Tanzania, the land of Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and the Serengeti
èđđeůx July 8th, 2011, 01:03 AM Kempinski to push ahead with Zanzibar Stone Town plans
It was learned from a source in Dar es Salaam that Kempinski Hotels, probably to make up for the recent loss of a management contract for their resort on Zanzibar, is continuing to seek exemptions and approvals for a 5-star hotel in the middle of the ancient Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Tanzania has of late come under intense scrutiny over the way the pending application for the same status to be accorded to the Eastern Arc Mountains was withdrawn, and also the pending battle over uranium mining in the Selous Game Reserve, another UNESCO World Heritage site.
Only two weeks ago, the government in Dar es Salaam wrote to UNESCO assuring them that their plans for a highway to cross the critical migration paths in the Northern Serengeti were off the table and an alternative route would be explored, a declaration much under dispute though be sections of the conservation fraternity who distrust the wording of the letter.
Meanwhile in Zanzibar, Kempinski’s relentless drive to obtain approval for their mega project right in the heart of a culturally-important area keeps raising eyebrows not only among conservation and historical preservation circles but also in civic society, where questions of the true identity of the developers or those "really hidden behind them" are being raised.
Adds this correspondent in closing: Remember, a reputation painstakingly built over long periods, is a balancing act, and the abyss, as it is seen here, is precariously close by and easy to fall into.

Tanzania tourism will enter yet another tough business test at the end of this month when Kempinski Hotels franchise ends its management of two luxury tourist facilities in the East African safari country.
Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski in the central business district of Tanzania's capital city of Dar es Salaam and Bilila Lodge Kempinski in Tanzania's leading wildlife park of the Serengeti will cease to be managed by Kempinski Hotels franchise by the end of this month.
From the first day of August of this year, the two luxury tourist and business properties will continue to be operated as international luxury accommodation establishments under ASB Tanzania Limited, the partner company with Kempinski Hotels franchise.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and thanks to ASB Tanzania for the relationship in these two international luxury hotels through the past five years,” Ulrich Eckhardt, Kempinski's Regional President for Middle East and Africa said.
“We wish them success with the two properties for the future. As one era ends, another begins as we have four openings planned for this year in the Middle East and Africa,” he added.

Tanzania government sets stage for next battle with conservationists
News just broke that no sooner had the Tanzanian government been compelled by intense global criticism and threats of decampaigning its tourism industry to write to UNESCO and give a written binding undertaking that NO highway would be constructed across the critically-important migration paths of the great herds of wildebeest and zebras, that they were set to start yet another battle over the equally UNESCO World Heritage site protected Selous Game Reserve.
The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, the Hon. Ezekiel Maige, was quoted today in media dispatches after an interview with the BCC Swahili Service in Dar es Salaam that uranium mining in the reserve, not by law as strongly protected as a full-scale national park, would most definitely go ahead, in the process displaying a lack of understanding of crucial issues which speaks legends.
The Minister claimed that mining would only involve about 1 percent of the park's overall area of nearly 55,000 square kilometers, requiring only minor boundary corrections and that the income accrued from mining would help government to pay for the upkeep of the park.
Giving a figure of an estimated value of US$200 million the selected mining company would make per year from the mine, he then went on to state the Tanzanian government would earn US$5 million from the project each year, a measly 2 ½ percent ONLY of the estimated proceeds going into the investors' pockets. Seemingly unaware of this grossly disproportionate figure, he went on to claim that uranium mining would not increase radiation levels any more than already registered while the metal was still underground, an astonishing statement for a supposedly well-informed and well-briefed government minister.

èđđeůx July 8th, 2011, 01:11 AM South African Airways cuts airfares to attract more tourists to Tanzania
n a friendly gesture to mark fifty years of Tanzania's independence from Britain, South African Airways has announced to cut down airfare for travelers from the United States to Tanzania.
Sources from the airline's management said travelers and tourists flying between New York (US) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) will have to pay discounted and reduced airfares.
Special airfares will be applicable between August and mid-December this year, a period that covers three months in which Tanzania will be celebrating 50 years of self-rule from British colonial rule.
Truman said that South African Airways (SAA) recognized that there was high demand among travelers flying to and from Tanzania during the peak months before this African destination mark its 50 years of independence amid activities, which will attract an inflow of people from different nationalities.
In line with reduced airfare, SAA said it will make a same-day connection from JFK International Airport in New York to Dar es Salaam through its hub in Johannesburg, South Africa, hoping to encourage more tourists to experience Tanzania especially at such a festive and historic time.

Bill Gates visits Tanzania's famous Serengeti National Park
American billionaire and chairman of Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates visited Tanzania's leading wildlife park Serengeti National Park in northwestern Tanzania during his few days tour of Tanzania where he inspected health projects funded by his foundation.
During his visit to the wildlife-rich Serengeti National Park this week, Mr. Gates and his wife, Melinda, met Tanzanian president Mr. Jakaya Kikwete on their way to inspect malaria research at Bagamoyo on the eastern coast of Tanzania.
Mr. Bill Gates visited Tanzania several times on his holiday missions without media alert. It was a surprise when the media noticed his visit through a statement from Mr. Kikwete's press office, though the couple made several visits in Tanzania without any coverage.
The couple had made several tourist holidays in Selous Game Reserve in the southern parts of Tanzania, Zanzibar Island, and Serengeti National Park during the past years.
No more details were released about Mr. Bill Gates' visit in the Serengeti, but senior officials from the Tanzania National Parks, which manages the park, said such a visit was an important opportunity to the park by its prominence.
The 14,763-square-kilometer park is more than an expanse grazing land on the endless plains. The park is the leading tourist attraction site in Tanzania, pulling in over 150,000 foreign tourists each year.

kiligoland July 8th, 2011, 07:19 AM Tanzania`s tourism income increased from USD862m in 2006 to USD1.25bn last year, equivalent to 31 per cent.
Acting director of National Tourism College, Arusha campus, Eunice Ulomi said the increase was a result of 782,699 visitors received last year.
He said this during the college’s first graduation ceremony where 53 students graduated in various tourism courses.
Ulomi said the income was a result of government and stakeholders’ efforts to promote the country’s tourism abroad in order to attract more foreign visitors.
"Due to continued growth of the sector, the government, in collaboration with the French government has built a new tourism college in Dar es Salaam, which will teach hotel management at diploma level,” he said.
He told the graduates in cookery, reception, baking and food services to discharge their duties smartly in order to promote the country’s image abroad.
For his part, Arusha district Commissioner Raymond Mushi, who was the chief guest said, most youths in the region are engaged in tourism, which is their money spinner.

kiligoland July 15th, 2011, 03:18 AM WORLD fourth richest person Mukesh Ambani through his conglomerate, Reliance Industries, intends to invest heavily in Tanzania's air transport and hospitality industries.
Mr Ambani revealed this at the end of talks with the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr Ezekiel Maige, at Serengeti National Park (SENAPA) on Sunday.
The tycoon ended his three-day tour of SENAPA on Sunday.
"I will be sending a special team to look into areas of investment here because Tanzania is becoming a very potential area for business," Mr Ambani told journalists.
He said he was particularly targeting luxury hotels chain here to boost the growing tourism industry.
Mr Ambani is at the moment investing over US $8 billion in the construction of a five-star property, the proposed 'Delta Hotel' in Nairobi, but considers to build several high class hotels in Tanzania.
In Tanzania, Reliance Industries owns GAPCO oil. "We are going diversify our business by expanding into tourism sector as well," pointed out Mr Ambani who praised Serengeti as 'God's gift to Tanzania'
He pledged to spearhead the establishment of direct air flights connecting Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro with Mumbai and other Asian destinations including Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo.
He said the flights would open up the local tourism industry to Asia and Middle-East countries.
"Mr Ambani has promised either to do it alone or involve both the Tanzanian and Indian governments to link their important cities over the air to boost tourism and other trading or business opportunities between the two countries," added the tourism minister, Mr Maige.
Ambani (53), is an Asian business magnate and the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, described to be the largest private sector enterprise in India and one of the largest private sector conglomerates in the world.
His personal stake in Reliance Industries is reported to be 48 per cent.
By July 2010, he was named the richest man in Asia and the fourth richest man in the world with a personal wealth of US$29.0 billion.
On 29 October 2007, a strong rally in the Indian stock market and the appreciation of the Indian rupee boosted the market capitalization of all Reliance group companies, making Mr Ambani the world's richest man for a while in that year, with net worth climbing to US$63.2 billion, leaving Bill Gates behind at around $56 billion.
According to Forbes Magazine forecasts, he is expected to regain the title of the richest man in the world in 2014

bantugbro August 4th, 2011, 10:45 AM Tanzanian hotel website now the world’s biggest
When booking a holiday abroad, most travellers will check popular websites such as TripAdvisor and may look for prices with well known businesses such as Expedia, Agoda or Hotels.com. But these sites may no longer be the first stop for travellers heading to Tanzania.
Hotels.co.tz, launched in April 2011 has just added their 350th hotel – a fantastic landmark after being up and running for just three and a half months. Their nearest competitor, TripAdvisor, has just 280 hotels listed. In addition, hotels.co.tz is making great strides towards dominating the search engines so that people searching for hotels in Tanzania will naturally come to the website.
Already ranked in position 1 in Google for Tanzania, and position 2 in Google.com for the phrase “Tanzania Hotels” the website is receiving thousands of visitors every month and sending scores of bookings every day (for free) to a wide range of hotels - from small guest houses to large resorts. For such a new website to already be beating out large companies, who have massive marketing teams and budgets, is an impressive achievement in itself.
Scott Bowler, Marketing Director of hotels.co.tz says “This is just the beginning; we want the website to have well over 1,000 hotels listed and to be generating tens of thousands of enquiries every month. Our unique business model means that it costs the hotels nothing to generate these bookings. It’s a ‘no-brainer’ for the hotels to be listed, keeping us ahead of the competition.”
This type of innovation and business acumen is showing that Tanzanian businesses can lead the way online and give established companies a run for their money. Their plans don’t just stop with Tanzania – they have just launched http://www.findhotels.co.ke and are planning to do the same for Kenya that they have done for Tanzania.

kiligoland August 28th, 2011, 04:17 AM New York show raises number of travellers to Ngorongoro
US tourist arrivals at Ngorongoro Crater have dramatically increased after about 20 local public and private tourism firms took part in a New York Times Travel show to sensitise potential travellers in North America on Tanzanian attractions.
This was revealed yesterday by Asantiel Melita, principal officer in the Tourism Department (Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority), who was in the Tanzanian delegation to the US to promote the country’s tourist destination there.
“As a government institution, we appreciate the way the campaigns in the US have been going on because from January to July, Ngorongoro alone has received about 99, 532 tourists from the US,” he said.
“In July this year, we received about 40,122 tourists from the US, while in February we managed to get only 2,360 tourists,” he added.
“This is the result of the good work of our marketing efforts in the US. The conservator says he has continued to receive more bookings from US travellers showing their interest to visit Ngorongoro Crater and other parks in Tanzania,” he said.
During the show, NCCA organised a raffle for the show attendees aimed at promoting “Destination Tanzania” in the US.
Conducted by NCCA chief conservator Bernard Murunya, it was open to all participants.
Among 155 entries entered, Lauri Lyons from the US became the lucky winner. She would pay a visit to Tanzania in the company of a friend to see the East African nation’s great tourist attractions.
Meanwhile, Karen Hoffman, president of Bradford Group based in the US, who is also a TTB representative there added that the New York Times Travel show held recently brought success to the 20 public and private tourism firms which attended the event.
Led by the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), the delegation included representatives from the board, officials from Embassy of Tanzania in the US, Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa), Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCCA) and tourism officials from the private sector.
Others included Ahsante Tours and Safari, Mbalageti Safari Camps, Limited, Nanuri Safari Company, Matunda Cultural Tourism and Safari Tanzania Limited, Zara Tanzania Adventures, Equitanz Resorts, Basecha Tours and Moivaro Lodges and Tented Camps.
He said during the event, the Tanzanian delegation managed to promote the country’s tourist attractions in a move that analysts say would help the country to receive more foreign tourists.
According to Hoffman, in the New York Times Travel show Tanzania was featured on the Focus on Africa Destination seminar for travel agents and on the African stage.
On the other hand, Vacation 2 Africa also gave away two tickets to Tanzania on Ethiopian Airlines, she noted.
Deogratias Malogo, Research and Development Manager and head of the TTB delegation noted; “The American market is our number one source of tourism and judging from the flurry of activities at our booth and bookings, it looks like America will continue to be a growth market.”
According to Malogo, “Tanzania has a very proactive TTB office based in New York City which enables us to build partnerships with airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways that benefits both travel agents and their clients by providing special packages and fares.”
TTB now has over 1,600 graduates of the Tanzania Specialist Training Programme for travel agents which include a luxury travel component.
Malogo was accompanied by TTB representatives Bernard Murunya who is NCAA chief conservator, board member Lucas Selelii, and NCAA tourism officer, Asantael Melita.
Others were Tanzania National Parks’ Menangsilig Salekwa and Seth Mihayo, and Suleiman Saleh who is second secretary at Tanzania ‘s Embassy in the US.
From the private sector the delegates were Ahsante Tours and Safari’s Stella Swai, Mbalageti Safari Camps Limited’s Shamez Nizar and Vandy Sandhu, Nanuri Safari Company’s John Benedict Malago, Matunda Cultural Tourism and Safari Tanzania Limited’s Unambwe Zephania Kaaya, Zara Tanzania Adventures’ Mariam Adam, and Equitanz Resorts’officer, Evelyn Gaudance.

kiligoland October 3rd, 2011, 04:35 AM Ngorongoro lodge bags coveted travel award
Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is this year’s winner of the prestigious World Travel Award-2011 as Tanzania’s Leading Safari Lodge.
The announcement was made recently in Sharm El- Sheikh, Egypt during the 18th Annual World Travel Awards.
At a colourful ceremony held at Soho Square, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge emerged winner for the third year running since 2009, having scooped similar awards in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
The World Travel Award serves to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel, tourism and hospitality industry with 180,000 industry professionals from around the world who all participate in the voting process.
Located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge has been in business since 1996, under the management of Serena Hotels.
The area covers 8,292 square kilometres running from the Serengeti National Park to the north and to Karatu, a town due south of NCA.
The NCA is designated as a multiple land use area where both conservation of natural resources and controlled human development are integrated.
To remain in line with the conservation of natural resources, the construction process of Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge ensured that no trees were cut down.
Serena Country Sales Manager, David Sem said instead pathways were roped off to keep workers out of the bush, and fines were levied against anyone ‘trespassing’ beyond the ropes.
The dimensions and location of the dining/lounge area were even altered to accommodate a particularly beautiful old fig tree. “Today it continues to keep up with the local traditions and culture while providing high standards of facilities and service and the true Tanzanian hospitality,” Sem noted.
The main geological attractions include the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s biggest intact caldera with an area of 304 square kilometers and 610 meters depth. Other geological features of particular interest are the Empakai Crater, Oldoinyo Lengai Mountain, among others.
The population of wildlife in their thousands, Maasai pastoralists, Tagoga agro-pastoralists and the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers communities with their rich cultural resources make NCA the place to visit.
Indeed, the NCA receives large numbers of visitors every year and naturally, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge hosts the majority of them.
Also to note is the Maasai community that is settled around the lodge. Historically, it’s believed that the Maasai moved into the Serengeti and Ngorongoro areas in the 17th Century after traveling hundreds of miles from the northern tip of Africa. The Maasai are truly unique as they have firmly held onto their social structure while others had no qualms about discarding theirs.
“We at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge have recognized the Maasais as truly special people and have supported them in various ways including supporting their education…” said the lodge manager Dismas Simba on a telephone interview.
“We funded the construction of one of the few schools in this area known as the Oloirobi Primary School, and we have also provided direct employment for casual labour and provided a ready market for their local produce,” he said.

kiligoland October 4th, 2011, 02:28 AM Maige: More tourists coming for Uhuru anniversary
As Tanzania prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the independence of Tanganyika, Natural Resources and Tourism minister Ezekiel Maige has said tourism continues to show tremendous growth with more visitors flocking in.
This was revealed recently at the Africa Travel Association’s (ATA) Sixth Annual Presidential Forum which took place at the Kimmel Centre for University Life in New York University.
Karen Hoffman, president of Bradford Group based in the US who is also the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) representative there told The Guardian yesterday that Maige was in the US where he led a high-level Tanzania tourism delegation to encourage investment in infrastructure, hotels and lodges, as well as meet with tourism partners.
Their focus was to invite them invest to Tanzania and attract US travelers to see the country’s exceptional blend of scenery of wildlife and human culture, she said.
In an effort to increase tourism, Maige and his delegation met with Terry Dale, president of US Tour Operators Association (USTOA) whom he discussed various issues relating to tourism sector and how they can collaborate to bring tourists from that part of the world.
Besides, Maige was also in US to attend the sixth ATA forum, the event which was sponsored by TTTB and Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa).
The major goal of the event was to provide a unique opportunity to promote travel and tourism to African and discuss the key issues facing tourism development on the continent and to raise ‘Destination Africa’ profile on the global tourism stage, she said. The delegation then proceeded to Washington for the third annual diaspora council of Tanzanians in the US, which culminated into a gala dinner to mark the 50th anniversary of independence.
The minister said the ministry is working closely with tour operators to create special 50th anniversary packages that would be diverse and affordable, enabling many people to experience the country’s achievements come December 9, 2011.
Tourism is among the country’s fastest growing economic sectors, with 782,669 tourist arrivals in 2010, representing 9 per cent up from that of 2009.
In the US, the number-one source of tourism, tour operators reported a tremendous increase in bookings in 2011, for this year, and for 2012 and 2013.
The result of this growth is an increased demand for expanding hotel capacity as well as flights.
As the country celebrates 50 years of a peaceful and stable democracy, Tanzania continues to be a prosperous and investment friendly country, he said.

In a statement issued in Dar es Salaam on Monday, Travelstate’s Managing Director, Mustafa Rajani said the agency which was established last year, has extended its reach to Nairobi and future plans are to expand to other EAC capitals.
“Travelstart website not only offers cheap flights but also a variety of airlines to choose from and after booking one can pay by cash, bank deposit, through M-pesa, or credit cards,” said Mr Rajani.
However, he said the company does not sideline potential travellers who can’t access computers and buy their tickets online as there is a sales outlet that caters for traditional travel segments.

“Apart from cheaper flight options, Travelstart website which is accessible 24 hours throughout the week is an important medium for those who want to book a flight on Saturdays or Sundays when travel agents close shops”, he said.
He said the company is coming up with a promotion campaign whereby anyone who books a DAR-Mwanza or DAR-Dubai flight will be offered one night hotel accommodation in Mwanza or Dubai complimentary.
In recent days, the country’s aviation industry has witnessed the arrival of several international airlines including Fly540, Oman Air, Emirates Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Egypt Air, Rwanda Air and Qatar Airways.

TZBoy December 11th, 2011, 05:19 AM PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has challenged education institutions to make every effort to provide first-rate training to students in a quest to meet acceptable international standards which demand provision of outstanding services.
Speaking at the opening of a new National College of Tourism campus in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, President Kikwete said good services provided by stakeholders in tourism and other sectors make good names.
"It is true that we need funds to advertise our wealth in wildlife, but good services extend reputation across the continents. It is necessary to have teaching curriculum, trainers and graduates who satisfy the international market demand," President Kikwete said.
Giving an example of a detrimental attitude among entrepreneurs which is closely related to the danger of taking things for granted, the president said it was not proper to sit back assuming that since everyone knows that Mount Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, tourists would just come automatically.
The president called for additional efforts in classified adverts. "We need our graduates to be equally competent. I have been to several countries only to discover that there are hotel attendants from East Africa but none from Tanzania. Training institutions must produce highly qualified graduates".
Again, good services would not be separated from integrity, said the president. Every one has to abide by professional ethics.
"If, for example, a visitor forgets a valuable property in the room and comes back looking for the lost item, honesty would lead one to keep safe the property and hand it over to owner instead of asking the visitor: "why not taking proper care of personal belongings," he explained.
Earlier, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ezekiel Maige, said in July 2004 the government signed an agreement with the French Development Fund (AFD) for the funding of construction work of a new college of tourism.
"AFD pledged 4.7 million euros and the government of France in 2008 added one million euros to enhance construction of the college. The aim is to make the college a centre of excellence, the first of its kind in East Africa. It is equipped with modern facilities," Maige explained.
The minister said the cost of the project was 7,725,529 euros. Out of the amount, the French government offered 5,770,377 euros and 1,955,152 euros were given by the government of Tanzania.
In this academic year 2010/2011 a total of 300 students joined the college pursuing studies at the level of certificate and diploma in cookery, hotel catering, room keeping (cleanliness) and reception.

kiligoland January 9th, 2012, 05:44 PM Tanzania ranked highly as tourist destination
By The Citizen Reporter
Dar es Salaam. A world renowned newspaper has selected Tanzania among 45 places for tourists to visit in 2012, saying: “Tanzania is coming into its own as an upscale safari destination”.
The New York Times said in its January 6 edition that Tanzania emerged number seven out of the 45 selected places to go in 2012.
Reacting to the revelation, the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) managing director, Dr Aloyce Nzuki, said yesterday that the selection of Tanzania among the 45 favourable destinations was a positive thing.
“We have strategies in place aimed at making Tanzania among the most favourable places to visit,” said Dr Nzuki, promising to give more details today. In its article, The New York Times quoted East African travel specialists, including Hippo Creek Safaris and Abercrombie & Kent, as saying that for the last several years, the number of tourists going to Tanzania has been edging up.
“But it wasn’t until several violent attacks on visitors to neighbouring Kenya that the numbers really took off, as Tanzania started to absorb skittish Kenya-bound safari seekers,” said the newspaper.
It said not that Tanzania is coasting along solely on Kenya’s troubles; it always had Mount Kilimanjaro, after all.
“And now other attractions are being discovered, too — places like Gibb’s Farm, a small lodge from which guests can hike to the Ngorongoro Crater area, a prime destination for big game viewing,” said the paper.
In addition, said The New York Times, the opening of exclusive safari reserves like the Singita Grumeti along the Serengeti plains and the upscale camps managed by Nomad Tanzania and Chem Chem are evidence that the country’s tourist infrastructure is becoming more sophisticated, perhaps even catching up to Kenya’s.
Apart from Tanzania, other African countries picked by The New York Times as a place to go in 2012 were Morocco that emerged number 26 and Uganda which emerged number 33.
Under its sub-title: Stability and sustainable tourism restore luster to Africa’s pearl, The New York Times said marred by the murderous regime of Idi Amin in the 1970s, Uganda remained largely off the typical African safari tour map.
“But after more than two decades of relative stability under President Yoweri Museveni, the country that Winston Churchill called the “pearl of Africa” is regaining some of its allure for tourists,” said the paper.
It added that while Uganda has not been without problems, including twin bombings in Kampala during the 2010 World Cup, some street clashes during political protests last year and a history of extreme antagonism toward gay people, it’s still considered one of the more stable countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
The paper said the country is perhaps best known to tourists as the home of half of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, and this year there are more opportunities to spot the elusive creatures.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority recently added two gorilla families to the groups it tracks on tours in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a Unesco World Heritage site in southwest Uganda, said the paper.
The paper said beyond up-close gorilla encounters, Uganda is also the source of the Nile, boasts mountains that are among the highest in Africa — the Mountains of the Moon in Rwenzori Mountains National Park — and offers formidable white-water rapids for thrill seekers.
The paper ranked Panama number one place to visit in 2012, saying it has been 12 years since Panama regained control of its canal, and the country’s economy is booming.
“Cranes stalk the skyline of the capital, Panama City, where high-rises sprout one after the next and immigrants arrive daily from around the world,” said The New York Times.

Stakeholders praise naval patrols along Indian Ocean

he Tanzania Society of Travel Agents (TASOTA) has hailed the government move to tighten security along the Indian Ocean saying that this would boost marine tourism this year.
Speaking in an emailed interview, the Society Chairman Moustapha Khataw, said their main concern had been the notable decrease in marine tourism particularly of cruise ships coming to Tanzania due to security in the Indian Ocean mainly attributed to Somali pirates.
“We are glad that our naval forces have been able to provide extra security and hope that this year we will see a couple of cruise ships docking at Dar es Salaam port,” he stated.
Service, Dr Hussein Mwinyi Tanzania has joined the international community in fighting piracy along the East African coast as Somali pirates continue to hijack commercial ships along the route.
Khataw said: "The government and those in tourism should join hands and move the industry forward, hence increase revenue and people's welfare."
According to him, cultural tourism should be promoted by allowing people to start their own businesses, as is the case in developed countries. He said regulation must be simple and easy in order not to discourage investors.
He urged Tanzanians to create the culture of visiting tourist attractions in various parts of the country.
He said Tasota in collaboration with the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), was planning to develop untapped tourism potentials in the Southern circuit this year.
“For 2012, our priorities are to establish a Secretariat manned by an Executive Secretary who will handle all aspects of TASOTA's operations and be a liaison officer with the Government institutions and Tourism Confederation of Tanzania (TCT),” he said.
A tourism expert identified as Athanas Bukosi said for the past 50 years Tanzania has achieved remarkable growth in various sectors including tourism.
“We have witnessed an increase in flight frequency, new airlines, more hotels opening up in many parts of the country which is a good indicator for economic growth,” he said.
Experts in the tourism industry are optimistic that cultural tourism resources would continue to serve as a base for Tanzania's tourism industry. Last year Tanzania received over 700,000 tourists, fetching just over USD 1 billion, making the sector the leading foreign exchange earner for the country.

Chief Editor Mrs AnneMarie Catellin le Du said Olduvai Camp’s latest face-lift of course played a crucial role in the competition, but above all, it was the unique spirit and atmosphere of Olduvai that made the difference, pushing it up the list.
“This is a true recognition of the passion and commitment of the Olduvai Camp owner, Mount Kilimanjaro Safari Club, and a much appreciated reflection of their long dedication to Tanzania,” Mrs Anne-Marie affirmed.
Receiving the award, MKSC Director Denis Lebouteux said: “We are very proud and happy to have been chosen for this prestigious prize. I would like to thank the journalists and the photographers who came and made a superb job.”
Mr Lebouteux was grateful to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for offering them a unique site, and all of MKSC staff, camp team and all those who worked hard in Arusha to make Olduvai Camp to be the world’s best lodge.
“It is their dedication and loyalty that has contributed to where we are today,” he said in a statement. An incredible harmony of shapes and colors, the Olduvai Camp stands out as a remarkable adventure in hospitality.
Set in an ideal landscape for history and art lovers, photo maniacs and walkers the Olduvai Camp’s exterior is sleek with a unique combination of an "industrial" and a natural look.
The stylish interior, however, is in direct contrast - offering a warm, inviting and comfortable feel.

kiligoland January 30th, 2012, 05:35 AM Tourism promotion drive in full swing
Tanzania`s tourism policy is undergoing intensive review meant to help the country reap the most from its natural resources, a cabinet minister said in Morogoro on Saturday.
Natural Resources and Tourism minister Ezekiel Maige revealed to editors from various media outlets that “internal talks” were going on to transform the Tanzania Tourist Board into an autonomous and therefore self-financing agency similar to the Tanzania Forestry Service Agency.
He said the changes were necessary because it was simply impossible for the sector to register noticeable progress or growth without higher levels of patriotism, seriousness and public awareness as well as appropriate changes in the country’s laws and civil service procedures and regulations.
“Tanzania has excellent potential in tourism lying unexploited, and this has for long made us earn peanuts from the sector and fail to fully benefit from the abundance of forests and wild animals our country is blessed with,” said Maige.
He explained that the government has identified the major problems and challenges ailing the ministry and the agencies under it and has begun fighting to solve them by implementing a multi-pronged strategy.
He admitted, though, that the going is very tough “as some of the major investors and other players in the sector are wealthy and influential people and institutions mainly from outside our country”.
The minister gave the factors inhibiting the development of tourism in Tanzania as including high travel and other costs tourists have to incur, restrictive nature of tourist attractions particularly in urban areas, and restrictions on the building of hotels and lodges in national parks and game reserves.
Other hurdles cited are corruption and contravention of laws in areas such as allocation and use of hunting blocks, disheartenment by national park and game reserve employees resulting from lack of incentives, and the fact that some of Tanzania’s own media outlets sometimes portray the country as not a precious enough destination for foreign tourists.
“Unfortunately, contrary to what is going on in many countries with a highly developed tourism industry, Tanzania has been doing very little to promote and develop its tourist attractions. There are times our own media report sporadic cases of violence so sensationally that they frighten tourists,” he noted.
He said Tanzania’s tourism promotion budget was among the lowest in Africa while competition was intensifying, adding that this has made the government decide to lay emphasis on the promotion of mass tourism “because continuing to harp on traditional attractions such as Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park won’t take us very far”.
Underlining the need for diversification in the tourism industry, Maige said it was wrong to assume that all tourists are filthy rich people and are interested in visiting world-famous landmarks.
He said he learnt important lessons from a recent World Tourism Organization meeting he attended in South Korea, elaborating: “Things like urban tourism can make a world of difference, but some parts of our cities and towns are endlessly dark and notoriously unsafe. Business is conducted only during daytime hours, which forces most foreign tourists visiting our urban areas to remain indoors most of the time instead of going out shopping for souvenirs.”
“The government is determined to reverse this trend, thus opening up business opportunities the Tanzanian private sector players could capitalize on. We are also determined to develop and promote our historical sites and beaches more vigorously,” he added.
However, he said he was saddened noting that the local hospitality industry was reluctant to support a planned tourism promotion fund.
He said it was strange that even putting up tourism promotional billboards at or near government-run facilities such as airports, “which clearly shows that even the public sector’s participation in the promotion of this crucial sector is abysmally low unlike in many other countries”.
The minister said it was important for Tanzanians to feel bad seeing that many foreign tourists enter the country aboard foreign flights, move around the country by foreign shuttle buses, stay in foreign-operated hotels and lodges and therefore spend relatively little money in Tanzania.
He called for closer cooperation between his ministry and the likes of TTB,Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa) and Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority in ensuring that the country’s wildlife and other natural resources become bigger money spinners contributing more handsomely to the country’s social and economic development.
Records show that Tanzania hosted some 295,000 foreign tourists in 1995, the number rising to more than 800,000 in 2009 and to over one million in 2010.
An overwhelming 76 per cent of these are said to have learnt about the country through on-line and TV advertisements or from previous visitors, and only 24 per cent from brochures found at Tanzania’s pavilions at international trade fairs.

Geza Ulole February 4th, 2012, 11:37 AM Sopa lodges to extend arm from Arusha to Zanzibar
By Staff Writer
Sopa Lodges, the tourism property chain running luxury hotels in both Tanzania mainland and Kenya, is planning to spread wings into the clove Islands of Zanzibar.
Sopa runs its Tanzanian operations (In the Northern Circuit) from Arusha City and now eyes both the Southern circuit as well as the Isles.
Speaking in Arusha, recently one of the Sopa Lodges officials, Mr Mehdi Jan-Mohammed stated that the company has also been awarded a certificate of merit by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) as an outstanding Tax-payer who topped the Hotel and catering’s sector at national level.
But on the company’s intended expansion to the Isles; “Tanzania is the best tourist destination in Sub-Saharan Africa, for having a diverse of products than any other country in the region,” he said adding that there was a need to be well-positioned to ensure that high-quality and competitive services are offered to tourists.
One of the Sopa Lodges in East Africa. Zanzibari is their next destination.
In Addition to Zanzibar, Sopa Lodges also want to invest properties in the Southern Highlands where there is also future tourism potential in terms of virgin lands and less-visited National Parks and in fact Tanzania’s largest park, Ruaha lies in the Southern Park.
Attracting over 750,000 foreign visitors per year, Tanzania’s tourism industry relies heavily on Wild Animals (Game) viewing in National Parks found on the mainland but the country is currently working to promote beach tourism which is already well developed in Zanzibar.
Sopa Lodges runs three properties in Tanzania’s Northern Tourism Circuit; one in Ngorongoro (Conservation Area Authority), while the other two are found in Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks respectively.
Sopa Lodges also operates in neighboring country of Kenya at Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha, Amboseli and Samburu National Parks.
“We are planning to establish one hotel in Zanzibar for starters next year, then build another property in one of the parks within the southern tourist circuit…the idea is to meet the industry’s demands, which in turn we’ll be expanding taxes horizon.”
Being the first firm to start its full operation in Tanzania, after the introduction of liberalization policy, Sopa Lodges serves nearly 30,000 tourists per year and the number is likely to go up in the near future.
In its operation, Sopa Lodges also works in network cooperation with Elewana Afrika, which operates Arusha Coffee Lodge, Tarangire Treetops, the Manor at Ngorongoro, Serengeti Migration Camp, Kilindi – Zanzibar, and AfroChic – Diani Beach.

Tourists visiting Tanzania will soon be able to book tours at the touch of a button, following the introduction of a web-based reservation portal.
The portal, set up by Arusha based Bionic ICT firm, will cut the time spend to secure a tour package from two days to just an hour.
Chief executive Jimmy Kihwele said the portal, dubbed mduka, will be launched later this year.
It features multiple sales channels that allow customers to search, book and pay for their packages.
This means that travel agents stand to lose an estimated $225 million they make for arranging tour packages.
Mustafa Akuunay, the executive secretary of Tanzania Association of Tour operators, said the one stop booking system is the way to go if the industry is to be competitive.
Tanzania earned $1.4 billion from tourism in the year ended October 2011, from $1.2 billion the previous year, helped by a rise in tourist arrivals, according to central bank statistics.
The bank projects a positive outlook for 2012.

kiligoland March 20th, 2012, 06:03 AM Tazara partnering with South Africa on special tourist trains
Tanzania and Zambia Railway (Tazara) is cooperating with the government of South Africa to bring in Tanzania tourists from South Africa by using special tourist trains. This cooperation will improve tourism and the government will get revenue and boost economic growth.
Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Tazara deputy managing director Damas Ndumbalo said the government through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism would benefit from this cooperation because it would get a substantial amount of revenue.
“We are partnering with South Africa to use special tourist trains from South Africa to bring tourists in the country. We are hopeful that this cooperation will boost the tourist industry in Tanzania, increase revenue to the government and stimulate economic growth and development,” he said.
Next month Tazara expects to import four locomotives from China to improve the quality of services provided by Tazara trains.
Ndumbalo urged Tanzanians to utilise Tazara transport because it was cheap and secure.
“I call upon businesspeople to utilise this facility for it is cheap,” he said.
Villages, which will benefit from this transport include Mlimba, Mbeya, Nakonde and Kitwe. They will transport minerals like copper, agro-products and fertilisers.
The passenger train will travel to Zambia-Kapirimposhi twice a week from Dar es Salaam

BTW i am more than happy for creativity of TATO creativity since that online tour booking portal will increase revenue to the Tanzania and cut the money others get for Tourists that come to our land no need of going to tour agents! And i tell Arusha will boom with that portal since it will force that $250 per booking to be injected in our economy!

Travel Picks: Top 10 sunrise destinations
Fri Mar 30, 2012 5:14pm GMT
Travel Picks: Top 10 sun rises around the world - NEW YORK, March 30 (Reuters) - Residents of the Northern Hemisphere are downright giddy this time of year with the official arrival of spring. In honour of longer days, sunshine and the tantalising prospect of summer on the horizon, Cheapflights.com has chosen its top 10 list of places around the world to see a magnificent sunrise. Reuters has not endorsed this list:
1. Haleakala National Park, Hawaii, USA
Boarding a bus in the wee hours of morning is a pain, particularly on vacation when the greatest indulgence is sleeping in. But the alarm-clock acknowledgement is worth it if the payoff is watching a sunrise from above the clouds, on the top of a volcano. Various van tours offer the trip through Haleakala National Park in Maui, picking visitors up at 3 a.m. and dropping them off to see the event from the summit. Should you want to (and we highly recommend it), you can bike the 28 miles down the mountain, back to sea level.
2. Svalbard, Norway
The sun doesn't set in Svalbard-at least not between mid-April and late August each year. It's obvious, then, why the sun rising holds an almost magical appeal for visitors. Situated north of the Arctic Circle, the northernmost inhabited spot on the planet features the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun stays continuously in the sky for 24 hours a day. Glaciers and mountains clutter Svalbard's horizon, painting a landscape that merely enhances the event.
3. Angkor Wat Siem Reap, Cambodia
Angkor Wat any time of day is powerful, but arriving early enough to watch the sunrise offers visitors an even greater spectacle. The preserved temple attracts travelers to Cambodia from around the world, providing them architectural insight into Khmer and Hindu mythology and history. We advise that visitors dedicate more than a day to exploring the sacred grounds (and that one of those days begins before dawn).
4. Fiji
Smack dab on the 180-degree longitude line, Fiji is one of the first spots in the world to see the sun rise every day. The South Pacific destination, a favorite among lovers of turquoise seas and white-sand beaches (and who isn't), offers unrivaled scenery and inspirational landscapes. Itinerary tip: Follow an intoxicating sunrise up with a morning exploration; the "soft coral capital of the world" offers some of the best scuba diving in the world.
5. Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is on practically every adventure traveler's to-do list. With the enormous undertaking comes a chance to see one of the most enchanting sunrises in the world. From Kili's summit-19,341 feet above sea level-dedicated souls can reflect on their ascent, a massive accomplishment, while soaking up an unparalleled sight to see.
6. Stonehenge, England
Equinox devotees will gather every year for the Vernal Equinox. A place of sun worship still, Stonehenge is a mysterious destination that holds deep spiritual value for many travelers. Some researchers suggest the formation was erected as early as 2200 BC, while others argue it was even earlier, in 3000 BC. No matter the date of creation, Stonehenge is a powerful landmark, and well worth the visit for a beautiful-and perhaps magical-sunrise.
7. Tres Cruces, Peru
A six-hour bus ride from Cuzco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, Tres Cruces is undeniably worth the long trek. The Incas held the mountain spot, situated on the Amazon basin, sacred. Nowadays, it's visitors looking to experience a mind-blowing sunrise who sanctify the destination. The view famously boasts celestial hues and Polaroid moments from above the clouds.
8. Tulum, Mexico
The coastal oasis of Tulum draws spiritual travelers and yoga-types year-round to soak up exquisite culture, history and scenery all in a single spot. The destination's think-green mentality and efforts toward sustainability set the tone for a raw form of vacationing, where visitors are up with the sun (and often in bed shortly after the sun goes down). No need to set an alarm in Tulum, where sun worshipers gather at the shoreline daily to watch the sunrise.
9. Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA
The most impressive sunrises in the continental United States occur every day across the Grand Canyon. Cool purples melt into shades bronze and orange against the awe-inspiring scenery, arguably America's greatest natural wonder. There isn't a best place to see the sunrise in the Grand Canyon, but Maricopa, Hopi, and Mather points, and along the South Rim are recommended highly by in-the-know travelers.
10. Mount Sinai, Egypt
First a history refresher: Jews, Christians and Muslims alike believe that Moses received the 10 Commandments at the biblical Mount Sinai, as mentioned in the Torah, Bible and Koran. Still an important religious destination, Mount Sinai today draws believers who scale the route by foot for religious purposes, and for the chance to see one of the most inspiring sunrises in the world. Geza Ulole July 26th, 2012, 03:09 PM Tanzania: Tourism On Rebound - Kagasheki
By Marc Nkwame, 26 July 2012
Comment
Kilimanjaro — THE Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Khamis Kagasheki, has assured that Tanzania's tourism industry was on a major rebound with nearly six international airlines scrambling to land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA).
"The world seems to have just discovered the country's northern zone as a potential and most attractive tourism destination," stated Ambassador Kagasheki during an occasion to receive Qatar Airways Flight QR 546, which marked the Middle-East airline's maiden landing at KIA, on Wednesday.
"Today, we are inaugurating Qatar's flights to Kilimanjaro but already other airlines such as Emirates and Turkish Airways have expressed interest in adding KIA to their various global destinations," said Ambassador Kagasheki.
Two weeks ago, Kenya's national carrier (Kenya Airways) made its first landing at KIA promising to be connecting Kilimanjaro with Nairobi with direct flights, six-times a week and to increase the frequency to daily starting September. Transport Minister, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe who officially handed keys for the airline's offices at the airport, to the Qatar management, said the airline's decision to include Kilimanjaro to its Tanzania's flights log was a welcome move which was also beneficial to both parties.
"Kilimanjaro terminal is gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Parks, the world's famous destinations visited by millions of foreign tourists from all over the world; therefore, the ability to identify their airlines with these legendary features also gave the companies more mileage.
The Board Chairman for Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO), Ambassador Hassan Kibelloh, was optimistic that the daily service connecting Kilimanjaro to Doha will further stimulate the growth and help the airport fulfill its mission of becoming the most preferred gateway to the Northern tourism circuit of Tanzania.
"We are very happy with the Qatar Airways move to fly to KIA a terminal which has a five-star status when it comes to environment conservation and right now our management is setting out to plant 300,000 trees in the neighbourhood every year.
"Travelers from Europe and America will have another option to reach Kilimanjaro", he said, adding that while the Doha hub provides many connection opportunities to big capitals and cities around the world, KIA on the other hand, connects the world to the East African tourism circuits.
KIA has meanwhile, embarked on major terminal renovations and expansion projects that will cost over 25 million Euros. The airport handles nearly 700,000 travelers per year, though with the introduction of more international flights the number may reach a one-million figure this year.

Dodoma — THE Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is in the final stages of establishing the Tanzania Wildlife Authority, the National Assembly was told.
Deputy Minister in the ministry, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu, said the ministry was putting final touches on the establishment of the authority, including earmarking its responsibilities.
He said a task-force on the establishment of the authority has visited the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and Ngorongoro Conservation Authority (NCA) to learn how they operate.
According to Nyalandu, the task-force was able to learn operation structures of the two authorities which would enable it advice on how the new authority should be set up and operate. Responsibilities and structure of the authority would be ready by September, this year.
He said drafting of a bill on establishment of the authority would start in October and expected to be completed by December this year. Mr Nyalandu was responding to a basic question by Mbogwe MP, Augustine Manyanda Massele (CCM) who had wanted to know as to when would the government move in the National Assembly a bill on the establishment of the authority.
He explained further that section 8 of the Wildlife Conservation Act of 2009 gives power to the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism to establish the wildlife authority. The envisaged law and eventually the establishment of the authority are expected to increase revenues from forests, national parks and game reserves countrywide.

Tanapa revises tourism tariff, renames park entry fee
The Guardian Reporter
The Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa) has revised tariffs across fifteen national parks and renamed the park entry fee to ‘conservation fee’. In a statement by the management, the new tariffs will be effective as of the 1st of July 2013.
The statement from the authority issued yesterday said the changes were done to cater for among other things, the general increase in price levels of most commodities and services that has continued to escalate causing the increasing operational costs operation.
The other reason was to improve tourism facilities and infrastructure such as roads, bridges and airstrips, to cater for the increased number of visitors and to also diversify tourism activities in order to provide what the statement referred to as, ‘outstanding visitor experience’.
The authority also aims at internal restructuring and to serve for motivation it will improve staff incentives and packages, a move well received given the increased cost of living.
The early notice is in accordance to codes and regulations which stipulate tour operators must have at least one year notice prior to enforcement. Current law has it that Tariffs may be revised every two years.
Prior to the current modification, Tanapa tariffs have been revised only three times, January 2000, July 2004 and July 2006. Some of the areas to be affected with the new fees include filming, which the authority described as ‘very low and out of date’.
Walking safaris’ fees have also been changed due to popularity of some of the parks, tour operator views and visitor willingness. The minimum age for a walking safari is 12 years of age.
The statement mentioned other fees affected as guiding, fly camping, sports fishing, boating, canoeing, night game drive, guiding, vehicle, air craft landing, public camping, special camping, bush lunch or dinner, student fees for organised trips from Local Institutions.

kiligoland August 21st, 2012, 02:56 AM Tourism promising good future with promotion in eight big economies
The number of tourist arrivals from eight big economies is expected to jet-up, thanks after tour operators from those countries have vowed to provide full support in marketing Tanzania as an exceptional tourist destination.
The economies are Belgium, Canada, China, France, India, Spain, US and Netherlands.
Gabriel Mwenguo, sales and operations officer of Karibu Travel and Tourism Fair, told The Guardian on Friday that the Karibu Travel and Tourism fair held on Magereza Grounds in Arusha (June 1-3) is part of the tourism promotion efforts.
They have introduced the initiative after observing that there are so many people in those countries who are not aware of tourism in Africa.
The Karibu Fair has seen some Tanzanian tour operators enter into contractual agreements with the travel agents from those countries to put more emphasis on the continent’s potential.
"…they visited different pavilions, talked with Tanzanian tour operators on training and methods to attract tourists from those countries...,” said the sales and operations officer referring to the discussions held at the fair.
“After the visit and tour and with better information on Tanzania, they promise to promote the tourists attractions into their packages to other tour operators or retail operators…,” he went on to describe the intended course of action.
Explaining on what he has learned from the places he visited, Peter Tendenguwo, Managing Director of Ceraplum Investment Tendearts in Zimbabwe had this to say:
“… Tanzania is endowed with exceptional blend of scenery of wildlife, so many tourist attractions, beaches and human culture that can be promoted ....”
“…I will inform Zimbabweans on what you offer in your tourism sector so that they can come to experience what you have…,” he promised.
Grace Kimburu, Fair manager, detailed the Karibu Travel and Tourism Fair background saying, it was organised by Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), in collaboration with the ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
“It was formed to support small scale tour operators in the country who cannot afford to travel overseas to participate in international tourism fairs,” he said.
“As organizers, the main goal of Karibu Fair was just to allow foreign travel agents to meet and network with members of the East African tourism industry, creating a single venue where the overseas tour agents can form a new partnership …,” she explained.

Geza Ulole August 21st, 2012, 09:22 AM Dar registers ‘three wonders’
By In2EastAfrica Reporter
Tanzania’s top three tourist attractions, the Ngorongoro Crater, the annual wildebeest migration of Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro have been entered into the new “Seven Natural Wonders of Africa” race but few people here know anything about it.
http://in2eastafrica.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Mount-Kilimanjaro.jpg
Mount Kilimanjaro
The Chairman of Tourism Confederation of Tanzania, Mr Gaudence Temu, said with the three natural features competing with the likes of “Sahara Desert,” encompassing over ten countries in Northern Africa, ‘Mount Kenya,’ of Kenya and the ‘Red Sea Reef’ (Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea), Tanzanians need to wake up and vote for their local entries.
Poor voting from the country caused Mt Kilimanjaro to fall in the other “New Seven Wonders of Nature,” campaigns that ran between 2009 and 2011, where the Table Mountain of South Africa became the only feature from the continent to make into the finals.
The “New Natural Wonders of Africa,” race involves 12 tourist attraction sites on the continent and Tanzania is the only country which has the most entries in the list, including Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park.
The competing features in the “New Natural Wonders of Africa” listing include, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, the Red-Sea Reef, the vast Sahara Desert, Zuma Rock of Nigeria, Okavango Delta of Botswana, the ‘Peak of Furnace’ in the Reunion Island, the ‘Aldabra Atoll’ of Seychelles, ‘Tsingy Debemaraha’ of Madagascar and the ‘Avenue of Baobabs’ also found in Madagascar.
“All Tanzanians and the world at large are sensitized to vote for these three attraction sites and we are currently organizing a special committee to ensure that we do not repeat the same mistake which caused Kilimanjaro to lose last year,” said Mr Temu, who is also the CEO of Swissport Tanzania.
Visitors-wise, the Ngorongoro Crater located in the Ngorongoro district of Arusha seems to be the most popular, attracting over 500,000 tourists every year. Serengeti comes second with 350,000 annual visitors while Mount Kilimanjaro attracts nearly 55,000 tourists per annum.
Overall Tanzania as a country attracts around 1.2 million tourists per year, with more than 80 per cent of these ending up in the Northern Circuit where the three features are located.
The Ngorongoro Crater is managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), while both the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro operate under the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).
The country’s tourism promotion is supposed to be done by the Tanzania Tourists Board, but for many years TANAPA and NCAA have been conducting their own marketing both abroad and domestically.

Geza Ulole October 16th, 2012, 03:18 AM Tourist arrivals in Tanzania to double by 2015
By MARC NKWAME
As Tanzania strives to double the number of tourists visiting the country by the year 2015, the United Nations maintains that Africa’s share of International Tourists Arrival is just 5.2 per cent.
http://dailynews.co.tz/images/resized/images/fredpierret_300_231.jpg
The Executive Director of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Mr Frederic Pierret
The Executive Director of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Mr Frederic Pierret, said that at the moment five million tourists cross borders daily around the world. The number of international tourists, he says, will reach 1.6 billion by the year 2020.
Mr Pierret was speaking at the on-going First Pan-African Conference on “Sustainable Tourism Management in African National Parks and Protected Areas,” which is taking place in the municipality of Arusha. The Executive Director stated that the UNWTO forecasts a growth of 50 per cent in Africa’s tourists arrivals over the next nine years, during which the continent stands to log 134 million travellers per year – a massive increase from the current 50 million visitors.
The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu, had earlier on revealed that Tanzania projections are to attract 1.6 million tourists by 2015 which should double the current figure of 800,000 visitors per year.Tanzania’s main selling point is the country’s abundant natural resources and wildlife since the country has 16 National Parks, the continent’s highest mountain and the world’s only wildlife packed Volcanic Cratre, the Ngorongoro Crater.
Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) figures reveal that more than 70 per cent of tourists visiting Tanzania go for game viewing drives in national parks and over 80 per cent of the total number of foreign leisure travellers prefer to sample the attractions found in the Northern Tourism Circuit.
The Northern Zone is home to Mount Kilimanjaro; Africa’s highest peak, Ngorongoro Crater, the legendary Serengeti migrations, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. The conference delegations will be touring Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park later this week, to see for themselves how Tanzania is conducting its nature and wildlife conservation in harmony with surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, Vice-President Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal has called for collective efforts in conserving and protecting local natural resources and wildlife.Opening the first “Pan-African Conference on Sustainable Tourism Management in National Parks and Protected Areas,” here yesterday, Dr Bilal pointed out that it was time for all parties to team up and jointly work to attain the goal.
“In the last three decades, especially during the 1980s, Tanzania experienced increased environmental destruction on both land and water resources with poaching for wildlife products becoming rampant until the government moved in to arrest the situation,” said the Vice-President.

Joined by fellow actors Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, musicians Santigold and Lupe Fiasco and others, Biel joined the all-star expedition to help raise money and awarenes of the global clean water crisis.
Singer-actor Timberlake opened up about the wedding itself to Britain's Hello! magazine -- and confirmed that he serenaded his bride with a brand-new, original song as she walked down the aisle in a custom, pink Giambattista Valli gown.
"I figured if there was something I was going to be able to offer, it would be to sing her down the aisle," the "Cry Me a River" crooner said. And he brought down the house!
"Grown men were weeping. Hopefully it's because I didn't sound bad," he said.

Sem said that the big picture, the Kirawira camp recognition by the global prestigious magazine readers, will also lift Tanzania’s tourism in the international limelight.

Siag Travel Agent of Egypt is in the process of organizing an annual Cairo-to-Dar expedition with effect from January next year. This was disclosed by its Chairman and founder, Mr. Rami Siag, after getting the treat of Ngorongro Crater and the Serengeti.
Mr. Siag was leading a Cairo-to-Cape Adventure Convoy consisting of 48 British, French and Egyptian tourists who arrived in Tanzania recently through Sirari boarder on an eight-day expedition that enabled them to visit the country’s unique attractions.
The expedition tagged “Egypt Gateway to Africa” began its adventure trip in the City of Beartiz in Southern France on October 4, 2012, and was scheduled to cut across 12 African countries to its final destination in Cape Town, South Africa.
While talking to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) and Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) officials and the media, Mr. Siag said that most of the people in the group were very excited at seeing the endangered rhino, a hutting pride of lions, herd of buffaloes and other wild animals, as it was their first time to see them in their real life and natural surroundings. “We only watch wildlife on television and DVDs”.
During tour of Tanzania, apart from visiting Serengeti National Park and Ngorngoro Crater, the convoy will also be sampling Pare and Usambara mountains, Dar es salaam City, Mikumi National Park , Iringa and Mbeya before crossing the Tunduma boarder into Zambia.
According to Mr Siag, the main aim of the tour is to open Africa to the world, with Egyptian Coastal City of Alexandria as a potential gate to the continent.

Arusha. Number of tourists visiting Africa has been predicted to more than double in the next 15 years, improving prospects for the industry, as there is an increase in number of both natural and cultural attractions, it was announced here yesterday.
Deputy minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Lazaro Nyalandu told reporters here that the continent was increasingly becoming an important destination for global visitors.
He was introducing to reporters the first Pan African Conference on Sustainable Tourism Management kicking off here tomorrow at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).
He said the deliberate efforts countries have been making have seen the sector becoming an important player in building the economy.
Mr Nyalandu said the five-day conference, organised by his ministry in collaboration with the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) -- a specialised agency of the United Nations -- aims to address the challenges facing the sector and conservation, its most important component.
It becomes the fourth largest meetings to be organised in Arusha this year after the 2012 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) last May and the recent African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) and African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF). A total of 412 official delegates from about 40 countries in Africa are expected, he said, adding that Tanzania will capitalise on the event and will send at least 242 of its officials to the meeting.
The foreign delegates will include 13 ministers in charge of tourism and conservation dockets from Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Uganda and the host, Tanzania.
"This conference is taking place at a time when tourism industry is making significant gains in Africa. The number of visitors will more than double in the next 15 years because of improved marketing and facilities," Mr Nyalandu pointed out.
According to WTO, the tourism industry in Africa is currently growing at a respectable average rate of 7.2 per cent. One out of every 20 jobs in Africa is in the tour and travel industry.
But developing tourism in the world's poorest continent requires a host of factors besides the lovely lodges.
These include improved safety and security, health and hygiene, infrastructure, education and training, according to industry analysts.
The other is increasing investment in the sector, for which the deputy minister said Tanzania has done well in the last 15 years, which now leads in earning the country foreign exchange.
Statistics show that the country attracts over 800,000 foreign tourists who bring in an estimated $1 billion. But with world-famed attractions such as the Serengeti, Mt Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater and other historical sites, the figure could soon be higher.
"We are taking no chances. Tanzania has put in place appropriate policies, good investment environment and full involvement of the private sector and non-governmental organisations to boost the industry," he said.
Available statistics indicate African continent received about 50 million tourists last year -- a mere fraction of the world total. But supporting and investing in tourism benefits have had a multiplier effects.

Geza Ulole December 3rd, 2012, 01:03 AM TANAPA to build hotels in National Parks
By In2EastAfrica Reporter
http://in2eastafrica.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TANAPA-map.jpg
The Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) is in the process of building tourist hotels in a number of the country’s National Parks.
TANAPA’s Director General, Mr Allan Kijazi, says that the custodian of the National Parks has started operating tourist property in the country’s 16 game parks, especially the most visited attractions.
“All hotels, lodges and campsites operating in our National Parks are privately owned and run,” explained Mr Kijazi, adding that TANAPA has very little, if any, control over the related business and especially what the investors charge visitors or the type of services being offered.
Foreign- owned properties in National Parks have also been described as the main stumbling blocks in the development of domestic tourism since their boarding packages have always been very expensive and usually targeting foreign visitors.
Property in the parks charge between 350 US dollars and 1,500 dollars per room, per night, which means local Tanzanians are automatically walled from accessing their services and as the result the related park visits are confined to only tourists from overseas countries.
“TANAPA intends to construct luxurious lodges in the country’s largest National Park; Ruaha, the second largest Serengeti, as well as in Mikumi Game Park in order to diversify tourism by extending the industry southwards,” said Mr Kijazi, adding that the fourth lodge will be built in Tarangire, famous for its giant elephants and tree-climbing pythons.
Recently, the parliamentary committee in charge of Land, Natural Resources and Environment, led by Legislator James Lembeli toured some of the National Parks, including Serengeti, where they wanted to know why all properties operating in the game parks were foreign-owned.
They also demanded to be told why both the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) did not bid to buy properties formerly operated under the state-owned, Tanzania Hotels Investment when they were put up for sale a decade ago.
Mr Kijazi explained that the Parastatal Sector Reform Commission which was supervising sales of properties, had made it clear that institutions like TANAPA and NCAA would not be permitted to place bids for the hotels because, “One parastatal could not be allowed to buy another parastatal.”

On November 16, 1928 the opening ball of the Arusha Hotel, was attended by His Royal Highness Prince of Wales Edward (abdicated King Edward VIII). He was also accompanied by his brother His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester.
It was semi-official trip for the royal visitors. What a feast in Arusha Township as all the Europeans around Arusha particularly the farmers were invited!
The hotel organized a bash which included Maasai traditional dance. A battalion of King’s African Rifles paraded for inspection. Football was played.
Arusha hotel had hardly accommodated the royal visitors. Therefore, other guests were compelled to pitch the tents of the grounds around the hotel.

“I am Prince of Wales”
After divorce between Baroness Karen Blixen and Baron Bror was pronounced in 1925, the estranged husband together with his friends Philip Percival and Jeff Manley established the hunting firm known as Tanganyika Guides Limited.
The 20th Prince Edward was accompanied by his brother His Royal Highness Henry, Duke of Gloucester, hunting guide Honourable Denys Finch Hatton, son of the 13th Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham, Captain Alan Lascelles and Piers Leigh, Prince’s aide-de-camp.
Prince Edward was interested to hunt a lion and Finch-Hatton had recommended to employees Bror Blixen for the lion as he was the lion specialist.
On the day slated for opening of Arusha Hotel on November 16, 1928, Swedish Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke and his wife Baroness Cockie (Jacqueline) had driven 184 kilomettres from their Endasagu Farm about 10 kilometres west of Babati to meet the royal British visitors in Arusha.
While camped on the grounds of the Arusha Hotel, in the evening as Blixen and Cockie were mixing cocktails, the tent flap opened and a person came into the tent and said, “I am the Prince of Wales and would like to make your acquaintance,” said Edward.
After drinking and dinner, Bror agreed to accompany the royal safari and he pledged to help the Prince of Wales in the lion hunt.
Hemingway at the Hotel
The famous American Writer Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899 – 1961) having been ardently inspired by Theodore Roosevelt’s stories about hunting safari in Africa, the Hemingways (Ernest and his second wife Pauline) and their friend Charles Thompson left Marseilles, France on 22nd November, 1933 for a three-month trip in East Africa.
The objective of the trip financed through a loan of $25,000 disbursed by Pauline’s uncle, Gustavus Pfeiffer (the same uncle who helped them buy their Key West home), was to spend three months on hunting expedition as well as gathering material for his impending writing.
As part of preparation for safari to Africa, a lady by the name Jane Mason had helpfully introduced Ernest to Major Richard Cooper, and Cooper communicated through Jane his advice of suitable guns Ernest should bring for hunting. He also contacted his friend Baron Bror von Blixen of Tanganyika Guides. Blixen, the estranged husband of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen). Karen is the author of famous Out Africa book. Baron Blixen was once a guide and a manager of Major Cooper’s farm, near Babati.
After his safari in Mombasa, Nairobi and Machakos in Kenya, on 20th December, 1933, the party proceeded to Tanganyika with the intention to hunt in the then Serengeti Game Reserve. On 21st December the party arrived in Arusha and stopped at the Arusha hotel to swim in the pool and dinner.
On his trip Hemingway’s guide was Philip Hope Percival, who also had guided Theodore Roosevelt on his 1909 safari.
However, while in Serengeti fell ill suffering an amoebic dysentery. Due to this ailment, he was flown to Nairobi via Arusha Airport. While recuperating in Nairobi, Hemingway met Baron Blixen, who later joined the expedition in Tanganyika. Philip Percival and Bror Blixen were for a time in a partnership.
Baron Blixen's hunting firm was Tanganyika Guides; Percival's, firm African Guides, was based in Kenya.
After hunting in Serengeti, they returned to M’utu-Umbu (Hemingway’s rendering for Mto wa Mbu), “where we could look down and see the plain, the heavy forest below the wall, and the long dried up edged shine of Lake Manyara rose-colored at one end with a half million tiny dots that were flamingoes”.
From Manyara, the party proceeded to south-east of Lake Manyara, which is the present Tarangire National Park, where they expected to kill Kudu. Hemingway regretted by not seeing one and he stated in his book Green Hills of Africa, “But we never saw a kudu bull out of that camp and we left two days later to go into Babati and then to go to Kondoa and strike across country toward Handeni and the coast.” Hemingway appreciated the new country as he found kudu and sable in the open area.
After passing Kibaya, Hemingway admired the country and wrote, “Then the plain was behind us and ahead there were big trees and we were entering a country the loveliest that I had seen in Africa.”
Here we can also infer that the Hemingway party also did hunting in the ecosystem of newly established Saadani National Park before taking a boat for a sail to Mombasa for their departure on 28th February, 1934.
Evidently, as a result of the trip three of his books, narrative story of his expedition, Green Hills of Africa, and the two short fictions, the Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber and the Snows of Kilimanjaro Hemingway, 1954 Nobel Laureate in literature died on 2nd July, 1961 in Idaho, USA.

The skyline of the new central business district in the city will soon change with the development of an international hotel at the junction of Ghana Avenue and Mrambo Street.
Construction of a US$32m project is expected to commence in mid-2013 and the hotel operational by August 2015. The hotel will be operated and managed by a renowned international chain and negotiations have reached an advanced stage. zSpeaking to press yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Mr. Said Ally Said, the General Manager of Prime Assets (Tanzania) Limited, which is the developer of this project, said the hotel will feature 150 spacious golf-course and sea-facing rooms with modern conveniences.
Other facilities will include top quality food and beverage outlets, a large conference room with video conferencing facilities, boardrooms and a fully equipped gym and pool. He added that guests and meeting delegates will have free high-speed internet access throughout the building including the use of a dedicated 24-hour business centre.
He said the energy efficient building will be in full compliance with brand standards, environmental, city and other planning regulations.
Mr. Said Ally said that besides contributing to the national tax coffers, the project would provide training and employment opportunities to young Tanzanians aspiring to pursue internationally recognized hospitality related careers.
According to the property manager, the project will alleviate the current shortage of hotel rooms necessary to attract Dar es Salaam as a destination for international conferences and exhibitions in the region particularly, as the regional economies continue to expand at the rate of six percent (6%) and air traffic expected to grow by eight percent (8%) annually.
“Hotels are catalytic to the development of business and tourism infrastructure and wherever we go, we continue to receive tremendous support. This boosts our confidence as it signals the Government’s earnest commitment to attract large scale investments, for which we are very grateful”, commented Mr. Ally

Kila room ina choo, bafu, nk. Wakijitahidi sana watajenga kama holiday inn. Ki 3 star kidogo.

It is possible to construct a 5 hotel for that amount. Kumbuka star ratings hazitegemei ukubwa wa jengo husika.
Na uzuri zaidi teknolojia mpya za ujenzi na materials kama prefabs vimepunguza sana gharama za ujenzi wa majengo.

Noted, you have put it quite right. 5 star ni facilities. To make that amount work the hotel will have to be small. The big cost is not actually on the structure ndio maana office buildings are much cheaper to build upto a quarter of the price of a hotel of the same building size. Alafu 5 star prefab.....
Geza Ulole December 19th, 2012, 09:25 PM well lets wait and see a 5 stars hotel of 150 rooms at that amount i.e. US$ 32 mio.! It is nearly impossible to me to maintain the standards needed unless the furnishing has it's own price!
bantugbro December 20th, 2012, 02:38 PM The details about this hotel deal are very sketchy making it difficult to ascertain what sort of design they will resort to. We must also not forget to factor in a possible journalistic misquote of the story particularly in the finance part.

TTB inks pact with US tour operators to boost tourism
Beatrice Philemon
Tanzania has launched its first year membership with the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) in a move to attract more American tourists and enable US tour operators to create new itineraries in the North America’s southern and western circuits.
The membership deal was inked on December 8, this year at USTOA’s Annual Conference and Marketplace in Hawaii.
The new programme was designed by TTB and USTOA to increase the number of American tourists in Tanzania, presented as the land of beautiful travelogue and the largest country in eastern Africa.
TTB and the tour operators are already offering tour packages for Tanzania in the US.
While in the US, Tanzania Tourist Board’s (TTB) managing director Dr Aloyce Nzuki, discussed various issues related to Tanzania’s tourism potential with US tour operators as well as the top 10 misconceptions about the former country for 60 minutes at ‘The Around the World’.
Dr Nzuki said there is no doubt that joining USTOA and participating in the conference and marketplace, provided TTB and the private sector an excellent opportunity to build new partnerships, and strengthen the relationship with the tour operators already selling Tour Safaris to Tanzania.
“We are confident that these activities will not only generate more American tourists to the country, but will help us diversify our tourism product by encouraging and facilitating tour operators to create new itineraries to the southern and western circuits," he said.
John Hanratty, USTOA Chairman and Travel Impression’s executive vice president and chief operating officer commended Tanzania on launching its first USTOA membership.
‘This is an effective way for Tanzania to deliver a strong message that it recognizes the key role that tour operators can play in bringing more tourists from the US to their destination,” he added.
“I believe through this strategy Tanzania will receive more tourists from the US and other countries as well as increase foreign currency to Tanzania,” he said.
USTOA President Terry Dale noted that Dr Nzuki’s presentation was informative, creative and passionate and that it focused on the top ten misconceptions about ‘Destination Tanzania’ as well as revealing many of its hidden gems.
He observed that this was well received by the more than 100 active tour operators attending the event.
Tanzania focuses on wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism, with approximately 28 percent of the land protected by the government, the largest percentage of any country in the world.
It boasts 15 national parks and 31 game reserves, 50 game parks, one special conservation Area (Ngorongoro), and 3 marine parks.
It is home to the tallest mountain in Africa, the legendary Mt Kilimanjaro, The Serengeti, home to the "Great Animal Migration" that was named the New 7th Wonder of the World by USA Today and ABC TV's Good Morning America, the world acclaimed Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the "Eden of Africa" and the “8th Wonder of the World”, Olduvai Gorge--the cradle of mankind, the Selous, the world’s second largest game reserve.
Apart from that Ruaha National Park, is now the second largest National Park in Africa, the Spice Islands of Zanzibar and seven Unesco World Heritage Sites.
Most important for visitors, the Tanzanian people, with a rich history and diverse blend of cultures, are warm and friendly.
On December 9, 2012, Tanzania, an oasis of peace and stability with a democratically elected and stable government, celebrated its 51st anniversary of independence.

Nature Reserve plans to revamp tourist facilities
Lusekelo Philemon
Plans are under way to renovate tourist facilities in Amani Nature Reserve in East Usambara mountains, which is popular for hosting eco-tourism in the Africa’s tropical forests.
The idea aims to boost the number of tourists visiting the reserve, which is very rich in biodiversity as well as a potential in medical research.
The nature reserve is shared between Muheza and Korogwe districts in Tanga region and is well known for bird watching, nature watching, walking and hiking.
“We’re currently working on the challenges facing the nature reserve…our task is to ensure that trails are improved to make tourists and researchers reach their desired sites in the reserve,” ANR officer in charge of tourism Godfrey Msumari told journalists who visited the nature reserve recently.
The reserve is currently generating an average of 19m/- per annum as collections from tourists visiting the nature reserve covering about 8,380 hectares.
“Currently, we are receiving an average of 650 tourists per year. To us this is a very good start as previously the situation was very bad,” he said, adding that the move had been possible through support from different stakeholders, including the Eastern Arc Mountains Conservation Endowment Fund (EAMCEF), which has been supporting the reserve since 2009.
“Through EAMCEF support we have managed to clear nine tourist trails, which is about 23kms. The idea is meant to ease access of tourists to reach desired destinations within the nature reserve,” Msumari stressed.
The ANR authority is determined to ensure that it increases the number of tourists who wish to see the thrilling wonders of flora and fauna.
The nature reserve is home to more than 300 bird species, which cannot be seen elsewhere in the world.
“There are also endangered species of dragon flies which are only found in the East Usambara Mountains …” he said.
ANR conservator Mwanaidi Kijazi said the current housing facilities were dilapidated and so needed to be renovated.
“We have already submitted a bill of quantities to Tanzania Forestry Services (TFS), whose cost amounts to 180m/- and their response has been good. It’s our hope that the amount will be released soon so rehabilitation can start,” Kijazi said.
Among facilities to be renovated are a building formerly used as the German stationmaster’s house, an information centre building as well as some buildings at the ANR headquarters.
ANR has already submitted the request to TFS, which is responsible for the development of the forest policy, laws and regulations governing the Forestry and Beekeeping Division (FBD).
Kijazi is optimistic that by improving infrastructure in the nature reserve the number of tourists will double from the current average of 650 tourists per annum.
According to the conservator, the road heading into the reserve also needs to be uplifted for the nature reserve to be easily accessible all the year round.
The nature reserve is one of the latest to be established by the government. It was established in 1997 to protect the flora and fauna in East Usambara and is the second largest botanical garden in the world after Padua, in Italy.
The reserve is also home to the African violet flower and more than 340 bird species.

Rain Drops February 6th, 2013, 04:12 PM scrap of raffia roof is propped up by spindly sticks to offer shade from the blazing sun, and a coconut wood plank is plonked on a couple of stones. This is how airports should be.
As we wait in Pangani for the Cessna to swoop down on the landing strip carved in the midst of vast fields of sisal, my wife and I sit on the rickety bench happily contemplating the gorgeous Tanzanian coastal scenery and chatting to our driver.
He bombards us with questions. First about football, of course. Then are the streets in London all paved? he asks. And do many black people live there?
All aboard: Tanzania's Mafia Island, where life is more relaxed than the name might suggest
It is a salutary reminder of the vast distance we have to cover on our way home — not just in geographical terms. The chat encapsulates the charm of this unsullied corner of East Africa.
Most tourists heading to Tanzania go to either the safari parks or the spice island of Zanzibar. We want to get off those beaten tracks, so opt first for sinister-sounding Mafia Island, a slash of greenery 13 miles or so off the mainland.
The name comes from the ancient Arab word for archipelago. But the only godfathers on this sleepy little island, with its peachy beaches fringed by mangroves, are likely to be friendly fishermen and boat-builders.
We stay at a laid-back eco-lodge called Pole Pole, a clutch of palm-thatched huts on stilts in a coconut grove. The name means Slowly, Slowly in Swahili — and the resort lives up to its name.
There is delightfully little to do, apart from doze away the days watching the odd dhow drift slowly by and the beach disappear as the tide comes in.
Catch of the day: A local fisherman shows off his angling skills
Wandering down the beach, I find a gang of men loading big plastic drums onto heavily-laden wooden boats. They are collecting water, they tell me, coming over every day from a neighbouring island that is home to 800 people, but has no natural water.
The biggest burst of activity is at sundown when squadrons of fruit bats fly over from a neighbouring island in search of papaya for dinner.
There is something almost comical in their haphazard flight patterns. It makes the perfect backdrop for a pre-dinner cocktail. The real action, however, is found beneath the waves. The waters around the southern half of Mafia Island are a protected park, home to an incredibly-rich array of marine life.
The diving is superb and well-organised. There is the usual pleasure of dropping down into a dazzling underwater world, with 48 species of coral and 460 species of fish swarming the reefs.
It is good to be greeted by some huge grouper, despite their mournful expressions. These fish struggle to grow large close to shores since they are both friendly and tasty, which proves a fatal combination. Many other fish are of similar hefty proportions.
Idyll: A beach on the Pangani coast, off the beaten track
And what makes it even more memorable is setting out in an elegant wooden dhow. Between dips into the deep blue, we dine on grilled tuna and chapattis followed by chopped coconut, while fish eagles soar above us.
Later, we sail back slowly as the sun sets over the island, an image of tropical perfection. On our final morning, we climb onto a 4x4 and bounce along sandy tracks through cashew and baobab trees to the other side of the island.
We are heading off in search of the world’s biggest fish. Back on the water, our party scan the seascape for dorsal fins slicing through the waves. Spotting one, six of us plunge overboard with whoops of delight.
When the first whale shark loom through the plankton-rich water beside me, it is pure magic. First, the huge gaping mouth, then the giant speckled body stretching some 30 ft, then with a contemptuous flick of a powerful tail it disappears back into the gloom.
Furry friend: A blue monkey looks as if it is ready to pounce on Mafia Island
Afterwards several more close encounters of this kind, we head still in our swimming costumes
to the small airport, where our bags have been delivered, and wait to be whisked off the seductive
little island.
Somehow the epic stretch of sand along the Pangani coast on the mainland, close to the Kenyan
border and five hours drive north of the capital Dar es Salaam, feels even more serene.
Once again it is a small adventure to get there, far from the crowds and on a series of short plane hops, but The Tides, a small hotel run by a Scottish couple on Pangani beach, turn out to be simple, stylish and wonderfully relaxing.
In the evening we walk to the beach, past villagers gouging out a boat from a mango tree, to watch dozens of baby green turtles clamber from their sandy nest and scurry down to the sea.

As the tourists head back to safari in Zimbabwe, is it on the Rhodes to recovery?
My father and other animals: Taking dad to Kenya (but don't expect wild enthusiasm)
In a rare burst of activity, we head into Pangani town. Once this was a major trading port for ivory and slaves, although since then it has slipped into obscurity. There are forests above it on one side, while
crumbling colonial-era buildings line the banks on the other.
In pride of place is a two-storey residence built for a wealthy Arab trader 200 years ago with, according to local legend, several slaves buried alive in the foundations.
We drink a Coke in the market, sitting on green plastic chairs and watch the occasional shopper disturb the traders’ lively conversations, then head back on the ferry over the river with a gaggle of schoolchildren.
Then sadly all too soon, it is time to head to that hectic airport in the sisal fields to catch our flights back to reality.

Rain Drops February 12th, 2013, 05:47 PM Arusha — SERENGETI National Park was declared the best of the seven New Natural Wonders of Africa as all the three entries from Tanzania made it to the coveted seven.
Announcing the new 'Seven Wonders' of nature here, the President and Founder of the Texas (US)-based 'New Seven Wonders,' Dr Philip Imler, revealed that though the seven wonders are not ranked in positions, Serengeti stood out due to its legendary, spellbinding largest migration of large mammals.
Ngorongoro Crater, found within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, and described as 'The Bowl' in which a variety of wildlife live,' was also voted among the Seven Wonders of Nature while Mount Kilimanjaro, which is Africa's highest mountain, became the third entry from the country.
Other winners were the 'Red Sea Reef,' on the coast of Egypt and Sudan; River Nile, which flows into more than 10 countries in Africa, the Sahara Desert encompassing nearly ten countries as well and the Okavango Delta of Botswana.
A total of 12 entries from around the continent had been competing for the coveted 'Seven' positions and Tanzania had fielded its own top three tourist attractions. "I was a bit skeptic upon learning that, the 'New Seven Wonders' of nature will have three winners from a single country but official statistics and experts' opinions did not lie," said Dr Imler.
He added that even the votes from Tanzanians did not help to sway final experts' conclusions. He also named the Seven Wild Life Wonders of Africa as the leopard, crocodile, elephant, hippopotamus, rhino, mountain gorilla and the lion.
The colourful proclamation ceremony was graced by the Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Pinda, who was the chief guest at the awards giving session, held at the New Mount Meru Hotel. "As Tanzanians, we must protect not only the three winners but all natural resources and wildlife that our country has been endowed with," said the prime minister.
The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador, Mr Khamis Kagasheki, said Tanzania is proud to have three of its natural wonders among Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Among those who attended the function include the Minister of State (Tourism) of Uganda, ambassadors, MPs and representatives of tourist boards from Zambia and Uganda.
The Director-General of Tanzania National Parks, Mr Allan Kijazi, was proud to have two destinations under his authority making it to the top seven and pointed out that Tanzania was always regarded as 'Number One Natural Summit of Africa.'
Also vying for the title were Mount Kenya, Zuma Rock of Nigeria, the 'Peak of Furnace' in the Reunion Island, the 'Aldabra Atoll' of Seychelles, 'Tsingy Debemaraha,' of Madagascar and the 'Avenue of Baobabs' also found in Madagascar. Visitors wise, the Ngorongoro Crater, located in Ngorongoro District of Arusha, seems to be the most popular, attracting over 500,000 tourists every year.
Serengeti comes second with 350,000 annual visitors while Mount Kilimanjaro attracts nearly 55,000 tourists per annum. Overall, Tanzania as a country attracts around 1.2 million tourists per year with more than 80 per cent of these ending up in the Northern Circuit where the three features are located.
The Ngorongoro Crater is managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) while both the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro operate under the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA

Rain Drops February 12th, 2013, 05:48 PM :banana:Arusha. Tanzania’s tourism sector received another boost yesterday when the country won three of the seven natural wonders of Africa.
The Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) and Mt Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest mountain - were declared among the seven winners by organisers of the event.
There were cheers and ululation at a packed meeting hall of Mt Meru Hotel when the president of the Natural Wonders of Africa, Dr Phillip Imter, made the announcement shortly before 6pm.
Hundreds of dignitaries, including Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda, ministers and stakeholders in the tourism industry, cheered as the three leading tourist sites in the country emerged among the seven natural wonders in Africa this year.
However, it was the Serengeti, the oldest and one of the leading destinations for foreign tourists, which received most of the votes not only among the three Tanzanian winners, but also all the seven natural sites that were prized.
“Serengeti was the most voted of all the natural wonders. It also received most of the number one votes among many sites which have entered the race,” Dr Imler explained.
The 14,000-square kilometre park is famous for its wildlife splendour, especially the annual migration of nearly two million wildebeest, zebras and other grazing animals between the protected area and Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. In 2006, it was declared one of the world’s natural wonders.
Even before the announcement, information had been circulating in Arusha that Tanzania had won at least two of the prizes, given the big push for the event by the Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA).
Dr Imter, while announcing the results of voting for the best natural sites in Africa carried late last year said the results were an indication of Tanzania’s commitment to conserve natural resources, including wildlife.
Other natural wonders in Africa declared winners of the race by the organisers were the Red Sea Reef, River Nile, credited as being the longest river in the world, Sahara Desert, also the largest in the world and the Okavango delta in Botswana.
The 5,895-metre high, Mt Kilimanjaro, was described as the pinnacle of Africa. It was not only the highest free-standing mountain in the world, but also rich in biodiversity, while NCA was voted for being a unique site for coexistence of people and wildlife.
Representatives from Tanapa and NCA received the prize on behalf of their protected sites while a Ugandan minister received the prize for River Nile.

Rain Drops April 11th, 2013, 04:50 PM Beijing — TANZANIA has encouraged Chinese businesspeople to invest in the country, as there are many opportunities in the tourism industry which have not been well explored.
This was said by the Director of Tourism in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr Ibrahim Mussa, to officials from Chaoyang District Commission of Tourism in Beijing.
Mr Mussa, who leads a Tanzanian delegation on a special mission to promote the country's destinations in China, said Tanzania is looking forward to have positive cooperation with Chinese investors in areas of accommodation facilities to cater for a huge number of tourist arrivals in the country.
He also mentioned that Chinese expertise was highly encouraged in areas of training tourism personnel to meet the demands of tourists visiting the country. During the meeting, the Director General of Tanzania National Parks, Mr Allan Kijazi informed the CBD officials that TANAPA had already prepared an Investment Prospectus, which provides areas and opportunities of investments in the parks.
He further said that currently, there are 25 sites in the parks which include four in the Serengeti National Park; three in Tarangire National Park; six in Katavi National Park and four in Saadani National Park - have been allocated for private sectors and encouraged the Chinese investors to grasp that opportunity.
He said that currently, TANAPA has about 30 investors in the parks but mainly from United States and other European countries and that none of them is from China. Mr Kijazi mentioned that China has a fast growing economy and that is seen as a potential source market for Tanzanian tourism.
He urged officials from Chaoyang District to help market the Tanzania through adequate publicity in the Chaoyang media houses. The Managing Director of Tanzania Tourist Board, Dr Aloyce Nzuki, encouraged the Chinese State-owned tour operators to open up their branches in the country as a means to increase the number of tourists.
He mentioned the areas of cruise boating in Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria as well as railway tourism in the Saadani- Mkomazi circuit as good potential areas of investment which is open to Chinese investors. He also urged the Chaoyang tourism officials to place the presence of Tanzania tourist attractions in the population of Beijing.
The two parties agreed to work on the proposed areas of cooperation and prepare a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will be signed in the near future as a way to maintain the goodwill relationship existing between China and Tanzania, since the old days of the former first presidents Julius Nyerere and Mao Zedong.
China has promised to promote destination Tanzania in China as a way to increase the number of Chinese tourist arrivals in the country. This was said yesterday by the Vice-Director of Chaoyang District Commission of Tourism Development of Beijing Municipality, Mr Zhang Aijun to the Team Tanzania visiting China on a mission to promote tourism in the country.
Mr Zhang reiterates that Chaoyang district is a potential area as it encompasses the 20 per cent of all Beijing people who travel outside the country as tourists.

Rain Drops May 1st, 2013, 06:50 PM DODOMA, Tanzania, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The number of tourists visiting Tanzania went up by 24 percent from 867,994 in 2011 to 1, 077,058 in 2012, according to Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Khamis Kagasheki.
The increase was a result of increased number of accommodation facilities as well as better infrastructure to get the tourists to their destinations, Tanzanian officials say.
By March, up to 750,797 tourists visited the East African country's national parks, bringing in more than 65.7 million U. S. dollars.
"This success story is a result of a number of things including improving road infrastructures in the parks, whereby the Tanzania National Parks (Tanapa) managed to rehabilitate about 6,526.5 km in different parks across the country," an official told Xinhua.
Tanzania has a total of 15 national parks including Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, Ruaha, Katavi, Mikumi, Rubondo, Saadani, Gombe and Mahale , Kitulo, Mkomazi and Udzungwa.
Tanapa managed to increase a runway for the Seronera Airstrip from 1.5 km to 2.2 km. "This involved expansion of the airstrip to allow bigger planes like Fokker to land in the airport," an official Ambassador Kagasheki said.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) had received 507,984 international tourists until March, earning nearly 30 million dollars.
The NCAA had managed to rehabilitate 350 km of roads linking the area during the period and purchased vehicles to improve patrols in the world heritage site.
He commended efforts by the Tanzanian government for investing more in the hotel and hospitality industry to cope with the increasing tourist arrivals in the country.
"The government we couldn't manage to reach that number," the senior official said, pushing for more world-class hospitality facilities and services.
"As government, our role is to market Tanzania outside the world, and the private sector is to invest more in building world- class hotels to meet the country's demand of beds," he said, adding: "This would attract more tourists to come into the country which has a wide range of tourist products compared to any other in the east African country."
Tanzania needs to double the number of tourist by increasing the number of standard beds to at least 6,000 from an approximately 4,000, while improving food and beverage outlets as well as transport services.
Minister Kagasheki also revealed that the government is carrying out a countrywide exercise of ranking hotels. Out of the 17 accommodation facilities in Manyara region involved, the hotels Lake Manyara Tree Lodge and Kikoti Safari Camp were ranked Four Stars, 11 Three Stars and four others Two Stars.
