One Atlantic Center

250m/820ft
50 floors
completed in 1987
designed by Heery International and Johnson/Burgee Architects.

also known as IBM Tower

This elegant 50-story skyscraper in Upper Midtown Atlanta is clad in pink granite. According to the AIA Guide to the Architecture of Atlanta, the copper pyramidal top was inspired by H. H. Richardson's Trinity Church in Boston while the proportions were influenced by Hood and Howell's Chicago Tribune Tower. Other historicist details include the modified Gothic elements at the roof (the finial at the junction of shaft and roof and the gilded crockets on the pyramidal top) and elaborate base with arched windows, "Gothic" balustrade, and corbels.

a good reworking of a classic design in2 a modern skyscraper, I love how many buildings in Atlanta are topped with a spire, its like another New York! I like the way the building next to it continues the trend to.

I'm not big on spires, but, this building I like alot. It is my favorite building in Atlanta...it is one building that stands to gain character with age, IMO...nice shots. Thanks for posting them.

I agree. I have always felt this was the best skyscraper in Atlanta. It defines what a skyscraper should be in every way. Most importantly it is inspireing in so much that it began the rebirth of Midtown. Having abuilding of such significance went along way to making Midtown a premire address.

It is IMO one of the best in the world.

The fact Phillip Johnson and John Burgee gave Atlanta two stunning buildings (191 Peachtree) of this character is really a gift.

The shorter building to the west was not designed by Johnson and Burgee and allthough it is a nice enough building it will not age as nicely given it is not clad in granite, but concrete.
