will offer a ticket for the passenger to fly from London to Penang, utilising the MAS network. While a code-share is typically executed for a single route (point-to-point), this alliance between the three airlines builds on connectivity and network,” he said.

This alliance would allow Qantas and British Airways' passengers the opportunity to book flights to South-East Asian destinations via the MAS networks.

“With MAS, British Airways' passengers can access destinations such as Phuket, Surabaya, Bandung, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The Middle Eastern carriers don't fly to such destinations so it will be easier for these passengers to utilise MAS' network,” he said.

However, should there be such an alliance between the three airlines, it remains to be seen if it will be executed considering the latest reshuffle at MAS, where new board members were appointed and an executive committee put in place to oversee the running of MAS, while the hunt for a new managing director is under way.

Both British Airways and Qantas ceased flights from KLIA in 2001 and 2000 respectively, as the airlines said it made more commercial sense to redeploy capacity to where demand was much better served Singapore's Changi Airport.

Qantas axed flights to KLIA as it opted to use Singapore as its South-East Asia gateway while other international airlines said in order for KLIA to be a regional hub, it needed to compete more effectively with Singapore and win airlines at the expense of Changi. For instance, Qantas currently has two direct daily flights each from Melbourne to Singapore and Sydney to Singapore.

However, KLIA has increasingly grown as a regional hub in the last decade, with international passenger numbers increasing from 12.7 million in 2001 to 23.8 million international passengers last year. While KLIA has attracted more foreign airlines to mount flights to KLIA, part of KLIA's popularity is also due to low-cost carrier AirAsia group mounting flights to regional destinations.

Meanwhile, MAHB clarified in a media statement yesterday that passenger service charge (PSC) in Malaysia was not linked with the construction cost of airports or terminals built locally.

It cited the example that the PSC remained the same despite the relocation of airport operations from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang to the brand new KLIA in 1998.

“The PSC and other aeronautical charges are determined solely by the Government as enshrined in the Civil Aviation Act 1969. Therefore, it is the sole prerogative of the Government to reduce, maintain or increase aeronautical charges which MAHB abides by,” MAHB said, adding that it was not at liberty to revise aeronautical charges without the Government's approval.

Talks of revamp at MAHB fizzle out
By BK Sidhu Saturday August 20, 2011

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2011/8/20/business/b_pg18statistic.jpg

THERE has never been a dull moment for airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB). Just as the landmark collaboration between Malaysian Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia Bhd was revealed, it seemed sure that a massive board and management shake up was imminent at MAHB to drive the agenda of making Kuala Lumpur an aviation hub.

However, it seems there has been a change of heart. It is believed that Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, who has been holding the reins at the airport operator since 2003 as managing director will remain until his term expires in June next year.

Speculation of a board and management revamp at MAHB was premised on the fact that its largest shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Bhd was keen to reshape the country's aviation industry to prepare it for the next phase of growth.

“There are a lot of movers and shakers.... the AirAsia/MAS tie-up is a significant merger and acquisition activity. What it means is that Malaysia wants to become the next aviation centre in Asia. It is certainly stirring up a lot of uneasiness among its peers,” says Standard & Poor's aviation analyst Shukor Yusof.

According to sources, there is no plan to rattle the status quo at MAHB at least for now.

MAHB has raised passenger service charges and aircraft landing and parking charges that should augur well for the airport operator but it is not favourabe with travellers who have to contend with rising prices of goods and services.

But there remains one major issue - the perceivedly-slow pace of development of the new low cost air terminal or KLIA2. Though the commercial opening date has been fixed for October 2012, there are doubts in the market place on whether the deadline will be met.

There's of course also the pressure from AirAsia boss Tan Sri Tony Fernandes for more low-cost carrier terminals to be built and for the completion of KLIA2 to be expedited.

The question is - would a revamp and infusion of new blood in MAHB allow it to respond faster to players like AirAsia which has time and again proven to bring in the traffic and tourist volume? And would it be able to further drive the Government's agenda to boost the tourism sector.

KLIA2 takes off

SEPANG: Passengers using the KLIA2, when it is completed next year, will walk across a 300m pedestrian bridge to get to the satellite building to catch their low-cost flights.

The skybridge, the first of its kind in Asia, is among the unique features of the country's new main low-cost airport that is being built at a cost of RM2.8bil.

Expected to be completed in about 13 months, KLIA2 will also have one of the country's largest shopping centres. With 70,000 sq m of shopping space, it may well be the biggest shopping area for an airport in the region.

KLIA2 is just 1.5km away from the main KLIA compared to the more than 11km distance between the main terminal and the present LCCT.

MAB: 34 million passengers at KLIA and LCCT by year-end

SEPANG: Thirty-four million foreign and local passengers are expected to use KL International Airport and the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) here by the end of this year, Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd general manager Muhammad Suhaimi Abd Mubin said.

He said the target was an increase from the 29 million passengers recorded at both airports last year. "It is estimated that 55% of the number would be recorded at KLIA, while the other 45% at LCCT," he told reporters after attending Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB) Aidilfitri open house Sunday.

Muhammad Suhaimi also anticipated that international passengers would make up 70% of the 34 million-target.

Right now, 50 airline companies are operating in KLIA with 750 inbound and outbound flights recorded daily. BERNAMA

figures are incorrect as reported. last year KLIA/LCCT recorded a rather impressive amount of appx 33.8mil (if i am not mistaken). the reporter didnt do a good job in questioning Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd general manager Muhammad Suhaimi Abd Mubin in rgds to the recorded and projected nbr. or perhaps the GM himself is ignorant of last year's statistics.

I've read it in a few Aeroflot releases. Basically Kuala is on a radar for Aeroflot. There is not exact ETA of service start but we all know that it will happen as soon as the widebody fleet starts expanding. And that is right around now. 8 - or 9 more A333s and as well as 16 B773s with deliveries starting in 2012.

years back, if i can recall correctly, Aerofloat used to fly in to KLIA. it suspended the service due to poor load factor and most importantly due to the economic meltdown (aka The Tomyam Effect) then.

after a while the Msian authority coaxed the airline as well as a few others to resume the services. in this instance, if i can recall correctly again, Aerofloat responsed as 'why should we when your national airline is not flying to Moscow?'

anyway, that was years back. it will be gr8 to see Aerofloat coming back to KLIA again ;)

UPDATE:

MAHB privatises RM530m KLIA2 complex to WCT JV
Written by Joseph Chin of theedgemalaysia.com
Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:31
http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/business/193340-mahb-privatises-rm530m-klia2-complex-to-wct-jv.html

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is privatising the CONSTRUCTION [] and financing of the integrated complex at KLIA2 under a 25-year concession period to Segi Astana Sdn Bhd – joint venture between WCT BHD [] and MAHB. The construction cost is RM530.3 million.

WCT said on Thursday, Sept 22 it had signed a concession agreement with MAHB and Segi Astana for the privatisation of the construction, development and financing of the complex on a build-operate-transfer model.

WCT said Segi Astana was currently a unit of WCT Land Bhd, which in turn was a wholly-owned subsidiary of WCT.

Segi Astana’s authorised share capital will be increased to RM150 million from RM100,000 while its paid up would be RM106.06 million from RM2 when the commercial operation of the complex starts.

Under the agreement, WCT Land will hold 70% or RM74.24 million of Segi Astana’s paid-up and MAHB 30% or RM31.818 million.

MAHB granted WCT the sole and exclusive right and authority during the concession period to build and manage the complex and also arrange for any necessary financing.

The complex comprises of a transportation hub for the Express Rail Link, buses, taxis, car rental services and private transport. It would have a commercial complex consisting of a shopping mall with net lettable area of approximately 350,000 sq ft; and car parks with 6,000 parking bays.

The construction cost of the project is about RM530.3 million to be funded through external borrowings by Segi Astana and the balance by shareholders equity.

“The concession shall be for a period of up to 25 years and may be extended for a further period of 10 years at the option of the concession company. The commencement date of the concession is Aug 1, 2011.

“Upon the expiry of the concession period, Segi Astana shall transfer the integrated complex including the building, fittings and relevant documents at no cost to MAHB,” WCT said.

WCT said in consideration of MAHB granting the concession to WCT, Segi Astana would pay MAHB a lease rental of RM31.818 million.

The lease rental shall be net off against the subscription price payable by MAHB in respect of their 30% equity holding in Segi Astana. MAHB may also be entitled to royalty payments.

“As KLIA2 will be a dedicated international terminal for low-cost carriers and in view of the expected increase in demand for low cost air travel, the prospects of the concession company are expected to be positive. The revenue from the project will further broaden and strengthen WCT group’s future recurring income base,” it said.

Figurati! :okay:

I like a lot this airport, that is in my top 5 along with HKG, SIA, BKK and PEK.

One question, when it is ready KUL 2? Who will use? Malaysia Airlines?

Where takes you that automatic train inside the airport? (which drives me crazy, cool)

^^ Predominantly Air Asia will use KUL-2.

The trains run between the main terminal and the cross-shaped satellite terminal between the two runways.

So, we can say that KUL 2 will be a terminal for low cost airlines?

No, predominantly is not exclusively. When KUL becomes busier and busier, flights/airlines might be evenly devided between both the terminals, though that is not to be expected soon.

When they say KLIA 2 is that the empty plot next to the satellite terminal? If not, does anyone know when that will get built?

Im just afraid that once LCC terminal gets built, KLIA will be deserted. Last time I was there, it was empty, whereas the LCC terminal was bustling.

The empty plot next to the current sat bldg is the site for another satellite terminal. KLIA2 is in its frantic pace of being built. You can check some of the pics posted previously. Current MTB and its sat bldg (KLIA) will not be deserted upon the completion of KLIA2. The present LCCT looks bustling as it is now considered small and cramp. It is only designated for a capacity of 15mil pax per annum. With the completion of KLIA2, with its huge space and spaciousness, I doubt it will look that ‘bustling’ as the present LCCT.

SEPANG - Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd.

To Moscow direct, with Transaero

Transaero is the sole airline from Russia to operate to Kuala Lumpur with one flight weekly.

http://www.btimes.com.my/articles/PORTRUS/pix_middle

KUALA LUMPUR: Air travellers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport can now fly to Russia direct with the debut of Transaero Airlines.

Transaero, Russia's second largest airline made its maiden landing in KLIA on Saturday. It is the 57th airline serving Kuala Lumpur.

Transaero is the sole airline from Russia to operate to Kuala Lumpur with one flight weekly. It flies every Friday from Moscow and on Saturdays from Kuala Lumpur using Boeing 777 aircraft with 306 seats configuration.

According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the Moscow-KL direct air link is a result of relentless marketing effort and Tourism Malaysia's aggressive promotion.

Transaero has been operating charter flights to KLIA for the last few years. The airline has created sufficient market demand on this route for it to start scheduled operations.

"Transaero service opens a new market for us and we wish them all the best for their operations to Kuala Lumpur. We look forward for the airlines to stabilise and strengthen their operations to Kuala Lumpur and hopefully, increase their frequency to KLIA soon," MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said in a statement.

He added that it is MAHB's close cooperation and relationship with Tourism Malaysia as well as the Ministry of Transport's pro-business policies that brought the airline from Russia to Malaysia.

"I anticipate that this strong partnership will continue to reap more success in terms of attracting more airlines to Malaysia."

Transaero's service will provide convenient access between Kuala Lumpur and Moscow and expand two-way trade, investment and tourism for both countries.

In 2011, besides Transaero, KLIA has welcomed Air Koryo and Lion Air, while Egypt Air made a comeback to KLIA.

Transaero operates to major Russian cities and is also the leading carrier to Kazakhstan.

Its network covers many European destinations such as Austria, Cyprus, England, Germany, Greece, Israel and Spain. Transaero also operates flights to major Asian countries like China, Japan, Thailand and India.

Good stuff: The Martell Millesimes Collection is available
exclusively at duty-free outlets in KLIA.

MALAYSIA’S premier airport retailer, Malaysia Airports (Niaga) Sdn Bhd has made available the first expression of its Millésimes Collection exclusively at its duty-free outlets in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Malaysia Airports (Niaga) Sdn Bhd general manager Muhammad Fawzy Ahmad said, “We are proud to not only be the only retailer in Malaysia to offer this unique chance to experience the Millésimes Collection, but also to be one of the two retailers in the Asia-Pacific region to make this available.”

The Millésime 1968 is carefully selected by Cellar Master Benoit Fil from Martell’s oldest cellar built in 1833, the Chais de la Coquille.

It is a rare single eau de vie from the Grande Champagne area, a land known for its powerful and structured eaux de vie.

“We would like to invite duty-free travellers to take the opportunity to savour this exclusive collection, especially at the start of the new year,” he said.

KLIA2 concessionaire awards by July
By LEONG HUNG YEE Monday February 6, 2012

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2012/2/6/business/p5-faizah.JPG

Faizah: ‘It is a very unique concept.’

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will be awarding the concessionaires for 225 outlets at KLIA2 by July this year for a scheduled opening in April 2013, according to senior general manager commercial services Faizah Khairuddin.

“We are currently accepting tenders for 27 outlets until Jan 26. We're doing it zone by zone and we will award by July this year because everything has to be ready for opening by April 2013. Some 500 people have expressed interest to operate at KLIA2,” Faizah told StarBiz.

Of the 225 outlets, 118 lots have been allocated for retail offerings, 81 lots for food and beverages (F&B) and 26 lots for services.

Faizah said MAHB received overwhelming response from interested parties for space at KLIA2 when it conducted a brand preview presentation for KLIA2 last month.

“We received very good response at our KLIA2 brand preview and had to limit the number of participants to 800 because the room could not accommodate more people,” she said, adding that the tender would be done in an open and transparent manner.

Faizah explained that MAHB already had an idea of what range of shops it wanted to operate at KLIA2, for example coffee-based products in certain areas. She said MAHB had set up a website (www.klia2retail.com.my) to provide all the details needed for tenderers to forecast their respective business plans.

Faizah said that apart from the airside retail outlets at KLIA2, MAHB was also working on the details for a landside mall in front of KLIA2. However, the landside mall will not be a duty-free one. She said the mall would be an integrated complex where it would be a point of convergence.

Airports are divided into landside and airside areas where the former is basically the area before immigration while the latter is the area after immigration.

“We will anchor it with retail offering. It is very a unique concept ... not just an airport. We will have both airside and landside malls for passengers,” she said.

Faizah said the landside mall would have contemporary duplexes retail offering and it would be good for its concessionaires. She said the ground floor of the outlet could be a bookstore and there would be a cafe.

“We are maximising space as part of our plan to drive our non-aeronautical revenue. KLIA2 is commercially driven,” she said.

MAHB no longer just rents out space but also supports and increases the vibrancy of its airport for concessionaires.

“Under our Runway to Success business plan, we target revenue to hit RM3bil by 2014, of which RM2bil will be contributed by non-aeronautical while the balance of RM1bil will be from aeronautical.

“Currently, non-aeronautical revenue is about 55% with the balance 45% from aeronautical,” Faizah said.

She said that in a traditional airport model, non-aeronautical revenue accounted for about 30%, with 70% from aeronautical. “We want to reverse the equation.”

Growing its commercial services such as rental of space, car park and airside transit hotel is one of the ways for MAHB to increase its non-aeronatical revenue, which has been growing in recent years.

In the financial year ended Dec 31, 2003 (FY03), MAHB's non-aeronautical revenue stood at RM486mil but it has since grown significantly to RM842mil in FY10.

According to the KLIA Aeropolis Master Plan, MAHB has identified 2,730 acres out of a total of 22,156 acres in KLIA for commercial development.

MAHB also targets to achieve RM185.5mil in property development revenue by 2014.

MAS, AirAsia consider forming regional service centre
By EDY SARIF Tuesday September 27, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) are discussing various issues for collaboration that could see the former utilising MAS maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services to make Malaysia the region's premier aircraft servicing hub.

AirAsia group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said if that happened, a mega MRO between MAS and AirAsia could challenge Singapore's MRO.

“If you put the volume of MAS and AirAsia, it becomes a mega MRO that can become a real competitor to Singapore's MRO,” he told reporters on the sidelines of Khazanah Megatrends Forum 2011.

Apart from MRO collaboration, both parties could also become big players in the area of training using the training capacity of both airlines.

“Malaysia can become Asia's biggest trainer of pilots by harnessing the strengths of both airlines which have excellent records of pilot and engineering quality,” he said.

He added that AirAsia was also looking at other areas of collaboration with MAS, such as in cargo and catering to help cut costs and maximise revenue for both airlines.

“AirAsia does not use LSG (Germany-based LSG Sky Chef is an in-flight service provider) for catering but together, we may get a much better deal from LSG and better quality. So, these are the revenue, cost and new business opportunity ideas,” he said.

Fernandes said more details on cost and revenue joint ventures with MAS would be announced soon.

Reiterating the need for branding. he said both parties needed to ensure MAS and AirAsia were globally recognised.

He was very optimistic about the collaboration (between the airlines) becoming successful despite receiving some sceptical comments from certain parties.

The collaboration came about after Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the major shareholder of MAS, announced that it would take up 10% stake in AirAsia while Tune Air Sdn Bhd, the investment vehicle of Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, would own a 20.5% stake in MAS under a share-swap deal.

Both Khazanah and Tune Air have agreed not to sell their shares for a period of 30 months under the share-swap deal.

On top of the share swap, a collaboration agreement was signed simultaneously by MAS, AirAsia and AirAsia X, which would effectively see MAS concentrate on being a full-service premium carrier, AirAsia on being a regional low-cost carrier (LCC) and AirAsia X, a medium-to-long haul LCC.

MAS-AirAsia merger: Potential RM1b synergy

KUALA LUMPUR: A tie-up between Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) and AirAsia Bhd could save both airlines as much as RM1 billion a year, a local research house estimated yesterday.

Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said by realigning capacity to match market demand, both airlines can save as much as RM300 million to RM400 million.

It estimated that roughly 70% of the combined capacity of MAS and AirAsia is deployed on overlapping routes, which undermines yields, load factor and ultimately profitability.

“Unfortunately, these irrational practices are a permanent feature due to both airlines’ adamant quest for domination,” Maybank IB said, adding that there is surplus capacity on certain routes.

MAS-AirAsia rationalisation to dent KLIA growth
Posted on 7 February 2012 - 08:06pm KANG SIEW LI

PETALING JAYA (Feb 7, 2012): The route rationalisation by Malaysia Airlines (MAS), AirAsia and AirAsia X is expected to put a dent in passenger air traffic growth at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang this year, industry observers say.

They pointed to the national carrier's suspension of eight routes including those from KLIA to Dubai, Surabaya, Johannesburg and Rome, as part of its new business plan to turn around by 2013.

Last December, MAS had said it would cut back its available network capacity by 12% in 2012 for an expected gain of RM220 million to RM302 million, trimming its capacity in the long-haul segment to focus on the medium- and short-haul routes following a share swap deal with AirAsia.
Apart from the eight international flights out of KLIA, MAS has also suspended or will suspend four regional routes from Kota Kinabalu to Osaka, Perth, Tokyo and Seoul.

AirAsia X, the budget long-haul affiliate of AirAsia, had also announced plans to withdraw its flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Paris and London from KLIA between Jan 31 and March 30 this year.

"It is not surprising why Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is projecting only a 6.6% increase in passenger growth this year, despite recording a double-digit growth of 10.6% in 2011, as MAS and AirAsia X make deeper cuts to their international flight schedule and foreign airlines are not putting additional frequencies or launching new destinations to and from KLIA as fast," an industry observer told SunBiz.

Last week, MAHB told Bursa Malaysia it was projecting passenger movements at KLIA to grow by 6.6% based on the country's indicative 5-6% gross domestic product growth.

"The passenger growth would, in general, depend on Malaysia's and global economic performance, in particular the Asia-Pacific region," it had said, but did not elaborate.

Passenger air traffic at KLIA has slipped to single-digit growth since August last year. According to data released by MAHB, the number of passengers passing through KLIA grew only by single-digit percentages — 9.7%, 8.7%, 5.6%, 6.4% and 5.6% in August, September, October, November and December, respectively, from a year ago.

In contrast with figures in January-July 2011, monthly passenger traffic at KLIA posted double-digit growth, ranging from a low of 10.5% to a high of 16% from the same period in 2010.

Nevertheless, KLIA managed to show double-digit growth of 10.6% to 37.7 million passengers for the full year 2011, thanks to healthy passenger growth in the first seven months.

MAS took over the jet services of its subsidiary Firefly in October last year, which saw several domestic routes from KLIA to points in Sabah and Sarawak, namely Sibu, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, suspended.

However, MAS will reintroduce the Kuala Lumpur-Sandakan direct flight on Feb 18.

KLIA2 to feature more self-service options
Published: 2012/02/10
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/bashh/Article/#ixzz1lzcgnx2c

SEPANG: The new low-cost carrier terminal at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, or KLIA2, will feature more self-service options for passengers to manage their travel than the current one.

This is in line with a global trend in which airports and airlines are increasingly moving towards self-service, said Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, chief executive officer of airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

MAHB data shows that 65 per cent of passengers at the current low-cost carrier terminal, also in Sepang, use self-service compared with 25 per cent at the main terminal building.

"I think all airports, even airlines, are moving towards this. It saves a lot of money for us, it reduces manpower and the passengers themselves want this," he said after his keynote address at the Future Travel Experience Asia 2012 conference here, yesterday.

The self-service for passengers using KLIA2 include common-use self service kiosks and baggage drop, home-printed boarding pass and baggage tag, as well as free wifi and Internet kiosks. KLIA2 is expected to be completed in April next year.

Passengers, especially the younger and more information technology-savvy ones, want better control of their travel experience to ensure that it is hassle-free. Input from surveys and focus groups conducted by MAHB have indicated this, Bashir said.

"They really want everything at their fingertips, especially the younger ones ... and that means self-service," he remarked.

The conference, hosted by MAHB, drew some 300 executives from airport operators, airlines and technology providers around the world, focused on improving the end-to-end travel process for passengers.

Bashir felt that all airports in Asia should eventually be self-service ones. "In time to come, yes. If you have huge (passenger) traffic, then you may have problems doing this, but in the long-term, you have to."

Mike Chew, Star Alliance's director for airport services and reservations, said Asia is ready to embrace self-service.

"It's no longer a question of 'if' Asia is ready ... it's a question of how and what formula it will take. Some of the initiatives it adopts may not mirror the West," he said at a panel session on the topic.

Paul Behan, head of passenger experience at the International Air Transport Association, noted that self-service in Asia had progressed significantly over the years. "Talk that self-service is not very extensive and resisted in this region is 'nonsense'," he said.

MAHB in talks with Russian airline
By Vasantha GanesanPublished: 2012/02/21
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/itourgap/Article/#ixzz1mwo9wCeN

MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is in negotiations with Russia's S7 Airlines to commence flights into Kuala Lumpur.

It is understood that the airline will either depart from Novosibirsk or Khaborosk.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen, who revealed this at a press conference recently, said that this would add to Transaero Airlines flights from Russia which started to ply the Moscow-Kuala Lumpur route once a week from December 30 last year.

Transaero will increase its frequency to twice a week from March this year.

Ng, who was announcing the latest tourist arrival figures and projections for 2012, said that Malaysia hit a record tourist arrival number of 24.7 million in 2011, but missed its target of 25 million.

The ministry has also not made a higher projection than it did for 2011. Both the ministry and Tourism Malaysia have set a very conservative and exact 25 million target for 2012, largely attributable to flight cancellations by Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia X.

"As we were looking at 2012 targets, we have to look at accessibility. It is with great sadness (to note) that MAS is reducing flights and AirAsia is reducing flights," Ng said.

MAS has announced numerous route cuts, including Dubai and Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa, while AirAsia X has announced the cancellation of flights into Mumbai and New Delhi in India, and London and Paris in Europe.

"We also do not see much improvement in other airlines flying here. That will be a very big challenge for our tourism (targets)," she said.

"If there is no accessibility, it will be very hard to increase (arrivals)," she said.

She added that Malaysia's tourism projection for the year would have been much better if the flights are not cancelled by both airlines.

Nevertheless, she said the country hopes to narrow the gap as new airlines make their way here and existing ones increase frequencies.

It was also reported that she plans to persuade the airlines to resume their flights but admitted that it was beyond her jurisdiction as it is a business decision.

S7 Airlines is part of the Oneworld Alliance, which MAS will also be joining.

Meanwhile, the ministry said Jin Air from Seoul, South Korea, is bringing in chartered services into Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It will operate 19 flights from December 31 to March 3 using a B737-800 aircraft.

Interestingly, MAS will cease the four times weekly Kota Kinabalu-Seoul flights from today.

KLIA2 on course for completion in April next year
Tuesday March 6, 2012
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/3/6/nation/10859811&sec=nation

SEPANG: The construction of KLIA2 is on schedule to meet its target completion date in April 2013, said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said the new low-cost terminal was now 45% completed “as per schedule”.

He was speaking to reporters after accompanying Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha on a visit to the KLIA2 construction site.

“This is the second time the Minister is visiting the site and we have updated him on the progress,” said Bashir.

The construction work for KLIA2 started in October 2009.

It is now estimated to cost be**tween RM3.6bil and RM3.9bil, at least 80% more than its provisional budget of RM2bil.

In November last year, MAHB had cited additions to the new terminal for passenger comfort as reasons for the cost increase.

These include a shopping mall, an automated baggage handling system and significant upgrades in terms of floor space, the length of runways and the number of aircraft stands at the terminal.

Currently, MAHB is in the process of calling for tender bids for the new terminal’s commercial space.

According to Bashir, the response from retailers is “very good”.

Upon completion, KLIA2 is estimated to have the capacity to serve up to 45 million passengers annually – three times the capacity of the existing LCCT.

KUALA LUMPUR: The ERL train extension from KLIA to KLIA2 will be ready by October this year, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

"The train journey between KLIA and KLIA2 will take about three minutes. The extension will likely see the volume of ERL passengers doubling," he added.

The ERL services, which include the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit, carry about four to five million passengers every year.

Kong said the project to extend the line to the new low-cost carrier terminal totalled up to RM100mil.

"The project is currently running smoothly and about 25% complete. It is scheduled be ready by Oct 31 this year while the KLIA2's construction is expected to be completed in April 2013," he told reporters after visiting the construction site of the proposed rail extension here Thursday.

He added that the extension was necessary in line with the development of the new terminal as it will enable passengers from KL Sentral to reach the KLIA and KLIA2.

"I hope that when KLIA2 is in full swing, we will be able to make ERL services available 24 hours a day to cater to flight arrivals in the wee hours of the morning," he said.

Currently, ERL services run for 21 hours a day, taking a break between 1am and 4am.

Kong also commended the ERL services for achieving "on-time" performance of 99.83%.

The project to extend the ERL line started in July last year and covers 2.14km.

In 2010, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced plans to build the KLIA2, the world's first mega terminal for low-cost carriers.

He said it was expected to boost the nation's tourism industry by attracting more airlines and visitors.

Wish Sydney would get their act together and build a decent airport to serve as a gateway as opposed to adding bits and pieces to the current congested airport...

^^ Well, why not, I've seen some occasions where Air Asia uses the airbridge. Such as in Changi. The last time I flew with Air Asia from Surabaya, Indonesia, it also utilize air bridge.
