View Full Version : Is this forum dying?
The Urban Politician October 8th, 2004, 02:32 AM I am shocked at how few replies there were to threads today. It has been diminishing over time. I look forward every day to interacting with you guys, but it seems like nobody is really saying anything any more. Not only that, but there are rarely ever new pics.
I guess SSP is where all the action is
NWside October 8th, 2004, 03:32 AM This forum was long dead until you and a few other's started posting, SSP is where the action has always been at.
bobablob October 8th, 2004, 03:39 AM Sorry, what is SSP? Can you provide a link? Thanks much.

geoff_diamond October 8th, 2004, 06:44 AM I wouldn't say it's dying. It's just in a bit of a lull. When I first joined back in *whatever month that was* I would go days without seeing a single new post. Then, over the summer, it picked up to a feverish pitch. There just isn't a whole helluva lot going on right now. I wouldn't be overly concerned :)
Rivernorth October 8th, 2004, 10:22 AM When i joined almost two years ago, the Chicago forum was dead. It was only this summer that it got really active, so if anything... it being active is the anomoly, the inactiveness has for long been the norm. hopefully it wont return to that though... i like it better as it is now :)
geoff_diamond October 8th, 2004, 06:54 PM Well... we're the only ones who can control the action here. It's not like it can die without our permission.
24gotham October 8th, 2004, 08:45 PM I have noticed a drop off recently.
I check in almost daily... Lately, I haven't had enough time to kill at work and haven't been at home as much in the evenings to take the time to respond unless I feel a real passion on a topic.
Perhaps it will pick up again as we roll into winter, and there isn't anything else to do.
Evan October 8th, 2004, 08:54 PM Part of it could be the fact that it seems like the damn thing loads slow as hell these days. When I first started coming here a few months ago, no issues. Lately, takes the thing forever to connect. I think they need new squirrels to power the wheels in their servers.
New Jack City October 8th, 2004, 10:32 PM Yea, months ago this forum was really, really quiet then as summer came, great threads were started up and discussion was flowing nicely. I'm proud that this forum is one of the few that actually has sophisticated, intelligent and informative discussions.
Lately there's been a drop off, but I guess it's just part of the cycle. Like geoff said, ultimately it's the forumers which determine the fate of a forum.
simulcra October 9th, 2004, 04:13 AM Well, school draws me into its womb, so I have far less time to be spent perusing the boards.
But I mean... this is where I like to go when I'm surfing. I'd say about 90% of my 600 posts came just from a summer in teh Chicago forum.
The Urban Politician October 9th, 2004, 05:47 AM ^I guess I have not been on this forum as long as many of you, and given the context that you guys have described, perhaps I was wrong. It is good to be talking to all of you guys and sharing our thoughts about Chicago and its current rennaisance.
Perhaps more and more people have joined this forum just for that reason. Maybe 10 years ago (granted we assume the internet still existed), a forum like this would not have been conceivable. Now, with a rejuvenation of spirit, progress, and growth that has permeated cities (central cities, my friends, not the business as usual suburbia that has invaded north america for half a century) like Chicago (a city that could be the greatest example of this "comeback"), a degree of fascination and excitement exists when contemplating the future.
I think all of us are very thrilled about what is happening, and all of us are thrilled to see Chicago become a new kind of city--a city that strives to no longer just be a major industrial or commercial center. It's a city that wants it all--to be a grand, world-class, cultural, livable, and beautiful world of its own (a title that very few places on earth hold). I can tell from talking to you guys that it's really not just about the skyscrapers (although they are fun to talk about)--it's about something deeper. We admire this city's fortitude--being the lone, dark, American metropolis on the great lake.
TPX October 12th, 2004, 12:54 AM I also wouldnt say it is dying, ive been busy with school, so im lucky if i can get on once a week.
Steely Dan October 12th, 2004, 01:14 AM one of the problems is that SSC is the "new" forum to us old-timers, it still kinda feels like the red-headed step-child in comparison to the much older and more established SSP. those that have been regulars of the skyscraper interent world for more than 3 or 4 years all started out at SSP, so there is an allegiance to the original that SSC will never have.
SSC is fun and all, but given the amount of idiot children that infest this forum, it's more of an entertainment outlet for me than anything else. when i want to talk to other adults, i go to SSP.
geoff_diamond October 12th, 2004, 01:35 AM My only beef with SSP is its lack of a dedicated Chicago forum. I don't wanna have to root through 50 threads about Grand Rapids to find one about Chicago.

i noticed that too. Actually, the forum under "projects and construction" has a thread titled "everything over 300 feet" that has some real chicago gunners. People who are totally up to date and have pics post there. But you're right--Chicagoans are sort of drowned out in SSP
geoff_diamond October 12th, 2004, 03:45 AM Thanks for the tip! I'm gonna go check it out right now.

yeah, that's the "chicago boom rundown" thread that i started years ago. it's in its 4th incarnation now. just go to the first page of that thread and you'll get a whole lot of info on the chicago skyscraper scene.
that's why i put a link to the thread in my signature, so that you all would now it's there. just click the linik below in my sig.
The Urban Politician October 12th, 2004, 04:07 AM ^ I knew you were the same person as Steely! You are a moderator at SSP, right? I love that list you have. People like you give skyscraper-loving a good name :)
Steely Dan October 12th, 2004, 04:18 AM yep, i'm a moderator over at the old SSP, i've been a member there for over 5 years now (whew, time flies).
and thanks for the compliments on the boom rundown list. as i said, it's been something i've been keeping up to date for a couple years now, just sort of a running tally to keep track of all these myriad scraper projects going on in chicago.
The Urban Politician October 12th, 2004, 05:12 AM ^which one is older, ssp or ssc?
What was the forum like 5 years ago? Surely it was much, much smaller, right? Were the topics of conversation as broad as they are now?
The Urban Politician October 12th, 2004, 05:17 AM one of the problems is that SSC is the "new" forum to us old-timers, it still kinda feels like the red-headed step-child in comparison to the much older and more established SSP. those that have been regulars of the skyscraper interent world for more than 3 or 4 years all started out at SSP, so there is an allegiance to the original that SSC will never have.

^idiot children?
I'll have you know that I am 28 years old and have a highly professional job.
I prefer SSC because there is a dedicated Chicago forum that allows for lots of interesting socio-political discussion. I have noticed that in SSP (where Chicago is concerned), most of the discussions focus on skyscrapers alone. That is fine, but a lot of us here really like Chicago for its beauty and urban-ness, as well as its quality of life. Those, along with skyscrapers, are what we discuss here. It's just different in style, but not childish.
Besides, I have encountered plenty of "idiot children" during my forages into SSP

SSP is much older, i think it started back in '96 if i am not mistaken. i joined SSP in '99. SSC is only a little over 2 years old now. before SSC, there was the "world skyscraper forums" which was only around for about a year or so, unitl it was merged in with the euroscrpaers forum and the ozscrapers forum and the like to create this big old massive congolmerate of sub-forums known as SSC.
as for the "idiot children" remark, i wasn't talking exclusively about the chicago sub-forum, but rather SSC in general with clowns like silverlake and the myraid anti-america euro-trash kids and what-not. the chicago sub-forum is actually pretty good regarding mature, intelligent discussion, for the most part. still, generally speaking, SSC "feels" like the inferior forum to me, because it's the new one, and i have been part of the original for so much longer. sometimes, you can't beat an original.
itsnotrequired October 12th, 2004, 05:35 PM SSP seems to have more activity but I like the SSC forum becuase it is devoted to Chicago. I could be looking in the wrong place but the closest category to Chicago I could find is the Midwest forum. I don't want to sift through a bunch of stuff about Indianapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, etc. when all I'm really interested in is Chicago.
geoff_diamond October 12th, 2004, 06:02 PM My sentiments exactly! I can come here, and I'm instantly in a place that's all Chicago, all the time. Sure, having lived in Detroit for several years I don't mind keeping tabs on what's going on over there, but, I certainly don't want to have to look through it all to find what I really want to know... and that's what's going on here.
As far as the intellectual level of the conversation (and its participants) goes... I've honestly got no complaints. Surely, things get more heated than they should on occassion, and people act like iditios sometimes... but, this is sure to happen when emotionally charged topics like race and class are being discussed.

So why even bother going to SSP for Chicago info? Tell everyone to come over here! :D
24gotham October 12th, 2004, 09:26 PM My only beef with SSP is its lack of a dedicated Chicago forum. I don't wanna have to root through 50 threads about Grand Rapids to find one about Chicago.
I think the mix of threads are quite interesting (read: entertaining), Threads like this one are of great importance!

geoff_diamond October 13th, 2004, 07:19 AM LOL! So Looper, you goin on Saturday?
24gotham October 13th, 2004, 09:09 PM I will most definately be there... (Looking at the weather reports, I will be in a brown suede jacket. Burrrrrr.... High of 45....)
geoff_diamond October 14th, 2004, 07:35 AM HOORAY FOR WINTER!!!! WRAAAA!!!! I'll most likely be in my usual garb... a UIC hoodie.
24gotham October 14th, 2004, 09:10 PM Hmmm, Perhaps my hoodie would be more appropriate.... it say' "Loop"
geoff_diamond October 15th, 2004, 06:28 AM Ahhh!!!!! You got a neighborhoodie?!?!?! I've always meant to order one of those!
The Urban Politician November 30th, 2005, 03:28 AM I was digging through the archives and encountered this thread.
I can't believe that a little over a year ago this forum actually seemed to be dying. I don't think any of us back then had any idea this forum would blossom and explode the way it did.
Now we're like a global news network--we have editorialists, in-your-face front-line journalists (BVictor, Chicago Shawn), photographers (krzycho, Victor & Shawn, geoff diamond), analysts (edsg), etc etc
I can't believe how far this forum has come. The number of new people who have joined since this thread was started is ASTOUNDING
pottebaum November 30th, 2005, 03:32 AM It is amazing. You guys make loving Chicago really fun.

oh, ok, lol. I was reading through the last page of this thread, and I didn't pay attention to the year they were written, and I was thinking "gosh, I really thought I had posted plenty of pictures...."
i_am_hydrogen November 30th, 2005, 04:15 AM ^LOL, the same thing just happened to me. I was reading these posts, totally surprised that people thought this forum was dying. Then when I saw a quote from "sharptent," I realized something was off and looked at the date...
wickedestcity November 30th, 2005, 04:15 AM its funny , i joined this forum the same month as you (after much lerking) and when you posted this thread i had taken a few mounths break . so iwas one of the non posting members back then. now i frequent this site so often you guys are prob sick of posts.

I love this. Before I discovered this forum, I couldn't discuss my Chicago-philia with anyone I didn't want to bore to death and call me crazy. This is one of the best aspects of the internet--allowing little niches of people who care about a certain thing to come together regardless of geography. Its wonderful.
Chi_Coruscant November 30th, 2005, 04:42 AM This is the best forum in SSC! Long live the Chicago forum!

Is the Chicago forum a barometer for the city of Chicago itself? It seems like there's more momentum in Chicago today than there was a year ago. So, the analysts should start looking to this here forum the next time they're reading the weather.

Better: Chicago forum should be the ONLY barometer for developers, architects, real estate investment consortium, and future transplants, even the real estate analysts in tv news in measuring the Chicago's real estate activity.
NWside November 30th, 2005, 07:50 AM This forum was long dead until you and a few other's started posting,
Well it was dead, it reminded me of what the Los Angeles forum has become... The only thing keeping that section going is the Chicago people and Silverflakes celebrity reports.
Chicago3rd November 30th, 2005, 10:58 PM I think several people keep posting the same question...just different ways. I can never figure out if they are trying to create a sore spot or just don't get Chicago.
How many times can we be asked about our weather (by formers....who have been on here long enough to see it asked over and over again.....same for the "poor image we or the country has about Chicago" which again and again is not the truth...at least not on the forum.

Hmm. I wasn't using 'weather' literally.
Azn_chi_boi December 1st, 2005, 03:16 AM I was going to post in this thread last month to have like a 1 year anniversary thingy...
Long live the Chicago forum... this thread kind of represent Chicago, from a "dying" city to a new more attractive city!
Chicago3rd December 1st, 2005, 08:33 PM Hmm. I wasn't using 'weather' literally.
Hey...wasn't directed at you.
"weather" 1. The state of the atmosphere at a given time and place, with respect to variables such as temperature, moisture, wind velocity, and barometric pressure.
It gets brought up about every two or three weeks......
Arch December 1st, 2005, 09:13 PM SSP is where you will find all things american but not much on anywhere else. The reverse could be said of SSC
