Nice!! Impressive airport! It has 2 runways am i right, Baq??

baqthier

it began it's operation in 1998. It may look old in photos since for some parts, the ceiling uses the wood color to make it look somehow tropical and suits the environment. The airport is divided into 2 parts, the main building and the satellite building. The main building is for check-ins and domestic flights, while the satellite building is for the international flights. People now can check in their tickets and luggage at KLSentral in Kuala Lumpur city centre which is more than 70km away from the airport and take a 25-minute train ride there :)
Yes Ryan, it has 2 parallel runways each 4000m by 60m and are 2.5km away from each other. :)
Did you also know that KLIA is the second airport in the world after Munich to have a special chamber to defuse explosives as part of its sophisticated fire-fighting systems?

Its definately one huge mofo of an airport. Like really massive. Brisbane Airport reminds me of it a little bit, but its about 10 times smaller. The one thing I find most annoying about KLIA is the trains to the satellite terminal. In this regard, I find Chep Lap Kok much more convenient and efficient. But KL's trains looks pretty damn cool.

That control tower looks really tall, how tall was it again. I thought somewhere in the 120m or so. What's the tallest in Europe I wonder. I think its the Schiphol tower with 100m.

Insomniac > That is not a tunnel. It is actually a train station (Putrajaya Station if I m correct). :D

Chunkymonkey and Baqthier > It is not going to be a mall. They are planning a huge exhibition and convention centre there. It will be the only Convention and exhibition centre with a dedicated 747 runway in the world! It is called National Exhibition and Convention Centre if I remember correctly....:colgate:

is it just me...or is it that every single time i visit KLIA, it seems like an empty, waste of money and space??

Or are they just planning for the future??

it's part of a 30-year masterplan, definitely it is for the future. Plus, the city, Putrajaya close to the airport is growing and new urban areas too. And it is also aiming to have 25million passengers a year. BTW, it has already served as a world class airport and won several awards. In 2001, it handled 14.6million, which is higher than 2000 which was 13.2million :)

The current configuration of the airport is for the timespan of 30 years (might include a second satellite terminal opposite the current one). After the final phase of development there would be 4 satellite terminals, 2 Main building terminals, 1 VIP terminal and 2 external airport hotel buildings. The grand masterplan is to served for 100 years of expansion. :)

The reason why the airport is 'empty' is because that the airport is designed in such a way that even at its peak period (I've seen its peak period), the airport will not look congested.

Yes KLIA is so much more beautiful in the flesh than in these pictures the floors and marble, the check ins and shops so well blended in and the rainforest in the international airport perfect.

When I was there the train was under construction and it was a 1 hour drive to KL.

Yes the airport does feel under-used at times but id rather have space than be crowded like at JFK or Heathrow.

KLIA is the best airport in the world.

KLIA to go on promotion drive

By M. HAFIDZ MAHPAR in Sepang
THE KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang is to embark on an aggressive marketing campaign to turn itself into the preferred shopping destination in the region.

The multi-million-ringgit programme, to be launched by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik tomorrow, is an extension of the KLIA comprehensive marketing initiative called Integrated for Ease which kick-started in April with the aim of making it a regional aviation hub.

According to KLIA shopping ste-ering committee head Syed Ahmad Syed Salim, the campaign is built on two promises: real value and real style.

“Compared with regional competitors, we do offer value for money although there is a perception otherwise. We want to dispel that perception,” Ahmad told Star Business in an interview in Sepang.

“In terms of style, we have not only a fashionable building but also well-known fashion brands. Not many people know that the KLIA has the world’s biggest Tie Rack outlet. We even have fashion restaurants, including the only Cheers pub (made famous in the 1980s TV sitcom) in Asia and the only Sbarro (an Italian restaurant) in South-East Asia,” he said.

The campaign has three main objectives: to turn the KLIA into a shopper’s paradise by offering exciting shopping attractions and incentives, adding value and excitement to the flying experience by rewarding travellers, and increasing the average dollar spent on retail and food and beverage in the KLIA.

The shopping theme will change every quarter. It will begin with The Art of Fine Dining (October-December 2002), followed by Sporting Passion (January-March 2003, in line with sporting events to be held then, including the Formula 1 grand prix and the Tour de Langkawi) and Spring Romance (April-June 2003).

A lot of on-ground promotions are planned. In the 1st quarter, colourful glass murals – depicting, among others, a diamond, chocolates, and fork and knife (denoting fine dining) – will decorate departure gate holding lounges. The airport will also be dressed up with banners on pillars as well as with giant ribbons across the ceiling.

KLIA shoppers stand to win prizes such as a TD2000 sports car, a Perodua Kelisa and a Jaguar X-Type 2.5. Visitors and travellers can get a scratch and win card for purchases worth RM250 in a single receipt. For single or multiple receipts totalling RM450, shoppers can spin a wheel for a chance to win prizes such as the Kelisa and TD2000.

There will be three grand draws for shoppers who make a minimum RM500 purchase, with the main prizes being a Jaguar, a holiday package and a jewellery set.

To make sure travellers were well aware of the promotions, Ahmad said, the KLIA would station deejays on-site and would be passing out brochures and leaflets.

And prices of KLIA retail outlets’ products, which are mostly duty-free anyway, may get cheaper

the airport is designed to service 100m pax arrivals annaully so the airport is built on a area that have some much space for expansion to accommodate the increase..... the areas is very big indeed but whether it will become the largest airport in the world in the future remains to be seen. what exactly do u mean by largest interms of floor space, arrivals???

take note the new bkk airport is designed to accommodate the same no of arrivals in the future

I remember reading somewhere that KLIA is the largest airport in terms of total land size. The current Main Terminal Building, Bunga Ray Terminal (VIP terminal), Satellite building, Control Tower, Pan Pacific Hotel and the Air Cargo terminals is only about a quarter of the entire airport plan. ;)

Just to let ya guys know how big is the land size: The Sepang F1 Circuit is built and owned by Malaysia Airports Berhad (the owner of KLIA). It is built on the airport land. :)

The cost might be high to Malaysians but if you compare it with any other airport-rail link, ERL is actually very cheap. This is based on my personal experience and also knowledge on other rail services like those of HK, Heathrow, Gatwick and Sydney...... ;)

i just visited KLIA last month. i realized that KLIA is very quiet, not as busy as other airports at US. The design is super cool and futuristic, i consider KLIA as the best airport in the world. Partly because i am the malaysian too. :) anyway, i had a bad experience at LAX when i was on my way back to Missouri (last month). the line for student visa entry is terribly long and i missed 2 flights at the same day because i have to queue up for 2 & half hours line. and, i spent like 40 hours from KLIA to St. Louis, US... well, i talked too much of my stories. can anyone tell me who is the designer/architect of the KLIA? i might go back to malaysia on May. I just like KLIA.. so nice..

KLIA has 2 big runaways(4000m long) and it will grow within 30 yrs to come. There is a need for height to see the entire stretch and the take-off/landing activities.

As I have mentioned in another thread, 4000 metres is common. Changi is 4000 too. The height is obviously more to do with the entire area of the airport rather then the length of runways. And well....if you have the resources, why not add a bit more height to have another reason to trumpet to the world? :P

Anyway PhiloSurfer, a computer chip dosent get more advanced by being bigger......its the other way round. hehehe :D

Like what Huaiwei had said, the height is relative to the airport's large area that it covered. The current airport structure is only about a quarter of its fully expanded size and I believe it would be wise to built something that is future-proof rather than to have a short control tower and then built a taller one when need arises.

BTW even the current control tower had to be assisted by an apron control tower (yes another smaller control tower further away) which serves the air cargo flights.

Now KLIA has one satellite building but the future expansion would see it quadrupled to 4 satellite buildings and another main terminal building. That would require a lot of land and currently KLIA is the world's largest airport in terms of land size (to enable future expansion and to prevent housing and towns from creeping too near the airport).

hope that clears up the air...... ;)

szehoong,

That is my point precisely. It is not that this particular height is required, even for future requirements. It is that in Malaysia Boleh, everything must be superlative. It has to be the tallest in the world. My point is, an unnecessary tall tower in an airport is inviting accidents to happen. That's why I mentioned the biggest IC - to show how the pursuit of world record can lead to silliness. This is not pure speculation. If you just look at all the monuments erected in MY in the last decade, you will know what I mean. Tallest this, longest that, biggest this and what have you. Very soon they will come up with the world's biggest bonsai plant.

Er...PhiloSurfer, a super tall control tower...if it causes a plane to crash into it...it is probably suffering from severe power failure...:D

I get wat u mean lah....I remember there is this longest shopping mall over the river, for instance, and I dunno if it is existing already or not...plus other stuff that have slipped out of my consciousness. But to me, so long that they are economically viable, and are practical, there is nothing wrong with going for something monumental. Ie...if you build a super tall and can fill all the offices, u build a big mall and it becomes teeming with tenants and consumers, then why not. Some might be controversial, but well...that is all in the spirit of advancement and development, and basically of stirring the local people that certain limits are there to be broken.

I remember how when the OUB Centre was built in Singapore, and the then Westin Stamford was built, they were important phsychological markers for a still developing Singapore, and still are to many of us now. Every city developing too fast (within a generation) probably needs something to tell her citizens to wake up and do something. We have done it before, and so will they. If the whole of SEA sees more of such developments, and graps the attention of the money-rich foreign investors...we need not complain. :D

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)

K.L. International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang is designed and built to be an efficient, competitive and world-class hub airport for the Asia-Pacific Region. It replaces the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport at Subang as the main gateway into the nation. The new mega airport, complete with the latest technology and state-of-the-art facilities, aims at providing maximum passenger safety, comfort and convenience. It is unique because it has within its boundaries all that is needed for business, entertainment and relaxation. In short, KLIA is a destination in itself.

ARCHITECTURE
In 1998 when the first passengers arrive at the new KLIA, at Sepang, they will experience glimpses of a green Malaysia through the unique architecture, enjoy the world renowned Malaysian hospitality and feel the ease of modern hi-tech conveniences that reduce waiting time.

Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, the KLIA is a spectacular feat of construction which combines futuristic technology, Malaysian culture and the rich, tropical splendor of its natural resources, and is regarded as one of the most modern and sophisticated airports in the Asia-Pacific region. It will incorporate forms and systems suggesting advancement and modernization while at the same time, support Malaysia's cultural history.
