View Full Version : TOURNAMENT: 70's cup Jan July 12th, 2011, 04:13 PM This thread is to discuss the 70's Cup Tournament, in which the tallest buildings completed during the 1970's will compete against each other. [{x}] July 12th, 2011, 07:10 PM I think World Trade Center is going to win! A lot of cool buildings were built in the 70s...my favorite is the Aon center, looks so futuristic for a box built more than 30 years ago, hope it makes it far :) At least there won't be any nationalism in this competition  lkiller123 July 12th, 2011, 09:43 PM Jan, do you need pictures for the competition? I can get some from Flickr, the ones that are Creative Commons Licensed. :) Jan July 13th, 2011, 01:35 AM ^ Thanks for the offer. :) If you want to you can run through the images I have found for this contest by using this url: http://xl.skyscrapercity.com/images/oneonone/yyyymmddxx.jpg ...where yyyy = year, mm = months, dd = day and xx is either 01 or 02. So the first image on the first matchup would be. http://xl.skyscrapercity.com/images/oneonone/2011071801.jpg Which produces this image: http://xl.skyscrapercity.com/images/oneonone/2011071801.jpg If you think you can find us better ones, please let me know. Mind the image size must be 330 x 330 px. Cheers! :) Yellow Fever July 13th, 2011, 04:46 AM one of my favorites. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3025/2897127826_46b67cf864_z.jpg?zz=1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/branditressler/2897127826/) Transamerica Pyramid (http://www.flickr.com/photos/branditressler/2897127826/) by ladybugbkt (http://www.flickr.com/people/branditressler/), on Flickr Transamerica Pyramid The Transamerica Pyramid is the tallest and most recognizable skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline. It has a structural height of 260 meters (853 ft) and contains 48 floors of retail and office space. Construction began in 1969 and finished in 1972. It is currently ranked as the 100th tallest building in the world. SO143 July 13th, 2011, 06:47 AM I'd defo vote for WTC and my 2nd favourite one in the entire tournament is ^^ Transamerica Pyramid in SF http://www.bobbyshred.com/images/wtcnight2.jpg Yellow Fever July 13th, 2011, 08:24 AM ^^WTC is my fav as well. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2630/3707947147_3a6518078c_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/freelancer018/3707947147/) IDS Center (http://www.flickr.com/photos/freelancer018/3707947147/) by Black Box Images (http://www.flickr.com/people/freelancer018/), on Flickr IDS Center The 792-foot (241-meter) tall IDS Center was designed by Phillip Johnson and was opened in 1972. The design of the IDS Center allows each floor 32 corner offices instead of the typical four and column-free interiors allowing tenants the maximum flexibility for their office space. Because of this success, the Phillip Johnson and the other IDS Center architects received an Honor Award for Design from the American Institute of Architects in 1975. WTC is nothing special imo. Sears tower is ugly as hell. Yellow Fever July 17th, 2011, 08:27 AM I like this one as well.. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1049/605212930_09cf84ed87_z.jpg?zz=1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35547288@N00/605212930/) IMG_5358 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35547288@N00/605212930/) by camtb (http://www.flickr.com/people/35547288@N00/), on Flickr The Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta, It was built in 1976, its 220 meters (723 feet) tall, and rises 73 stories from ground level. It was built in 1976. dineshdb2 July 17th, 2011, 10:59 AM Please correct the spelling of 'prelimenary' in 'prelimenary rounds'! I'm sorry if this is off-topic. DZH22 July 17th, 2011, 05:19 PM #12 - Hancock Place Boston's tallest building since 1976, the John Hancock Tower is a 60 story glass monolith built in the shape of a parallelogram. From certain angles it appears to be 2 dimensional, and is *arguably* the world's greatest example of minimalism. http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp322/DZH22/Oct%202010/IMG_6999.jpg http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp322/DZH22/Oct%202010/IMG_6952.jpg http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp322/DZH22/Oct%202010/IMG_7004.jpg Edit: These are all my pictures, not from flickr Wapper July 17th, 2011, 05:33 PM Cool, it does look 2D :) Thanks for the pictures. 1+2=3 July 17th, 2011, 11:53 PM I like this one as well.. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1049/605212930_09cf84ed87_z.jpg?zz=1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35547288@N00/605212930/) IMG_5358 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35547288@N00/605212930/) by camtb (http://www.flickr.com/people/35547288@N00/), on Flickr The Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta, It was built in 1976, its 220 meters (723 feet) tall, and rises 73 stories from ground level. Recently been on this one. Quite a nice view. :) Jan July 18th, 2011, 02:53 PM Please correct the spelling of 'prelimenary' in 'prelimenary rounds'! Got it, thanks for pointing out. EuropeanChancellor July 18th, 2011, 04:24 PM Whatīs the point of this? Next time there will be World cup of supertalls with 12158 windows  Wapper July 18th, 2011, 11:15 PM :sad2: Don't spoil the fun! KillerZavatar July 19th, 2011, 04:35 PM i still dont know if i will vote for sears tower or for the WTC. damn _Mort_ July 21st, 2011, 01:42 PM WTC is already winner. patrykus July 21st, 2011, 03:10 PM Agree, not a single complex in the world has ever gave its city such a characteristic and awesome skyline. Just for that they deserves to win. Btw, The bay view Manhattan is getting with the new towers is not even as half as nice as it has formerly been with twins. DZH22 July 21st, 2011, 10:38 PM I'm surprised how much the Hancock is beating Citigroup. It's a great building though. Should be a good fight with FCP, but I think my beautiful John Hancock Tower might be final 4 material! (before bowing to Willis, which will then bow out to the WTC) zhuxx289 July 22nd, 2011, 06:12 AM i was so pleased to see this- four of my all time favorite skyscrapers- hancock, transamerica, citigroup and IDS were all in the running! TheDismantler July 24th, 2011, 10:15 AM Some good entries, but seriously, the WTC is gonna mop the floor here with it's wicked-looking, massive, dual 110-story, 400m+ overlording towers. 1+2=3 July 24th, 2011, 03:57 PM It is sad I think how the beautiful U.S. Steel tower is not doing that well against that ugly AON building. More people should see it in real life. It is really an impressive looking thing. Furthermore in my opinion John Hancock Centre should absolutely take the title. My top 3: 1. John Hancock 2. Wold Trade Centre 3. U.S. Steel building Hendycfc July 24th, 2011, 11:56 PM At day time.. The willis tower looks the nicest... At night time the WTC looks the nicest with all it's lights on inside... Adding to the WTC the pure size of it is scary... It is so tall and wide. WTC to win it obvo. DZH22 August 1st, 2011, 06:57 PM Why is Aon (LA) getting crushed by the WTC if it already just lost to the US Steel Tower? 1+2=3 August 1st, 2011, 09:51 PM ^^ Stupid indeed. US Steel should crush WTC (although I know that is never gonna happen). BTW: seems John Hancock is not in this competition. My mistake (finished just before 1970?) Jesus10 August 11th, 2011, 11:24 PM HOPE WTC WINS luci203 August 14th, 2011, 03:20 PM My favorite... http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/CharmedOne9805/old/JA002294.jpg Pergolas December 1st, 2011, 12:22 AM Itīs amazing how we could do this incredible skyscrapers in 40 years ago isaidso December 3rd, 2011, 11:31 AM If this were a 1960s cup, I'd vote for the Toronto-Dominion Centre in Toronto. 1970s, my vote goes to another Toronto building. Royal Bank Plaza is timeless, sophisticated, and elegant. If it were 100 metres taller, I think it would get far more recognition around the world.
